    A layer 3 switch, also known as a multilayer switch, is a network switch that can perform routing functions in addition to switching. This means that it can forward packets between different networks, or subnets, based on their IP addresses. Layer 3 switches are often used in enterprise networks to route traffic between different VLANs (virtual local area networks).
    How does a layer 3 switch work?
    Layer 3 switches use a routing table to determine the best path for a packet to take. The routing table is a database of IP addresses and the associated subnets. When a layer 3 switch receives a packet, it looks up the destination IP address in the routing table to determine which port to forward the packet to.
    Benefits of using layer 3 switches
    Layer 3 switches offer a number of benefits over traditional layer 2 switches, including:
    Improved performance: Layer 3 switches can forward traffic between subnets faster than layer 2 switches because they do not need to perform any MAC address lookups.
    Reduced network complexity: Layer 3 switches can simplify network design by eliminating the need for dedicated routers.
    Increased scalability: Layer 3 switches can support larger networks than layer 2 switches because they can forward traffic between multiple subnets.
    When to use layer 3 switches
    Layer 3 switches are a good choice for networks that:
    Have multiple subnets
    Need high-performance routing between subnets
    Need to simplify the network design
    Need to support a large number of devices
    Examples of layer 3 switches
    Some popular examples of layer 3 switches include:
    Cisco Catalyst 9000 series
    Juniper Networks MX series
    HPE Aruba CX series
    Dell EMC PowerSwitch S series
