Its tighter on the middle that is straight ahead your on that more and it has to be tighter tolerance there in center to lessen steering play. More tolerance as you are turning more to reduce friction and load on the gear
I have found that you adjust at straight ahead will be a little sloppy when turned more on the outer teeth. If you adjust off center could be to tight on center causing more strain on the center tooth. Maybe someone tightened it. I have only done a couple of em. No expert
