Début was her first official solo album, so it does relate to the idea of « Debut. » Also, Björk is a visual artist as well as a musical one. Her videos take her songs into another realm imo
Anchor Song sweetie i am so sorry…… im glad you enjoyed the album overall!! ^_^ thank you for reacting to Debut!! Personally i dont find myself going back to it as much as I do other bjork albums, but your reaction just reminded me of how good it still is!! Im very excited to see your reaction to Post next! :)
Definitely recommend going in chronological order. She really evolves from Debut to Post to Homogenic and eventually goes off into some really strange directions.
not sure you realized this album is from 1993 , one of the first to fuse such different styles in pop "mainstream" . Of course this was during the heydays of house music and modern nightclubbing when chart music really started opening up to more etnic-folk genres and mixing it up , and this "Debut" ( indeed björk's first solo album ) was one of its best platforms , very influencial , but very unique at the same time . Nonetheless always like your approach to listening and your authenticity _/\_
I love this album, it instantly takes me back to the 90's. I know fans prefer her later work but this album will always be special to me because of its place in my life. Check out the fluke mini mix of Big Time Sensuality purely because it elevates the album track and takes it to the club. The album has a lot of club beats because it was primarily co-produced by Nelle Hooper. Also check out the Madonna track Bedtime Story written by Bjork, Nelle and Marius De Vries. Marius goes on to play a big part in the Ray of Light album along with William Orbit. The album was produced by Madonna, William Orbit and Marius De Vries. ❤️❤️
Maybe not her best album but it's my favorite 💚 I like her vocals so much, genuine, raw singing. Also it's the "warmest" Björk album. Post is colder, and Homogenic even colder than Post. Favorite tracks : Human Behavior, Venus, Big Time Sensuality, One Day, Come to me, Aeroplane
Notes: Debut went platinum in the US and remains her highest selling album there. Play Dead was intended for Debut and eventually included on the deluxe version as a bonus track. I would recommend listening to it for your Post (1995) reaction. The jazzy influences on Debut (1993) make sense given her earlier Jazz album, Gling Glo (1990). Venus as a Boy was the song that made Timbaland want to work with Bjork. The two would subsequently collaborate on her highest charting album in the US, Volta (2007). The album marked Bjork's brief return to a more accessible sound before delving back into three highly experimental albums. Madonna was inspired by the House sound of Debut. They both worked with Nellee Hooper and Marius De Vries. At the behest of Marius, Bjork would write the demo "Let's Get Unconscious" for Madonna which became Bedtime Story. The surrealist art-inspired music video cost $5M ($8.9M adjusted) and is included in MoMa's collection. Despite the overall R&B sound of Madonna's Bedtime Stories album (1994), the title track would hint at Madonna's shift to Electronica with Ray of Light (1998). Coincidentally, that album was released a year after Bjork's magnum opus, Homogenic (1997). Both albums are considered essential to the genre's development and mainstream appeal.
Listen to her live performance of Anchor Song on Later with Jools Holland. Fantastic rendition with flutes instead of sax - plus, she sings the second half in Icelandic, which makes it all the more heartbreaking for me. One of her best performances in my honest and humble opinion.
Since you liked "Come To Me", I highly recommend the version that's on the "Vulnicura Live" album. It's played with live orchestra and it puts a huge emphasis on the strings.
Björk is unlike any other musician in history, with a prefect ear for combining contrasting sound element's together that interweave a unique texture. I must admitt watching MTV in 93', was the first time, both hearing and watching Björk's "Human Behavior" which blew me away. It's still catalogued under the genres of Art-pop, Tribal House, and Trip-Hop; but, "Human Behavior" was Björk's debut single, after leaving her former band The Sugarcubes. The completed album, Debut was a break from convention, in that she purposely mixed a variety of genres, which had not been done too such a successful degree. It's difficult to listen objectively to Björk's music from a randomized selection, so going from Vespertine to Debut is quite a jump to have to analyze; however, the Cinematic Dream-pop influence is her homage to the Cocteau Twins. She didn't want to copy them, but rather, too engage Dream-pop on her own terms. Go watch her video for "Human Behavior" and you'll notice a tomboyish girl in a frumpy oversized sweater, being chased through the forest by a gigantic teddy-bear 🐻 with Alice In Wonderland echoed features and her trademark finger-twittering. The song itself is about a multitiered theme, between observing humanity from an animal's perspective, while holding onto an introspective analysis of her childhood antisocial behavior - Preferring to be outside and singing among her animal-friends over people. I see all of Björk's albums' as plain jewelry boxes, filled with ornately multifaceted rings, necklaces, and broaches. It's taken decades for her evolution to be understood from a Psychological perspective - Since, I'm a practicing Psychiatrist. She's not weird, just for weirdness sake and I've heard all the trite remarks about drug-use; however, she's never used anything to enhance her creative abilities. She's a music anomaly. Björk's movie "Dancer in The Dark" from 2000 is truly all her vision, showcasing her ability as an actress, singer, songwriter, and producer. Please watch the movie, because it's a peak into her mind and how she turns everything and anything into music. As always Dave, your music selections are definitely excellent..... !!!!
Yes chronological is a great idea so your brain can progressively explode. Personally I’d try not to even think of vespertine when listening because all bjork albums pop off on their own 🎉
so happy about this 🖤 like someone said before, chronological order is the best choice because of the experimental and different sounds. Waiting for post and Homogenic ☺️
I like this album a lot, but I agree that Vespertine is stronger. This was her first album, so it was most people's introduction to her music and we knew her as a house/pop artist. Even the later Sugarcubes stuff was dance-y. She had discovered rave music while singing with the Sugarcubes and it spoke to her more than the punk/rock style of the band did. Post and Homogenic are my favorites. Curious to see how you feel about Post, which also has dance songs but I'm certain you'll like it better. Also, the "Big Time Sensuality" video uses a different mix, which has become known as the definitive mix. You might like it better. And that video is a lot of fun. As others have said, she's very much a visual artist.
