My Last Gig (for a while)

- Back in December of last year I went on tour with Noah Guthrie & Good Trouble for a short 10 day run in The Netherlands, at the time we didn't know this would be our last shows for quite a while and since then I've learned to not take these opportunities for granted.

After 30 years of bedroom jamming, I finally got on a stage. My local club has an open mic night. The owner doesn't care what you do, as long as it's entertaining and about 15 to 20 minutes. Many get up and sing. Some get up to do a standup comedy routine, etc. It's really a diverse line up. So I made three backing tracks, loaded them on my Jamman Looper, took my Line 6 Amplifi 150 and control board and my Strat and did a three song set. I got paid two free drinks and a half off my third. During my "set" I had two girls get up and dance, the waitress was also groovin and a table of guys were really headbobin' (not quite headbanging) That's it. My mouth was dry as cotton when I finished. But there was no errors, no string breaks, nothing went wrong at all. And I , for the first time, got applause. What you have done already Rhett is beyond most of our wildest dreams. So anything going forward is just gravy. Pure gravy. What you accomplished is never going to diminish over time, just get better. You will gloss over the things that annoyed you, the travel, the hotels, the cab rides, the endless set up and teardowns...all that will remain is gold.
So happy for you!
You did it bro..
Careful. It’s addicting. :)
THAT IS AWESOME. Congrats and well-done! Incredibly brave of you to make your first time a solo outing! Only one question now: when's the next gig? :)
Love this story! Made my day, thanks!
Being Dutch casually saying ‘the show is only a 2h drive’ is really weird haha!
Hahaha same
Tell Danish Pete we said hello
@@warmcrunch3829 you better be trolling bro! Nethermark and Dantherlands aren't the same country!
BartdWmusic (yes I’m trolling)
Actually when Rhett say that, is when I stopped the video. All NL is about a 2 hour drive unless you're in one of the extremities like Zeeland, Limburg or Groningen :-)
Loved that moment with Paul Davids! Such a sweet little exchange, that is the look I get when watching live music
Rhett, this is why "living in the moment" is so important. Making music with friends and getting paid to do it is never something to take for granted, although so many people do. Until it's over.
Your work with Noah is really starting to make the genre grow on me.
Mike Fenton I’ve been wondering what would you call this genre, americana?
@@Livelaughlimpbizkit Roots Rock, or Americana.
@@Livelaughlimpbizkit worship
Chris Kilian worship??
Chris Kilian no lmao
That message near the end of the video takes on a whole new meaning because of what's happening now. Wonderful video. Perfect timing.
I used to play in a tribute band that hit all the same spots in the Netherlands, some of the club's are there are amazing. Such good funding for the arts and a massive appreciation for good music of all styles and genres. Great people and a lovely place. Keep up the good work Rhett 👌
@ Rhett Shull
Love the fact, that you enjoyed this small tour in the Netherlands, appriciating the country and the stages you played.
Sadly ,you couldn't play in Paradiso,Amsterdam and Luxor Live, Arnhem, which are beautiful places to play.
Hi Rhett, been a subscriber for a while now. I'd just like to thank you for all the hard work you've put into this channel, in particular the gig vlog series. You're a fantastic guitar player and a constant inspiration for me. Because of this series, you've inspired me to want to play guitar professionally just like you do. Thanks again and keep up the great content.
Thanks Josh!
@@RhettShull Same. can't say it any better @josh Stevenson
Man! The Harmony in the group is sounding KILLER!!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Awesome, Rhett! Been missing these vlogs! Thanks man
Motorhead " We are the road crew " , comes to my mind watching this.....stay safe, rock on! Greetings from Switzerland🤘🎸
a nice humble sentiment there Rhett - we are all feeling the lack of gigs... goodonya
Paul Davids went to your show! How cool😎!! You are a rock star brother! It's refreshing to see a musician, whose area of excellence falls under lead guitar, be so humble and gracious. Much love to you brother! And I say musician cause you are much much more than just a lead guitarist.
Rhett, you’re a regular backup singer bud!! You’ve conquered your fear right on!! I’m trying to conquer my fear of messing up on stage. I’m a new guitarists I have a few gigs under my belt but still when I make mistakes I feel like I’ve let the band down because they work just as hard to make it right and that really bothers me brother! I’ve nearly quit altogether a few times because of it-but they don’t let me!
Thanks for sharing those moments. I’m following these “Road” vídeos as it was a Netflix serie. You should consider to edit those, you have great (real) stories here.
Stay safe, stay strong, and thank you for the inspiration.
I miss the fire outta seeing these type videos. I know you're hands are tied Rhett...these are what got me addicted to your videos originally
Excellent vlog Rhett! Great to hear you folks play again.
