    She produced by her self almost the 80%/85% of this récord. She is a great producer. Colected all the sound to make the microbeats what we are hearing here. She is like a craftswoman making a blanket of sound

      @@adelenicholson1in the mini documentary she said she had all the sounds recorded, but she sent it off to a microbeat producer to finish it off, that why some songs have samples (even if theyre from obscure artists)

    The fact that this album is over 20 yrs old and still sounds fresh and immaculate, shows why Björk is genius. Easily in my top 10 albums of all time.

  • @stephenmccallion5886

    Most of the beats you hear throughout the album were field recordings of noises around her house and her environment. From things like snow/ice to a deck of cards. They where sliced, edited down and programmed to create rhythms of microbeats. Most of the album was produced by her at home on her laptop.
    I think it’s a great album especially on a technical level. Given this was released in 2001, it’s timeless and there’s nothing like it even today.

      I thought Matmos produced (majority of) them? or are they the one who prepared all the chopped beats? 🤔

      @stephenmccallion5886 2 года назад +45

      @@shiningnightmare5616 Yeah that was incorrectly stated by the media. Björk spent 3 years doing most of it and brought Matmos on at the latter end.
      Seems to happen a lot when it comes to female artists producing their work, which is a shame. I know M.I.A is going through something similar with her new album.

    Pagan Poetry is her sharing that she's emanating love for her beloved. How she aligns crooked fingers and swirling fingerprints with soundwaves and a repeating prayer is absolutely brilliant.

  • @anthonmessing3353
    @anthonmessing3353 2 года назад +68

    Björk produced most of this album, and later ones by herself. The other producers merely added small bits to the finished songs. She’s been studying and making music since her childhood and has been an influence for a lot of artists since the 90’s.

    Pagan Poetry is about being so in love with someone that it hurts. This entire album is about her being in love with her new partner, Matthew Barney. So now you should react to another one of her bests, Vulnicura, which is about the breakdown of their relationship after 13 years. It's absolutely heart-wrenching.

    got recommended this listening to bjork lmao. dude congrats on discovering this album! she is my favorite artist by a long shot. seriously unlike anything else, and this album is her best. she really doesn't have a bad album. i would love to hear your thoughts on her next album after vespertine, medulla. medulla is a boss battle of an album lmao. great video!
    edit: i want to add that bjork moved to london in the early 90s to pursue her solo career after her previous band, the sugarcubes, split up. in her new podcast, sonic symbolism, she talks about going to acid house parties and meeting brian eno in a sauna. its possible that she interacted with or met boards of canada during that time, but my point is she started her solo career in electronic music in the epicenter of the second summer of love, and that's why her music is so good. bjork's musical career is extremely interesting and definitely worth looking into!

    I've slowly been going through Björk's discography and I got stuck on Vespertine. I've been living with it for a good couple years now and it definitely reads to me as someone (our narrator, Björk, whoever) entering a new relationship and struggling to balance the individual and communal aspects of that. How do you share yourself with someone else? How much is too much? Do you even want to do that? Will you still be the same person if you do? Intimacy is often the blurring and dissolution of boundaries, both with oneself and others, and I think this album talks about and illustrates that beautifully.
    I saw a comment on a RUclips video about Unison where someone said that it sounds like she's talking to herself - the part of her who wants her freedom, and the part of her that wants domesticity (or to be "tamed," as The Little Prince puts it). I think the song can read as that and as the more straightforward sex-relationship song, and in general Vespertine is just a tangle of contradictions and genuine feelings that I'm in awe Björk was able to articulate all of this, and how it seems like no one has really done the same since then. One of my favorite albums for sure.

    As a General recommendation, one of my favorite artists is a group called Goldfrapp. The album Tales of Us is incredible. I love all their work and each album is different. Also the band I listen to the most right now is a group called Men I Trust. Their album Oncle Jazz is a 70 minute long journey of just incredible bass work, jazzy sounding, mid-tempo greatness.

    • @sophiapangloss2149

      Goldfrapp are the biggest 'lost band' of the early century, they should have been so much bigger, they were dynamite for a few years, Strict Machine, oooh... and Utopia still transports me, every time. I love Tales Of Us, but it's a bleak sound, and I was in a bleak place when it came out and I listened to it on repeat, it's still heart-achingly beautiful, but I deal with it carefully now...

I don't know if you've seen the video but if you have I'm sure you'll understand (wink emoji here). I think most of the album is like that, dark undercurrents vaguely obscured by shimmering golden melodies and Alison's whispered voice just that bit too close in your ear... (wicked grin emoji here)

    This album's inspiration was a result of her new relationship after her divorce/separation from her son's father. She started ... better yet, was hesitant to give into the new relationship with Matthew Barney , they had been friends and music collaborators for years, check out Homogenic. They had 2 daughters, if not mistaken and ultimately divorced in early to mid 2010s (which led to Vulnicura, her heartbreak album) The video of Pagan Poetry is from footage of them recording themselves being intimate.
    Production-Wise, this project She implemented the use of Micro-beats ( recording everyday sounds from all facets of life) Walking in snow, Shuffling a deck of cards, using Morse Code during the actual verse 🤯 creating a unique distortion of electronica, static interference and Soft Endearing bells/ chimes/music box vibes that truly do add sparkle ✨
    I personally Love all Her Projects for different reasons. The album after this is 2003-04 Medulla (an all Acapella, unique vocals Album) . A song on that album , Oceania, was a song she and her writing partner came up with after she was personally asked by the Olympics Committee to create and sing at the Opening Ceremony for the 2004 Summer Games in Athens.

      I've already listened to it! I really liked it. I haven't heard lemonade though so I might react to that.
