@guigreen that's great to hear! Always happy to help!
Thank u so much man! Going to give it a try. Wish me luck!
@@Slasherx28 GOOD LUCK, SOLDiER!
I can't believe you get so few comments, your content is fantastic, nearly 48,000 people have watched this episode and yet there is only 165 comments.
@@MaZEEZaM thanks mate! I don't know! all I can do is try again and again and make better videos :)
The main "issue" with hobby painting is that most hobbyists don't get to learn true artistic concepts. They can learn the "how to", but not "why" it works. Congratulations, you've managed to teach my fist two semesters of a BFA to thousands! You rock, man! Just a great VISUAL demonstration without all of the art jargon I had to learn with it. Thank you!
good point
My job - engineering and my other main hobby - photography suffers the same. Rarely people teach why it's just how to do, so people can't develop their own concepts built on understanding.
2 semesters huh… sounds like a rip off by comparison
Literally needed to hear about 30 seconds of you talking to know I wanted to sub. Keep up the good work.
This guy out here talking about intricate colour theory meanwhile I'm trying to get a smooth base coat on my models and stop paint getting everywhere when doing small details
Get some magnifying glasses, they help a ton ;)
@@trovarion Indeed they do. They made me realize im even worse at this! :D
@@trovarion Magnification helps immensely because what we see off magnification looks so much better after painting it magnified. I love your advice on this!
@@greenmachineminis206 true!
Also smaller brushes. A lot of videos recommend brushes I could paint a house with. I use 5-0 for general work and 10-0 for details. Also stay away from caffeine.
This is the key to painting. You can literally not smooth anything, if you learn how to have proper light and shadow placements your miniature will look outstanding from a normal distance away. Thank you
I feel I can finally begin miniature painting now
*incredible failure
oh
I feel like you've been spying on me..
I've been trying to do black armour this way for my Drazhar, but I got stuck on the smoothness.
Trying again tonight, while chanting: Contrast first, smoothness second.
it's the chant of my people!
I often handicap my own painting because I am afraid of messing up a model with extreme highlights. It sounds like I'm going to have to experiment with this "contrast first" painting to develop my skills.
I cannot stress enough how big of a deal this is. Immediately after watching your video I gave a batch of minis I had previously finished just another drybrush of a warm white and they just *POP* so much more now :D
This was very informative and even though I've read and watched other material on the subject, you managed to give me new valuable information. I think the "contrast first, smoothness second" motto and its multiple meanings was very useful, especially the part about placing higher values first and then blending higher and lower was great and something I definitely need to learn.
It has revolutionized my painting so much! No need to get stuck in 100s of layers anymore!
@@trovarion I believe that and we can all definitely see the results! I'm having issues being very slow with my painting, most likely largely because of focusing too much on the smoothness and doing just what you said. Can't wait to try this out once I've built my next batch of miniatures. Thanks again for this video and all you do to help the community!
Great video, will definitely be trying out contrasting techniques on my new batch of necron troops, trying to be 'smooth' and layering like crazy takes along time on my previous attempts
It's a fab point you make on scaling down textures/lighting down to minis. I think many people miss this so much when starting mini painting, I too fell into this trap. I say this because it is a huge blocker to feeling any satisfaction from painting sometimes!
Great video, reminds me to take more time to focus on contrast in my work.
Absolutely one of the best painting channels on RUclips. As someone who is just starting miniature painting this content is gold. Tons of information and examples. Also advice on how to improve. Well done as always.
This means a lot! Thank you! I will try to keep the quality high :)
Another reason many lack contrast and other similar aspects of painting in their works is because generally if you were to paint an object in real life, like a dresser, you just paint it a single color, and the lighting provides the shadows/highlights naturally. Whereas in scaled-down minis we as artists bake in the shadows and highlights ourselves b/c the light doesn't provide the same effect at that scale. I'm glad you bring aspects of this up in your video. This is the most difficult thing for me to get people to understand and I find it holds back the most people in the hobby, especially those who haven't studied fine arts of their own accord prior.
this is a good video, but i have to disagree that this is the single biggest mistake. it might be for more advanced painters, but not for more beginner levels. i'd argue that over highlighting (edges mostly) is a more common and easily rectified mistake.
For those who discovers contrasts or certain contrast in the video there is 3 squares to show the different contrast but the one in the middle is about two contrasts (the green and red one, he starts with cold and hot then speaks about complementary, its two different types of contrast). I read in a book about 4 types of contrasts, the 4 that he speaks but show just 3 squares.
So the
-light-dark
-cold-hot
-complementary (opposite in a color wheel, if you know the primary, secondary and more like turquoise you can do it by head, red and yellow makes orange, the 3rd primary is blue, red is the complementary of yellow and blue so green, between green and blue you have turquoise, the complementary is between the complamentaries of blue and green so between orange and red so a redish orange)
The 4th is saturation, the exemple he gives before speaking of it while speaking of cold and hot with the grey and orange bust is saturation contrast, take one satured color better for small details with a unsatured color like a bluish grey, if with bluish grey you use orange for details you also have a got cold and a complementary contrast.
You can have more contrasts like metalic - non metalic, soft transition - hard transition or textures, etc
So what you're saying is paint should be shaken, not stirred? :)

