Hi Marco, what paints were you using for the robe washes (darkish purple & yellow). If they're oils is there an equivalent acrylic type of paint that could achieve similar results? Thanks.
It wilds me that there's still residual resistance to airbrushes as a tool out there. We spend hundreds of dollars on models in this hobby, often on models that languish unpainted, but we won't spend a relatively small amount on a great tool that will let you do things only achievable by hours of painstaking brushwork.
@@Trinioutsider34 yeah it's an old thing coming from the glorification of super smooth glazed blendings of late '90 early 2000 (when we discovered glazes 😅) and the envy of old school wargamers used to spend years to paint a single army 🤣 The "you have to suffer for your hobby" it's still a thing in small pockets! But it's just a tool that's also not that easy and automatic to use!
I’m new to airbrushing, matter of fact, new to painting minis. So the terror of using airbrush is still fresh in my mind. I absolutely love airbrush now, but it took me 2 years to open the airbrush box that I purchased. I’m not usually reluctant to try new things or being intimidating, but there was something about of airbrushing made me so resistant to it. It’s still early in my journey, and I have my noobs moments and struggles but opening that box and plugging that compressors I have to say have made me really happy.
I mean, in my case it’s my living conditions. I can only devote so much time to paint during the day, which doesn’t give me a lot of time to set up take down and clean an airbrush during my breaks from work, and when I get off work I live in an apartment so a compressor is too loud to use, and the quiet ones are out of my budget range 😅
You've blown it wide open Marco! Awesome painting as usual; your English diction and pronunciation is getting much clearer from even last year. Keep on killing it dude!
There are many painters on RUclips but your visual style and workflow resonates with me. Your speedpaint jobs are now my gold standard! I would love to see more of when to use which hue of oil paint, connecting theory with practice.
Your technique is astounding. It gives relatively new miniatures a distinct Oldhammer vibe. Makes sense, as for example John Blanche's work is very much centrered around contrasts and texture more so than basic color areas.
Great video! I really appreciate how you take the time to explain the thought behind the steps in your paint schemes. It gives a lot of context that other painting tutorials don’t have and makes your content feel more enriching!
This video is in my opinion the deepest and fullest of profound meaning you have published, I have watched it several times since the premier and I must say it's the one I love the most from yours, and I think I have watched every other video at least twice, some of them tens of times. But this is the best imho.
As a huge fan of Skavens (Painting from time to time a huge army since many years), i'm SOOOOOOOOOOO JEALOUS of your talent and capacity to paint in such a wonderful quality in ONLY few hours. Even after more than 35 years of hobby and painting, i'm not able to achieve such a productivity. Awesome content as always !
For a novice like me, your understanding of contrast, colour and technique as well as the clarity in how you explain it has been phenomenal. I have created some models I never would have thought possible while having so much fun, thank you!
Usual...... Brilliant - amazing - stunning - gifted - "gets it". properly wonderful and I love how it's all explained so that we mere mortals can have a go !!
im doing Deadzone Veer-Myn (sci-fi rat men - Skaven with fancy guns) and i followed your work process for it, im satisfied with the result, espcially for a first time
Your videos got me into using oils, and it helped that they were on sale for 80% off at my Hobby Lobby. I feel like i’m almost there to getting my washes the correct consistency.
OMG! Thank you for pointing out the silliness that is 'edge highlighting'! It looks ridiculous and not the least bit realistic. I feel triggered.🤣 Always a pleasure watching these, Marco. Good stuff!
Love seeing the evolution of your process Marco! Have not seen you use oils for streaking often and like to see more diverse applications like that one.
Thanks for sharing such a wonderful work flow on such great models. The refinement of your process along with such concise description has been a tremendous help. Also your obvious enjoyment is infectious, thanks Marco :)
I would love to take some classes in this technique. Every time I see you paint this way it just feels so 'normal' and I wonder why anyone wouldn't just do things this way all the time.
😁 That's the main workshop I'm bringing around 😁! It's really a super versatile approach that can be adapted into soooo many different forms; even using it just as a mindset to approach a piece!
This is amazing as always and the results speak for themselves. I just wish us commission painters wouldn't have to paint so many "box art space marine, please" type of jobs
I love your organic style of painting - the models look unique every time. I tried something similar (but not as brave) and it makes a dirty effect I don't like. But I will try more!
I didn't see a pre-oil sealing coat in this video, but maybe you've covered this in a previous video and I don't remember or didn't see it. Are you locking the acrylics down with a coat of any particular varnish before you use the oils? It almost doesn't look like it, as the acrylic metallics seem to have their full gleam when the oils go on! What (if anything) is protecting the acrylics?
I didn't use any varnish! Acrylics don't really need any protection (white spirit and oils don't have any chemical effect on dry acrylics, so they suffer only a bit of physical stress coming from the rubbing/cleaning stage) and I want the oils to soak into the previous layer to obtain the complex colour mixing so I don't put it barriers between them. I use varnish only to obtain particular effectt, like for example using gloss varnish to obtain crisp, super precise panel lines with clean surroundings!
Wonderful video. Could you please elaborate on the utility of the Gouache paints used in the video? How are they different to other acrylic paints? Cheers
Thanks to your and some other creators, I'm about to start my first mini, an Orruk from a sigmar starter set. Your voice saying "volume", "chromatic", and "painterly" is going to constantly echo in my head as I go through the process lol
Ciao Marco! Great video, the footage in (almost) real time really helps understanding your process and the search for efficiency. I'll take the chance to leave this comment with the hope that either you or other fellow painters can help me with a small issue I'm having with odourless thinner. My usual process is do basic colour blocking with acrylics then stain the miniature with oil paints or use an oil wash to shade recesses. From time to time, it has happened that regardless of the thinning ratio the oil wash would "rip away" the acrylic layer underneath. In the beginning I thought it was me being too hasty or rough with the brush, but then I started wondering about the odourless thinner because it happens particularly with one specific bottle. It's a cheap no-brand product that I got in an arts store, if it helps. This does not happen with "Tintoretto" 100% vegetal o.t., "Maimeri" o.t. and the traditional linseed oil/white spirit mix. In your experience, have you ever had similar issues - with odourless thinners of different brands having different solving power? Could this cheap odourless thinner just be straight white spirit/odourless turpentine - hence super aggressive? I understand it is a very generic question, but sometimes the labeling of products doesn't really help and I'm trying to troubleshoot before I eff up more paintjobs :D

