I think your African Flower adaptation is brilliant. I made one following your tutorial and was much happier with it than the usual granny square the label calls for 😊
My mom taught me how to do a granny square in 1968, and she did chain 1 between the shells and chain 3 to turn the corners - so I think that’s a very traditional, old-fashioned way to do granny squares. All the granny square tutorials I’ve seen online don’t use any chains between shells and only chain 2 for the corners, just like your preferred method. This more modern method makes a less lacy, more compact granny square. I’d even call them neater and more “tailor” looking. The old-fashioned granny squares are definitely hole-ier! I think your hexagon grannies look fabulous!! With mind-bobbling number of variations on granny squares, it’s interesting that Red Heart came out with a specialty yarn for grannies. Trying to come up with a solution to weaving in all those flippin’ ends is a heroic undertaking!j
Yes! I don’t know why they focused on such a traditional style! It would have been pretty easy to roll with the less chains for the “new age” wave of crocheters. But ah well. I still like the fact I don’t have to change colors and don’t have to weave in ends. Even if I do have to fudge it! It’s a cool concept and I like that yarn companies are at least trying to things! I am in love with those hexis! Not in love with the fact I’ll be seaming about 80 of them together when I’m all done. 🤣
@@LolaRyckin this case you have to use the extra chains to get the yarn to do its thing. If you didn’t do them then your left with extra at the end of the color
Sounds like the pattern on the label is an old school granny square…that’s exactly how my grandma taught me to make them. The African flower is really perfect, though!! It’s going to be gorgeous! I crocheted a hippo once using that motif…maybe I need to make one for myself with this!
I wish I could send you pictures of my squares from this yarn I am obsessed because I can fly through making the squares I finished a whole skein in a day and a half and had 15 squares and a baby square. I did have to use a different pattern for the granny square 😊
Yay! I’m glad you are having a good time with it! I also am getting 15 per skein! At least out of the first two skeins I’ve looked at. That’s exciting! I’d love the details on what you are doing! Also you can email me a pic if you’d like at thecattladydesigns@gmail.com or find me on Instagram as thecattlady!
@novaconetta1577 I measured the tail anywhere between 7 to 9 inches depending on skein they vary. I did magic loop and tighten the ring I only chain 2 at corners and I pull out the entire color I am working on in case I have to add a double crochet to the 3 double crochet in space. Hope that helps
Finally! An honest review. Thank you. I have some on order. I'm 100% sure it won't work for me either. I make my squares nothing like the requirements. I turn at every round, no chain between clusters and only 2 chains on the 1st round. I'll try it their way 1st, do a vid the move on to something else with it. Thanks.
I did hear people mentioning turning their work actually worked out for them. But if you are missing all those chain spaces…that could make it awkward. You could get lucky though!!! I tend to always NOT be lucky in these kind of scenarios. 🤣
I like your African flower square a lot, and will try it ! Incidentally, I’ve been making the traditional granny squares, following the red heart instructions. Starting with a 4 1/2 inch tail and using an H 5.0 hook with relaxed but not loose tension each square has come out perfectly. The yarn is spun for this project and exact color increments. If used correctly with the right gauge, each square will always come out the same. Enjoy !
In the fourth row of your African violet flower, if you chain two instead of just one in between the three stitches. you would probably end up with less extra yarn and also leave a big enough space in your final round with the black so you could see it better. This is such a beautiful looking motif and I am looking forward to trying it out. I just got my Red Heart Granny Square yarn today.
I was finally able to get ONE square according to their pattern. Spent hours trying to make it work out. I've been crocheting for 50ish years, so i can control my stitch tension. Didn't like the square that it made. Big, floppy and holey. Love your squares - lots of potential if theres a built- in way to get the yarn to line up, like slip stitching for a few spaces.
Yeah I still don’t love it when I make the actual intended square. It’s a little disappointing in that aspect. I’m just glad I got something I liked since I bought so much of it and didn’t really want to have to return it. 🫣
I was struggling with this too! Thank you for demonstrating how you use it. I was able to make the African Flower much easier than the granny square! I wonder what other motifs this yarn could work for!
Oh yay! I’m glad you were able to get the hexi to work! I still love the idea of this yarn but yeah it’s been a struggle for a lot of people when it doesn’t just “work” like it’s supposed to. It’s kind of like it either works or it doesn’t. Haha. But I was determined to figure something out because it is really fun!!
One comment to help, especially for newbies. I work with Red Heart yarn all the time. The more you pull it out, the more it will stretch. Your solution of sl st around to the next space if you did not use up all the color in the row, is a great one.
