most valuable painting channel for me. i’m constantly rummaging through the different videos as all have specific and well explained concepts.
Most definitely. Every time I see someone on Reddit ask anything about airbrushing I recommend Marco's videos. Ive seen so many others, but none of them really helped. I started using mixing cups to thin my paints and a little drying retarder. I havent had a clog since
Favorite painting videos for me and it's not even close.
Facts my dude! Every video so far has been gold
@@lucasthomas9184 same, and also when ever any one asks about using oils (though for the life of me I can't get the hang of highlighting with oils, I've found oil washes pretty awesome). Marco's airbrushing advise has also helped me reduce clogs (I still get the occasional one, but far fewer than when i started out with in a few months ago)
Drop a like to jumpstart the video in the algorithm and leave your questions in the live chat or here in the comments! See you at the premiere!!!
can i just make you my warlock patron to gain art skills? no?... was worth a try. have a nice day regardless :)
@@marezthethorn don't discard the possibility of a dark pact so quickly... 😜
@@MarcoFrisoniNJM I would sacrifice my entire backlog for your techniques but you would just burn through it in 4 day (it is just AoS Soul Wars, 40k Dark Imperium, Start Collecting: Dark Eldar and Light of Eltharion). So I won't even try :D
But seriously: Since I don't have an airbrush and since I won't get it soon (I paint in the same room as my wife spends her time and I don't want to poison her with the paint particles) I am very curious about this video!
This going to be a vid about lots of dry brushing and/or glazing techniques?
@@j453 no dry brushing and no classic glazing ;)
Can you please show us how to paint makeup on busts/miniatures?! Thank you Marco for another great video!
Incredible. You've essentially done a full yellow ochre underpainting. Even at 6 minutes in, it looks amazing.
This is the best use of contrast paints I've seen so far
I just love how conscious and purposeful you are with every technique. You are a truly inspiring artist and I admire your work! Thank you for sharing.
Not just another awesome video, but a new way to prep...Thank you sir!
Thank you for sharing. I retract my previous Posting about not using an airbrush :)
Wow. My mind is blown.
Literally the only critique I have is that I feel like a really bright color on the goblin's eye would make the face read better. The style you went with here is really awesome and retro.
Wow. This is incredible.
Best mini painter channel on Earth, hands down. Love your videos Marco! Great job on another unique story with a really cool model!
Marco MVP painter and RUclipsr. Your videos break new ground and the techniques you teach us really makes a difference.
You are a genius, just watching your videos is so inspiring as a newbie painter. Thank you for sharing your art and knowledge!
Today I learned: I've been using washes wrong my entire life. Once again an amazing video Marco!
You're the man Marco. All of your videos really just get me excited to paint. Thank you for your enthusiasm and artistic insight.
It's amazing how you have a new tecnique every video. Most mini painting channels struggle to give you new content, you keep throwing so much new stuff at me that I usually have to rewatch videos just to undestand. Thank you.
I was wondering: would oil washes work/partially work in lieu of the acrylic washes? I'm thinking the big difference is the drying times (not too high for oil wash, but still not negligible in multiple applications), but perhaps a single oil wash before or after all the acrylics (or a more displaced application) might be interesting. Or would it not work, because oil stays more in the recesses and the "controlled staining" wouldn't function?
Took a week for this to show in my feed, how dare it!
Excellent, articulate, and concise as always.
Love your work! Thank you for all the explaining on why you do what you do when your painting.
This is a really cool model and I could see it being still painted as a dwarf. It would have a more fairy tale feel to it, similar to Snow White children's books. Also gives me serious Trudvang Chronicles vibes...would love to see Marco paint an entire party and some enemies for that game!
Produces fantastic work with oils. Doesn't need them.
Produces fantastic work with an airbrush. Doesn't need it.
Produces fantastic work with a brush. Does he need _that_ either?!
We can build an official series of challenges on this theme!
@@MarcoFrisoniNJM finger paint a bust or large scale sculpt!
