When we ask ourselves the question „where does the kettlebell come from“, we usually do a simple search on the internet. In most cases, we usually find the same "origin myths":
1. In the early 1700s the word kettlebell (or Gyria) appeared in Russian dictionaries as a training tool.
2. Russian farmers used their scale weights to swing them around; eventually leading to the development of modern kettlebell training.
3. The original and most significant techniques come from Russia.
4. The kettlebell subsequently became the secret weapon of Russian wrestlers, soldiers and special units - while the West seemed to be completely oblivious of their existence.
5. The greatest number of kettlebell exercises were invented in the last 20 years.
Unfortunately, most of these notions, already established in the collective thought, do not completely align with documents, evidence and history.. and that is what we will discover in this video.

It's obvious that a huge amount of work went into putting this together. Very informative and entertaining! Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Man, you won't believe me but I had my P.E. classes in the same building where Dr. Kraewsky organized his athletic club at Saint Petersburg University. Unfortunately, the building not in its best condition now.
Gregory my brother you're a godsend for everyone who is into Kettlebells and fitness. Deeply impressed by your video and very corious about the history you showed in your video. Definetly buying the book.
Also, your channel is massively underrated.
- Much love from Vienna
One thing that this video taught me is: Old school kettlebell training can give you some sweet mustache gains!
Jokes aside, incredible work. One of your best videos so far IMO
This was a phenomenal video.
Fantastic work on this video. So interesting.
This is one of your best videos Gregory! Was trying to find a video on kettlebell history a few weeks ago and couldn't find a good one. I am sure this is the best vid on kettlebell history on RUclips right now. (90DKB student Norris here - not Warren)
What is 90DKB?
@@mike6572693 90 Days of Kettlebells. It's a course Gregory developed. I recommend it.

Lebe this is amazing work. The research and compilation of information about the kettlebell is astounding. Bravo brother. You’ve done the masters proud.
Agree, this was an excellent display of work in video format. Good job.
Keep on the Good and Qualitative Work Lebe ! This video seems extensive and comprehensive ! Shoutout from a member of Coach Mandler's Kettlebell Warrior Den ;)
Really enjoyed that.
Thanks for doing the research, a lot of work went into this video.

Glad you enjoyed it!
This is an excellent presentation, thank you.
Thanks for the feedback Joseph! - Gregory
You knocked it out of the park, brother!
Excellent video, superbly done 👍
Many thanks!
This is the most underrated fitness channel on RUclips. The recording and audio quality is unreal. The skills are second to none, a true tactician! It’s nice to see a “real” person that’s stronger and more skilled than these juiced up influencers touting 3 minute workouts “guaranteed” to make you look like a bodybuilder lol. Thank you for what you do!
Appreciate that feedback Vincenzo; thank you so much! - Gregory
Excellent content!
Appreciate it Travis! - Gregory
wonderful video. Great to learn the history of a sport that I've fallen in love with
Glad you enjoyed it!
This kettlebell ytchannel is full of passion. Gregory, how often are you dreaming of kettlebells when you sleep?
Every night brother. 💯 - Gregory
😍
His pillow is a kettlebell
The BEST content. Period 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Appreciate this!
Excellent work. 'Nuff said. 😎
awesome video!
Thanks for the visit
Gregory, thank you for the awesome video. Interesting, informative, and the production & editing are on-point. It's clear that you've put lots of efforts into it.
However, one question remains in my mind - what about all of those stories about the "girya" appearing in Russian dictionaries in the 1700s? Are they false? If they're true, than they talk about a period that predates all the names you mentioned. I wonder whether there are Russian historians that could further enlighten us on the matter.
Bro ...can you post something about how Ottomans utilized KBs to train there soldures and even there Sultans ?....I read ones that KBs were highly used and especially the Turkish get up as a sign of strength and mobility .....thanks for your efforts
Love this man
Wow! Great video! Thank you brother!
My pleasure!
Awesome video thank you o much for the effort
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fantastic, thank you
Glad you liked it!
Gregory very interesting and informative video.
Have been following your channel for several months and really enjoy your videos. Have you done a critique on Coach Vaughn or Rik Brown? I've been using kettlebells since 2002 and two years ago a friend asked me if I've ever used any mace workouts and I had not, but after looking into mace training, I bought two and they work well with kettlebells. Both men mentioned above are mace coaches and they are both kettlebell coaches. Rik Brown gives a lot of credit to Steve Cotter for his coaching after spending time with him. Coach Vaughn has a book on Amazon entitled The Kettlebell Awaits. After viewing some of their for kettlebells and mace training, I would be interested in your view of both coaches.
Excellent! Thank you 🙏