12:31 Paul Davids OMG!
Throughly enjoyed this - thanks for posting. Let's hope we can all get back to some kind of 'normal' real soon. REegards from the UK
I really needed this. My band had 2 months of shows cancelled and this made me really grateful for what I’ve been able to do so far. You’re the reason I started Vlogging as well. Thanks Rhett! Keep it up.
This band sounds so good, I listen to it everyday, Pardon Me is my favorite one. Keep rockin` guys.
Rhett, that was an amazing insight and an inspiration for the future once all this Covid has gone away. Keep on keeping on! 🤘🏻🎸🖖🏻
Smooth slide solo Rhett. I've always liked your slide style.
This is really cool to me, since I am from the Netherlands. It's funny to see how you think a two hour drive is great while we would say 2 hours is crazy far away. The bungalo campings, the forests, the small clubs, Albert Heijn To Go, it all seems so normal to me. Cool video! Really great to get an outside perspective on the country.
@@hillie47 cool, waar woon je nu als ik vragen mag? Er is inderdaad heel veel veranderd in korte tijd!
I hope for a happy ending to this story, or a balmy beginning to the next chapter. I hope that once live music comes back, there will be a greater appreciation and demand for it. There are definitely a lot of people picking up a guitar again or for the first time. It's probably as good a time to teach music online.
Great episode Rhett, makes me want to go to the Netherlands.
Anyone also thinks it would be great a video about his amps? Especially the new ones, I need to hear that Hiwatt and I'm curious about the Orange too
He has one on the Hiwatt, its something like "the best amp I own"
i love your choir in the backstage sounds total professional
We are not guaranteed tomorrow, live each day as if it were your last, for one day you will be right
15:06 dean town playing in the background, the sheer contrast of music
I noticed it instantly
my thoughts at the end without "there is no plan B" : "maybe we gonna need a plan B"
Good for you, man. Not many people can say...”I’m doing what I pictured I’d be doing when I was working my butt off to get it.”
2020 was my year to finally get out and see more shows. I promised myself that I'd buy tickets to everything I wanted this year.
2020 was like....."WRONG!"
Are you guys going to do make up shows?
I really enjoyed the gig in Groningen, and meeting you in person afterwards. I look forward to seeing you play in Hamburg. The value of live music will reassert itself I’m sure, especially after we’ve been deprived of it for so long!
A great video indeed. A great story teller.
Stroopwafels are life. Our pride and joy.
I really enjoyed this program. I’m an amateur musician, I play the piano and Keyboards, and terrible guitar. I’ve had a wonderful life in a totally different field, but have always wondered what my life might have been like as a professional musician. This particular show gave me a glimpse of that. Thanks. I do have a couple of friends who spent their life as professional musicians and they say they wonder how it would have been to have done what I did. Life’s so strange.
A nice expose of what playing in a working band is really like. I'm thankful I can relate to these experiences. It isn't all "David Lee Roth" parties, not even close. Those that seek the DLR experience will likely crash and burn before they get close to it. It isn't reality. Reality is schedules, appointments, expectations, and hard work. The reality is even harsher than that, 90% of those that pursue this will fail to profit and fail to be able to continue touring. Financial responsibility is the number-one concern. Without that, any band is doomed before they get started. If you want to be a rock star, learn about finances and money first. Your odds of victory will be much better for it.
Dude, I love the specs you rock! I'm very sorry to hear about how the crisis has dramatically changed how you tour and do live shows, but I hope you the best in opportunities and health!
Just catching up with these older videos. End of year, end of decade, but the beginning of what you dreamed of. Not many people achieve this level of satisfaction with their trajectory in life. Cherish this time. Cheers!
This video bummed me out! its a great video but I REALLY NEED TO GIG AGAIN!!!!
Still.... Great video Rhett! and your backing vocals have really been getting better! keep being awesome dude!
I miss gigging so bad. I’ve already had a bunch missed already. It’s always been my escape. When that’s removed it it takes away a healthy release. Sucks.
I feel you, man! 16 and i was diagnosed with clinical depression, anxiety, and ADHD. Always worrying, always down, and there’s nothing that brightens my mood more than being onstage with my best friends and getting paid for it too. Hope it all turns out well for you, and myself! We just gotta keep practicing, and keep learning!
Experts says we are only at the beginning of coronavirus in the U.S. And Americans are not taking social distancing seriously, and who knows how long before we have a vaccine. Until then, and a little time after, live music, especially indoors, will be rare. And how many venues will be out of business by then? And how many fans won't come back? I'm asking because I am a musician too wanting to get back to gigging. Maybe summer 2021 we will be at semi-normal.