This video reminds me of the mini painter Juan Hidalgo. He uses a similar transparency build up. He doesn’t explain values, volume and temperature like you do though.
I drybush before and after shading. Better results. As always great video and great work.
Sadly, missed the premiere. But as always Marco kicks ass on yet another killer looking model. That green skin is just amazing, and nmm still intimidates me so this is spectacular.
The best advice I never knew I needed! Definitely going to try out these techniques!!
These are amazing techniques! Thank you for sharing : )
Funny! Those lamps in the background make you look like Doctor Octopus.
😂😂😂
Really a just ridiculously good paint job.
The knowledge you drop always strikes me as paid patreon classes. You don't just show a technique, you always get right down to the science and feeling of the techniques. Love it. Always a pleasure Marco!
I love the amount of info you pack into every video without it feeling rushed 👍
Amazing work! As usual. I must say you are a truly artist Marco, using all kind of paints and technics in different, even unknown, ways to paint incredible and beautiful miniatures. Bravo!
😊😘 Thanks a million man!
I've been painting like this for a while. These days I use vallejo washes and then go over that with Pro-acryl transparents. Now the pro-acryl transparent line has a white and black you can mix so many colours. I love how the colour of the wash really impacts the way the transparent layers look on top of it. I do also give a highlight drybrush to help give that pop through the transparent layers. Then highlight these after.
Great to see someone highlighting this kind of work!
Sweet. Will keep an eye out for that white!
Thank you for mentioning the Pro-acryl transparents! I’ve bought the Vallejo transparents on a whim, but found myself wishing I had a good transparent white and black.
Amazing work Marco, really pushing the envelope of what can be done with those contrast paints
I have been watching you for a few years now and you are still the only miniature content creator that I watch every single video of! Amazing technique and explanations as always and I love how you make everything seem so accessible when you explain and break down the different steps.
Thank you for being a great resource of fun and helpful videos and thanks to you I have definitely become a better painter!
Thanks a million to you man!!! Really from the heart
You are killing me! I bought an airbrush (not just) for zenithal highlighting and a first value sketching und you show us a method using GW washes that is even better? Did you just say that!?
Damn on you, Marco! You are awesome - still damn on you!
Hahahaha you still made a great investment 😉! The workflow with washes gives you at the same time general values and sharp details so the model looks more refined and advanced in the process but it obviously takes more time and control and you can't count on the "automatic" rendering of volumes of the spray
@@MarcoFrisoniNJM Ok, that's great. Because with two small kids at home I have no time and even less control :-D
fantastic work!
this technique/process is really great will try it on my next work :) thanks alot
God tier techniques
Been trying to find videos that explain techniques to simulate airbrush effects and once again Marco delivers. It's mindblowing how talented you are dude.
Thanks, this is a real masterclass! I can't wait to try some of these techniques!
Awesome model and paint job!
This is basically my routine with one key difference. I undershade it as you did and then I use CPs and Inks to color it. But because I am usually in a hurry and I am mostly speed painting board game minis, after the all the base coloring is done I do not highlight them as you did. Instead I lightly drybrush it again with white, just going for the highest spots and then I lightly re-apply the CPs and Inks, perhaps I bit more diluted, just to recolor those top highlights. It wont look as fantastic as yours, but it is great compromise if you want fast!
That's exactly what I was thinking. His highlighting work is top notch but I think with this technique and half the commitment in the final hightlinting you can reach a tabletop very good standard.
Every time I see one of your videos, Marco, you completely blow my mind!!! Thanks for so many things that you have taught me. I really love you
😁😁😁😘
Stumbled on this .... I'm in .. subscribed ... wonderful work and some really helpful tips.
😊 Thanks man! Welcome to the channel 😀
totally brilliant!
😊😊😊😘
Everything boils down to your astounding grasp of color and all those concepts, once you have that I bet you can achieve the same results with cheap craft paints and a ratty sponge. To the rest of us that don't have said grasp, it kinda feels like magic, even as we see it happen with explanations.
