  • For day 2 of Microsoftober, we're updating the incredible Surface Laptop Studio, Microsoft's top-end convertible laptop made for creators.
    If you'd like to do it yourself, here's some tips:
    - Follow along with Microsoft's written guide by downloading it here: learn.microsof...
    - Get an iFixit toolkit here: amzn.to/3Sw0ZXQ (this will have all of the tools you need, this is an affiliate link so I will receive a small amount of revenue with your purchase)
    - Get a replacement SSD here: amzn.to/3dUAIna (1TB) (this will have all of the tools you need, this is an affiliate link so I will receive a small amount of revenue with your purchase)
    - Save the plastic strip that goes along the frame of your Laptop Studio - Microsoft might not replace it!
    - Microsoft does sell rubber feet replacements for $5, if you go to the website, submit a service request for the Surface by finding it in your devices, and then in the comments say "need replacement rubber feet"
    - Ask any questions and watch the video all the way through before attempting!
    - Check out Macrium Reflect here: www.macrium.co...

    Big news everyone! Microsoft now sells the Cosmetic Plate directly on their website:

    2280 SSDs are considerably cheaper than the 2230 size, right now. So it is good to know this laptop can take either one. You cloned the existing SSD, with the Reflect software, to the new one and the OS was installed for you. That's even easier than a new install!

    This is fantastic! Thanks for the video, I'll do this when it comes time to replace the battery which Microsoft is also selling (although it's currently out of stock). You're also 100% correct that this should be industry standard. Let us fix and upgrade ourselves.

    Is there any guide about nvme drives compatibility? I upgraded my laptop studio from 256GB to 1TB WD black and after 1 day I started getting BSODs and after a while, the machine would not boot, because it did not recognize the drive anymore. I put the original disk back in and everything was working smooth.
    Then I got another 1TB drive to upgrade, this time it was 1TB WD blue. Worked fine for 2 days and than a similar scenario. So I guess I am back to the original 256GB again:(

    I wish the RAM was upgradable, I have the SLS with Dedicated graphics, 16GB RAM and 512 SSD, for me, I am running VM's mostly and its RAM intensive,
    16GB just about cuts it but at times the VMs fail to boot due to insufficient RAM resource being available.

    can you put in a 2tb or 4tb SSD like WD SN850X ?

  • @smilingskull7827
    @smilingskull7827 Год назад +1

    no offence, but you're worried not to scratch where you wont see it after putting back the rubber feet but you're sliding the top around the table where I'm sure you'll have scuffs and such.

    Cool. To backup the existing ssd, could you usb boot a version of linux and just use dd to dump the whole existing ssd? I used to do this for iso's and ide drives but I'm not sure if there's some device protection that prevents ssd access under linux.

    • @innoiso
      @innoiso  Год назад

      There might be some bios configuration changes required, but you should be able to do so if you find a build that supports the firmware (that's a tough one for everything to work properly, but it sounds like you've got some experience)

    Hey man, why not use a little heat to soften the adhesive? I’d bet those strips would come off unstretched if you use a hair dryer on it for a couple of seconds.

    • @innoiso
      @innoiso  Год назад

      Not a bad idea, I’m just not sure if the rubber feet would stretch from the heat as well. I’ll try it next time

    Do I have to do the storage transfer thing at the start of the video if I do the ssd upgrade with a new studio laptop?. I just bought mine today and I want to upgrade the ssd. So can I skip the storage transfer and get started with opening the laptop?

    • @innoiso
      @innoiso  Год назад

      Don't need to do the storage transfer! Just need to install windows on the new SSD!
