Everyone keeps saying that Nintendo lost the licensing agreement for these brands, but I don't think that is the main reason for the de-branding of Pikmin 2. This was never an issue for the Wii or Wii U re-releases. I think it's more likely that the generic treasures had to be made for the new Korean and Chinese localizations, then the decision was made to use them for all regions since that is easier / cheaper than re-acquiring the licenses.

@Fllook12 The WiiU wasn't like the Switch, you could actually buy previous gen games on it, including GBA and DS (GB/GBC where 3ds only and the GameCube library was never available for download). This included the Wii versions of Pikmin 1 and 2.

I saw the peanut butter while playing the game and thought to myself "Wait, did they not remove ALL of the product placement?" The little peanut characters make it look so much like an actual brand
Drought ender being a coconut water brand with a palm and water makes much more sense than Dr. Pepper since olimar's species might not know how to read English/human language, but could identify the picture. Same goes for flavor gate and the aloe balm. Having pictures explains how their species would get so close to the original meaning of the object
What really tickled me was that they even added nutrient facts to items which would naturally have them irl. They really didn't have to do it, but they made all of these feel like actual items you'd find in the real world, with the tiny little details on real packages and everything. This is the best possible outcome from a Pikmin 2 re-release imo. Now lets talk about that horrid squished font lmao
Thank God the replacements actually look good. Same weekend keep the product placement but I totally understand why and this helps the game have more longevity if for whatever reason it re-releases again
I got a feeling that the 19th anniversary orange juice bottle cap could also be talking about how its been 19 years since PIKMIN 2 was first brought out on gamecube. April 29th 2004, 19 years and about 3 months since it was first released
I was initially pretty upset about the product placement being removed, but i'd say at least half of the new ones are either just as good or in some cases better than previous. Also, it's only about 10% of the total treasure hoard, so it won't be too noticeable overall. My only complaint is that the change from carmex -> aloe vera cream changes the color of the item from yellow to green. In my opinion, the yellow carmex texture served a gameplay purpose, clueing in the player that this item can only be obtained with yellow pikmin, and is the first item in the game the player encounters that is locked behind yellows. This creates a subtle mental association with the color yellow and high places very early on in the game. I wish they had kept the yellow coloration when they changed the branding, but I suppose green is better than any of the other existing pikmin colors.
You can actually get that treasure with Purples too if you throw them with momentum into the right part of the wall there. I don't remember but you might even be able to do that with other colors too? But purple is easiest since you only need to do it once
@@pikmin937 It doesn't matter if you can jank the treasure down with other pikmin, the purpose is to associate the color yellow with treasures located in very high spots. This is about teaching the player game mechanics through environmental cues.
Most people playing 2 will likely have played 1 (and maybe even 3) and know about the yellow’s high throwing ability already, on top of the game mentioning it anyway. Not a huge loss
@IceBlueLugia yeah, plus you'd have to go through that area with a squad of yellows anyway in order to get to the electric gate barring the Blue Pikmin, so there's little chance of missing the item without a squad of yellows on hand.
maybe it's because I'm not an absolutely soulless man-in-suit who runs a billion dollar company and yet can't fathom losing a single dollar, but I can't fathom why you WOULDN'T want your product in a NINTENDO GAME
These are literally the embodiment of that ‘mom can we get X?’ ‘We have X at home’ meme. It’s a shame to see the actual logos go since that added to the game’s charm, but its hardly game breaking and I fully understand why. At least now they have a version they can port over way easier to future consoles if needed. My only nitpick with the new designs is some of them have fictional brands while most don’t, leaving a lot of them looking more generic than others.
Wow! I was aware of the Duracell battery and the 7up bottle cap as Pikmin treasures, but I didn’t realize how many other real-world products were featured in the series. Did they use the same brands across all different regions? I can't imagine Vlasic having the same level of recognition in Europe or Japan as in the United States.
I know the european version changed a lot of the treasures, not sure about the japanese one, but I'd highly reccomend checking the wiki to see all the differences across all the versions
Oh, they changed a LOT of treasures for the Japanese release. Some ones I know off the top of my head are that the Ancient Ad Series is completely gone, as is the Survival Series; the latter is exclusive to the American version. Interestingly, the Alien Billboard is still in the Japanese version, but it’s in the Odd Logo Series instead. There’s now an entire series dedicated to the little paper covers of Japanese milk cartons, called the Mystical Disc Series, which has I think 12 entries, each one a different brand. I also know that the Duracell batteries are completely gone, instead replaced by a different company in Japan. There’s actually six batteries in the Japanese version, not four. Those are just the changes I know off the top of my head. There’s WAY more where that came from.
we lost every major, food, drink, battery, and non consumable object in pikmin 2. RIP funny brand references. (on a side note. Alot of the new designs reminded me of store brand stuff, so solid job on their part)
The removal of the Dr. Pepper cap, and the Ragu lid (while, for good reason) hurts my childhood soul... Playing Pikmin 2 while I was little, Ragu-made Pasta in one hand and Dr. Pepper in the other. Finding those treasures, made for a truly unforgettable experience. R.I.P 2004 Nintendo brand deals.