good work
Most welcome 😊
Great vid. Would have been a lot of work. Well done mate!
Hi, first of all thank you for the time and effort to compile this video. At 6:50 I am sure you meant 19th century, right?
Excellent video.
thank you for this! so interesting.
Glad you enjoyed it!
You’re a true KB scholar my friend and I am grateful for your work and dedication to something I find so dear to life, Kettlebells are more than just a training tool they are a physical and spiritual journey one that keeps getting more and more interesting IMHO
Thanks for sharing! 💪
If this is not considered, treated and respected as a definitive video guide of the history of the kettlebell (and an incredibly efficient crash course on modern weight lifting) now, I will predict it will be in the near future as humanity starts to look for efficient, cost and time effective ways to optimize their strength and physiques while separating the non-sense on youtube from extremely insightful and entertaining videos like this one. Anybody can tell a lot of thought was put into this video and execution. Great work my friend 🎉🎊🍾🙌🏼🙌🏼
Thank you for your feedback! Much appreciated! - Gregory
Amazing!
That was great...fighting the urge to do some olde tyme lifts in my living room on a Saturday night...
Thank you for this very interesting video but I enjoyed and agree with your observations on human nature
Fair play
Glad you enjoyed it
10:12 you are speaking of the bras tendu but what is the exercise called that is shown?
It looks a lot more like a mobility than a strength movement.
The Kettlebell is an absolute gift to us by the past pioneers. So grateful.
My only regret is that I could only give you one thumbs up .
This wasn’t a good video - it was a great video .
Just great!! Its an honor that you mentioned me!!
You are the one who started this brother; I have every reason to include you! Thank you! - Gregory
Got to give credit where credit is due. You guys certainly put in the time and the work!
Great, history is important.
The level of mustache EPIC
Super
Excellent work. I wonder how the Chinese Stone Lock fits into this history.
Hey Gregory, is the book in English?
The original book is in spanish, but the link that Lebe posted is in english
Louis uni (Apollon) did 79kg on bras-tendu.
A walking tank this dude was! Thanks for sharing! - Gregory
@@lebe-stark 9:44 in this photo Apollon was 47 and the kettlebell he did with bras tendu is 30kg weight, I have the original photo of this and it's written with a french language.

Damn, you're such a nerd, man... If you go on like this, you're gonna be mentioned along with those legends in future anthologies like this one 50 years from now. Fantastic work!
(P.S. The term „nerd“ is of course meant in a 100% positive way, just to avoid confusion. Nerds were, are and will always be the people that move things forward with their enthusiasm.)
Where did you find the photo of the statue of Krajewski?
Google. :)
Stone lifting was going on before any of this
More specifically stone locks. But I think that is a case of different definition.
I am cool with a lot, but attributing some secret insight and then saying science came to the same conclusion is a bit iffy. Its in the same ballpark as claiming religious texts talk about quantum science. Dont put people on a pedastol. And dont build them one. The man claimed something, and now we know more because we've had the time to research. Otherwise fun video :) it shows a cool international team efford :p
1800s = 19th century!
Interesting video! Have you checked out Jamie Lewis’s podcast episode on the history of kettlebells? He puts it at starting at around 4500 BC in Pakistan area. It is certainly a case of different definitions, but it would be interesting to have you two chat about it because he is one of the most interesting lifters alive right now.
That looks like a Chinese stone lock that Geromino has in that picture. in case you don't know about them here's a video ruclips.net/video/_29SnIBMa4A/видео.html
Yes! I've heard of Stone Locks; thanks for sharing! - Gregory
Huh? Wouldn’t the Chinese stone lock used by Chinese martial artist for over 3000 years be the origin of the kettlebell?
Damn that's Interesting
Good video. It's a shame how Germany hasn't turned that historical into anything meaningful.
Especially when the early German Eastern block sportsman were doping.
Very interesting. Strength doesn't always equal health. Facts. Pavel is still the original promoter of the kettlebells
There are no kings of kettlebells it's a stupid concept.
Like the matriarch of medicine balls.
Good video
In German eastern block, Sauerkraut is doping.
One thing i don't like in this sport is that it's associated with Russia - one of the most hated country for reason. :))
You do good job to popularize it with new approach for western world.
