In this short video I introduce what the eMMc is and how it compares to other storage devices like SSD. I then go over how to change or upgrade a eMMC.
Most eMMC come with either 32GB or 64GB storage. These are the most common sizes of eMMC storage, but you can also find 128GB storage, however I did not find any on eBay or any other stores when I looked.

Note to those wishing to upgrade their eMMC on their laptops:
The eMMc a chip that is soldered on; it cannot be easily removed and does not have a socket, as is found with the CPU. If you have a lot of experience with BGA (Ball Grid Array) soldering you might be able to find a chip online on Aliexpress for the higher capacity model of your laptop. I would also recommend the Reballing stencil that matches your particular eMMC. When I contacted Acer and Asus support for this, they had no way to address this. They were unsure of which specific eMMC model would work as an upgrade.

Question, I have hp, HQ-TRE, 71025 I guess it's from Boeblingen, Germany. It's currently running Windows 10 pro with 28gb of storage how do I upgrade the storage to a SSD, if possible? Your video explains a lot of why I'm having problems with this laptop/notebook. Now I know the reason why 8 cannot upgrade my windows. Thanks in advance for the response.

@@kenzie4786 With Windows 10 on 64 GB EMMC. I would have about 36 GB left. This is an old video. We now use much larger SSD. Today I would use the 512 GB as the smallest space, but would recommend at least 1 TB.

Great video, expressed and verified what I understood about eMMC. I'm attempting to continue upgrades to a Garmin smartwatch. I've upgraded the watch band with 7 lithium polymer batteries in parallel with NTC protection for 3-4x overall battery life (+620 mAh). Now I'm considering maximizing storage to 64 or 128 gb. It turns a $110 watch from ebay into a model that hardware spec-wise beats their $900 models!

I imagine the reason for the storage difference in the reference in the $500 PCI Express SSD versus the $40 even see storage module is because there the base model for premium devices.
Yes you can have a 64 gig SSD running your computer but I really recommend having at least 128 so you have enough room for Chromeand you know other basic programs not including games and then having extra storage so you're SSD actually lasts more than 2 years

Thank you for subscribing. eMMC, uses an embedded, non-volatile memory system that has both NAND flash memory and a flash memory controller that is integrated on a single silicon die and is normally fused onto the host device's motherboard or a discrete PCB. Typical eMMC endurance is around 3000 P/E cycles. TLC is about the same (3k cycles) and MLC is 10k P/E cycles.

How do you transfer the files off of the eMMc flash storage? Assuming that is the type of storage it uses. Apologies, this is all new to me....LOL. Thanks for your help! We have removed it from the computer, now how do I transfer it off. Is there something simple I could buy at a local store without having to order online? To insert it in or enclose it in? Any files within the eMMc would need to be copied before removing it from the system. Personal files can be copied to a USB flash drive. After the files are copied, then remove the eMMc drive and install the larger capacity eMMc drive. .. Windows would need to be re-installed. The OS should be found here:

Yes, but a 64gb would be a better choice as 32gb is the minimum size.
Is it feasable to clone an emmc to a M.2 drive on a laptop? I have never tried that before but I may be trying it soon. It should be easy enough to select the boot drive in the BIOS afterwards right?

Thank you for the question. I have seen many Chromebooks go through my classroom and I have not seen any issues or problems that have the eMMC storage. I had one older Acer Chromebook equipped with an SSD that went bad. I replaced the SSD and it was up and running again.

What happened to the port openings in the back of computers to make it easier to replace batteries and hard drives? All those screws are ridiculous. I guess it's all about these corporations making more money. I would think they have enough by now.

