    I know several people who bought old tractors thinking that they could get some work done with them, only to find out that the only work that got done was TO the old tractor. I can't think of anybody better prepared to work on an old tractor than our man Viny B, and this video proves just that. Thanks again, Viny, for more fantastic entertainment!

      If you buy a tractor or any other heavy equipment in that age, you definitely have to do some (a lot) of work to it to bring it back to a decent shape or even revive it from the death. But let's assume you didn't buy someting that only has use as scrap metal and that there's no issue like spare parts that can't be obtained anymore. At those times there was no electronics, so you can fix almost anything.
      Once you did the needful to fix stuff that inevitably is broken, you can get a good deal of work done in a reasonable time that you otherwise probably wouldn't be able at all. I for example was digging out some tree stumps with my 1985 backhoe, which would be in the ground for the next 10 years to rot if I wouldn't have convinced my wife to allow me the budget for a machine. I'm pretty sure, I'd never have fixed my driveway with a wheelbarrow and a shovel either. And moving firewood can of course be done without a machine, but it would take not only a few minutes more...
      So, while I sunk countless hours into addressing certain issues, it also has given me opportunities that I otherwise wouldn't have had. I count time as a currency that I exchange for the power to do things.

    Nice to see more people using these one thing I will add is, be carefull when welding to the output/input side of the saturn vue motors, they have plastic reduction gears inside the unit that are attached to the splined center shaft, not trying to discourage people from this mod, but just saying take your time with the welds especially if they are vary close to the center motor unit, and take your time and let it cool for a few minutes when welding it, well if you want to be careful with it, also a good tip to keep operating tempretures lower and improve reliability, you can extend the 4 wires and remote mount the stock saturn electronic control unit and bolt it to its own remote heatsink, if that is too much work at the least I would suggest you carefully remove the control unit clean the old thermal paste off, and apply new high quality thermal paste to the unit sometimes the factory is a bit conservative with the application of the thermal paste.

    I think you should install limit switches to stop the assistance before the steering locks to not cause excessive wear or premature failure to *all* components. The car computer used the feedback from the steering wheel angle sensor to do that.

    Used on an automobile, the power unit only works hard while parking. The tractor application has it working hard almost full time. Long duty cycle. Wonder if a small 12v fan would help. Looks like there would be room enough. Pretty creative sheet metal work.

    • @mwilliamshs
      @mwilliamshs Год назад +2

      Used on an automobile it worked against a much higher gear ratio in the steering box (remember, the tractor was designed with enough mechanical advantage to be steered without assistance) so now the power steering unit is working only as hard as his arms used to and without the cornering forces, speeds, and lateral traction of an automobile.

    Tip for wiring anything even house wiring. Use dielectric grease on all connections. the dielectric grease keeps the connections from oxidizing, and failing. I learned this trick when I owned a Honda car. I had to take apart the electrical connections to replace headlights and find the clear sticky substance in the connectors. Found out it was dielectric grease. It really has worked well for me. House wiring extreme example, I had some outdoor yard lights with high power quartz halogen bulbs and they would only last a month or so. I added a lot of dielectric grease to the bulb connectors and the bulbs then lasted over a year. I don't wire anything now without applying it.

    My best advice for working with electrical stuff - never ever trust the colors of the wires if you hadn't worked on something before. Just because the green wire is marked as ground that doesn't mean it is. I've heard people got electrocuted working on house installations because the ground was connected to live. Always check the wires with a multimeter. Great video!

    xD i hate you - now i want a small tractor too. I think about it for some time but can't find any affordable here in northern germany. I look for a Ferguson TEA-20 or MF 65. They are quite nice with the small diesel engine.

    Lol... I had a Massey Harris 50 with difficult steering, for the decades I possessed it, with no loader/bucket. I thought power steering might be needed, but after rebuilding the gearbox & greasing all joints (king pin & tie rod), it steered so smooth & easy...power steering would not have made it any better!

      I agree, my tractor without the loader, is absolutely fine! The loader is the big killer here!

    Seems like since your tractor has hydraulics that maybe a hydraulic booster could be added to the steering system with less work; maybe not. Worth exploring.

    If you use the adjustable pot for power steering force, does it change the tactile 'feedback' from the steering? I hate driving rental cars with electric power steering, but if there was more wheel feedback, it might be interesting for other projects.
    Great for your tractor of course. Thanks for the video!

    • @VinyB57
      @VinyB57  Год назад

      Well you really feel it, It's harder when the POT is at a low setting. I always run it full on!

      @@VinyB57 I was going to say that those potentiometer based (usually a 555 timer inside) controllers are notorious for 'drift' - as they heat up the assistance varies - and there's a much better speed sensitive controller which mimicks the original ECU/speed feed etc using a speedo pulse.
      Then I remembered this is a tractor, not a race car.. and you run it full-on anyway :)

    If this is the tractor I think it is it's made by Yanmar to Massey Ferguson's specs. I was looking at a similar unit at the local Kubota dealer last year before I got my new Massey Ferguson GC 1723E from the local MF dealer. The only difference is the tractor I was originally looking at was a Allis Chalmers model of the same machine. When I did research on it supposedly Yanmar made the same tractor for Massey Ferguson, Allis Chalmers and Bolens. The only difference between the three besides the colors and branding were the hood/bonnet design. Other than that they were they same machine in different clothing with the same 2-cylinder diesel in it. :)

    Can you add a computer case fan to the underneath of the dash...or one end of the p/s unit...to blow cooling air over the p/s unit?
    Probably 90% of steering effort in a normal road going vehicle is in a straight line...sothe p/s is not "working"...
    whereas you are now using the p/s to turn 90 degree corners every 30 seconds or less......
    I have a 30 year old heavy diesel powered SUV with hydraulic p/s...worm and ball mechanism...
    and it tracks nice and straight with minimal movement/input by me on straight 100kmh tarmac roads..
    Recently we bought a 2004 station wagon with electric p/s...and it "wanders" much more at 100kmh....
    so easy to overcorrect and progress in sinuous curves....
    on a dead straight piece of tarmac road!
    I just about need one of those "effort adjusters"....
    perhaps manufacturers should have taken note of the automatic effort adjuster in the Citroen SM p/s from the 1970's?

    Cool project, probably the only MF tractor with electric power steering. At first I thought you where going to use the Prius steering unit everybody else uses.
    What happens if the power steering hits the end travel in the halfmoon- gear below?, I hope it stops at too much force...

      I heard that in the Prius it turns into limp mode when its not connected to the ecu and have like half the power...that s what I heard tho🤷‍♂️ Well while testing, I went to the end of stroke hard and I broke some teeth on the pignon...stupid me!! But I got a spare one for way too much money! 🤦‍♂️ So good call!

    bonjour cousin , je suppose que pour les connections de la colonne de direction d'origine et du volant sur la colonne de direction assistée , tu as sécurisé plus que " tapi tap pap " : vissage ou goupille élastique style mécanindus ? sinon bravo pour le boulot et comme toujours pour la finition qui laisse toujours l'impression du montage d'origine . Un moteur de direction plus puissant et des fils d'alimentation du moteur de direction plus gros ne seront peut être pas de trop . Encore bravo cousin . A bientôt .