Awesome video. And for free - guys throw your money at this guys patreon. Its really worth it.
Awesome presentation, I do have a technical question tough, see when I want to be very precise in my painting, I always try to barely load the very tip of my brush, but sometimes the paint dries far too fast, do you suggest mixing my acrylic paints (citadel) with medium instead of water ? because whenever I use water it dilutes it far too much and I'm basically finding myself painting water on my minis
Using more medium instead og using more water wont change a thing. You need a brush with a bigger reservoir and properly load the brush without overloading it. It needs a bit of practice. I show a lot of this in my layering and glazing video. Hope that helps.
Perfect title, made me click - sounds weird but title and lenght (often way too long, no more than 30 min) makes me not look at ur content even thi its often great

Great video. Lots of really interesting information, and well presented
I'm struggling to picture the reds for blood angels to make the armor look polished and high contrast, do you go into yellows or add white to the red?
I use neither really. i make sure i have red as a midtone and shade with black, then i add only a little highlight color - it's all about the perceived contrast. there is a more in depth tutorial on my patreon.

I paint to imitate life and thankfully the only useful part of my art degree is I can understand and implement good artistic practice for my minis. £9,900 a year for mini painting classes. (I do game art lol)
for the warm/cold contrast i'm familiar with using colder colors as shades for warm colors, but could you use warm colors to highlight cold colors? like if you have a miniature with blue cloths, could your highest highlight have a little yellow or orange?
yes, definitely! Some other example of this would be to paint gold NMM, which is typically warm colors, because of all the yellow and browns, right? you can add a little blue to your last highlight to make that highlight stand out more. Just experiment and have fun :) you can always dial it back and go over the warm highlight with a cool one if you don't like it.
@@trovarion That is genius, great video, I really liked the comparison of same gold/bronze color on shoulder pad next to dark color and white, that really shows the difference

Great tutorial excellent explanation.
Question, why are there no good zenithal tutorials out there? I personally feel like proper zenithal highlighting is the key to creating great contrast and more lifelike miniatures.
What exactly would you want to see in a "zenithal tutorial"?
@@trovarion Thanks for the reply. I wasn't referring to you specifically but rather the internet and RUclips in general.
What I'm seeing a lot are top notch artists, like yourself, using precise zenithal highlighting prior to placing down layers of paint. You're placing the highlights in tightly not scattered. I want to know how you do it (airbrush settings, distance, needle size, etc.) and what is the thought process you go through when you zenithal highlight. Also, are you spraying the highlights on or painting them on?
The only information out there right now on zenithal is the basic spray from the top then the side angle then sideways which is generic and doesn't lead to a good result.
@@arrinstoner thanks for explaining! It's actually interesting because i find zenital priming and all related aspects very overrated, other than giving beginners an idea about where to place highlights. I only use it because the miniature is better visible on camera in the early stages and I only use spraycans. So, I would really like to help and maybe create a video, but I am not sure I understand.
Arrin by the way you describe it,reads like you are looking for value sketching videos and not zenithal prime videos.trovarion explains value sketching in one of his videos.@arrin stoner
@@delboytrotter3480 YES! I didn't know that is what it is called. That is it. Thank you! To me I viewed it as an advanced form of zenithal priming. Good to finally find out what it's called. Now time to learn how to do it. Thank you so much.
"Say goodbye to the concepts of correct and right because those concepts convey the idea of perfection and give the false impression that there is one true way in miniature painting"
Nice quote
Is there a video of the blood angel paintjob at the end on your patreon ? : )
yes, there Is a video where I show how I painted the red armor and explain my approach to red!
I print small 1:3 scale objects that have letters embossed in them, sometimes. I've tried to mask the area around it with a rectangle and then put paint on it then wipe it off and hope enough paint remains in the tiny letters but I can't get rid of the smudge around it.
Does anybody please have a good method for this?

This is too much work for me. I'm not trying to be a professional toy painter. Just get my stuff painted decently to play on tabletop. I thought this would be a video on using contrast paints lol, which is the way I paint my minis and they come out looking pretty good. I add a little highlights and they're good to go.
You seem like you’ve got it sorted out, but I wish you the best for your journey!
One of the best tutorials i´ve seen. Thanks!
A video to InstaSubs... Oh wait, I was suscriber already :)
haha!
So, I'm looking at doing an army in an eldritch horror theme using desaturated blueish-green (aka go away green) with strong contrast points of magenta into fluorescent pink. Since I want to use the desaturated green to push attention to the pink, how much would you push the value contrast on the green? As of right now, I'm half considering zenithal priming in my intended green, and only focusing on the pink. How much more would you go with "character" models?
You can basically try anything here, there is no right or wrong. To me having a bit of the torquise show, but being rather dark and then basically highlighting wit magenta and pink sounds fine. How much time you should invest into your characters is up to you :) can always paint them up battleready and the gradually invest more and more work to make them stand out! I think that's what I would to do :)
This is really good advice for a beginner.
Now I am not so sad about my transitions and I will be more daring with my contrasts,
The smoothness will come later.
Really wonderful video that is going to inform a lot of my design work, not just painting. Thank you!
Holy shit. Brilliant, concise and I'm literally now doing cy contrast first then blending. Thanks.

For contrast you need to use the glaze technique? I am new painting and i am watching allot of videos
Contrast means you need bright and dark areas on your mini. You can achieve that with a lot of different techniques. Glazing is just tge process of applying thin layers of colors. You can use it to both shade and highlight your minis. But you could also use layers, washes and drybrushing, stippling, etc. Up to you!
