Casting Speed is VERY Important in Elden Ring

- Ever wondered how EXACTLY casting speed works in Elden Ring and other Souls games? Well in this video I explain just that, down to the underlying animation mechanics. I also explain what exactly benefits from casting speed vs doesn't, as people don't seem to know what does and does not, such as the misconception that Dragon Magic does not benefit from casting speed increases.

0:30 How do you measure attack startup?
3:52 Things changed a bit in the patch...
4:47 How to get max casting speed!
5:47 Does casting speed even DO anything?
8:38 Dragonfire at MAX SPEED
9:36 What about Flying Dragon Spells?
12:38 I had to talk about this spell...

Thank you I will use this for evil.
Great latest vid btw, it was genius with the elemental dmg -> health physick since that nullifies most dmg you'll likely be facing against most teams. u were like a straight up tank
Just made the 666th like.
I was gonna like but it wouldn't look evil enough with 670 likes. 😈
I'm glad someone is finally calling out the near-instant shockwave, let alone taking the time to go through the specifics of casting speed. Thank you for your contributions for magic!
That thing is essentially Foce+Dragon's breath - a strong enough Faith build can use that to nearly one shot if built and done correctly
I enjoy it :)
@@seekerhunts I did that in one of my pvp builds, optimized my build for lvl 60 then stakced everything to damage, killed about 19/20 players in one hit, only those who had invested everything in Vigor survived with a sliver of HP. After a while I respec'd out of it because it just became boring, literally press 1 button to win a duel.
If it misses though you're screwed big.
That near instant shockwave has been a core part of my build for weeks now 🤣
I love that tactic of throwing out the explosion spell to protect your cast of dragon breath
Thought the same thing, extremely cool
Yes! They don't have any idea how the spell works so they just give you free space when you cast it anyway, I'm not sure how well it would work against an experienced player tho as the cast animation may be punishable.
Whats the name of the spell? I really liked the idea
@@Pedro132333 roiling magma
You can also use the black flame circle...forget the name but it puts a ring of fire around you so you can cast freely
The Blast on Placidusax’s Ruin is actually fast enough to true combo out of storm stomp! It’s easily my favorite combo.
lmfao thats so silly
thank you so much for this information omg..
Oh my God
why....
I wonder if it combos off Ugs pokes then…
FYI the way you avoid being backstabbed, and the reason the "from above" breath spells are superior (beyond a little more damage/status effect) is that they can be used while jumping or in the air. If you're smart about how you use them you can basically be untouchable for the entire cast (or my favorite meme strat, jump off insanely high ledge above host, activating the spell right before you hit the ground, and hope to kill them before you run out of FP)
Yeah you can float above enemy attacks or outside of their range. When I first fought rykard I didn't know there was a second phase so I tried to beat the first phase using dragon powers
By jumping off the bone piles and activating flying breath at the peak of the jump like all of his attacks would just go under me and it was sick. More control and power + the x factor of being able to float is what I think generally makes it superior
Although being able to use regular breath from horseback is pretty sick too
@@frazfrazfrazfraz issue is all it takes is a kukri is exploding bolt to ruin you
@@V2ULTRAKill yeah I'm talking pve, I don't expect it to be good in pvp except maybe in specific situations like assaulting a building they're hiding in.
The best part about this strategy is that you die either way.
When I jump in the air I can’t hold the spell, it casts once and I fall
I adore how this was set up like a scientific article. You have your introduction, your materials and methods, everything. And just like a scientific article, I skipped to what I wanted to know lmao
Nice 😂
What do you study? I'm a doctor playing Elden ring 😂🙋🏻♂️
@@GSixV ayy get that GTR bro
agreed. but i might come back to this vid..just like a scientific article lol
@@bizooty8782 of course, when I buy one going to customize it with anime/ gaming livery. You can be smart and a weeb/gamer🗿.
Thank you I’m sick of arguing with people about this.
Hopefully this will put their anecdotes to rest lol
@@Amir0 Put these foolish anecdotes to rest
I am really excited for all the great content your are going to put out. And the jokes are on point btw.
This is very good to know I use the dragon spells with almost every build, its a good trump card and some people forget about them
name checks out
Getting jumpscared by placidusax
I just find them very boring to use.
@@MAarshall Me too, i like the concept, but in practice they are pretty lame to use.
Tons of better options.
@@flashcamping I find them to easy to dodge for pvp and that’s mainly what I do so far favorite spell is adulas moonblade I literally one shot most people that have under 45 vigor I have 75 int 30 mind and 45 vigor I don’t spam it but it is my go to in dire situations and works I use ruin of stars and glacial glintstone shard and zamor ice storm as main spells
Dude, you're such a blessing. Thank you for your work!
