After 30 years of bedroom jamming, I finally got on a stage. My local club has an open mic night. The owner doesn't care what you do, as long as it's entertaining and about 15 to 20 minutes. Many get up and sing. Some get up to do a standup comedy routine, etc. It's really a diverse line up. So I made three backing tracks, loaded them on my Jamman Looper, took my Line 6 Amplifi 150 and control board and my Strat and did a three song set. I got paid two free drinks and a half off my third. During my "set" I had two girls get up and dance, the waitress was also groovin and a table of guys were really headbobin' (not quite headbanging) That's it. My mouth was dry as cotton when I finished. But there was no errors, no string breaks, nothing went wrong at all. And I , for the first time, got applause. What you have done already Rhett is beyond most of our wildest dreams. So anything going forward is just gravy. Pure gravy. What you accomplished is never going to diminish over time, just get better. You will gloss over the things that annoyed you, the travel, the hotels, the cab rides, the endless set up and teardowns...all that will remain is gold.
Rhett, this is why "living in the moment" is so important. Making music with friends and getting paid to do it is never something to take for granted, although so many people do. Until it's over.
I really needed this. My band had 2 months of shows cancelled and this made me really grateful for what I’ve been able to do so far. You’re the reason I started Vlogging as well. Thanks Rhett! Keep it up.
Nice work man.. I was in the Netherlands for a gig in early 2019! So much fun hanging out in Amsterdam and Utrecht! Supposed to be going back in late July but maybe not now..
Hi Rhett, been a subscriber for a while now. I'd just like to thank you for all the hard work you've put into this channel, in particular the gig vlog series. You're a fantastic guitar player and a constant inspiration for me. Because of this series, you've inspired me to want to play guitar professionally just like you do. Thanks again and keep up the great content.
Found your channel recently, binging many of the great educational and tour videos which made me look forward to seeing gigs again - from the audience (not a musician). It’s embarassing how much fun it was to see you tour our little low country and enjoy it so much. You must have gotten great advice because those cabins in the woods of Ermelo did look like a great base camp and it’s true - from it you can reach most of the country in under 2 hours…
Glad to hear you're still well Rhett. I'm over here in Seattle Wa and it's heartbreaking to watch my friends have their careers pulled right out of their hands as artists. There's a lot of fear we also won't see any of our music venues survive this. Crazy ever hear those words uttered about Seattle. I know we'll all come out on the other end stronger. Thanks for also sharing your story. It's nice to see how we're all enduring these changes.
Just catching up with these older videos. End of year, end of decade, but the beginning of what you dreamed of. Not many people achieve this level of satisfaction with their trajectory in life. Cherish this time. Cheers!
First @Rhett Shull video I ever stumbled across was the HX Stomp mini board. What makes me subscribe and follow (other than I really love the way you play) is you let us be a part of your journey. I'm learning the journey is so much more valuable than the destination. Thanks for letting us tag along!
I really enjoyed the gig in Groningen, and meeting you in person afterwards. I look forward to seeing you play in Hamburg. The value of live music will reassert itself I’m sure, especially after we’ve been deprived of it for so long!
i'm old now but watching this record of your precious time took me back, to days and nights that will always be golden to me, smokey basement clubs and echo chamber halls, crazy times good times being history
We were there in Dordrecht! Loved the show. Real intimate, had a great night. Thanks and let’s hope it won’t be long before we can all make and enjoy live music again.
These backstage journal videos have been my new favorite videos to go through while spending so much time at home. Thanks for putting up so many and for keeping them going, Rhett.
I really enjoyed this program. I’m an amateur musician, I play the piano and Keyboards, and terrible guitar. I’ve had a wonderful life in a totally different field, but have always wondered what my life might have been like as a professional musician. This particular show gave me a glimpse of that. Thanks. I do have a couple of friends who spent their life as professional musicians and they say they wonder how it would have been to have done what I did. Life’s so strange.
Listening to your last bit in the woods and thinking about what you said at the beginning of the video is very heartbreaking man ! Hope you're doing well during those times and, like you said, it will take time but we'll make it ! Thanks for all your videos ! It really helps so much people right now. Keep on Rhett !
I used to play in a tribute band that hit all the same spots in the Netherlands, some of the club's are there are amazing. Such good funding for the arts and a massive appreciation for good music of all styles and genres. Great people and a lovely place. Keep up the good work Rhett 👌
Dude, I love the specs you rock! I'm very sorry to hear about how the crisis has dramatically changed how you tour and do live shows, but I hope you the best in opportunities and health!
