I saw a comment that read something like "Bjork sings like she's never heard anybody else sing before". It's completely raw, full of emotion and with no concern for adhering to any accepted norms in music.

Given her intensive classical training as a child, it makes her ability to seemingly disengage from established norms of singing even more surprising.

I love this entire album. “Hidden Place” and “It’s Not Up to You” are two of my other favorites. I also love the entirety “Post” with some of my favorite tracks being “Army of Me,” “Hyperballad,” “Enjoy,” and “Possibly Maybe.” Both albums are masterpieces, imo.

This song can only be described as a Visceral Yearning and Longing for Love and Security. I'll elaborate, this album was inspired by her new relationship with Matthew Barney whom she was a good friend and musical collaborator. She had been single for a few years since her breakup with her son's father in the 90s(if not mistaken) Her Hesitation/Fear of trusting and giving into a new Love (with Matthew) was the catalyst for this album.
(They eventually Married and had a Daughter, they split up around 2013-ish)
Pagan Poetry is the Ode to this Fear of Love and trusting it. The entire album tells a story of Intimacy/Sexuality /and Hope . Now what sets this Vespertine as a Masterpiece (Sonically) is the use of Micro Beats. Bjork's brain is just 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯, basically she incorporated sounds of everyday Objects and wove them into the layered sound. This song incorporated Morse code exactly when she sings 'Morse Coded Signals " as well as so many lil intricate sounds.
As with all her albums, This is one of her Highest Acclaimed ones, that requires the listener to Simply press Play ▶️ & let the whole album take you Away.
Vespertine (pertaining to Night time or of the Night) is best Enjoyed with Headphones on a Cool/cold night with low lighting a drink or joint and Tissues 😭😭.
The GOOSEBUMPS you feel , with her Raw Voice saying"I LOVE HIM" is exactly what I and Many Many others have experienced, its Magical.
Lastly, As with her videos , Pagan poetry is another Visual Masterpiece that Incorporated actual footage of her and Matthew recording themselves having sex. But in an abstract artistic presentation. Look for the Uncensored Video( she bears her breasts, not in a vulgar manner. She's wearing a Dress designed by her Longtime Friend and World Class Designer, Alexander McQueen, RIP🙏

Wonderful reaction. You are correct that there is a harp (played by the great Zeena Parkins for this album and subsequent tour) many of the high bell like instruments you hear are music boxes. She had several large music boxes custom made for this album. You can see live performances from this period where the music boxes are onstage, including an amazing film of her concert at the Royal Opera House

The whole album is filled with her love for Matthew Barney.
Even in the videos (like Pagan Poetry and Hidden Place), you can feel her pleasure and happiness.
In 2015, after their separation, you can feel how much she loved him in her album "Vulnicura".
I think their shared passion for Art accentuated her love for Matthew.
Such strong passion is the volcano under the ice (like Iceland)... maybe Matthew couldn't handle it after a while.

just stumbled upon this. you said something about calm and drifting off, in a good way. thing is, i see the song as a pinnacle of passion, too wild to contain (especially if you pair it with the video, which undoubtedly you have since). that ”pagan” love that is just.... disintegrating the self, with all the good and the bad that come with it. a masterpiece (as is Verpertine). bjork slhoud be in the books as one of the great composers of C20-21. loved your reaction, cheers !

One of my favorite performances by Björk was Vespertine at the Royal Opera House.
It's 1.5 hours and honestly might be worth a reaction but I wouldn't expect anyone to sit there reacting that long. Beyond the headline performer, the entire ensemble is breathtaking.

Probably my favourite song from Bjork. The way it sounds just takes me to a whole different place. Compared to the rest of the songs on the album (which are more mellow, cozier even), Pagan Poetry is like a release, punchier, colder. Vespertine is a wintry album, this song especially.
If you decide to give this album a listen, make sure to include the Japanese bonus track, "Generous Palmstroke".

    On the surface, simplicity.
(But) In the deepest pit in me,
    It's pagan poetry
In context of Björk being Icelandic, pagan poetry most likely refers to norse poetry, written by norse pagans and using the pagan norse pantheon and myths as a source of alliterative words to compose verse in a complex meter that uses syllibles and alliteration rather than rhymes