14:34 this would be within human reaction time, but if for what ever reason there should be any sort of input delay, be it from the screen, the console, or the controller, the window of frames might close just enough in order for it to be literally unreactable
There's no visible tell that the spell has began casting until it's pretty much already being cast due to the animation blending, it's 316ms if you use some tool to tell you when something is being cast, otherwise might aswell be ~150ms. Seal casts are much more bullshit than staff casts due to this.
@@manofleipe Well Maby Because the Caster is High Level The Caster has the Skill Refined to the Point where it is Effective and not seen by most. Considering again very few can Reach the Top Tier Casts and so on.
"HEY VSauce, Amir here" All I'm thinking of when I listen to the music played.
this is excellent. I was just trying to take measurements earlier but had a hard time getting exact speed increases.
This is what I'm talking about! REAL detail, REAL facts. Thank you so much for all of this!
If you wanna test the input, have a controller ui overlay appear on top and for any button or movement the ui will light up, this will be helpful to find the time when you trigger the spell when the button is pressed since the image will light up.
This!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I've been trying to find good information about cast speed, but had no luck. I really appreciate this.
Honestly very well done. I have searched for one of these videos explaining cast time benefits but couldn’t find any going in depth.
THANK YOU! There’s a huge lack of useful info for small things like this so this is great and super helpful
Thanks for doing the research. I'm looking forward to seeing more detailed information come out for the different kinds of parries, but this was very helpful to see / plan my build around. Thanks!
Thanks for putting in the time to show us this. I don't use that much casting in game but still found it interesting
Finally, someone made a comprehensive video on this. Thanks a lot man
This is some high quality info, thank you very much. Liked the structure and clear explanation of what is going on - dunking on Placi's shockwave was just a welcomed cherry on top
My guy I love your mathematical methods it’s very satisfying. Also thank you so much for putting all this time and effort into making this data public for all of us. You deserve much more attention and I hope you get it. Thanks again tarnished.
You earned my like and follow at the "there are two" joke. Keep it going, and very informative video!
Omg thank you for this video tremendously.
The startup animation vs attack animation finally clued me into why my spells aren't getting faster
So glad I stumbled across this video. I've been trying to figure out what the complete picture was for casting speed in this game for a while now.
This is exactly what I am looking for, thank you for your hard work on this ^ ^
Cool of you to go through the specific of cast speeds. Surprised people though dragon incants weren't effected by casting speeds but I guess it's hard to really notice the benefits for most people. Very good video.
this video is the first on going this deep on mechanics of spell casting timing. thank you for this information
Thank you! Been waiting on this for ages. Never heard of you before but you get a sub for meeting needs.
Thanks man I've been looking for a video like this. This was 100% helpful
Thank you so much for this video. I can't express how confused I was on this topic.
Just got elden ring 2 days ago and I’m so glad I found your channel. Great video 👍
A lot of comparisons of casting speeds on RUclips just show quick spells so it doesn't seem worthwhile, but them boosting the super long cast dragon spells makes sense. This is great
Very informative and entertaining video. Looking forward to your next Amir.
Yes! I have been really looking forward to your videos on Elden Ring. You are one of the best content creators at explaining the technical details of these games.
Very interested I noticed a subtle difference in casting after patch. Feels smoother also. Love your content Amir❤
thx that will improve my pvp, like always great video, i want see you soon like a boss in elden ring
I have no idea how I was not subscribed. I had to of miss clicked while falling asleep to RUclips or something some time. But I’ve been waiting for you info on all the Elden ring ins and outs. I take any technical data I get outside of you and very a few other sources with a very large grain of salt.
Thanks for doing such a good job, Amir.
God Bless Amir you do important work, don't ever let anyone tell you anything different!
LETS GO!! I'm glad I found your channel I really enjoy these kind of breakdowns
This channell is underated af this video is so good! Just subbed btw good content!
lmao i love how you put on that song when you were like theres two casting animations hahahaha good stuff bro
Thank you man, lot of needed explanations here.
You just earned a sub!
Really appreciate all you do!
Very in depth, much appreciated!
Thank god I was looking everywhere for an explanation for this
Can you make an analysis on how casting speed impacts recasts? Especially spells that have a "combo" like the carrian sword spells. I've heard the effect of casting speed is drastically greater in this case but I've not seen a video going in depth.
