    When you said "that hurts me" after reading how they make the granny square. I felt that in my soul. I prefer tight looking granny squares so I usually go down a size in hook size AND i like chaining 2 and starting with a magic circle. Ive managed to make it work fortunately. They sell this at jo anns now.

      I feel like they should have added like 4 more inches to the last color. Just to accommodate for weaving in the end. I find myself having to go down a hook size in order to have enough of that color to weave in.

    Your tension obviously relaxes as you speed along, since the the purple row, so you probably should have sized down a hook at that point on the first square. I think this yarn would be great for beginners using the exact pattern given and learning to control their tension and be consistent. It gives a great visual reference for whether they're being consistent. You're not used to having to follow a granny in a way that you don't normally do plus you magic circle start so it may not be a yarn you'll enjoy. (Just finished watching so wanted to say I'm so glad you kept at it! I agree, it makes very pretty squares and yay no ends except beginning and ending ones! LOL. It does require some inital adjustments but then you can really roll!)

  • @hookedandhemmed
    @hookedandhemmed 11 месяцев назад +76

      I had yarn like that. It was a bernat blanket yarn? Made like some kinda plaid print??
      Something like you had to do EXACTLY 15 sc for each color change. No more no less or it wouldn't work. Even said to go up or down a hook size if you weren't getting it exactly right. But that was it. Worked up really fast. Super soft. But the colors spotted something fierce. I mean. I got it as a gift and my cat decided it was his so. I can't complain lol but definitely wouldn't buy it unless it was on super sale.

    I was at Joanns today and heard a couple workers talking bout this yarn. From snippets of convo I caught it was clear they were talking bout the yarn. So I went up and said "you have to be talking about the granny square yarn. I saw Kelsie review it." I just thought it was cool that all I said was your first name and it was instant recognition!

    It’s amazing how much variation there is for each individual trying to get this yarn to work. I needed to use a 4.5 mm for the center row and then switched to a 5 mm for rounds 2-5. On rounds 4&5 I needed to tighten up my stitches but not so tight that I could go back to a 4.5 mm hook. I made sure that i had 3 inches of the 5 th color to tie off. Each skein gave me 15 blocks. With each block it got easier and I had 30 blocks done in a days time. I hate sewing in ends so this concept is awesome for me and if I can buy it on sale the hassle of tensioning is worth it.

But you know what they say about things seeming too good to be true. I love grannies too, but not keen on their pattern at all, and I like picking my own colour scheme. This yarn might be great for some people, but it's just not for me. The biggest turn off would be the constant pulling out rounds to adjust tension. That would seriously get on my nerves. I haven't tried this yarn, however I agree Red Heart varies in texture unfortunately, when I usually get it, it's pretty scratchy 😭 this idea is pretty cool, but it definitely has a learning curve, it seems.

    Hi! you are the first to go in depth with this yarn! and I really enjoyed your review ! And the fact you completed all the skeins you bought is awesome 😊Thank you! I enjoyed it! For the granny square yarn I found that if I use the 5.5 and then with the excess yarn I slip stitch until I hit the next color. You can't tell and I never have to worry about running out of yarn with the larger hook.

    Very interesting! I've seen this yarn popping up around and it actually makes me wonder what it would look like used in a project other than a granny square. I might have to try it and yes, it made me want to buy some. I love the blue/pink/black color combo.

    When I saw this yarn I was really excited but also doubtful of how it would work out. Thanks for making this review, I love that you are very honest too! I will try to get my hands on this yarn in the future for sure.

    I actually really like this yarn. I was a little nervous but I’m so happy. It’s like $7.12 at Joann Fabric. I’m thinking I need more lol. I also didn’t even look at the pattern included. I did a ch4 and a sl st then a ch5. No ch in between spaces and ch2 in the corners. And I used a 6mm hook. I had so much fun playing with this!!

    I’ve used this yarn for 4 projects now. You do have to fudge a little here and there. If you adjust the cluster size to 2dc or 4dc clusters here and there, it is less notable than the colors bleeding together.

    The crochet crowd has a tutorial on RUclips for that yarn. You need a 4inch tail when you start. I haven't tried it yet but I think the tutorial should be accurate. Looks like you figured it out. 👍🤗

    I am so glad you made this video! I love making Granny Squares, they are my go to project!
    Like you, I do not chain one between my clusters, and I only chain one on my corners. I will not make my squares any other way, I prefer the tighter look of the square.
    I have been wanting to get this yarn, but I am skeptical about the color changes matching up with the way I crochet my squares.
    Good to know I can probably make it work if I finagle with the yarn.
    I hate weaving in ends so much so, I usually only use variegated yarn to make my squares look colorful but no actual yarn changes.

    I’m glad the yarn ended up working for you in the end, it seems frustrating and not like an idea that would really work but with practice it turned out ok. At first I was surprised you bought so many skeins I was like “try it first before you spend $60 on yarn!” 😂 but I’m glad you used the rest of the yarn and showed us!

    I had to go down to a 4.5 for the first 4 rows and a 4 for the last to make it work. I have loose tension though. I did follow their pattern.

    HA! Calling yourself lazy with a TALL STACK of recently finished granny squares, worked up at lightning speed! certainly not lazy! I could see how changing colors would slow down the flow quite a bit. I'm new to crochet, it's a whole new world. Thanks for the vid!

  • @13ellamy
    @13ellamy 11 месяцев назад

    the struggle of having the right amount for the first couple rounds and then you keep running out on the last two is VERY relatable. for mine, i've taken to using one hook size for the first three rounds, and then actually going down a size for the last two. you can definitely tell that the last two rounds' DCs are shorter, but... that's the best way that i've made it work for me

    I enjoyed your review on this yarn and love your enthusiasm. I was also struggling with my gauge. I went as high as a J hook and did not want to go any higher. My square was very loosey. After frogging the square, I started from scratch. I use an H/8 5 mm hook. I use the magic ring/circle, I use the stacked single crochet (Marlybird’s technique). The way I make my squares, (Sara Sach says: do what works for you), I am very happy with this yarn and yes, I will be buying more of it in the future. We each have our preferences to techniques that we use and I think with small adjustments, it does indeed work out in the end. Review well done.

    I just bought some! It took me 11 tries before I got it to work for me. I used the pattern they provided in the label, and I used a 5.5 with tight tension

    Thank you so much for this awesome review! You covered a lot of questions I had about the yarn. I had just bought 1 skein of it to try, since the colors are still low/out of stock. I just wanted to say, thanks for your honesty reaction to the label pattern. 😂😂😂 It was gold! And pretty much my reaction as well! Lol! 3 chains in the corner space, really?!?! This has been super helpful, thanks!

    There’s a pattern called Spun Gold, a fingering weight shawl pattern that uses one skein of yarn. It relies primarily on sc and really tall stitches. To keep tension the same on those rows of really tall stitches, I was changing hooks sometimes two or more times within the row. Sure, it was a pain, but it is one of my favorite shawls.

    It all depends on your tension and hook size etc.. I tried a few different hooks, followed the directions, but I found what worked for me is
    5mm hook
    2 ch in corners , no ch between clusters. I still have to undo and re adjust my tension sometimes.. and I join the colours with a hdc in the corner, so I start with ch3 and then only do 2 more dc in the corner then 3 in each etc.. I like crocheting more than I like weaving in ends, so undoing a half round or even a full round it’s still better than all the ends 😂 oh and I steam blocked mine ..