Hi Rhett, was just looking at some of your videos and saw this one.. Feels like ages ago when we were fortunate seeing you, Phil, Noah and Ian play at Simplon. Actually the entire evening was amazing. Not only for us but also for other musicians who were at the venue to see you guys play. We also feel the lack of gigs but we try to make the most of it. And whether it’ll be here in Groningen or in the US I’m sure we’re going to enjoy your music together!! Thanks for sharing this footage and your thoughts! We’ll meet again!! And for sure with stroopwafels haha..
This is really cool to me, since I am from the Netherlands. It's funny to see how you think a two hour drive is great while we would say 2 hours is crazy far away. The bungalo campings, the forests, the small clubs, Albert Heijn To Go, it all seems so normal to me. Cool video! Really great to get an outside perspective on the country.
Rhett, I’ve really become a fan of your channel the last two months, I am so into this series, man. It’s really made being confined at home much easier, thanks for everything.
You’re my No. 1 RUclips person. I was so looking forward to seeing you May 2nd. Oh well. There will be other times. Thanks for being there for us and helping us through this mess.
I’m a drummer and I just watched all of this. This is great. Thanks for posting. I never did understand your hesitation in the first place. Highly entertaining.
Can't wait till we can all get back out there! Until then we can create, reflect, appreciate what we can, help others however we can and grow. Love to everyone out there, hope you are all well
So cool you like my country and had I known around that time that you played here, I'd have tried to get to one of the shows, so inspiring! Hang in there until normality returns and live the dream, you're a talented guitarist that deserves to be up there on the stage!
What a truly excellent vlog, totally enjoyable entertainment. Good people, great insight & observations and superb music & musicians. Superb & thank you Rhett
Hang in there, Rhett, you and the band. You're doing what you were born to do. We'll all be back out there playing and enjoying shows, before we know it!
About 12 years ago December just gone the covers band I was in was coming to an end, we had all agreed it was time. The last six or so gigs we had, I put as much effort into enjoying the playing than I had done for a while thinking these could be the last ones i ever do. On the day of our last gig, which we were all looking forward to, although it was going to be a little sad, I lost my mum and so I (we) never got to do our last gig. I am so glad I approached those last gigs the way I did because you never know what is round the ne t corner. I'm 57 now and not sure if I will ever play live again, I have a small home studio and friends come round and we jam but nothing quite beats the feeling of a good live gig, may be one day for old times sake. All the best from the UK and I hope everything kicks back in quick when these weird times finish, stay safe.
Subscribed. Dude, great channel. So genuine. I pick up a guitar every now and then so not great but your love of music and life is an inspiration. Roll on live shows and seeing you back on the road. Until then, keep rocking tge channel - it's awesome 👌

Fantastic video! I was hoping you'd post something from this run eventually. First time hearing you sing like this, and I knew you'd been working on it. Well done! I think it'll serve the band - and you - very well going forward.
Excellent video! I super miss seeing new faces & new places every day. Super exhausting, and that gig-butt 😝, but, totally worth it. It’ll come back around! ❤️
Love the record you're keeping ! Look forward to watching what comes next. I'm into true passion of music. I listen to Dave Mathews,Dio,Louis Prima, Whitesnake you name it. Dig what you've been doing. Hope all is well.

I have missed seeing you on tour. Thank you for this. I know you have to miss it. I am an old guy, I have a much younger friend and we play together "for free" once in a while and I miss that. Hope you back up on stage soon.
Thanks, Rhett ... I really like your style, attitude and, of course, your tasty playing. I have watched a number of your tour vids and find them very entertaining. When this CV-19 things dies off (it will) make your way to Hartford and I'll buy you some a coffee and a stroop waffle. Hang in there ... there's more to come ... thank you.
Wonderful addition to your video library. Thanks as always for making the effort to produce these segments; they're really well done. Some professional video/film doc'ers could learn from your approach.
So sad I couldn’t make it to the Dordrecht show... It’s fun to see some stages and greenroom in your video that I’ve played myself. Hope to catch you on the next Dutch run after COVID-19
Love your vids man...as a musician getting ready to go to school in august to get my degree in music it makes me so hopeful and excited for my future✊🏻
wow, i'm pleasantly surprised at how good your videos are . I've come over from Rick Beato so i knew about your musicianship but have to say you have great video production skills too. Entertaining, informative, good technical quality. thank you!