Well, that's a huge generalisation based only on your experience. There are many intermediate and advanced painters that don't consider this magic, but just a new idea to try. Plus even if you are a beginner and you can't use this now it's still a bunch of new knowledge able to enrich your understanding of painting and in the worst case scenario, something inspiring to aspire to...
@@MarcoFrisoniNJM No, no, don't misunderstand me, I wasn't saying your explanations aren't good, but that this makes me realize just how little I know, I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, and you very damn clearly do, and it shows, freaking wizardry! :)
Lol Marco you should name it "Entire model painted with Agrax earth shade and just a couple more colours" :) Ace paint job and guide as always, keep it real
Hahahahaha that would have been a great click bait title!!!
So awesome
Who's forgotten ? I've been a brush painter for 35 years, good enough to work for GW for a while even.
Love to see you painting. Its too hard for me to replicate, too advanced but i love to watch. Thank you
Don't worry, the most important part is to absorb the ideas and how and why they work, then it's only a matter of time and training your hand ;)
@@MarcoFrisoniNJM i try to :) your art is amazing. Tkx for the reply!
this is soooooooooo inspiring! Thanks a lot Marco!
So todays lesson is; I underestimated the possibilities with "transparent" paints. Very interesting and valuable video, like always.
Transparents are very fun! Way more versatile than you'd expect. Reaper has some great ones called "clears" too if you can get them. Very nice consistency like the rest of their line, and dry matte.
Yeah it's basically the idea of the "two" thin coats taken to the extreme and fused with the workflow of airbrushing techniques!
So, brilliant. My only complaint is that for the detail you are providing with this miniature, it strikes me that his axes are sort of clean. Now, maybe he came across the slain, brain opened oger/whatever and pretended he slew it. But I imagine that's a hard jump of immersion, and a bit (not insane amounts, or who knows maybe?) of splatter would go a long way to putting a final touch on this great piece.
I agree, but this is a video about clean, smooth painting and I didn't want to give the impression of hiding something under blood, splatters or weathering ;)
excellent
Going to try this tonight! Such a cool application of solid technique. You're my painting spirit animal!
In this video, as always, everything is wonderful 👍 👍 👍 An approach to work, an unusual and interesting technique, a fresh look at familiar things)))
Awesome as usual. Thanks so much for both inspiration and motivation
You are great, and such a great personality! I really love your videos, the only negative thing is that I wish there were more of them. 😄
😁😊😁😘
dude it's crazy. thank you for the lesson.
Never have i had a drive to try to do the things you do but at s slower pace
Loved this video Marco. Was really curious to see how you were going to use those washes and am pumped to try this on my Obliterators!
As both a huge fan of the Greenskull castle goblins (and goblins in general) and trying new painting techniques I am absolutely going to have to try this on one of the many goblins I am getting from this Kickstarter!
Terriblekidsstuff makes some fucking rad casts. I did their goat man statue last year and it ended up in my display case for my favorites.
Great video, thanks for sharing your wisdom with us!
thnx ..love your style ..;
thankyou again, Bro
Awesome work:D
I really liked this video! Great work, and that mini came out great!
Have you ever experimented with water brushes? The kind with a reservoir . Seems like they would be useful for blends and contrast type paints
MVP for me
Love the process, gotta give it a try :)
One day we will have hobbyist aerogels for making atmospheric effects. *Those* are less likely to play nice with brushes ;).
I especially loved (and/or was intimidated by) this one. I've been thinking about trying this kind of process.
😂😁😂 We'll end up digitally painting holograms of the minis!
Really Great!!! thanks a lot
Marco, I know this will be lost in the comments. But you are like that teacher who not only explains the subject to you but also has an innocent passion for what he teaches and is capable of transmitting his passion to you. Most painters who make videos transmit everything to you as if it were a job, you turn it into art and passion.