I'm painting realistic fantasy these days on Twitch!!! And if you check the VODs I've painted an historical bust (a Landsknecht) in the run before this one: more than 40 hours of footage!
Wow this looks so cool, def. gonna try it with my Admechs, they seems fitting for this aproach. But I have a question, is this aproach fitting for every mini? Im wondering in minis where there is no one color that prevalent if this can be done, guess it is adaptable but seting the main tones with brushes. Will try and see!
Check my very first video if you are going for Admech! It's old, but the concepts are still gold 😉 Different models and tones need variations, of course, but the general flow is pretty versatile
Hey marco…. When you were going through the steps to remove the oil wash you used cotton buds and make up sticks. We’re they both used with white spirits and for the purpose of removing the oil paint or was the makeup sticks also used to blend/feather the oils?
Hi! You got it perfectly! Год назад+1
Hello Marco, Between the first application of the oils and the use of the ear buds to remove the excess, how long should the oils be left to dry?
There's no precise rule for that and it depends on how much interaction/staining you want between the acrylic and oil layers. In this particular case, knowing how staining these brands and tones are, I clean the first model immediately after the wash on the last model of the bunch! You can see how wet the paint is on the boss before the first pass with the q-tip

Great video Marco! Like all the others ^^ I have a question :o, how many time you can let the Oil paint dry in the models for a easy cleaning? I'll followed your tricks, but i let the oil dry about 12h-16h (more or less) because i stopped painting. After that, it was really difficult to clean the oil... T.T Thank you!

how long do you let your oil washes dry typically before doing the removal step? and did the purple wash have to cure a long time before you put that yellow wash over top of it? I'm struggling with taking too much of the wash back off, and of layerd washes reactivating the under layer.
Always impressive. Do you fix the acrylic before the oil with a varnish ? and the oil before last acrylic step ? I remember you were doing it in older videos but no mention this time, so can you skip this step ?
Thanks! No, no intermediate layers/varnish! I use varnish only for specific techniques to alter the behaviour of oils (like gloss varnish for a clean, laser precise pinel lining for example) but here I want that merging of the layers
Benn enjoying the videos and will give Molotow a try as an airbrush primer. Anything you should not use on it? Been reading that some have issues with reactivation from contrast paints + inks?
Hello there Marco. This is just fantastic new perspective about miniature painting for me, thankyou so much. However i´m a complete rookie about oil paints and I have one question. Do you barnish the minis before going into the oil phase? Thanks a lot.

Hello there Marco. This is just fantastic new perspective about miniature painting for me, thankyou so much. However i´m a complete rookie about oil paints and I have one question. Do you barnish the minis before going into the oil phase? Thanks a lot.
Marco con cosa diluisci i tamiya clear?
Altro quesito dai del protettivo o li usi direttamente?
Tamiya are alcohol based so ISO is the best thinner to get a proper fluidity! I apply them directly on the model 😊
