- The Gemmer manual Steering box is an extraoridnarily simple mechanism. It's too bad there is no aftermarket support for the internals. The vendors would love to carry it but it doesn't look like anyone, anywhere carries the rebuild kits for these.
Come along as I tear into mine and see if it can be saved! Авто/Мото
Great video, I’m going to be switching mine over to power steering later on I’ve still got the manual steering box in my bronco
Thank you for sharing your experience
Hey Matt,
Nice job. As I think both of us were surprised to see there were no ball bearings inline in a tube. I had not seen the roller type sector shaft before. Adjusting the adjustment nut and bolt on top of the sector shaft was my previous concern for possible bind. I was happy to see a bench test and caution considered for operation under a load. Very fun to watch!
I was thinking of your comments while I was doing this Tim.
@@MattsGarage I'm not sure if that was good or bad? This box was not as complicated as the mustang that I had worked on so I feel a little silly telling you how difficult it was going to be. The bind issue is real but I know you are aware. I had to catch up on a couple videos as they stopped populating in my recommended watch list. I rang the bell so hopefully that will take care of that situation. :)
Well done!
Super video. Thanks
I typically do what you did to get the majority of the hardened grease off first, then hit it with brake cleaner. It will harden the remaining grease, which will just scrape of chip off. I hate dealing with oven cleaner. Kind of a mess!
The problem is the brake cleaner just runs out so quickly!
Before you put the box back on you should really tube the frame where the mounting bolts go through for strength..
Can you post where you found any replacement parts, like your seals, that you used during the rebuild of the steering box?
I say the sector shaft seal # in the video. I just put that into eBay and that was the only part I could find and the only part I ended up needing to change.
Call Bluetooth steering gears he may have parts.
You gotta center the box before you replace the pitman arm
Even if I marked the sector shaft on the Pitman arm and put it in the same orientation?
When you rotate all the way one way then go back to center and do the same thing in the opposite direction you should be able to feel the center as you get close in both directions once you do that now look to see if your marks line up.