Man, thank you thank you thank you soooo much, really from the heart! I can't tell you how much I appreciate your comment 😊😘
Sick mathaphors! I've been thinking of trying to do some Gorechosen minis in sort of an Ian Miller style of art by doing basically what you did here up until the highlighting stage, and this convinced me to go for it.
That’s amazing! Thanks Marco! I may try this with my Scale75 Instant Colors since I prefer them and they seem more inclined to this style than the GW Contrast paints!
Oh yeah they are definitely best suited for this kind of overlapped transparencies, 99% of time without the need of extra dilution! Here I used Contrast paints just because they are more diffused and I needed a bit of extra saturation for the comic vibe
Awesome!! So now I either invest massively in contrast paints or learn how to convert my existing ones into something similar. Time to play with medium and water, I guess :o)
You could also consider a similar approach but with standard acrylics, like this one here ;) ruclips.net/video/e_HiDJ-4eqQ/видео.html
Thanks Marco
@@jenschristensen1774 Contrast are basically inks with extra medium and water (and maybe a bit of flow improver!). You just need to adjust the doses for every specific colour but the the ingredients are always the same!
@@MarcoFrisoniNJM Thanks a bunch, Marco. It will be interesting to experiment with :o)
WHEN CAN WE GET AN EPIC VIDEO OF YOU PAINTING THE DEATH KORPS OF KRIEG!!!!!!!!???????? Im about to start painting a krieg army and need your guidance on getting that ultimate nice smooth blue
nice job!
Have you Ever tried crackling paint on a mini?
Oh yeah, they create very interesting effects, especially on the large surfaces of vehicles!
Ok, this was awesome. Headcanon accepted.
I missed the premiere 😭 but the video is here forever 😁 also incredible to see GW washes finally used for proper shading 😂
Hi!!! Yeah I mostly use them for this kind of large, quick "glazes"! Obviously you can do the same with water+medium+standard paints but it's always nice to have something ready from the pot and probably every mini painter have them at home XD
@@MarcoFrisoniNJM It's invaluable to see all our simple preconceptions about paints and products and techniques thrown out the window like that, it opens the way to a real understanding instead of dogmatic recipe thinking.
No one does that better than you. Thank you Marco ❤️
I've been doing like this with inks and airbrush thinner as medium mixed in with some stippling, wetbrushing and drybrushing. Fun but slightly unpredictable outcomes for me. Probably because I never remembers what colors or in with order I used them.
Amazing! I bet Citadel didn't even think about this kind of use for their washes and contrast paints! For those of us who do not have (m)any of those though, what would you recommend?
Check this out! My painting life wasn't mush different before Contrast paints ;) ruclips.net/video/e_HiDJ-4eqQ/видео.html
Trying out this workflow which seems really interesting. I like the fact that you increase the opacity in this way and the considerations about base colours. Do you think this is doable without contrast paint, but just with diluted paint?
Outstanding rebuttal for airbrush haters, very well done. Also, I really enjoy watching your brush movement, laying down the light information, cheers for that. However ... You basically painted a dwarf green. Now i know its "supposed to be a goblin" but, I think this has to be recorded as a Grudge. So sorry,. (joking btw, awesome work)
Thank you sooo much man! Hahaha definitely a grudge for the book!
Fantastic once more! I love these series and will for sure check these techniques as well. Can we also use inks in this way? I got liquitex inks but I can't seem to get this kind of a mix out of it.
Thanks a million!!! Oh yeah inks can easily behave like Contrast or premade washes with the right balance of medium and water; it's difficult to give a precise recipe because every colour reacts a bit differently but the ingredients are always the same
And I was just looking at getting an air brush for zenithal highlighting with inks 😂 guess that will save me a pretty penny!
Will probably buy it anyway tho.. it just looks so easy and clean and perfect when you use one, I want to learn 👌
Hahaha bad timing! the first part is precisely about creating quick zenithal effects with the brush XD Anyway it's an invaluable tool to cut the working time on large projects, but I always suggest to wait until you have a good grasp of brush techniques
Would definitely recommend it :) Your airbrush will become your metal muse.
