For anybody looking to do this, Corsair have recently launched the MP600 MINI 2230 2TB Gen4x4 ssd with a claimed 7,000MB/s read and 6,200MB/s write which looks to be the first 2230 drive to match the speed of decent 2280 sized drives. I haven't seen actual benchmarks of it yet though.

    Great video Jeremy
I will probably get the Surface laptop 7 with 256GB SSD then upgrade to 1TB rather than go for the model with 1TB ready installed. Works out cheaper and then I end up with a spare SSD.
Can anyone give me the specs for the original SSD ? I want to make sure the one I buy is of comparable quality.

I decided to go for the Silicon Power SSD as Jeremy did. The whole process was really easy folowing his clear instructions.
My new Surface laptop with new SSD ran great for about 5 days without a hitch untill it didnt.
It suddenly stopped working and came up with a Blue screen. "Couldnt find a bootable operating system.....
There was nothing I could do about it, so I swopped it back out with the original SSD. Now all seems to be good again.
I suspect that the SSD developed a fault.

It's no bother. I don't have a perfect or scientific answer. I didn't transfer that cladding to mine. I don't think it hurts to transfer that over, but I personally haven't had any issues now in 3 months of hard use. Many of the laptops I've disassembled over the years don't have the cladding and it's a shared part for other Surface devices with 2230 SSDs where spaces are tighter, but it is there in the original design. The Pro has tighter space than the laptop, so it would benefit more. I wanted to keep the original as-is with cladding in case I did need to go back to the 512GB SSD. My sample size is just 1, so I can't speak to every use case or test environment.

      I haven't seen a Gen 5 in the shorter 2230 m.2 form factor tbh.

There are none and probably never will be due to the crazy power draw needed would cause random shut downs and blue screens. This already happening with some of the gen 4 M.2 2230s now.

How big an ssd can you add?

2TB appears to be the largest for the 2230 form factor. The normal, longer ones are bigger and can also be faster.

Do all this without making a ssd benchmark...

I doubt it's faster than the OE SSD, I primarily wanted capacity, even if the speeds are the same or slightly less.

😂 I’d say you’re very over qualified and have a great internal support system around you if you should need it

Thanks. Yes, I've installed Windows a few times and taken quite a few devices apart. It's been a solid SSD swap though for 2+ months of video rendering and upscaling. I don't want to jinx it, but no support needed so far. 🙂
