What does the "Manual Attack Aiming" option do? - Elden Ring
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 15 июл 2024
- Ever wondered what this menu option actually does? Well, it carried over to Elden Ring without actually working on the things it says it does, except for one weapon skill in particular. In this video, we go over this and how this manual aiming feature has worked throughout the games.

Hmmmm. So it is both in the game and functional...they just failed to implement it on anything but the big finger. I feel like someone was having a lark. Also that multiple someone's world's are gonna burn.
What’s the mod you’re using during the corrected examples? I’d love to test it myself
Just as Miyazaki intended -- it only works with a big finger. Kinda feels like he's giving ME the finger the more I learn about Elden Ring.
Hahahahahahahhahahah
Its Miyazaki's game playing you. Not you playing Miyazaki's game.
HONESTLY
The only thing guaranteed in ER is that the game will finger yore, but whole.
Couldnt have said it better myself..
That setting in Ds3 was honestly the perfect way to make available both ways the two previous DS games went about lock-on and heavy weapons, Ds2 where you were forced to aim no matter what, and Ds1 where the lock-on did the work for you.
It's a shame they didn't push it further though, being able to customize what you can and can't do with lock-on and similar mechanics would be pretty amazing.
DS2 was the first to include the option, not DS3.
@@9thAvalon In Ds2 it wasn't an option.
@@9thAvalon the option was introduced in 3, but the mechanic was introduced in 2 and you couldn’t turn it off.
@@theheroingreen and it's one of the reasons why i hate ds2. Jk but it makes ds2 my least favorite.
Uh no? Prefect way would be to make it work like in DS2, but allow for disabling it
*Sees vertical UGS moveset*
"My guiding moonlight!"
I thought for a moment there was an actual vertical ultra in Elden Ring and I just missed it :(
Why would vertical be preferable if strafing it would make it miss? Or is that only in terms of manual aiming?
@@michaelwerkov3438
If someone tries to dodge backwards, there's a chance they'd get roll caught: if they tried to roll behind you for a backstab, you could catch them on the second R1.
The only options they really had was to roll to the left or to the right, which made playing unlocked very rewarding.
What this video has taught me
>there's manual attack aiming but only for the finger weapon
>there's a finger weapon in the game
What the video didn’t teach me
>how to get the finger
@@diegogomez305 gelmir hero grave. At the first area with the Chariot in the tunnel, just run all the way to the end and take a left. You will have to tread through lava but at the end is a chest with the finger. The weapon is called "The Ringed Finger" if your still interested
just wade through lava for about 90 seconds
Ghiza's Wheel would be the number one weapon to gain benefit from this. The heavy attack while one-handing has a hitbox behind it before swinging the weapon, meaning you could shred enemies with it from behind and then FROM THE FRONT AS WELL!
Ghiza’s wheel definitely needs some love. In its current state it’s like Whirligig from Bloodborne but nerfed in every way. Bad scaling, slower, and you can’t buff it with grease.
Kinky
@@solomon9655 it did help me with mohgs fight lel bled his ass cuz of the ghiza wheel and then second phase i switched to the meteoric ore blade :P
Thank you! I play a lot with heavies, and i just couldn't seem to realize why it felt so much worse than ds3. We need this back for Elden ding
elden ding!
@@fstapled9204 this feels like a message I’d find ingame
After actively playing ds3 for nearly 4 years now I had no idea that setting is even a thing
I'm a Ledo main in dark souls 3, and the manual attack aiming feature is pretty fundamental to my strategy, otherwise people would just circle and backstab me everytime. I use a combination of this and my own lock on manipulation. The fact that elden ring is missing this feature makes the already fairly bad colossal weapon class even worse in pvp.
just crouch poke like every one else /s
I think the fact that Elden Ring is missing Ledo's butt smasher is even more sad
Miyazaki using the infinite powers of the universe to fuck up strength builds for two games in a row
@@jooot_6850 You need to get real creative to achieve this, wonder if it's on purpose
I really hope they fix this lmao
On a semi-unrelated note, seeing the vertical swings on the Colossal Swords made me a bit miffed that literally every weapon in that class has horizontal R1s. I would've loved for those vertical R1s to at least be applied on stuff like the Greatsword and the Ruins Greatsword because they are literally the heaviest in their class.
Ikr, it might be less effective on crowds, but it just feels better. Also I really miss the old Ultra GS rolling attack. It used to be a cool spinning sweep but now theyre all pokes that look awkward on such heavy weapons
@@friendoftheoyster3906 the pokes are also very unbalanced for pvp. For rolls they're fine, but the crouch pokes are nearly impossible to react to, and they deal a lot of damage and poise damage for their speed.