Ian is a killer drummer. Love his parts and vibe.
Rewatching a lot of these backstage live videos, I've come to this realization too. I'd love to jam with Ian (and everyone else obviously).
nice slide solo, greetings from holland
Now that's a ride cymbal that means business
23:27 Yeah that's your typical Dutch audience.
George Lucas true lol
i have to admit it is strange to se my own country and city (groningen) from fhits point of view. Haha. I wish i would've knew you were coming to the netherlands than i would go to the show!! and youre were welcome to checkout my studio too! maybe next time. If you want we can arrange somting in the near (healthy) future. Let me know! (would be awesome)
Your background harmonies and vocals are super great! Just takes it to another level
Hey Rhett. Heard you mention Melatonin. Does it give you strange, really vivid dreams? That's what it was doing to me. So vivid that they were causing me to not get rested because of the dreams. I talked to others who experienced this. Just thought I would ask? Love your vids. You're a class act.
I second the STROOP WAFFLE OBESSION. 🙌
This video makes me want to become a touring musician so much :)
That was so cool seeing you with Paul Davids. Sons from different mothers.
Found your channel recently, binging many of the great educational and tour videos which made me look forward to seeing gigs again - from the audience (not a musician). It’s embarassing how much fun it was to see you tour our little low country and enjoy it so much. You must have gotten great advice because those cabins in the woods of Ermelo did look like a great base camp and it’s true - from it you can reach most of the country in under 2 hours…
Glad to hear you're still well Rhett. I'm over here in Seattle Wa and it's heartbreaking to watch my friends have their careers pulled right out of their hands as artists. There's a lot of fear we also won't see any of our music venues survive this. Crazy ever hear those words uttered about Seattle. I know we'll all come out on the other end stronger. Thanks for also sharing your story. It's nice to see how we're all enduring these changes.
Nice work man.. I was in the Netherlands for a gig in early 2019! So much fun hanging out in Amsterdam and Utrecht! Supposed to be going back in late July but maybe not now..
10:24, that blew my mind. By the way, will you come to Spain?
Those filtertrons holy smokes!!!
Hey Rhett when will the new songs like You’re The Only Light I Need be on Spotify? Thanks!
20:32 "Is Raviooooli oooli thaaat I need"
These tour vlogs are just awesome. I love what you're doing with the whole channel and I wish you continued success!
I feel you Rhett. My band lost a bunch of shows, but luckily, I don't make my living as a musician - we just do it for fun. I think I'm a little more sad about all of the artists I had tickets to see that have now had to (understandably) cancel. Wire, Swans, Einsturtzende Neubaten, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds.
Great taste dude!
greart vid...nice slide guitar work...did u bring all that gear, amps from usa?? im new at this, but wouldnt a couple of kempers do it? would be great to make a vid, of how small u can make a gig :-)
“I can’t decide if I should take a melatonin to sleep on the plane”
Fucking kids these days. What ever happened to Jack Daniels and ludes? You’re a touring musician for Christ’s sake.
He’s a nance.
Love your vids man...as a musician getting ready to go to school in august to get my degree in music it makes me so hopeful and excited for my future✊🏻
So sad I couldn’t make it to the Dordrecht show... It’s fun to see some stages and greenroom in your video that I’ve played myself. Hope to catch you on the next Dutch run after COVID-19
Dutch crowds being enthusiastic as ever. Ah well, at least they shut up during the songs, that says a lot actually these days... Rhett, I'm sorry I couldn't attend one of the shows, I would have loved to meet you. Come back soon! Until then, keep up what you're doing and of course, stay healthy, safe and unfortunately, at home...
Love the record you're keeping ! Look forward to watching what comes next. I'm into true passion of music. I listen to Dave Mathews,Dio,Louis Prima, Whitesnake you name it. Dig what you've been doing. Hope all is well.
Excellent video! I super miss seeing new faces & new places every day. Super exhausting, and that gig-butt 😝, but, totally worth it. It’ll come back around! ❤️
Sometimes I look to you and think: "Goddamn, he is a grown up Morty!"
Other times I think: "Oh geez, I was right about that!"
Just had a full rewatch. Insane.
@@CarloCalcaterra92 once you saw it, you cant un-saw it ;)
Man this is so inspiring, I'm also studying music and hope to get where you are one day
About 12 years ago December just gone the covers band I was in was coming to an end, we had all agreed it was time. The last six or so gigs we had, I put as much effort into enjoying the playing than I had done for a while thinking these could be the last ones i ever do. On the day of our last gig, which we were all looking forward to, although it was going to be a little sad, I lost my mum and so I (we) never got to do our last gig. I am so glad I approached those last gigs the way I did because you never know what is round the ne t corner. I'm 57 now and not sure if I will ever play live again, I have a small home studio and friends come round and we jam but nothing quite beats the feeling of a good live gig, may be one day for old times sake. All the best from the UK and I hope everything kicks back in quick when these weird times finish, stay safe.
