  • In this video we will be testing out and reviewing the new MAP EMBED Feeders. I saw these feeders about a week ago online and decided to give them a go!
    To me they seemed to be quite innovative and have an edge on the method feeders already on the market, so I stocked up on them and set out after work to test them out for you guys!

    Another great video Westy👌🏻 I’ve been reading a lot about these ‘clips’ recently. Guru do a clip on adaptor for there feeders. From what I understand the idea is not to act as a ‘bolt mechanism’ but to hold the hook bait within the feeder as the method pellets/groundbait expands on the lake bed. (Guru have done an underwater video, showing that as the pellets/groundbait expand with taking on water, the hook bait tends to be forced out of the feeder away from the pellets/groundbait, leaving it less effective). The clip idea is to hold your hook & bait within the feeder as the pellets/groundbait expands. I have made my own adapted version by sticking a small piece of high density foam inside the feeder (at the hook length end) & making a cut slot in the foam. This 100% works as it holds the hook length firmly, but not aggressively. I’ve found that every time I reel back in too re-cast, the hook length is still in situ, even though the method pellets have dispersed. I also think by using the foam, it is a lot ‘freer’ to release the hoook length on a take from a fish. Also the foam is kinder on the hook line. I’ll be interested in your forthcoming tests to see how you get on. Oh, and the other thing about my adaption - a lot cheaper than £3 a feeder, I’ve just adapted all my existing feeders - methods, banjos & hybrids, & it only cost couple of pence for the foam & superglue!!!👍🏻🎣

    The Guru underwater videos with Steve Ringer show that shortening the hook length down to 2inches was not giving fish enough run to get trapped by the hook. They were feeling the weight of the feeder straight away and ejecting them. The clip, although good for keeping the bait in the pellet pile is equivalent of only having a 1 inch hooklength. Love the vids. Thanks for providing something decent to watch mate👍👍👍😁😁

    From what I have seen and read, the primary task of the clip is to keep the bait within the feeder, so If it lands on a slope or the pellets push out fast your hook bait won't end up 4 inches away from the feeder

    Great vlog, well filmed, excellently illustrated and clear dialogue. I have thought about buyng some but after watching Guru underway tests the conclusion was that two inch hook lengths made it easy for the carp to eject the bait as they had an easer time to feel early resistance and eject the shorter length. I feel that the new feeders do reduce the hook length to around that problem length and as you found out get away with the wafter. I think that I will stay with my Preston ICS until I can see better results from what should have been a great idea.
    Also by you not using the clip the full length of your hook length was fully active.
    Just an opinion but the jury is still out for me.
    Stay safe and thanks

    Great to follow you Westy! I’ve also been using these feeders a couple of weeks now, and as others advised just need a thin sharp blade to deepen the slot. One of the main uses of the slot is to allow shorter hook lengths which can help with hooking finicky carp, and it works well! Also Preston moulds fit them. Cheers

    • @carpfishingcolorado
      @carpfishingcolorado Год назад +1

      I used these for the first time yesterday. Found that the "clip" weakens after several casts and won't hold the line but I'll try your solution. Thank you.

    • @carpfishingcolorado
      @carpfishingcolorado Год назад +1

      Yesterday I did the following after the line wouldn't stay in the groove. If you use a short hook length connected to a swivel make the hook link connected to the swivel with a longish loop. The loop knot holds in the groove well but not so tight that it doesn't give when a fish takes the bait.

    • @WestysAngling
      @WestysAngling  Год назад +1

      I think the main problem with them is that it shortens the hooklength to 2inch and I have found a 4inch hooklength optimum for carp. The reason being it allows the carp to fully take the bait into its mouth and the hook catches on the inside of its mouth on the outward ejection 🎣

      @@WestysAngling Totally agree, but I’ve had sessions where the carp just nose the bait and are very finicky (hope that’s a real word Lol) This shows up as getting pestered by small silvers, small nocks and such. But a shorter hook length sometimes gives the carp less time to spit out the bait. In this situation It’s worth trying especially if using the MAP feeder. 😀

I have adapted them by removing the grip and tying my hook length with a X large float stop on it, I then place the float stop in the gap where the original grip was and it work's for me, caught a few tench on this set up but it's not very good to have to do this when you have bought them with great expectations!!!

    Update from Colorado: Have tested further and to hold the hook and bait in place am now using stripped Cygnet Semi-Stiff Coated Hooklink (15lb). Once stripped I found a hook with a large enough eye (Fox Carp Hook Wide Gape Beaked size 8) to allow the stripped line to pass through three times. Why three times? To make a loop for the spike or band (e.g. Gardner Latex Band 3.2mm for 8mm pellet). The stripped hooklink is held perfectly in the "grip". Much less fiddly than using a knife to deepen the rut in the grip or a float stop although the latter two may work for smaller species' needs.

    In conclusion: MAP Embed Feeders
    Having read a fair number of reviews the conclusion seeems to be that the weakest part of these feeders is the line grip. After my use I agree but it only loosens after a period of time after getting wet. When, I believe, is dependent on the thickness of the line you are using.
    Best solution is to have a float stop on your hook length that you use in the grip.
    Length of hook length
    Doesn't seem to matter. When a fish takes the bait and snatches the line out of the grip, the feeder is going to stay away from its mouth. The only thing I have a concern about is the length of the loop from the swivel to where the grip is. The shorter the length the less chance of that loop getting snagged.
    I am a firm believer that keeping the bait over the feed that is in the feeder is the key. (Don't move the feeder after the cast!)
    NB Works well in weedy areas as there appears to be no separation of the feeder's bait or feed. Everything stays put.

    Going by the Guru underwater series a super short hooklegnths seems ineffective, 4 inch seems the optimum length, I modified my feeders from an idea by "That's On" on RUclips, all you do is make a 2 mill groove in your chosen method feeder with a tiny file at hooklegnth end, then any hooklegnths you make you slide a floatstop on first before tying off the loop, the stop will then fit in the groove you've made, obviously this can't apply to ready made hooklegnths, I have not tested them yet as I'm not fishing carp waters at the moment.
    The Embeds seem to reinforce Gurus thinking though which is a shame, to keep a wafter in place I simply gently attach a no6 stotz about 10 mill from the hook, seems to wok looking at tank tests, tight lines pal.

    • @WestysAngling

      Some match spivs also prefer the hookbait to roll off into the surrounding area of bait that's dropped off the feeder, a hungry carp will hoover the lot off, seems we as anglers can overthink it sometimes lol, all the best mate.

      Been playing around with 2" hooklengths this year, especially with pellet feeders and had some fantastic results. One thing for sure is I do not use QM1 hooks as I find the gape from the point to shank is to short. I've been using MWG and KKHB hooks and getting fantastic hook holds. This is a wide gape pattern. Just saying don't rule them out altogether 👍

      You can pull it out with your hand because you are putting reverse force on the line by holding it. When the fish is on the hook the force is just going to the rod and reel. Sound of but it works, the hook-length will never pull out the insert buddy 🎣👌🏻