Most of the jars lids and bottle caps are exclusive to the us release along with the survival series of treasures Japan's exclusive treasures are mostly tabs from the tops of milk bottles a popsicle stick and some kitchenware there's also less batteries and the few that are in the game use national hitop brand batteries instead of duracell
@@Exofrickit's actually the opposite, Japan had 2 more batteries, not less. But yah, a lot of Milk tabs for whatever reason. Even the bottle opener is specifically a milk bottle opener in Japan.
I was initially a bit sad they had to change these, but whoever did the new textures in the Switch version did a great job making them believable, and not sticking out like a sore thumb
The curious thing about this, is how the new treasures look more like modern products rather than designs similar to products around the time Pikmin 2 originally released. Like that apple juice can, that looks like a present day product. This is actually really neat because if PNF-404 is post-apocalypse Earth, then of COURSE the items left behind that survived would be as modern as time got on Pikmin-Earth.
I was kind of wondering if this version of Earth actually faced some apocalyptic in the early to mid 2000s. In the Pikmin 4 trailer, we see a GBA SP. In Pikmin 3, the only phones we see are flip phones even though the game came out in 2013. I haven't watched all the Pikmin 4 trailers (I'd rather be surprised) but it seems that we haven't seen anything truly modern in any of these games yet.
I played Pikmin 2 for the first time in 2017 shortly after my dad's passing to get my mind off of things, but when I saw the Kiwi shoe polish and the Chap Stick (Items that my dad used back in his day), I chose to put the game down. It got a little uncomfortable that the game was reminding me of my late dad.😅 Just a weird coincidence I guess.
Never underestimate just how effective this kind of product placement can be. I was 11 when WipEout 2097 was released in 1996; it was one of my all-time favourite games and featured heavy product placement by Red Bull. Even to this day, nearly 30 years later, I am still brand loyal to RB because it featured so prominently in a cherished childhood game. I wonder how many people in their mid-to-late 20’s now feel similarly about the brands featured in this game?
2:53 Gherkin Gate is the only one they changed the name of, to Flavor Gate. But why? They could have just made a generic pickle lid instead of switching it to an orange jam lid.
I'd guess it's because the word "gherkin" isn't used for a pickled cucumber in parts of the English speaking world, so they wanted to make it more universal.
@@xsmallmusic2174 I never knew what gherkin was when watching the great British bake off but never bothered to Google it for whatever reason. Now I know lol
@@xsmallmusic2174 Yep, it's a pickle! I know Australians and English speaking countries in Europe use "gherkin", and I think it was sometimes used by older generations in North America.
I understand why the changes were made. This isn't like keeping the Kawasaki brand in Wave Race 64, that's just one company. To get all the contracts and approvals from all the multiple companies could take forever.
It's interesting that all of the original branded treasures depict slightly vintage looking logos, and it's nice they continued that feel with many of the redesigns!
That Duracell was only good till March 2010 as seen on the label. Old batteries are dangerous to keep around, so they swapped it with a newer one. Nintendo looking out for us.
I adore that the last treasure you find before the final boss (hypnotic platter) was changed to say 19th anniversary, since pikmin 2 is 19 years old. Also flavor gate from gherkin gate was a nice name change
idk if it's that the license "expired", i think it'd be more like "if we want to rerelease this game again, we have to work out another licensing agreement" and they either couldn't work it out or didn't care to
It's not that devastating. Plus it didn't *HAVE* to be done like this, Nintendo most likely was just being greedy and didn't want to pay royalties, despite being a billion times richer than they where back then.
@@stanley8006One might say greed but they did just give literally everyone a 10% raise so idk lol. I think it was to save money but at least they're using that money for something other than dividends.
@@imselfaware419 Paying royalties? In the original release, it's the companies that paid Nintendo, they could easily allow everything again for free or even better, the original contracts should be valid for future rereleases.

Had to check with the first battery as I thought they looked familiar, the red, gold, and black design seem to slightly resemble Maxell alkaline batteries! (I believe a primarily Japanese brand battery company)
@@CartoonPhreak aaaaaah makes sense. I noticed even some of the other batteries are blue, red and silver which are also a reference to them as well. Yep, I agree. Same for us here in Singapore where we received North American NTSC Nintendo stuff as part of what would merge to become the 'Middle East and Southeast Asia' system region during the Wii U and 3DS era.