It's danc-y bc that is the era! lol, the rave days,, hence her inventing the micro beats you hear in her later albums,, that have been so influential to the music landscape, plus she is a DJ:) (I haven't listened to this album in order in many years, so nice to re-visit!!)
I recommend listening to Debut Live too. Actually, every single live album of hers is incredible and to me is part of that album's essential experience. She always twists the songs and brings in new arrangements and instruments. A must!
Debut is an alternative jazzy, House album inspired by Gling Glo (1990) and the popularity of House in the early 90s. EVERYONE was getting into House music: Madonna (Vogue, Erotica); Janet Jackson (Throb); Mariah Carey (Dreamlover); RuPaul (Supermodel); C+C Music Factory; Black Box. Note: In 1993, the release of Mariah Carey's Dreamlover (Def Club Mix) by David Morals was a game changer for the genre, pushing House music to new heights with her re-recorded vocals and his percussion breakdowns. Best Mariah Carey House remixes: Dreamlover (1993), Joy To The World (1994), Fantasy (1995), Always Be My Baby (1996), Honey (1997), My All (1998), I Still Believe (1998), Heartbreaker (1999), Cant Take That Away (2000), and It's Like That (2005). So many of Mariah's songs went to #1 in part because of those completely reworked House and Hip Hop remixes.
Also you love strings which is why I can't tell you enough to listen to Tales of US by Goldfrapp haha. I regard this record very highly, up there with Kid A for me.
the anchor song is a very poetic song, the dissonant chords are used as a tool to display the metaphor, but i get that it sounds quite stark and contrasting. (once you know the resoluting chord at the ends of the chorus you'll be more "comfortable"
17:02 bjork was actually in a jazz group before her solo stuff and they released an album. mostly in icelandic singing original (i think) jazz tunes. it’s amazing you should check it out!!
Hope you’re doing ok - look after yourself and pace yourself. Don’t worry about all of us idiots !! 😂 Stick with Bjork but do them in chronological order to hear her evolution. Her music is not an easy first listen but I truly believe she is a genius regardless of whether you love everything she does. She truly is a composer.
FUN FACT on theres more to life than this, they recorded this live version in a bar bathroom, while the unreleased instrumental played over the bar speakers! in the part where it goes all quiet, shes actually in a stall LOL
My boy you GOTTA listen to post and homogenic. I’ve listened to a good amount of her discog and all of her projects are quality. Vulnicura is amazing too!!
One cool thing about Björk is many of these songs have different versions so Come To Me has a mix made by Arca for the Vulnicura shows that turns the song into a very dramatic almost dangerous feel to it and perhaps slight obsession. Anchor Song is another song with many arrangements based on the tours and is a fan favorite, special song for her. I recommend looking into her supplementary work eventually as there are many mixes, demos, and B sides for her earlier work and live versions. I also recommend looking into her journey as an artist and the context behind each album. Not that it will change your mind on them (maybe who knows) but it gives insight into her state of mind and work process at each time. This being one where she was much more collaborative and not quite as meticulous yet. Definitely listen in order, Fossora, Utopia, and Biophilia are not easy listens all the time and you get more out of them with some investment and understanding of why she became more interested in less conventional approaches. Really does feel like she has her own BCU (Björk Cinematic Universe)
"this is very different (from vespertine)" yeah....she still had A LOT of influence from her time in the SugarCubes all over this album.....really good, though. You can hear how something like this would fit right on this album (or is at the very least a direct evolutionary step). ruclips.net/video/CiLzlaDYZP4/видео.html&ab_channel=andrew91118
so she did release albums with the Sugar Cubes when she was younger, but Debut was her first solo album which is why she called it that, and it's a great one but not her best. glad you mostly enjoyed it, she's amazing =)
Absolutely love the opening of Like Someone in Love. It feels like opening up a fairytale book, or an ode to an old 1930s romance movie. Overall I find Bjork quite difficult to fully get into. She has so many unique ideas that I appreciate, incredible vocal performances too, but going through an entire album is a bit overstimulating for me sometimes. This one might be my favourite of hers.
100% of your criticisms are "Why doesnt this sound more commercially appealing?". This kid has been fed Velveeta music for so long he cant even appreciate artistry anymore
I kind of like that you didn't like the singles from this as much as you liked the deeper cuts. As for what's next: Homogenic. It's a toss-up for me whether I say Vespertine or Homogenic is my favorite album by Bjork, Thanks for listening and sharing. Peace from SF
I started with Bjork in the same way, Debut, Vespertine, Post, Homogenic. Fell totally in love... then... she went weird... like too weird and her music became so inaccessible that I just cannot listen to it. Her latest two albums I just.... can't stand at all. The last good album she made was Vulnicura.
I enjoy some of the songs on this album. It's not my favorite album by her. More songs on this than I care for just take (and run with) the cheesiest (IMHO) parts of house music. A spotty Debut! *Sorry!*

The Fluke mix of Big Time Sensuality is often used over the original (like the music video)
Her song Play Dead was included on reissues of the album and is maybe the best one there.
Yeah I was disappointed it's missing here. I never knew the album without it. Love the song.
Definitely recommend going in chronological order. She really evolves from Debut to Post to Homogenic and eventually goes off into some really strange directions.

fun fact Björk inspired Radiohead to make the album Kid A
Björk's discography is insanely good. After Vespertine it gets really good! Medúlla, Biophilia and Vulnicura especially out all 10/10 masterpieces! :)