Seeing the ER Greatsword with the DS2/3 overhead chops makes me sad again that it doesn’t actually have them anymore.
i hope they add this to all the colossal stuff
This is why I loved the GS in ds3 changing the direction mid swing after the first was great for catching gank squads, always wondered why it wasn’t working in ER
BKGS was great too. the two handed R2 could be a guaranteed hit if you started looking away, catching them with the "backswing" and then turn forwards to hit them with the charged launch attack.
I'm just happy that this issue finally has eyes on it, it's pretty massive that this entire feature is all but non-functional because the sort of weapons & attacks they should be on haven't been given the proper event, nor do they have the sort of tracking window they used to. It IS funny as fuck that of all things, the meme finger is what works properly with this feature.
Dude lemme just say that the vertical ugs moveset is something I always knew I needed.
You only played ER ?
@@godefroiddebouillon7769 no, just saying that they really shoulda taken this moveset from ds3 and ds2
Don't worry, I'm sure they'll add this feature to more weapons in patch 1.06 :)
Good video as always, Amir
This comment is implying that we are in the parallel universe where 1.06 actually drops
as if we’re gonna get a patch 1.06
patch in 10??!!
@@captainwafflezs4799 why are people thinking er is never going to be patched again lmao
They're obviously dropping a patch when the dlc arrives (and it will)
@@peevan no kiddin, considering patch 1.05-2 that that made pvp even more unfun, as intended i suppose. But hey, lights in the grace menu sure makes up for 3 months without updates
A feature I didn't even know I was missing! Thanks for bringing attention to it
It's a shame I never noticed this option in Dark Souls 3, and the mechanic in Dark Souls 2. This would've made my colossal weapon gameplay a lot more fun tbh
OH COME ON THAT LOOKS SO COOL! they've gotta patch that in!
i fucking love colossal weapons and using the morgott's WA or the Cragblade's looks so cool with it
Yeah, especially Morgott's WA is satisfying to play with this on it.
I love this game but damn the more i learn the more incomplete it feels
it's always the case with Souls-series really. They have a ton of cool concepts and mechanics but unfortunately not all of them see the light of the day due to development and time constraints.
This is a very interesting discovery. Since I played a ton of DS3, I was really wondering what was up with manual aiming. Good to see that I wasn't dumb for trying to free aim/unlock during PvP.
Very upset that gugs was changed to horizontal strikes. Don’t know why they completely got rid of the vertical ugs moveset but oh well
Seeing it in elden ring with the vertical strikes made me sad and horny at the same time :-(
i miss bkga wakeup so much
Feel like shit, just want my BKGA back 😔
My guy I didn’t even know this was what manual aiming was! For the entirety of my ds2 playthrough way back when I was always FURIOUS when my character would turn away from the opponent, missing the attack, I never knew what it was
Dumby
Yeah, id be worried about that because after hitting attack, i am sure that SOMETIMES im instinctively aiming toward the opponent, but others im probably already holding back if it was likely to be whiffed or if im trying to run away right after... id be so confused if it wasnt aware of that and kept swinging backwards
Manual aiming in Ds2 and 3 added a new level of skill and strategy to the otherwise unga-bunga class of weapons. Also i miss the ultra Greatsword's vertical r1s from Ds3 :,)
Time for fingy build
Duuuude I've never seen an enemy go flying that much with the flick, mega sick.
It drives me nuts how many good DS2/DS3 concepts failed to make it to ER. It shouldn't be a step backwards in so many ways.
They did powerstancing dirty.
@@doctorhealsgood5456 tbh, and I don't know if it's a hot take or not, power stancing was never that great nor impressive. It had huge potential, yes, but imo the real best thing about DS2 was the fully functional left hand, which allowed for some really cool dual wielding combinations as well as the introduction of left-handed weapons. This is something I wish FS bring back and experiment with in the future.
@@kindlingking I kinda paired powerstancing with the whole fully functional offhands oops.
Man, if Elden Ring brought back backstep i-frames, animation cancelling on all weapons and spells, full use of LH weapon movesets, and holdable spells it would go a LONG WAY in improving the game both for pvp AND pve.
i can't even describe what i felt seeing that the one attack that uses that function i miss so much is not even from an ultra weapon.
wtf from.
this explains a whole lot. thanks!
Turning around with the Farron Greatsword L1 in DS3 was always really fun.
Dark Souls 3 UltraGreatsword attacks actually look good in Elden Ring. I wonder why they didn't make some Colossel weapons have those animation attacks.
