So, that stealership blew out the sunroof drain tubes and performed a pad swap, then claimed to have machined the rotors(clearly not done) and serviced the trans fluid(also no evidence of this procedure) and charged the owner for these services. That is FRAUD! After Ray changed the trans fluid, there was evidence of the fluid being spilled and witness marks on the drain plug(first ones seen). The owner has a valid case for court with the video evidence that our ever vigilant Ray has provided!

I do agree with main dealers can and often do put on extras on your bill. But if you have a relatively newish car consider that it needs updates to it's on board comp and back yard mechanics dont have access to this expensive equipment. Also remember if any damage is caused by the back yard mechanics ie blowing the comp you will probably find that only the main dealer will be able complete the repairs. This is only my personal experience from a back in the day.

My friend had a Pontiac that started to "squeak" when braking. You know those little wear indicators that touch the rotor. He took it to the dealer and they "fixed" the squeak. A few days later, the brakes were growling so he went to a brake store and told them the dealer just did a brake job. The tech had him come into the garage and showed him what the dealership did for the brake job. They bent the little squeakers away from the rotors. They did a real brake job and saved the parts which he dropped on the dealer's owner's desk. A check was immediately cut.
This is the same dealership that rolled the odometer "AHEAD" to get out of my warrantee. My lawyer got them to give my money back and they bought the car back. They are now a Chevy dealer since Pontiac went away.

Three sets of tires later (and two family members switched at different outlets) and the same level of experience. Pick it up the next day and took a quick look under the hood. Sparkplugs are under a plastic cover that needs to be removed to access the plugs. Cover still covered in dust, no fingerprints, nothing. Had a little chat with the service manager and asked him how it was possible to change the plugs without touching the cover. Oh, sorry sir, we forgot to do the plug change but billed you for it anyway. They made me good finally. I was a auto mechanic in a previous life so knew what to look for. This is one of the biggest reasons I love this channel. My wife's Buick Enclave, we continued to have the dealership service it. They give you their all-points inspection documentation to show what all they 'checked.' My wife comes to me telling me the steering is sticking and getting really hard to turn on tight turns. Take it out for a test drive; and what do you know sticking.. hard to turn etc.
I take a look at the power steering fluid and oh look, it's low, like REALLY low. Topped it off, issue went away.
Now I save all those reports. I went back a year and double-checked and each one showed that it was checked and in good working order including the one we had a few months prior.
There's NO WAY they were checking it with it as low as I found it, and I found no evidence of leaking.
AS you can guess, my wife has asked that I take over general maintenance again... yay me :)

At one point our service department had twelve ASE Nissan master techs and a total of twenty four techs. Our dealer group was purchased by a large dealer company that begins with an A and is nation wide. You have to guess who I’m referring to so we all avoid unnecessary legal issues. Anyway within a year we were down to a few master techs and a whole bunch of young kids with zero experience. I am so happy to be retired and not dealing with the industry these days. I did sell lots of Nissan CVT’s at the independent shops when they hit the 100K mileage so my guess is the dealer tech was confident in selling a pattern failure repair.

In 1995, my parents bought a new Honda Accord that they, myself, my brother and sister all drove. It was a generic, 130hp sedan - it wasn't driven with any real care, but we never pushed it hard obviously. It was an outdoor-stored car (eastern Canada), and in 7years, we all put on just over 220,000 kms (~137,000 miles) on it. It had its routine maintenance on time. Not once in 7 yrs did it have a single solitary issue. It was tight, not a spec of rust, and no suspension rattle, despite being on horrible roads for at least 4 months/year. 100% reliability, 7yrs, 220k kms. That was a car built in 1994.
30 yrs later, we've gained absolutely nothing in terms of warranties or reliability. Even in EV's, where 95% of the complex, moving parts have been removed - if you want your car to have 100% warranty coverage to 140,000 miles, you're gonna have to pay ~%5k for the warranty.
    Why?
Consumers deserve far, FAR better protection. We take it up the tailpipe when it comes to the planned obsolescence of household appliances, lawn mowers - but we are taking way too much abuse from car makers. I'm sorry that American made cars haven't been reliable since the 1960's, I wish they were better, it'd be great to keep the money local - but it seems Toyota/Lexus are the only ones who prioritize reliability. Honda, Mazda, sometimes KIA, occasionally Hyundai, the odd Subaru - but not one of them with the confidence of a '95 Honda Accord. If something goes wrong with a mid-sized sedan in the first 5yrs/100,000miles of ownership, the dealership should fix it immediately, at no cost to the owner, with an apology & the offer of a loaner. Cars have been around long enough - it's time to make them right, or the car maker's shareholders should suffer huge losses when issues are discovered. EV's are relatively new, but as far as probs with them - no transmissions, no exhaust/combustion/cooling, no excuses. Make them tough or suffer the spotlight of shame. I know there are complex systems that warm/cool/maintain the battery/motors, synchronize many new technologies, etc, but we're long overdue both reliability and innovation.
CVT not working right? Replace it, Nissan, like Subaru does. Subaru covered my 2016 WRX for 10yrs/120,000 miles - for free. As they should. Nissan's reliability has plummeted in the last 15yrs. It's the worst Japanese car made in the world right now. Now people get ripped off by those fixing them? No. No more. Nissan, fix it. Apologize. Give it back working.

