Gordon Lightfoot also loved this tune. When John was performing it at “The House Of Strombo” in Toronto, Gord was in the audience singing along. That’s some high praise!
    RIP John
    RIP Gord

God, been listening now for two days, taking me back fifty years, I'm so sad he's gone. He was so much a part of my life. We used to sing his songs on our guitars. Soooo many years of John. God bless him. He's drinking a cocktail now, smoking a cigarette nine miles long, and kissing a pretty girl on the tilt a whirl.

Night of April 7th 2020 was full moon. I walked on the balcony and looked East and gazed at the moon through the top branches of a tree barely blocking my view. I went back in and grabbed my camera and started shooting. I ended up with some awesome pictures of the full moon that night. Couple of hours later as I laid in bed I found out John passed away. I listened to a lot of blues until then and an occasional Prine. I have not been able to listen to anything else but JP since that night. I have discovered a lot more of his music since then. I will never be the same. He made me a better person!

Found John in '75 in Colorado and have been admiring his art ever since. He touches you deep in your essential self and reverberates in your heart and soul. His empathy and kindness draw you in.

I think this is my favorite John Prine song because I lived it...You know like they say..."Been there...done that...bought the Tee Shirt...Sold it at a yard sale...Bought it back at the Goodwill Store"...This song brings back many memories...And tears...Like reading old love letters...Had a wife that worked at a Bar B Que joint in SC...Need I say more?

On a recent interview, he said this was his favorite song because it conveyed his meaning in the song so well

  • @paulhare662

The original version struck me in high school when a youthful romance went away. The instrumentation of this version seems to capture the sadness better and has me remembering those days. Jackson Browne's Late For The Sky got played a bit back then too.

This album was released after he had surgery that affected his voice. The gravely voice adds to the wisdom of his songs.

Saw JP in Louisville in the early 80’s in a converted movie theater that was part of a disco bar. It’s a little bit funny that that’s was the venue but what a performance. Just love his songs and how the lyrics piece through me like a surgeons scalpel.

I like this version too, and I dn't mind his more ravaged voice, but i find some of these reinterpretations more... what, self-conscious? The originals, he just laid em right out there... but now he seems to be paying attention to what he's doing.

I just found this version. I dislike the pick a favorite debate. I'm just glad Edison figured out how to record music and you tube has this tremendous library. Deciding what version I like better is like picking a favorite Mary Chapin Carpenter song. Simply depends on my mood at the time. I do like the strings in this one.

The guy got cancer and wrecked his vocal chords! But as a matter of taste, I love these gritty late versions.

This is also Robert Plant's fave song of John's. I love this too, in either version, this one is rougher, jeez, this man went thru illness hell and kept on going! Bravo. and too bad the stupid virus took him. God blessed John the day he was born, never be another like him. Suffer no more, Mr Prine, just chillin w/ the Lord, Steve, and my dead ol man in heaven.

@@roxannetoth5026 Souvenirs is my favorite Album. I love the acoustics and since I was introduced to him on later albums, and I think the gritty voice completes a lot of these songs.

I agree. The original version is one of my favorite songs. Likewise the original version of souvenirs.