Sifd meme incoming: "Did they even test this?"
I’m not sure if i’m right but since only ONE weapon you said takes advantage of the manual attack aiming, that being the furled ringed finger. Would it be safe to assume that its just a bug that plenty of weapons don’t have this feature?
It could have been unintentional to have them removed like this on release, but it would be hard to confidently call it a bug as if it has unexpected behaviour. Then again, a menu option doesn’t at all do what it says it does, so that could be considered grounds for calling it a bug.
@@Amir0 tbh id say forgetting to put in a line of code counts for it being a bug, as its(most likely) not what the devs intended
Cool never knew they had this in ER or DS3. I think I still prefer free aim without lock on but still cool to know.
Yeah I was told I should turn on this in the options and I thought I was going fking insane when it wasn't working, thank you lmao
Why does this have such little views. What a high quality video.
3:02 he got yeeted
Whacky stuff, I can't imagine this was deliberate. Also explains what felt oddly off about swinging larger weapons around in ER.
common amir W
Every time I learn something about Elden Ring, I'm somehow even more disappointed
I rlly wish they brought back the manual aiming for big heavy weapons cuz it rlly feels lacking of weight whenever i swing a colossal sword and my character isn't slightly pulled to the direction swong
How many things are worse than in previous games?
Thanks for the explanation, didn't even notice this was an option after hundreds of hours, guess I didn't pay enough attention in the options menu. At least I didn't miss anything since it doesn't work though, lol
yep, that's the first thing that bugged me when I first started to play heavy axes in ER. Being a Yhorm's main (haha hitbox go brrrrrr), manual attack aiming was basically my lifeline, especially to land the rare but sweet fully charged heavies. Now heavy axes are just borderline useless in pvp.... Thank you for putting light on this issue !
I never knew about that in ds3... that would have been useful
Men seeing it on thundercloud form looks good beeing able to turn thundercloud without unlocking and then locking would be so much better
Yeah bet they are working on these issues rn along with helmet-swap glitch.
Changing 2 codes is hard.
I mean... changing two codes for like 140 weapons most of which have idiosyncracies kind of is not easy
Morgott Ash looking NICE
Greatswords felt so good to use in DS2 damn.
I've always wondered why it didn't seem to work
nice thumbnail you got there
Ah yes, working as intended (once modded). Good stuff, as usual.
I honestly had no idea this ever existed, I only lock on when I'm executing an attack.
In the duelling scene, you can tell when someone is locked onto you by how they strafe, and gauge how skilled they _aren't_ by if they maintain a constant lock. You can predict how wide of an angle a player can actually swing by testing each weapon class (and the more common weapon arts) against a stationary enemy like a land squirt. If you leave Mimic Tear alive in NG+, you can even practice getting into an opponent's blind spot for a backstab (this is harder to train on with real people, because magic).
There’s a lot of reasons why a real players are more difficult to test certain interactions on, because they’re people and therefor far less predictable. The best by far tho is testing the interactions with a test partner, as there are some differences in how mimic tear moves and zero latency with them so it may not be representative of the interaction in most duels.
In terms of gauging someone’s skill based on how long they are locked on or off, I think it’s a bit more complex. The most skilled players usually stay locked on unless there would be any utility in unlocking, such as executing some precise spacing before and during your attack, or trying to have your back face away from your opponent while walking to keep your hurt boxes further from them, to make it easier to reaction roll. So you can gauge the skill of a player from how advanced and effective their uses of unlocking are.
2:30 With some editing the BKGS combo can be revived.
THIS WOULD BE SO GOOD! THIS WAS IN DS3??????
id like it if you could manually aim bows when they are locked on to have things like enchanted shot go around corners
I beleive there is another actually, the cursed blood slice of morgotts cursed sword let's you flip in any direction before the actual attack happens while your in the startup
2:12 I KNEW THAT WAS THE BLACK KNIGHT GREAT AXE HEAVY ATTACK
Morgott's cursed sword would be wild with this 😮😮😮😮
Wow ... This explains why I feel like I can never lock on in Elden Ring
Can't believe I didn't notice this - guess I wasn't looking at my own character !
Edit: oh my God the modded footage is so clear ... My omen cleaver 🧠 lobe can't handle this
How did I not see it. Prelates charge R2 is just chunky black knight greataxe
What’s the ash of war used at 4:01?
I swear Eleonoras bloodblade dance worked like this too. I could change the direction mid attack.