Amen brother! These are great points! Cars should be better now than they were in 1995, but somehow this happened, same as with appliances from the same era, tough, easy to repair with youtube, long lasting, cheap parts...now it's all cheap and using "tech" that breaks and cost too much to repair...sad...

    • @NunchucksHabit
      @NunchucksHabit 22 дня назад +1

@@theadvocate4698 Yep. I've got a one bedroom apartment in the city, and it came with this dishwasher that HAS to be 30yrs old. It maybe cost $300 new. I've had it for 11yrs & I can't break it. Cleans really well. I'm not one to clean the plates off before putting them in.
My parents bought a fridge, dishwasher, washer & dryer new when they built their house in 1986. They lasted until 3 yrs ago. That's not just reliability, that's pedigree. They got really nice new appliances, and the fridge died after 2yrs - its warranty was 1 year. WHO PUTS A 1 YEAR WARRANTY ON A FRIDGE? Washer had a prob as well. Dryer still going after 3yrs, but it takes 3 times as long to dry everything.
Consumers have been enduring this planned obsolescence nonsense like battered spouses in the 50s. Companies are beholden to their shareholders, not the customer. That's why they have such huge surcharges & fees after the pandemic - they decided they're recoup the losses, despite claiming the capital losses - instead of simply having a bad year like the rest of us. Just once - a large company telling its shareholders, "we had a bad year, it's not the customers' fault - we're not gouging them to meet the expected margins, we're gonna slowly climb out of it".
A local dairy company paid their workers 100% of their wages & benefits while Covid ravaged the world. They didn't have to, but they were doing really well the previous year, so they looked after their own. Their prices didn't go up either. They actually angered the grocery chain by telling them they were upcharging for their products "due to Covid" (greed). I buy their brand exclusively.
There's no reason the average EV can't get 300,000 miles without serious issues other than battery replacement, except for the fact they want to sell you a new one every 4yrs.

Then bring the truck back for another transmission service and we will check again if there is more metal or not.

As someone who works at an auto parts supplier in Canada with a fleet of Nissan Versa Note's I am very familiar with the Nissan CVT transmission. We are an extreme use case as our fleet of 80 vehicles is constantly in use, and our climate is very extreme. We have had to replace 6 CVT transmission total due to various failures usually around 175,000 miles (280,000 kilometers). One of our stores had one of their cars at their local Nissan "stealership" for warranty recall work, the store manager had requested that they do a transmission flush and they refused to do the work. We have a strict service schedule and flush them at least every 50,000 miles (80,000 kilometers). They wanted us to replace the transmission. We drove the car 100 miles (160 kilometers) back to our main warehouse and sent the car to the small local shop that we deal with to look over the car. They performed the service on the car, which included replacing the internal filter that no one except for this shop is aware that is installed in these CVT's. The biggest issue that we came across with that car was that the transmission cooler in the radiator was plugged up to the point that we had to replace the radiator and a few other items, but the CVT is still functioning perfectly. That situation has resulted in us looking at bringing all of the cars to this independent shop just to make sure that the transmissions are serviced properly.
TLDR: We have a fleet and Nissan tried to replace the transmission when it wasn't needed. The car had a plugged cooler that was causing the intermittent transmission issue.
My service recommendation for every CVT owner needs to get the transmission flushed every 80,000 miles (130,000 kilometers), and Nissan customers should find a shop that will replace the internal filter.

This is why I do not like taking a car to a dealership for work. My daughter mistakenly took her car to a Nissan dealership for an inspection. They failed it and wrote up a large laundry list of items that needed repair. The quote was more than twice the value of the car. Then they tried to sell her a new car. They even said that it could not be driven and needed to be towed. They said the rear wheels were locked up. The tow was covered by our insurance so that was not an issue. When I heard this I called BS and could see myself that it did not need all that work. The rear wheels were not locked up when it arrived back home. I took it to my regular mechanic and he was able to fix it up for a fraction of what was quoted. We were not happy with this dealership.
A trusted independent mechanic is someone who should be valued for their time, knowledge and honesty. Good work Ray.