@@MarcoFrisoniNJM absolutely mind blowing 🤯 that is absolutely a trick I am going to try tomorrow! Your talent and passion is always so motivating! Thanks for all that you do for this community and keep it up!
I recommend one if only to prime indoors with. I live in a very humid area and rattlecans outside leave a nasty texture.
I really recommend you buying an airbrush. Even if you only use it for priming, it will worthy. And after a while, you couldn't live without one of them hahaha
I want to use the airbrush as a brush 😆
Maybe attaching a compressor to a sable... 😂 Jokes aside that will be the title for a future video 😉😉😉
@@MarcoFrisoniNJM Great!!,👍👍👍😄
It seems to be a great technic ! I'm definitely gonna try it for my next Blood Bowl team. Just wondering if this warm shade would also fit a turquoise lizard mini ? I like the fact that it could make the lizard warmer but I wonder if it would work on a predominantly cold color min or if I'm "forced" to go with a colder shade (blue or green) in this case.
In this case I would start with a warm tone more compatible with an evolution into saturated blue and turquoise like magenta or a warm violet!
@@MarcoFrisoniNJM Thanks a lot for the advice ! I'm definitely gonna try it with something like that. And thanks for all your great content !
quando hai deciso di dipingere in un modo, ma poi esce il video settimanale di Marco....
😂😂😂
Hi Marco, could you make a video where you paint a miniature wearing armor in a NMM (Non-Metallic Metal) Style but! with metallic colors !? I have never seen this anywhere so far and it would be interesting to see how that looks xD. Thank you :)
Excellent video! Of the limited number of products i've tried contrasts are more enjoyable than most. Have a better chance of developing my skills using them than traditional paint. Ordered some Montana aluminum primer to try on pewter hoping it will be tougher than what i've been using. Which cap would you recommend for priming a mini?
Hi Marco, the different steps with contrast paints were made waiting the preavious to be dry, or you made a sort of wet blending? Grazie!
Marco have you used the scale75 instant colors? Whatare your thoughts ? Every time I watch your videos, I can feel a run to the paint store coming I bought some scale75 fantasy paints in dropper bottles but may get some in tubes
great channel, amazing painting and brilliantly edited videos. the result is extremely impressive. what scale was the model ? & how long did this one take from start to finish?
Thanks a million man! The model is a classic heroic wargaming scale (it's more ore less like a GW Loonboss) and it took me about 10 hours to complete 😊
Please make an NMM video!
He has a couple NMM videos, usually with Infinity models. Here's a recent one: ruclips.net/video/SmOslju0XeI/видео.html
Bravo, bravissimo , su una base fredda cosa useresti ? Semplicemente lavature nere e/o blu ?
Is this process can be achieved even without contrast? Can I use acrylic super diluted color instead of constrast?
Sure, it just takes a bit more time to create the same kind of opacity Check this old video where I use a similar idea: ruclips.net/video/e_HiDJ-4eqQ/видео.html
Awesome content as always. When you airbrush do you use a ventilation system in your studio? Thanks!
Thanks man!!! No, I don't have a ventilation system; I work only on single models/small skirmish warbands with a very precise spray and in a large room with a big window next to the table! But I have a good respirator for heavy priming. It depends mostly on your set-up and how you use the airbrush, but if you feel the slightest need of a ventilation system grab one with thinking twice 😉
@@MarcoFrisoniNJM Thank you for the info, it is greatly appreciated. I was debating if I should move my airbrush set up from my garage to my studio. I do all of my priming etc there especially for terrain creation. But for mini painting it makes more sense to be in my studio. Thanks again! On another note as a traditionally trained artist, I love to see oil paints being used in miniature painting and you do a great job of explaining the reasons why they can be such a great medium for this application.