Watching the granny Square one. Have you ever tried a chain one and then a half DC to join. It then puts you right in the middle of the corner so you can chain three finish that half a cluster and you just always end on that point. I know this doesn’t really pertain to the all in one granny. But it’s my favorite way.
thank you so much for showing how you made the African flower work with this yarn! I was able to make it work for my own tension by making some heavy modifications to rounds 3 and 4 and I'm so happy with it 😍
So happy to hear! I think that’s the key takeaway - everyone needs to play around with what their gauge and tension is and just adapt to make something you will love. I’ll never be able to make a decent regular granny but am happy with the mitered square and the violet for sure!
Starting with the chain 6 has you finishing the round in a place that sets you up to be near the place you want to be to start the next round, so that you do not need to slip stitch across the first cluster (with by now, the next color and therefore it shows).
Yes that makes sense I just hate the way it looks honestly. I just don’t love the pattern they use. I’ve seen a lot of other creators adapt the pattern to what they like but I just can’t get it to work unless I use a huge hook which then makes the whole squares too sloppy and loose for my liking.
Thanks for your hard work on this. I'm 75 and started grannies at age 14. After watching your video and others I'm just not going to use this yarn. I hate red heart to begin with. I also long ago learned to crochet over ends when doing color changes. That avoids sewing ends in! What I like from your video is the African voilet pattern. I agree slip stitch to where you need to be is the way to go. I will not mess with this yarn. Thank you for this. I want to do the hexagon violet.
There is definitely a love/hate mentality with red heart. Haha! It’s not my favorite but for a couch blanket that’s gonna be thrown around it’ll be perfect! It tends to wash and dry up softer than it starts and I don’t tend to be sensitive to any yarns (except for one terrible experience with my first sweater I ever made. 🤣) I usually crochet over ends too so that does make it easier in that sense! The yarn is a cool concept but I don’t think it quite hit the mark. Sure is making the crochet community a buzz though!!
it looks interesting, but i will try it when the yarn goes on sale.i like the way you say to not totally stress it, at the end of the day, it looks good anyway
I was way too focused on trying to get it perfect that I totally stressed and regretted my purchase. After I stepped away and came back (and decided the hassle of returning back to the store was definitely not worth it. lol) I just decided I’m gonna just make it work and not overthink it anymore. And yes - sales are good!!
I do love the African Flower pattern that you were able to create. I've never seen it before but I do like to learn new. It's beautiful. ❤ But I do see the problems you and others encountered. I have not gotten any of that yarn yet but I'm planning to soon. Thank you so much for your time and efforts. I'm so glad I found you and I'm now subscribed to your channel.
Thank you! I hope you can work something out with the yarn if you decide to get some! As long as your expectations are in check with the fact that it may not work out the first time, and that’s it’s okay to experiment - it can be a a fun process! Otherwise it can be very frustrating!
I like the colors of the yarns but probably would never try it for it's intended purpose. I'm more likely to use it in a scrappy looking project. The inconsistencies would drive me crazier than I already am. I like the flower motif.
Definitely don’t blame ya! If your system isn’t broken don’t fix it right?! I just couldn’t resist jumping on the bandwagon! I also don’t tend to have a lot of coordinating worsted scraps in my stash. Not enough for a blanket at least!
If I had lots of time , I would persevere, hate being beaten, by a ball of yarn, Too many grandkids, not enough time or energy to go round alas. Thank you for getting back to me, regards Pat@@TheCATTLadyDesigns
@@patbrain913I can totally get behind that too! Honestly if wasn’t winter break for the kids and not much going on in general - I would have given up and threw it in the corner I’m sure! Just so happened we had nothing going on right now!! I also got to the point that I really needed to “conquer” this yarn for my liking. 😂
guess what it is january 7th i bought the granny square yarn on this day for $7.12 on sale, original price was 9.99 it will arrive in 2 weeks, i was excited about it, because everyone on youtube has been talking about it
I tried this yard for granny squares. Gave up and tried a blanket. Hated how the colors came out. Finally tried a hat, crocheted in rounds from the top down. That worked and is actually really pretty! Bottom line is, I think this yarn will work for anything crocheted in rounds. I might try a market bag next.
Ooh I actually love the idea of a market bag!! At the end of the day it’s just a kind of variegated yarn. Haha. It’s cool when it does work that way it is supposed to but I liked how it worked out just randomly too.
I am using it to knit a blanket.. but don't tell anybody LOL. I am using the Black Moody Cherry colorway and it is beautiful. It has 2 dominate colors with splashes of the other colors. I am using a US 10 needle size. I will be trying this with the White Green Scream colorway too.