Dodge Dealership story: after me doing a brake job on my wife's car, brakes were very spongy. Days later, it was suggested the brake fluid be changed. I had the Dealership do it. $200CAD. Brakes were 'ok' after that, but still not the best IMHO. A year later, rear brake line burst. Took it to the same Dealership for repair. They said the brake fluid was black and needed to be changed. I went to look. It was BLACK! I asked if that could happen within 15 months of being changed. The Tech and Service Mgr said no way. I asked Mgr to check the service records for Jan. 2022. He said, "Hmm. We changed that fluid." I said it looks like the job was never done. They did a "complimentary" brake fluid change after repairing the ruptured brake line. Stealerships are just what they're called.

Back in the late 90s, I took my ' 87 Nissan Maxima to AAMCO. because the linkage and 1st gear were giving me problems. They took the transmission apart, assessed the damaged and tried to sell me a rebuilt transmission. I was skeptical that they had actually removed the transmission for the price of their diagnostic service, but they took me into the shop and showed me my car and the transmission.
It was quite pricey for the transmission, but not so much for the diagnostic service. For whatever reason, I felt compelled to get a second opinion, so I instructed them to put it back together. I think they were unprepared for that, but did as I instructed, with the caveat that my car may be underivable from their shop. Not only was the Maxima drivable, but I never had any transmission problems from that point forward. That was a great lesson about second opinions, although I never did take the car to another shop.

On the Jatco transmission you need to change the oil fluid at 35k miles the first time, and every 25k after that. There is a cooler cartridge filter and a pan filter. Never use anything other than Nissan NS3 oil. ( older ones NS2)After market oil may ruin your CVT. Never use it. The CVT OIL in the video is screaming for a fluid and filter change. I service these transmissions on a regular basis. I have seen all the ends and outs of what you can do wrong. Main killer is not changing the fluid regularly, or not using genuine Nissan CVT fluid and filters. A lot of times the Nissan shops, Don’t change the cooler filter which leads to fluid blockage and death of your transmission. ( you absolutely have to change the cooler filter Ray! ) there is no silicone on the gasket. It is a regular black rubber gasket. You refill that tranny with 5 qts fluid and run it to 210f than pull the overflow bolt until it truckles out and reinstall to get it to the correct fill level. Some of the other types have a tube on the drain bolt that gives you the level. Note its not able to drain on those type. You have to pull the pan to get to the fluid on those. Mainly those are on the Nissan Versa.

Happened to a customer of ours once. Garage in the North East of Scotland, newish Nissan Qashqai came in with timing chain rattle. Customer stated that the car "Just got fully serviced at the dealer to maintain the warranty" but the engine oil came out black as tar when we had a look. We bottled it up and gave it to her to take to the dealer, never heard from her since. Theres something about nissan dealers...

Not just Nissan....I bought a used Lexus Hybrid....asked the dealer for a trans fluid change....oh, its a sealed unit....posted that on a Lexus forum....someone sent me a PDF of the trans....oh, look....a drain and fill plug!!! They are all lying bastards and intentionally lying to your customer about what is likely the second most expensive purchase they will ever make should be a criminal act punishable by law.....

Actually, no, I have found out that the BBB is basically worthless. Companies good and bad will pay the fees to joining the BBB and if a company gets bad reviews, the 'bad' company will 'pay off' the BBB to get the bad reviews off the the BBB's website. - File a complaint with the Consumer Affairs Department with the Florida Attorney-General's office. It has more 'teeth' than the BBB. And file a complaint with the Dealership Regional Manager. Higher up than the Dealership's General Manager. That will get the ball rolling on possibly 'cleaning house' in the Dealerships Repair Department.

BBB is it just as corrupt as the stealerships. BBB often takes bribes to give good reviews/awards.

Por lo pronto, no creo que "giren" rotores, ya que prefieren vender nuevos y OEM para cubrirse de cualquier problema o riesgo de reclamo.

Ray is 100% right about the rotors not being turned. I was a Nissan auto technician(fancy name for mechanic) for 15 years at a dealership. I used a lathe that turned rotors on the vehicle so you don't have to pull rotors to turn them.

Often done with rotary cutting pads back in the day as well BUT any way that it is done there is no inner or outer ridge and the surfaces are obviously refinished even to a casual lookover in the next several thousand miles.

Most shops , including Nissan Dealers, will use the " Pro- Cut " On Car Brake Lathe. That machine requires you toremove the brake caliper brackets to accomodate the the cutting part of the machine . Clearly it shows that the caliper brackets were not removed.

New Zealand, we change (as told by most markers) CVT trans need to be flushed/changed EVERY 50k kms (changed oil).
NZ roads are so hard on CVT's, we have way too many hard hills and rougher roads.