You’re my No. 1 RUclips person. I was so looking forward to seeing you May 2nd. Oh well. There will be other times. Thanks for being there for us and helping us through this mess.
First @Rhett Shull video I ever stumbled across was the HX Stomp mini board. What makes me subscribe and follow (other than I really love the way you play) is you let us be a part of your journey. I'm learning the journey is so much more valuable than the destination. Thanks for letting us tag along!
We were there in Dordrecht! Loved the show. Real intimate, had a great night. Thanks and let’s hope it won’t be long before we can all make and enjoy live music again.
This is a great video Rhett!! The harmonies in Noah’s band have gotten amazing. Thanks and stay safe, man!
When you were doing the segment where you at just gotten into the airport in Amsterdam? You had pie eyes. Golly jeepers, I wonder what you did to make your eyes like that in Amsterdam ✌️😁✌️
Good work Rhett on the backup up vocals, you seem to be getting more comfortable with it. Adds a lot to the live experience.
Hey Rhett, maybe you could do an episode about how to travel effectively especially when you have to fly. How much gear do you travel with? Do you check your guitars or take them in the plane with you? If you check guitars what cases do you use? How do you deal with power, 120-220 volts. I'm sure you can think of a bunch of other thing that come up. Really enjoy your videos. Cheers.
Jealous of that tour schedule! Whenever I tour it's more like play show > walmart parking lot > play show > parking lot in the middle of nowhere > off day 9 hr drive > truck stop parking lot.
You and the band always seem so relaxed together! Is this because you're friends as well as band members but you don't live in each other's pockets i.e. don't spend every hour of every day together? UK tour?
Looks like Rhett's ready to join the Leningrad Cowboys...
Sound great on backup vocals Rhett. ( know how much you like to sing) :-) Myself.....I love to sing as much as playing guitar. Love Noah's band.
So cool you like my country and had I known around that time that you played here, I'd have tried to get to one of the shows, so inspiring!
Hang in there until normality returns and live the dream, you're a talented guitarist that deserves to be up there on the stage!
I literally cried out “NOOoOOoO” when I saw the title of this video, but I cant wait to hear and watch what you have to say Rhett!
Man, watching this makes me miss playing shows! Can't wait to get back into the groove of things once all of this mess is over with 🤘
my god thay oyster wrapped gretsch kit is outstanding!!!!! new subscriber here, nice channel great quality, good laughs, amazing music, I was sold quickly to be honest lol!!! yup you got drummer fans too haha
12:34 Great Paul Davids cameo
Can't wait till we can all get back out there! Until then we can create, reflect, appreciate what we can, help others however we can and grow. Love to everyone out there, hope you are all well
What a crazy time, knowing that there are no gigs for the foreseeable future. Plus the fact that at least half the usual work/pay is just, gone...
Salutations from grey and ghostly quiet Ireland! ☘️☮️🤘🏽🤠👍🏽☮️☘️
Rhett, Just recently got turned on to you and the Band from Rick Beato. REALLY DIG you guys. I'm a 67 yo player of guitarist vocalist and been going thru your tune catalog and haven't found much I haven't put on a playlist. Keep up the great work and best to all you guys. Thx Robb B McCain
Darn it Rhett! Ya got me cuttin' onions again. My eyes are watering after this episode.
Thanks, Rhett ... I really like your style, attitude and, of course, your tasty playing. I have watched a number of your tour vids and find them very entertaining. When this CV-19 things dies off (it will) make your way to Hartford and I'll buy you some a coffee and a stroop waffle. Hang in there ... there's more to come ... thank you.
It’s great to see that you enjoyed our little “kikkerlandje” so much! Good luck in these difficult times!
Thanks for the informative videos. I've been in that endless loop (30 years!) of going from pedals to processors to pedals and then back again. I'm looking at processors again for my fly rig and many of the current systems (Helix, GT-1000...) are more complex than I need for my purposes. I noticed you had the Line 6 HX Effects in your rig on the Netherlands tour. Has that replaced your use of Helix Stomp? I really want to get to a small compact device that works like a pedal board in front of my amp but offers a few nice to have features for running direct to the board.
Uhhhhh new mic? Really enjoyed it
Hope you're well. Stay safe
What’s the translation app that you used on the sign? That looks insanely useful!!
I'm pretty sure he was using google translate
That's google translate n if u have problem ,take a picture n press 'select all'...
I love Holland. We go every autumn, but perhaps not this year.
