Geography Student here: It's actually a really common phenomenon and called "soil liquefaction" To make a very simplified explanation: When a soil is really really saturated with water (for example because it rained a lot) and there is a sudden great mechanical force applied onto the soil, the pressure of the water inside of the little pores between the grains of sand changes, so that the individual grains of sand are not touching each other anymore but are now "floating" in the water. The same phenomenon is responsible for nearly all mudslides. when you search on youtube there are videos of pieces of mountain just breaking of, liquifiying, and rushing down the mountain like a river of mud. The same thing can happen when there is an earthquake in a really wet area: Houses will just sink into the ground, and sewer pipes will just pop up to the surface because the whole ground liquifies for a few minutes during the eartquake.

Over 200 people died in that disaster, so sad. And if you don't think something like this has ever happened in the U.S., Google Buffalo Creek Disaster.
Being German myself, I can proudly tell you that the German certification services company TÜV SÜD had confirmed the dam's safety just a couple of month before. After Volkswagen's diesel gate just another friendly reminder what Quality made in Germany stands for these days.

m just tryin to make this sadder 😂
not just mud. 100% toxic waste from mines. horrible
@Nick Nelson its iron ore extracting residue, this was in an operational mining company facility
Erlon Junior ..you heard that on news?
Don’t spread misinformation
Erlon Junior - the “residue” is just fine particles of iron ore. Get a science education.
Light Yagami - this isn’t peat, it’s iron ore. Not sure what you were saying
Prayers for those that lost someone on that day.
Necessary historical video. Thanks
At first I thought the guy in the car @0:58 was a fool for circling back the the trailer instead of driving out of there. Then I realized he went back to try and warn the other people that were there of what was happening. You can see a dump truck take off with the back still up and I think he stops to let people in. What a great human.
Missing means Dead, just a softer word for Dead.
Missing just referring to the body :/
Except its not but ok
Um dos momentos mais tristes da história do país
My goodness Can't imagine working a job where the entire earth is above your head awaiting to collapse on a daily basis. Rest and peace to those who perish on these jobs.
Pretty sure we saw quite a few of those 115 dead and 248 missing at about :55 What a nightmare! So sorry for everyone affected by this!
I'm so very sorry for the Souls lost and those missing. I pray their hearts heal as time goes by ( I know that time is the only thing that helps lighten it slightly )
I wasn't expecting to see any people or moving vehicles. Shocking. RIP brothers and sisters.
Over 200 people died in that disaster, so sad. There are dams all over the world like that from mining, including numerous in the U.S. Google Brushy Fork Sludge Impoundment, it's estimated (by a US safety org) that nearly 1,000 people could die if that impoundment were to ever fail. And if you don't think something like this has ever happened in the U.S., Google Buffalo Creek Disaster.
Sad
Beyond comprehension to see that wall of mud and water coming at you in a car. Those poor souls.
Being German myself, I can proudly tell you that the German certification services company TÜV SÜD had confirmed the dam's safety just a couple of month before. After Volkswagen's diesel gate just another friendly reminder what Quality made in Germany stands for these days.
at around 0:20 you can see people running near the center-right of the screen if you look really hard. a vehicle tries getting away as well.
0:55 That car’s U-turn! 😂😂😂
Sad. People never knew what hit them and many im sure, saw it coming. RIP to all those lives lost.
so... if they saw it coming... they knew what hit them... water and soil
Thats what happens when you're cutting down forests on hillsides.
and accumulating toxic mining waste inside cheap containment. The company should face criminal charges
When reality looks like bad CG... run. Think later and just run.
This is one of the few times the actual video is better than the thumbnail.
What was the name of this dam and who built it?
Such devastation...so tragic
Sou brasileira e me sinto envergonhada por essa tragédia!!! E até hoje os responsáveis estão soltos!!!!!🇧🇷
Those driver must of been so scared, I was freaking out for them. How many ppl died from this, it looks very devastating.
Look at the end
poliN MM thank you, I couldn't watch to the end. Too sad for drivers
man I would have been driving over forest, trees, barriers to get away from that. Looks like he panicked and gave up. Even would have run out of the car going right over those barriers.
some of them survived
Holy mother of everything that is sacred.
This is wild. The footage almost looks like it’s in slow motion until the in action automobiles make their appearance.
In the end, mother nature will ALWAYS win....😢
Sadly it makes me remeber the similar accident what happend in Hungary 😔
Dude I don't know why but I've had this kind of dream 20 times this year. Only I was on the ground and the massive wave of earth is barreling towards me.
Is the 248 missing found yet ?
The two guys in the pickup actually survived. BBC did an interview with the driver
1:39 .... video says 2018. Time/date stamp says 2019.
Date is in European format - 25/01/2019 is January 25, 2019. If you still see 2018, get a bigger screen