I always thought the ER weapons felt lackluster, every month I discover more why. There's has never been a game in Soulsbornekiro I've liked so few movesets in the entire weapon arsenal the game has. They might have leaned too hard into the Ash system and forgot to polish more the weapons to feel good.
Another Elden Ring moment
Did you think to try light weapons? I was having an issue with my light weapon’s jump attacks being affected by the option. Curved swords and katanas
What attacks specifically? I would look at those same attacks again with or without the option on, im pretty confident they are unaffected.
This works with the iron cleaver's heavy attack too. But only because it has a unique charge attack
360 fingerflick ... incredible
i'm confused, i'm able to manualy aim the heavy attacks on weapons on the xbox series x.
Superb job From, truly great job. Elden Ring is one of the games ever
Atleast we know you love it
Seeing both the vertical moveset of UGS and the actually functional Prelate strong attack makes me feel so sad with what we ended up getting
It works for rolling attacks on all colossal weapons
This game really does have so much potential… too bad it’s gonna be another month (or longer) until the 1.06 patch. But don’t worry it’ll definitely add this and fix all the broken weapons and fix PVP! (Heavy sarcasm)
Funny I was wondering why it felt weird when I turned this setting on, it doesn’t work
Shit like this frustrates me so much, we had all these cool pvp systems and they just didn’t implement them right with their biggest game.
How do you get the finger?
Again I ask you: which of these two mechanics should I free ? Poise or manual attack aiming? -Miyazaki
I reckon when they release dlc they will implement this needed change, pvp will become so much better with it. Its why DS3 pvp is still the best imo
I can hear that greenpath music
i noticed the Hollow Knight music being used :)
can we get that mod in the meantime?
hey if anyone comes across those manual attack aiming mods for elden ring please let me know! cant find them anywhere.
Same here
When in doubt, make an option. When in a hurry, forget to make it do anything.
i agree
I just miss the Dark souls 3 ultra great sword moveset
Thundercloud form definitely used to let you change direction when in cloud form, I haven’t played in a few weeks, is that not still the case?

WHY ISN'T THIS FIXED YET?!
I never played DS3 and i only used the great sword in Elden Ring so watching this video i thought this was a feature that every weapon had!
Oh wow, I exclusively use colossal great swords in these games, and barely use lock on. I had no idea that it didn’t work that way on other weapons. I never paid attention or used other weapons long enough to notice everything doesn’t work like that
God I REALLY hope this gets fixed soon, I use(d) the absolute hell out of that mechanic lol
what mod is this? 3:04
I just never use lockon except for bows and throwables lol
Oh jeez I didn’t know it flicks people that hard
since when guts greatsword has the same animation of ds3 in elden ring? am i having a mandela effect?
He modded it in to demonstrate it in the video, just as he nodded in the Black Knight Greataxe heavy onto the Prelate’s Hammer
Just unlock during tracking. It's what we did in Dark Souls 1 all the time.
pushing me deeper into the thought that elden ring got the fallout 4 treatment
which is to say visuals and half the core mechanics got all the attention while everything else was shat out at high speed...
with the pvp the way it is and what i know of japanese developers' typical way of [or lack of] handling patching such things i simply will have to close the fromsoft game playing chapter of my life if they dont restore the servers of the older games
for those who dont know what i mean: in the older souls games you could outskill the meta while playing the game normally in pvp allowing for more fashion souls builds, cosplays, creative builds, and theme builds all through just having your fundamentals straight.
in elden ring if you try to pvp without some kind of cheese strategy you will lose almost constantly
ive committed many hours testing MANY different builds, strategies, equipment, and stat arrays to no acceptable end. in elden ring you cheese and flip the coin of who is faster at slinging that cheese out or you lose end of story.
ive even watched through "honest build" videos on youtube only to see yet again a full reliance on specific weapon running attacks and jump attacks
the "duelist's dance" that made souls game pvp so satisfying is dead
Ehhh, I don’t really think the “beautiful dance” of Souls PvP was ever really the selling point tbh. The simple idea of being able to invade another’s world to act as an enemy is the foundation of what draws people to the PvP in these games. Sure, there’s a dueling scene but it’s always been ruled by one meta or another, people abusing janky mechanics and the basic knowledge of how latency works in these games. An outsider looking in would have no idea why these people are hitting each other from five feet away and landing backstabs when it looked like they were facing each other. I do agree that Elden Ring is unbalanced but let’s not pretend that the draw to Souls PvP has ever been the honorable, beautiful duel that we envision, not even in DS2 or 3.
a side note enemies fight completely different when you dont have a lock on and its way easier to dodge attacks imo