As a dragon enjoyer I really appreciate this video! Now I will be sure to Keep Radagons equipped 😁 Earned yourself a new sub! :D
Subscribed!
Very in-depth.
👍🏾
super comfy and informative video :)
This is exactly the video i was looking for
very informative. love the vid!
10/10 video thank you for teaching me something I never knew before!
This is super informative Amir. Super thank you :*
Thank you for that mind joke where you put points into mind. Gave me a needed laugh
another excellent analysis! i cant wait for more!
What is the important information in this video, barring the extent that frame-counting was delved into? That all the casting speed buffs in the world don't change your initial cast time more than 20%? That all dragon spells (bar one) are too slow even with casting speed to be of more than niche use? That spells with a short enough casting time (next to none of which were shown here) practically, or literally do not benefit from cast speed increases?
What about successive spell casts, how much (if at all) do those benefit from cast speed? What governs "max" casting speed, and are virtual and character Dexterity values exactly equal in regards to spell cast speed increases? What spells, if any, actually do benefit the most from cast speed increases, and are other buffs (considering these take at least an off-hand weapon and talisman slot to achieve) worth more in pve/pvp than a measly 18% cast speed increase that only affects exclusively the startup animation to spells?
I'm just curious what the conclusion drawn from this information was/could be. If this is indeed, "the video to go over casting speed in the detail it deserves" I'd hope to come away with more information than how pointless combining the same two items with the seven (7) spells compared in the video appear to be.
The conclusion I drew from this video is that the accuracy of frame data down to sub-frame accuracy is extremely important, far more important than not rounding the time conversions is afterward... and that even at max spell cast speed you'd be better off with literally any other items apparently because the time they save only account for a negligibly significant amount of time when casting spells one at a time, and essentially none when chain-casting.
I mean, 3/17ths of a second is pointless when you could have 10% more damage or something actually useful...
@@Longwittyusername Thanks for letting me know I'm not crazy 😅
I'm sure there is some spell in the game with a huge windup time that benefits a ton from cast speed, but outside of Carian Greatsword/Adula's Moonblade I haven't seen any that I'm interested in, and for those you can go with just the talisman.
Thanks for this video. I understand the mechanics of the game even better now.
I didn't understand anything in this video but I love seeing people get a new game to dissect like this.
As someone planning to do a sorcery run next, this video came out at the PERFECT time! And taught me some really interesting things!
Short version? DEX is important for casters! Got it! :)
5:47 i had to rewind.... how did you expect me to pay attention bro
now THIS is a explanation
thank you for all the work!
Thank you for this. Very informative!
Excited to see the tools updated for elden ring so we can look more into these weapons. Great work Amir.
Dude you are amazing, monumental work
Finally a true analysis of casting mechanics. You are a legend for this! This channel deserves 1mil followers
Damn welcome back!
Subbed, keep up the good work and effort!
extremely helpful. thank you
Brilliant thanks for doing all this work g
I was starting to think RUclipsrs would never really find out about some of these things! Thank you good sir
Fantastically made video. Thank you so much!
It's actually kinda nuts how much misinformation is floating around for Elden Ring lol
Nice work!
Love your content!
Amazing vid. Instantly subbed.
You're a madman. I love it.
amazing content as always amir!!
Thanks really useful!
What a great Video! Super interesting 🧐
This video is so good that it caused a problem for me… now I want to know if the cast speed increase is linear up to 70 and what the animation cancel window is for every sorcery and incantation 😂
good work my man
10/10 video, subscribed!
Love it! There's MUCH MORE information here than just casting speed.
Great info!
Good work!
thank you so much for this
This is actually really helpful as I thought the 70 dex was in addition to radagon's and the glintstone staff. This was absurdly helpful
Thank you for a great video!
Awesome video! Great detail. It would be amazing if you could do a video like this for parrying :)
Amir videos on Elden Ring. Hype
Thank God, I was actually curious of this the other day and I knew I had no chance of testing it and secretly in my mind I was thinking to myself "I really hope Amir does a video about this in the next few months"
Looks like I didn't have to wait long 👍
I'm glad you're doing this, other elden ring data accounts have mentioned it in passing but generally chalk it up to a "useless change of speed"
Welcome back
Oh heck yeah Amir is back at it again
12:38 that took me by surprise LOL
Test test and test again. Doing good work man
Enjoyed the video, talk about dex with icon paired with ashes. Thanks for the prog./dev. breakdown.
The best part of the floating dragon spells do be the floating part though.
Till you get smacked
Perfect video was wojderimg about the breath attacks
Thank you for this