On one hand the fact that there’s a Nintendo game where you collect product placement is amazing. On the other these are less immersion breaking and now Nintendo can release Pikmin 2 without getting the rights to everything again.
was kinda hoping to see the european treasures in this video as well, but it was very informative regardless. Thank you!!! Honestly, the only problem with the replacements is that they don't have any fake brand names at all. The product name becomes the logo itself, which brings that "odd" feeling. But I can understand why they'd do it like this.
I get why they couldn’t do the original treasures because of licensing, but I feel like it kind of defeats the point of what made the treasures special. It was to show that you’re really exploring earth with real life objects.
Very minor thing I noticed, in a few specific cases they actuallt changed what the object was, like with the Healing Cask which used to be Coldsore cream, and got turned into generic Aloe Very handcream in the Switch release. This doesn’t really mean anything I just find it kinda interesting
I just wish we lived in a world were it was alright to use other companies brands in media. Everyone is either worried about being sued or being labeled as a sellout. I don't understand why product placement is so looked down upon, it makes fictional worlds feel more relatable. The only time it's not OK is when they make a namebrand product the mcguffin of the story, or spend an entire conversation praising a brand because they sponsored the movie.
It's cool to see how treasure products change and the evolution with Pikmin 2 from the GameCube to being ported to the Switch. I'm actually okay with this since I have the Wii version of the game. Glad the game still has the treasure names, even if it's silly at times lol

Now I'm curious to see if the branding treasures exclusive to European and Japanese versions changed too, not just the American ones.
AFAIK, all versions removed the specific brands
@@skc4188 EU version is like to USA
Drought ender being a coconut water brand with a palm and water makes much more sense than Dr. Pepper since olimar's species might not know how to read English/human language, but could identify the picture.
Same goes for flavor gate and the aloe balm. Having pictures explains how their species would get so close to the original meaning of the object
They own spaceships that have what I assume are quite smart AIs in them, theres a chance they can also create a universal translator.
The new battery's look just like the ones my dad would bring kid me from his work It's really impressive how they hit that early 2000s feel
the Hypnotic Platter having 19th Anniversary is a nice nod to how Pikmin 2's 19th anniversary is this year
What really tickled me was that they even added nutrient facts to items which would naturally have them irl. They really didn't have to do it, but they made all of these feel like actual items you'd find in the real world, with the tiny little details on real packages and everything. This is the best possible outcome from a Pikmin 2 re-release imo.
Now lets talk about that horrid squished font lmao
Honestly, the new brand designs are pretty fly!
Thank God the replacements actually look good.
Same weekend keep the product placement but I totally understand why and this helps the game have more longevity if for whatever reason it re-releases again
The fact they designed little peanut themed mascots for the made up peanut butter brand is adorable.
3:37 Okay that just looks like Signature Select Brand’s bottle cap. Same font and everything.
Back when Nintendo and radio shack had a partnership and you could basically only find game cube stuff there Best Buy and few other game stores
Some of these look so legit it makes me wonder if Nintendo hired professional product graphic designers
The redone items look very nice for what they did!
I Love there redesign products. Now everyone are complaining about redesign treusure.
I got a feeling that the 19th anniversary orange juice bottle cap could also be talking about how its been 19 years since PIKMIN 2 was first brought out on gamecube. April 29th 2004, 19 years and about 3 months since it was first released
I love how detailed the replacement textures are. That and they're keeping with the era the game released. Pretty rad.
Honestly sad to see all the brands disappear. The Pikmin world going full-on Great Value mode...
They did a really good job with the new textures they look right at home with really good attention to detail like nutrition facts
I wonder what brands the Japanese GameCube version had?
Nothing can beat seeing those familiar products in this charming game but I understand the change and it gives the same vibe.
All these redesigns are really, really good, but I am a little confused about the, uh, *natural water SODA CAP*
I played Pikmin 2 for the first time in 2017 shortly after my dad's passing to get my mind off of things, but when I saw the Kiwi shoe polish and the Chap Stick (Items that my dad used back in his day), I chose to put the game down. It got a little uncomfortable that the game was reminding me of my late dad.😅
Just a weird coincidence I guess.
I want to think the Duracell company are happy that there products are in Pikmin 2. Or at least they we're until the re-upload of 1 and 2
i just noticed how insanely stretched out the switch ports are. its not widescreen, just stretched. i knew someting felt off
I miss product placement in my video games.
Mom: “No, we have Drought Ender at home.”
Drought Ender at home:
I like how you're able to tell when a treasure got retextured with how much sharper it looks compared to the unchanged treasures.
@@arkadehorrorTHATS WHAT THAT WORD MEANS? I was so confused lmao
It’s crazy how Nintendo was able to get ALL of those old licenses in the first place
Thank you for making this.
idk if it's that the license "expired", i think it'd be more like "if we want to rerelease this game again, we have to work out another licensing agreement" and they either couldn't work it out or didn't care to
Dr. Pepper’s name “Drought Ender” actually sounds accurate, specially when drinking it in a hot summer day. 😂
as sad as it was to see the changed treasures, it had to be done to get this game on switch.