I love the idea of just letting the colors stripe randomly in a large blanket! and on US10 it's gotta be going by a bit fast! (Sorry, late reply, been very chaotic lately!)
Hi! Towards the end of the video I demonstrate how I make it. Are you looking for something more detailed? I don’t go into how to make certain stitches so knowledge of the basics is necessary! Starts at 38:52. 😄
I remember when using rh stripes to male an argyle blanket sometimes tou have to add an extra DC, or slip stitches or loosened/tightened the gauge. It was worth the e tra woek in the end. You'll figure out your tricks as you go. It's gonna be amazing
First time watching I was really impressed and will watch many more , love to crochet and create new things that’s my passion and happy place. I also learned very young, but didn’t pursue it until maybe 15 years ago..
Thank you! I wish I would have learned young - but I probably wouldn't have really gotten into it until I'm older anyways! Plenty of time left to enjoy!
Want to thank you. I didn't give up because of you and the slip stitches def are the way to go at the end of a round. Better to have too much yarn at the end rather than tear out stitches
So glad you are getting it to work out even if it means a little slip stitches. Hahah. Yeah it definitely makes it more workable when you have a little extra vs not enough!
Thank you so much for doing this video. I'm an experienced crocheter. I ended up going up to a size 8mm then back down (and up repeatedly including a 7mm which is not the sweet spot one would hope) and slip stitching which just irritated me. Interestingly only my Furls Odyssey 8mm got me to the almost exact color change which just highlights the subtle differences in same size hooks and the hook design impact on tension....those are discontinued so other sizes are unavailable. Fannntastic... For the last round, I had to jump down to a 6.5mm to make it work as the 8mm was too loose despite tightening and retightening my tension. I kept thinking geez..what am I doing wrong here. What a pain. I love your African violet adapted pattern, I'm going to try that. Much appreciated! Red Heart made a massive mistake with this yarn. Its almost like Wile E. Coyote designed it. Wait....did he? There it is. 😂
Yeah the concept was awesome!!! But in reality it ends up just being so annoying. Which frankly should be obvious - we have gauge swatches for a reason - because everyone crochets different, hooks are different, and honestly dyeing is never that precise!!! Once I just decided I wasn’t gonna be mad about it, it was fun to figure out. 🤣
I get The idea good for newbies and for experience crocheters it drives us bananas with getting the tension right and then joining them together to make something
It seemed like a good idea….but just don’t think it hit the mark! I’m still enjoying making all my African flowers though…but even after making 30+ I still have to rip back and fix tension here and there to stay consistent!!
@TheCATTLadyDesigns I ran out when I hear of this yarn and bought 3 skeins of the cream/tan. I spent a very frustrating hour trying to line it up right, gave up. But I do love the mitered granny and will try that out😄
@@TheTugboatgirl hours were definitely spent over here too. lol and I can’t get the regular granny to look right at all without slip stitching the colors a bunch!
I love the idea of slip stitching the colour runs, but it’s such a waste of yarn, but I guess the same as cutting and weaving. I bought a bunch of this yarn and dreading this process. I tried it and my tension does not fit the yarn colour changes like you. I will try the African flower 🌺 Thank you for the info
I hope you find something that works for you! At least with the African flower I don’t end up slipping too much now that I’ve figured out how my tension needs to slightly change each round. But sometimes it does end up being more than a “tails” length which is annoying!! But it was a fun experiment at least!
Spent all morning trying to get this yarn to work. Changed 5 different hooks, had to unravel them all. That being said, I just crochet at will. Everyone liked the look.
I will have to make a short video on that! I mean, I'm just shoving my yarn either in one of the holders at the side or using a drawstring bag on the "arms". It's wonky but it works!
I have looked high & low for a pattern of a granny square I seen in an advertisement. I just now see it in the picture T the beginning of this video. It is in the picture of you at the beginning of this where the 3 types of granny square … it is the middle one that has a granny square in the left bottom of the square and rows on right and top. Reminds me of a log cabin type. I don’t know the name of it but would love the pattern. I tried to create it in my own but it wasn’t good. Thx for any help!!!!
The one in the middle is a mitered square granny square! At about 23:26 I go over how I make it work with this particular yarn (it takes some fudging around). The original tutorial I followed is at: tinyurl.com/ynzk7nwt - NOTE this tutorial uses UK terms...so you need to be sure you are using the terms that you are used to (US vs UK!)
