Space Dyed Braid to Gradient Yarn WITHOUT a Drumcarder-Hand Cards Only W/Corriedale! Chain Ply too!

- Welcome! A few weeks ago, I turned a space dyed braid into gradient yarn using a drum carder, and there was an overwhelming response asking for the version with hand cards. Here we goooo! I'll chain ply it to preserve the color progression as well as spin 532 yards of yarn from a 4 oz. braid of Corriedale I pulled from shop inventory for this video! You don't need a drumcarder for this!

I went through, and sometimes still go through, thinking my handspun isn’t good enough to sell, but I try to listen to others when it comes to judging my own work, instead of that meanie who lives in my head.

Trish, some of our only knitters/crocheters would love hand spun yarn from your hands. Your yarns ARE good enough to sell if you chose to do so. You could call it the Yard Sale so its not something you feel you have to do to stock your shop but for the times you just want to sell some hand spun. Have you tried doing this blending without any tools at all?

I like that term...troll tuft. You made a "troll pencil topper" lol. Sometimes I put my card in a vice I made and pull the blends off like roving similar to how you do off combs. Big S for "sheep" and because it looks cool lol. I've not tried to do a fade with a braid yet. I might have to see what all I have. I know a lot of what I have will be too cool as is to break them apart but I bet there's one I wouldn't mind sacrificing lol.

Trish, this turned out so beautifully. I think that when I see handspun, I expect even work, but I also expect the small differences and inconsistencies that mark the hand of the maker. Also, thank you for doing a video emphasizing handcards--I'm making a point to stick with the tools I have and trying not to covet the next "thing" that I don't have, and that includes a wheel and drum carder (I do all my spinning right now on spindles). So lower-tech possibilities are wonderful!

This would be great as a self-made advent spin! I've been trying to come up with an idea for this year. A mini-batt, a piece of candy, maybe a little dollar-store treat in a paper bag. It won't be a surprise, but it would still be a bit of a treat in December.

I like hand carding rolags. It allows me to take my spinning in smaller sections.

this is such a great technique to show since a lot of people really would love the effect but don't have a drum carder! I'm seriously trying to mentally go through my stash to find a similar style braid!

I love seeing a gradient made by hand. I think I'm going to try it with the 2 braids of Pansy I bought from you.
BTW, another way to look at the direction of the twist is by writing down an "S" or a "Z" to represent the ply twist. If you rotate the piece of paper 180 degrees you will still have an "S" or a "Z". The configuration doesn't change.
PS, you should totally list your handspun! Your spinning is beautiful and not everyone has the time to spin your hand dyed fiber.
You could also probably sell washed fiber. Some of us are a bit intimidated by that whole process!😅

What an absolutely stunning yarn thank you for showing the hand carded way I still only have dog brushes lol but I use my drum carder. I chain ply everything unless I do a four ply I'm rather boring that way hah lots of love and big virtual hugs to you and John x

Watching this it looks like it would be easy to do this on a blending board too. Long as you do similar batches like you just did with your carders. But make rollogs out of the batches and then organize them by color to spin? I hope I'm following you on this? (Don't have carders yet, lol) Looks really great!

I'm a bit all over the place when i spin (something I'm working to correct), but watching you spin is so zen for me. Super nice yarn! I hope you had fun making it. Oh! I love that you also show the end result! Since you are working with a one-treadle Matchless: Would you rather have a two-treadle spinning wheel or do you like the one-treadle more? I'd love to invest into a Matchless next year but can't decide which version is better.
I never treadle with both feet even on my double treadle wheels. I purchased this wheel with a single treadle deliberately for that reason, but there's no right or wrong.