There are many good deals out there. We often install 256 SSD drives in older laptops and that really gives them new life. We find those for around $45 at newegg. Thank you for the comments. Have a great day.

i upgraded my acer aspire es1-331 from 32gb emmc to 64gb emmc i can read and write the emmc also the 64gb is reconized but i m now not able to boot from it i think i have a issu with gpt mbr but the bios reconize it as 64gb internaly on the laptop motherboard i say it should possable

EMMC refers to a chip that's soldered to the motherboard(Embedded Multi Media Card), if it uses MSATA then it's technically not EMMC. Short answer: no
So eMMC is the newest (old now) data storage for laptops? For extra storage, backup files et. al. I could use an external hard drive instead of a flash card?
Yes. Internal storage on many laptops is m.2 and even a few have u.2. ext usb drives are very small and that is what I find myself using today.
Could we upgrade the RAM in 2GB to 4GB in emmc laptop?
Thank you for the very good question. On many laptops, as in everyone that I have taken apart in class, the laptops that have an eMMc storage also have non-upgradable RAM. The reason manufacturers use eMMc storage is to lower the cost of the laptop. Having non-upgradable RAM, also lowers their cost. So, no. generally speaking non-upgradable RAM is not an easy upgrade as just installing the correct So-Dimm memory.
how many times can we heat the emmc before it breaks or for it to not work anymore?

Which laptop model number? It should still charge even without an internal storage, something else must be wrong.

@@mybox6177 On that one unit , I am unsure how to do a reset of the BIOS as well. On some laptops we see a reset bios switch on mainboard, but I am not sure on that tablet.

Can you compare with ufs
UFS is the successor to the current eMMC standard for embedded NAND flash memory, and it aims to offer some of the benefits of faster SSD memory in a lower-energy chip. The package contains the NAND flash memory and controller, designed for small, mobile products. UFS offers some high performance benefits of the SATA interface, which is faster yet the UFS uses the flash-optimized low power consumption of eMMC.

If the application needs lower power consumption, then go with eMMC. If it needs to be faster, go with UFS. The difference in cost really only comes into play if you are dealing with hundreds of units.

Thank you for the question. First of all, changing the eMMC to M.2 requires a M.2 port on the main board. Next, M.2 storage uses more energy than the eMMc storage, as a result the battery life would be slightly less. Another issue to think about is bus speeds, as the two formats are different. If this new stream wasn't flashing I had thought that all those Microsoft updates would go on an external harddrive. But then there is this sporadic flashing of the screen on this computer, for what reason I don't know.

You can, if there is a port to connect the HDD, like M.2 or SATA. What I have seen is that many computer companies try to save as much money as possible by not including those ports.

Hello, awesome video. I have a question I have many old phones that I would like to have data recovered with the emmc but do I need an emmc reader? Or without soldering connect the chip from an old phone to a usb and then plug it into the computer or is it more complicated than I think it is, plus I would say I’m new to this. Hey does anyone know if it's possible to clone the eMMC to a SSD? I have a HP Notebook with 32 GB eMMC storage. The storage is full now after 3 yrs and I can't even download the windows 10 upgrades. I know I have a spare SATA connection so I can add a SSD with bigger storage. Only think idk is if there is a way to clone a eMMC to SSD so that the laptop boots up from the SSD and the eMMC becomes secondary storage. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

If you find a notebook with eMMC SSD on it with only 32GB then avoid, windows 10 requires to much memory when forcing it's updates on you that the 32GB will soon be all used up and you will end up with failed update notifications. As far as I'm concerned 120GB of memory is a minimum far any system. Then there is the RAM but don't get me started on that.
Very true. This is why I placed the Chrome OS on that one HP laptop that came with a 32GB eMMC. It was useless with Windows 10 because there was not enough space for any updates or apps. Once I installed the CloudReady OS on that unit , that HP laptop became very useful with offline apps like Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, etc. I made a video on that topic too.

@STS Tech New Chromebooks now support Linux apps . To turn on Linux support, Go to settings, then Linux (beta). Once it is installed, you have the terminal and can install Linux apps. One of my students just installed Steam on his Chromebook and he is stoked.

You could have gone more in-depth about a big downside of it, though, like lower longevity compared to SSDs and HDDs, and due how to it is soldered, there's the risk of your laptop that has eMMC only storage dying and becoming quite useless in less time than ones that allow you to put SATA HDD/SSD or M.2 SATA/NVMe SSDs in them. Also given how the chromebook/laptop like devices with it tend to be in the very budget tier of products, chances are the people who have them don't have the equipment and know-how to put another eMMC module in there to fix the issue.

There are way cheaper options in the m.2 and 2.5" SATA formats.

Sorry about that. Are you listening with a headset? I noticed that when I listen with headsets, the music seems louder. With regular speakers, the background music stays more in the background.