I kept having the same issue with the same hook size you were using. My last round was the only one that came on point, and well, we need a tail. Lol. I love your trick of SS into back. Thats genuis. After being tired of froggin i began to cut it and do it normal. I could also never get that color you have. it's my favorite color combo. Im honestly glad it didnt work great because RH is like nails on a chalk board to me to crochet with, but now you've given me more projects to try so thank you for this. 😅 I wonder if its really all of us or their yarn is not all the same ?! Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I really appreciated the mitre square tutorial. I'm making my son one of these illusion blankets. ( Not using this yarn.) The african flower is gorgeous. ❤
I wouldn't be surprised if it is not the same consistently. It's obviously more "budget friendly" yarn and I'm sure production is just quick and dirty! I don't know if I would ever buy more after I'm done with what I have, but it was a fun experiment at least!
It sometimes gets dicey lol so I do have to be careful. But when it’s a small, light project like a square it’s great and makes the time pass! I tried a knit shawl once and it got a little long and heavy and things didn’t go as smooth. 🤣
Hi, I wanted to thank you for your African flower motif pattern, I decided finally to try it out over the weekend, and am quite happy with the results, so am super grateful that you were able to create this. I mostly used your method but also took some ideas from another channel who spoke about you, Agitha Creates, as her round 3 for some reason worked for me in terms of getting the yarn to last the whole round, so I now have some completed. Mine sort of went into a 3D shape even though I used a 7mm hook for a few of the rounds, but when I work it into a poncho that I'm planning on making that should help to flatten it out a bit. 🤞🏻 Was curious if you've done a sunburst flower also, I saw a tutorial for that last night that I want to make as well now, bit of variation. Are you excited for the new flower power yarn that came out yesterday? They're releasing a tutorial and pattern for it today. I feel like this yarn came about from them seeing people like yourself who used the original granny square yarn to create other pattern ideas, so I think you and a few others like you definitely were the inspiration, pardon the pun! 😉 Thanks 😊
Thank you for the kind words! I have not seen the flower power but just looked it up!! I have a feeling it’s going to be the same hit or miss type of thing where some people can get it and some won’t but I still think the concept is fun! I like seeing new things hit the market. I’ll definitely have to go get a skein or two. 😆
@@TheCATTLadyDesigns You're welcome, very deserving! I'm glad I let you know about the flower power yarn and look forward to your review on it. I agree that some will like it and some still won't, however I feel knowing that there have been some improvements after watching Mikey's review, as there are less colour changes that's a plus, and then knowing that they REALLY LISTENED and added more yarn to the last round is a huge incentive for me and I'm sure many others, as I know for most we were always running out of yarn in that last round, so that's great news!!
I knew this would be a challenge and it is frustrating. My first square isn't awful so far but not right. I will try your suggestions! Thank you for working on it and sharing! LOVE the violet!
Hope you got it to work out! I agree the yarn has been very polarizing - it either works great or fails miserably it seems, haha. I definitely tried my best to just make it work the best I could!
Honestly, I forgot about it until o just saw your reply, lol. I hurt my arm and put it aside. I have a picture of the square...it's not awful but it will bother me!
I had similar issues when I did my video. I did not think of doing the extra slip stitches but did add or subtract double crochets which was fine if it was one or two but one attempt called for me loosing six, that did not work. What was super frustrating was some rows I had too much and others not enough which was not consistent to be my hook size or pattern alteration. That last Motif you made was beautiful however.
Yeah I don’t feel like it’s consistent enough. I know my tension isn’t perfect every time - but sometimes my rows will line up perfect and the next time I’ll be short or have a ton left. lol. Each motif is like its own mini puzzle. Still goes pretty quick though so I’m okay with just winging it.
yes at the beginning I was having to do that do....not as much as I went along. However, now I haven't touched my African flowers for awhile....so I'm going to have to "relearn" the whole thing over again to finish them up!
Thank you for showing us alternatives and slst tricks. It looks like you yarn under instead of yarn over, could that be why you're left with longer runs? If so, I am going to try yarn under with regular yarn since it might be a yarn saver!
I didn't even know that was a think (yarn under/over). I just looked at some videos and I think I yarn over?? But I might do a weird combo with a yarn under to start? But now I may have to experiment again. 😂
So, my first thought for between color three and four on the mitered granny square is to turn the work, slip stitch back for half the remainder of the color three yarn, turn the work again, and slip stitch back to the corner. I think that might make that part a little too bulky though... Do you think it would work to pull the stitch you're on back a little ways, then slip stitch over that stitch until you reach the corner with the desired yarn color? I haven't bought any of this yarn, but I think I want to just to experiment with how to make it work!
It really is fun to experiment with! Just have to be in the right mindset. I think it would get a bit bulky doubling up the slip stitches. Not sure about the other method!!