It's not that devastating.
Plus it didn't *HAVE* to be done like this, Nintendo most likely was just being greedy and didn't want to pay royalties, despite being a billion times richer than they where back then.
@@imselfaware419nintendo has a sociopathic amount of money, I don’t see why they wouldn’t do the brand involvement again
@@imselfaware419 no it was just that the licenses expired
@@stanley8006One might say greed but they did just give literally everyone a 10% raise so idk lol. I think it was to save money but at least they're using that money for something other than dividends.
@@imselfaware419 Paying royalties? In the original release, it's the companies that paid Nintendo, they could easily allow everything again for free or even better, the original contracts should be valid for future rereleases.
6:29 that breadbug getting messed up 😂
I wish they would’ve went for making up brand names instead of just mostly generic products descriptors. I adore stupid brand names and this was the perfect opportunity
I was just thinking that
I find it really funny how Duracells still look exactly the same as they did in the 2000s.
Had to check with the first battery as I thought they looked familiar, the red, gold, and black design seem to slightly resemble Maxell alkaline batteries! (I believe a primarily Japanese brand battery company)
Exactly. Maxell also manufactures recordable media (VHS, DVD-R, CD-R, etc) which is referred to as the Japanese brand recordable media company.
@@CartoonPhreak aaaaaah makes sense. I noticed even some of the other batteries are blue, red and silver which are also a reference to them as well. Funny that it’s still not a product placement even though they went from (I’m assuming mostly) American brands to somewhat resembling Japanese brands or just generic stuff.
@@Heath_Rubbadubdub
Yes but various films and TV shows also has product placement
Enchanted (2007) - Sony and Coca-Cola
The Flintstones (1994) - McDonald’s
The Really Loud House - Apple (used briefly)
The Magic School Bus (1994) - Microsoft Home (season 1) funding credit (PBS and Fox Kids versions)
Holly Hobbie & Friends: Christmas Wishes (2007) - Holly Hobbie & Friends (Mattel) toy commercial (1st printing) (DVD only release)
@@CartoonPhreak yes, but I just meant for pikmin.
@@Heath_Rubbadubdub I know that.
Blessed knowing I own the original
Blessed knowing I could just emulate both
Me too
@@DK19998oh look a poor person!
Man, the treasures do lose a lot of their charm but the redesigns are really solid for what they are.
I love that you displayed the Wilson logo upside down. Sort of a testament to how niche or forgotten some of these brands are nowadays
To be fair, as an European myself, most of these brands are unknown to me, safe for Duracell, Haribo and a selected few.
I never thought I’d be sad to not see product placement 😔
6:26 - That breadbug is so cute haha.
Id 100% buy the rebranded products at the store
was kinda hoping to see the european treasures in this video as well, but it was very informative regardless. Thank you!!!
Honestly, the only problem with the replacements is that they don't have any fake brand names at all. The product name becomes the logo itself, which brings that "odd" feeling. But I can understand why they'd do it like this.
Nintendo went from name brands to dollar store generic brands. 😂
Pikmin 2: cost of living crisis edition 😅
@@Snookeyboywell it is about paying off debt after all lol
I guess that people aren't the only ones living on a shoestring budget, so are companies.... 🫤
Pikmin, Brought to you by Duracell, 7-up, Dr. Pepper, ChapStick, Vlasic, RC Cola, Carmex, Dannon/Danone, TreeTop, and more
So Duracell batteries have different names in the GameCube version of the Pikmin universe. XD
P.S. Great job for the designer of the new textures. 👍🏻
Damn, how am I Conan collect my jar of skippy’s creamy peanut butter now?
Mmmmmm orange jam, pineapple slices, cream soda, tuna salad spread and premium orange juice (19th anniversary)!
Alas, there was little that can be done, the licenses were expired.
I love that they kept "Durable Energy Cell" as a treasure name.
It's cool to see how treasure products change and the evolution with Pikmin 2 from the GameCube to being ported to the Switch. I'm actually okay with this since I have the Wii version of the game. Glad the game still has the treasure names, even if it's silly at times lol
I miss the OG designs, they really helped to sell the idea of this being earth
Ah sweet brand licenses, will you never not be inconvenient?
That canned apple juice actually got me because it looked legit
10:53 found a mistake: the 9v battery labels the +/- with the same texture on both sides of the battery, resulting in the poles being mislabeled on one side of the battery
That's not a mistake. Those batteries have both poles on the same end.
I actually don’t think that’s a mistake
This guy straight up replaced Wilson with an infinitely more recognizable brand that doesn't even exist, how do I get this kind of talent?