Thank you for the video. That Red Heart Granny Square Yarn WHAT A PAIN IT IS! Love the African Flower will try it. Do you have a pattern for the Scarf you are wearing? And what yarn you used. Love it
I just found you when I was searching for ideas for a non traditional idea for this yarn. I got 3 balls for a great price off Amazon Canada. . Love the African flower you did. Not sure if this has been asked, but how did you put them all together? I am new to the hexis so looking for new ways to crochet them together. Thank you for any help!!
So I have not put them together yet, but I'm playing with the idea of zigzag stitching them on my sewing machine. I did a little mockup and sewed a few squares together to make a "fanny pack" - I talk about it in one of my later episodes. It worked out quite well! Still a little nervous of screwing something up but I don't know, the thought on not having to hand stitch all of those is very appealing!!! Otherwise my favorite join is a basic handsewn method where you grab the back loop of each stitch and sew them together. Looks very seamless and flat.
i found one gal that had the technique i was looking for with this product. Many techniques don't work well. I do like a magic ring, and she would start in a corner that she had just finihed on She wound just dc over the start chain three. For me i don't have enough yarn and have to frog to adjust to get good color change. Like tight tenson and by row three, 2 corner space, and even dropped double in a side. ugggh Color change works out. Im now ready to venture to CATT world now!!!!😀
I wish you did it according to directions to get an accurate review. I'm following directions exactly and sometimes it's perfect and other times not. Wanted to see if anyone else had same experience.
I’m guess I’m a tad confused? I did follow the basic pattern on the back of the band except for the chain 6. But it would never work out for me without slipping stitches. I tried larger hooks and it still didn’t work - would always fall short on the final round and the square looked awful anyways. I do show an example on my part two video of a square made with a 7mm hook and it didn’t work out. I’ve never gotten it to work out for a traditional square.
The original granny does have the ch4 and the ch3 in each corner. The magic circle is new to me however the granny square is what I made when I was 6 and will forever
Yes! But there are so many different ways that tend to be more popular these days I’m surprised they went with a very traditional style. It seems to have worked for some but not for all - but that would probably be the case for any technique!!
I’m not sure with this yarn. I did wonder about that myself since join as you go would be better! Or if you mean just one continuous square? You can but of course it’s just going to be a random assortment of colors and not consistent.
New sub here. So another crocheter kept encouraging to just leave extra yarn to back and keep going. She made several tote bags that looked good. I like that color. I don’t think their instructions are good, I just do them the way I know.
Hmmm that would be interesting. What would you do with all the extra in back? I mean if you aren’t seeing the back you could get away with leaving it funky!
I’m sure different hooks can potentially create different gauge!!! So many different things can contribute to gauge which makes this type of yarn a challenge!
Actually, there’s additional way to make a granny square is to change between each cluster. But it’s OK not to change between each cluster. Do it the way you like. I generally change between clusters, but I am making a baby blanket and not change between each cluster so the holes will be smaller, and I do like the way it looks. The great thing about our craft, is that there really is no right or wrong way to do things. Sure there is some things that we all learn to do first, but after that, do things the way that makes you happy. No sweat.
I feel red heart is being innovative but the $12 for one skein is a no thank you. I thought that the concept was that this WAS easier and streamlined so a new crocheter will be able to granny square. I will continue to weave in my ends I think 😊
I would definitely not pay full price for it! I do love the concept too but it seems to just fall short for being the end all be all answer they were going for!
I finally stick to a 2 single in the corner and no single between sides there are 2 rows in the middle that require a single between the sides and then if I have a little too much color left I will slip stitch to his it
So I bought this crazy yarn yesterday and after about six hours, total of working with it, I still can’t … I did 5 mm, 5 1/2 mm 6 mm. I think I need to have a smaller fuck because I keep running out of color ahead of time. I’ve tried training two and the quarters instead of three and not doing that extra chain in between the clusters. Nothing is working for me. I wanna try this one more day and then I’ll probably just going to use it for something else because it’s not worth the stress.
I’m so sorry for the stress!! This is supposed to be fun right?! I was determined to just use the yarn regardless. If still looks kind of cool just random too.
You have a problem solving brain. I would have either cut if it didn't make a round in one colour each time or shoved the ball in my scrap box. Thanks for showing us how to do what the yarn is supposed to do. For the second type have 2 chains between each cluster or even 3 chains to use up the extra yarn. My favorite was the last one. The African flower hexagon. Beautiful.
There’s gotta be a hook that would work at some point right?! I did use a boye 6.5mm and it just wasn’t comfortable to work with so I just had to make do with the clover! Those are my favorite to work with.
Thought it would be a fun way to make granny squares but instead it's annoying and stressful because based on my tention I need to use like 4 or 5 different sized hooks in the same square within the same rounds as well as doing and redoing rounds to line up. It's better then having to weave in all the ends of multiple skeins and only needing 1 skein for a multicolored square but if I had to pick I'd weave in all the ends and not worry vs taking forever to do one this way
I will probably end up using this yarn, whatever's leftover as self striping yarn or like multicolored yarn though do want to try using it for different types of squares to see if it works or if I can make it work
Yeah It's a bummer when it doesn't work out and I'm jealous of those who can get it to work everytime! I don't have to pull out rows EVERY time I make a motif.....but a lot of the times. lol. Still feel like for me it's faster than having to go back to secure/trim all the ends and wrangle the different balls of yarn!
Hi! I just posted a new video showing I can create the African violet in a square - it's not perfect but it's not too bad! ;) ruclips.net/video/-R79uvgy8gg/видео.html
The magic circle has only been a typical start over the past 5 years…. If you talk to any crocheter over the age of 50, they still never use a magic circle….
Still for a brand new yarn you’d think they would go for what is more popular these days. And honestly I’m sure you could still manage to work a magic circle or do a chain and join by just adjusting the size of the tail to start. Just make you it’s a longer tail if you plan to do the chains vs the magic circle!
If you go to the Yarnspirations site they have a couple patterns/examples of how it stripes! www.yarnspirations.com/collections/granny-square-patterns-round-up?Influencer_TCC&Red_Heart_All-In-One_Granny_Square

Can you share what you did differently?
@novaconetta1577 I measured the tail anywhere between 7 to 9 inches depending on skein they vary. I did magic loop and tighten the ring I only chain 2 at corners and I pull out the entire color I am working on in case I have to add a double crochet to the 3 double crochet in space. Hope that helps
@@Golden.5555 yes thank you for the tips
Enjoy !
Nice! 😊
I may have to try that! I have a hard time finding my ch1 space in the darker colors. 🤣
I mastered it using a 6, sometimes switching to a 5 mm hook.
Red Heart needs to hire you.
Ha! That would be fun to test out patterns and yarns for a living!!!
@@TheCATTLadyDesignsThank You for creating & sharing your alternate designs! I like a solid square, not the breezy kind 🤗
One comment to help, especially for newbies. I work with Red Heart yarn all the time. The more you pull it out, the more it will stretch. Your solution of sl st around to the next space if you did not use up all the color in the row, is a great one.
Interesting to know!! It is sometimes really compacted in there so yeah I can see how it can stretch out!
It’s intriguing. Love the African Violet motif. Thanks for the demos.
I’ve always wanted to do this motif and even though the yarn is fiddly - it’s so much easier than switching yarns every row! 🤣
I love how the African flower looks in this yarn. I may have to make a blanket like that.
Definitely recommend!
You’re a great teacher, Andrea, oh by the way…….thanks for showing this!
Aw thanks! It’s definitely more of a demonstration rather than tutorial. Haha. But hopefully it helps show some other options for this yarn!
Watching the granny Square one. Have you ever tried a chain one and then a half DC to join. It then puts you right in the middle of the corner so you can chain three finish that half a cluster and you just always end on that point.
I know this doesn’t really pertain to the all in one granny. But it’s my favorite way.
Ooh interesting. Have to remember that!
Thank you so much. I figured about the fudging part 😬. I had that figured out thx again.
😀
I am so happy to see other adaptations using this yarn - looks great! It makes me want to try the African violet pattern with this
I'm glad I could make something work because a square was just not quite working!! lol
thank you so much for showing how you made the African flower work with this yarn!
Love how your African violet motifs turned out. Look forward to seeing how your blanket turns out.
Thanks! I need to decide how I want to join all these guys!
Wow! Thanks for the video. I happened across it and I think the African flower does the yarn more justice. I will try one. 😁
Hope you can make it work out for you too!
I got this and I have been using the hook that they say to use 5.5mm crochet hook and mine are coming out . The size is right to love the colors to
Glad you are getting good results!
I love the African flower square, thank you for the different squares.
Thanks for checking them out!
it looks interesting, but i will try it when the yarn goes on sale.i like the way you say to not totally stress it, at the end of the day, it looks good anyway
Thanks for showing this. I’ve been curious if it really worked. If I can find it on sale, I might give it a try. 😊
Yeah once I stopped stressing about it and making something I liked it was pretty fun! I did enjoy the challenge overall too.
First time watching and I love this video, thank you.
Thanks for watching!
I do love the African Flower pattern that you were able to create. I've never seen it before but I do like to learn new. It's beautiful. ❤
But I do see the problems you and others encountered.
The flower totally makes me swoon each time I look at it!! It keeps me motivated to keep making them.
I love the African Motif in this color ! Now I want to buy this yarn. Thank you for the review!
Hope it works out for you as well! 😊
I think I will keep using up all my leftovers. Your experience, was what I had thought mine would be, if I tried. Many thanks
guess what it is january 7th i bought the granny square yarn on this day for $7.12 on sale, original price was 9.99 it will arrive in 2 weeks, i was excited about it, because everyone on youtube has been talking about it
Hope you get it soon and you have a good experience with it!
Im 30 granny squares in but how I love the flower motif! Thanks for sharing
Nice! What color did you get?
I am using it to knit a blanket.. but don't tell anybody LOL. I am using the Black Moody Cherry colorway and it is beautiful. It has 2 dominate colors with splashes of the other colors. I am using a US 10 needle size. I will be trying this with the White Green Scream colorway too.
I love the idea of just letting the colors stripe randomly in a large blanket! and on US10 it's gotta be going by a bit fast! (Sorry, late reply, been very chaotic lately!)
Great video on this yarn. The African flower looks very striking. I subscribed.
Thank you!
@TheCATTLadyDesigns - I really like the African Violet motif! Would you consider a tutorial on just the flower using the RH All-in-one? 🤗 ty
Hi! Towards the end of the video I demonstrate how I make it. Are you looking for something more detailed? I don’t go into how to make certain stitches so knowledge of the basics is necessary! Starts at 38:52. 😄
I really love that scarf on you. Not many can wear that color!
Thanks! I really needed something bright and cheery. It’s been so gray outside here!
I remember when using rh stripes to male an argyle blanket sometimes tou have to add an extra DC, or slip stitches or loosened/tightened the gauge.
It was worth the e tra woek in the end.
You'll figure out your tricks as you go. It's gonna be amazing
That’s what I thought too. Just make it work for me and it’s still gonna be way better than using multiple yarns and weaving ends!
The African Flower looks beautiful. I love the Green!
Thanks! It definitely makes me happy!!
I think i might use it just for color combos
I think they are fun and I kind of like not having to think about it.
These are really great ideas to use this yarn. ❤ I'm going to try that mitered square
Nice! What color were you thinking?
I will try the African flower 🌺
Thank you for the info
I hope you find something that works for you! At least with the African flower I don’t end up slipping too much now that I’ve figured out how my tension needs to slightly change each round. But sometimes it does end up being more than a “tails” length which is annoying!! But it was a fun experiment at least!
Spent all morning trying to get this yarn to work. Changed 5 different hooks, had to unravel them all. That being said, I just crochet at will. Everyone liked the look.
I still think it looks good that way too!!
The flower is so pretty! I need to know your “set up” for walking on the treadmill while crocheting!
The African flower turned out nicer than the grannies! Such a beautiful design!
Thank you! I just love it with the yarn colors specifically too!
Oh wow, you can walk on treadmill and crochet. I'm impressed.
It sometimes gets dicey lol so I do have to be careful. But when it’s a small, light project like a square it’s great and makes the time pass! I tried a knit shawl once and it got a little long and heavy and things didn’t go as smooth. 🤣
I'm attempting to make an African flower one...and checking in for that reason. I'm in love w the black cyberleaf colorway!
It’s definitely my favorite color of the bunch!!
Was curious if you've done a sunburst flower also, I saw a tutorial for that last night that I want to make as well now, bit of variation.
@Fatima81313 oh no! Hope your arm feels better asap!!
@@TheCATTLadyDesigns It's a little better...I'm starting PT this week. Thank you! :)
That color makes a beautiful hat. I have made two for charity.
I saw a hat in this color too and I loved it! I don’t want to cut into my flowers though so I’ll have to wait and see if there’s any extra! 😄
I soooo love African flower squares! I need to add some to the “learning crochet” blanket.
Ooh yes you should!
I think you did an amazing job
Thanks!
@@TheCATTLadyDesigns I am thinking about trying some planned pooling with what I have and see how that comes out.
@@Tinas_Workshop I would love to see what you come up with!! I’ve been messing around with it still seeing what other things I can do as well! 🤣
@TheCATTLadyDesigns if it works out well enough I will post the video
African flower is beautiful. Love it.
Thanks!
African flower looks way better than granny square, love this!
I think so too!
I find I have to do each row 3-4 times to get it to work. Your African flower is very nice.
yes at the beginning I was having to do that do....not as much as I went along.
I like first scare ,the green and black , it’s nice 😊
Thanks!
I used a 5 mm hook and chain one in the corners. No chain in between clusters and it works good for me.
So lucky! 5mm is my fav hook size to use for worsted yarn. I wish it could have worked out for me.
Thanks for your review.
Thanks for checking it out!
Thank you for the video. That Red Heart Granny Square Yarn WHAT A PAIN IT IS! Love the African Flower will try it.
Do you have a pattern for the Scarf you are wearing? And what yarn you used. Love it
Hi! Yarn is definitely a challenge. lol. Here is the link to the scarf: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-twinsies-shawl
Yarn is hand dyed :)
I love the African Flower motif.
😁
❤ love the African violets! I think I will try this!
Hope they turn out nice for you!
When I learned granny squares I did learn the chain 3 in corner with the chain between clusters
Yes! It is definitely a valid method, just seems not as popular these days and as a "newer" crocheter I didn't learn it that way.
Im now ready to venture to CATT world now!!!!😀
lol!! I love how everyone is trying new things to get it to work for them. It is a fiddly product that you need to have a really open mind with!!
All in One yarn works for a corner to corner granny stitch square as long as you use a J hook and half double crochets on the rim.
I think a C2C would look really fun. I’ve never done that method before but should really try!
Hi can you just do an on going blanket without stopping with separate squares? Thanks😊
@@TheCATTLadyDesigns long piece, cut, tie and weave in. Short piece take hook and pull yarn back, weaving in.
Brilliant!🎉
😁
From the videos I've seen for crocheting the square people you had to change the size of the hook a few times to make it line up correctly.
Yeah I thought about that but boy that would kind of get annoying too. Really didn’t want to have to do that. 😆
Yes the color lengths varies by ball and different balls of the same color
I mean I know it’s inevitable but it’s annoying. Haha!
Thank you for the video you have good ideas .
Thanks!
Alot of crochet videos I see people using the nicer hooks that have a rubber handle vs an metal crochet hooks. Maybe it affects the tension
No sweat.
Do what makes you happy!!! Always the best advice. ❤️
I finally stick to a 2 single in the corner and no single between sides there are 2 rows in the middle that require a single between the sides and then if I have a little too much color left I will slip stitch to his it
Whatever works right!?
The dark blue changing into the black I can't tell the difference between the two yarn colors
I notice this with a lot the colorways…too similar of colors next to each other. Not sure why they would do that but it seems intentional!
I’ve seen a few crochet moss stitch blankets with this yarn.
I can’t wait to see what people come up with. I saw a really cool striped hat (knit). I may make one with the bright orange/pink color I have.
It worked for me and i went with there deritions
Glad you got it to work for you! 😄 it’s so satisfying when it works.
Beautiful.
I was very determined to make it work out as best as I could. It was such a cool concept for yarn!!
I wonder if using the Boye size J may help since it’s 5.75mm and not 6mm or the Boye size I which is 5.25 and not the “normal” 5.5?
I made another video where I did just that! Made some stripe stuff and just random stuff. It still looks fun with all the different colors :)
I understand y you so much , I have a very hard time with the gage and it not fun
Yeah gauge can really be tricky and is so personal! Sometimes it’s impossible to match someone else’s!
I love your fliwer
Thank you!!
Could you make the african violet in a square?
As is - no - looking at how that works the flower needs 8 petals. I’ll play around with a pattern and see what I come up with!
Hi! I just posted a new video showing I can create the African violet in a square - it's not perfect but it's not too bad! ;) ruclips.net/video/-R79uvgy8gg/видео.html
I agree with you your stitches have to be loose at the beginning and tight at the end.
It’s a weird game you have to play to make it work. 🤣
The magic circle has only been a typical start over the past 5 years…. If you talk to any crocheter over the age of 50, they still never use a magic circle….
I disagree. I prefer to start my projects with a magic ring. Been using it for 15-16 years.
Still for a brand new yarn you’d think they would go for what is more popular these days. And honestly I’m sure you could still manage to work a magic circle or do a chain and join by just adjusting the size of the tail to start. Just make you it’s a longer tail if you plan to do the chains vs the magic circle!
I’m way over 50 I love the magic circle the circle actually closes😂
For the Octogenarian set, i use a magic circle 99% of the time. I am 81 and have been crocheting for more than 70 years
Do you know if anyone had tried to knit with it? I'm wondering how if stripes.
If you go to the Yarnspirations site they have a couple patterns/examples of how it stripes! www.yarnspirations.com/collections/granny-square-patterns-round-up?Influencer_TCC&Red_Heart_All-In-One_Granny_Square
The smell great guy made a stripped knit hat out of this yarn. He was happy with it.
@@mistyfan69 I saw that! I was thinking about trying that yarn for the sock arms sweater.
