I don’t want to Jack the comment section. However, Anna made a comment that instantly struck me. I sadly lost my mom and brother young. (My dad still provided me a loving, healthy, upbringing) The point for bringing this up is, I used to go on pages and groups for people who lost a sibling suddenly/tragically/without warning. A young lady shared a story that I have continue to live by. She named it “wear the dress “. She stated that her and her sister were going to be in their uncles wedding. They had these beautiful flower girl dresses that her sister always begged to wear. She wanted to wear it to the playground/school/riding her bike. Lol. Her mom would tell her, no. You need to save it until the wedding. (Which I do understand) Heartbreakingly, her sister was struck by a vehicle and lost her life. Her sister was buried in that dress, and it was the only time she ever got to wear it. This young lady said from that moment on whenever she wanted to do or wear anything, her mom would say “wear the dress”. I know this is a sad story. I just really wanted to emphasize the importance of wearing what you love. If you feel like getting dressed up and want to go grocery shopping in a ball gown and full make up, do it. If you bought an expensive bottle of perfume, and only wear it for “special” occasions, spray away. We have a weird habit of saving our favorite things, instead of wearing them. From the bottom of my soul, I pray you all live long, healthy lives, as I am sure you all will. Yet, life is still short. Celebrate every day for the blessing it is. My children are now teenagers. However, they would go to school dressed as a Power Ranger, go to doctors appointments in Darth Vader costumes, where a necktie and a blazer over their sweatsuits to soccer practice, etc. 😂 So wear what you feel good in. If that dress makes you feel amazing, wear it to the pharmacy. We all deserve to feel happy, confident, and beautiful, everyday, not just on special occasions!
Sorry for such a long comment.

For your Part 10, mistakes I've made:
Don't just always buy black shoes and belts and jackets because "black goes with everything." It took me a long time to figure out that it doesn't. There are outfits that look all wrong with black shoes. If I had things to do over, I'd make sure to have a few lighter neutrals in the mix as soon as I had more than one of anything.
Take really good care of the clothes you have, whether you paid a lot or a little. A wrinkled designer blouse with missing buttons doesn't make you look well dressed. Quit procrastinating on hemming the skirts and pants legs to the right length.
Trinny Goodall's Closet Confession videos show what it means to respect H&M purchases as you would a Stella McCartney piece: they're cleaned and hung OCD-impeccably. It's usually hard to tell which pieces in her outfits were inexpensive.

Thanks Anna. Some very important tips!
Washing: I have a handwash cycle on my washer which I LOOOOOOVE. (I used to actually hand wash a lot.) I wash other things on delicates and put almost nothing in the dryer. Cold water, medium or low spin. I have pieces that are 30 years old and are back on trend. It's totally worth it.
Playing dress-up: I love doing this. I just spent a couple of hours culling for giving away and discovered some sensational outfits by combining things I never thought to combine before. It's really worth doing. I kind of go down a fashion rabbit hole and make it so much easier to get dressed in a hurry.
And yes, plan!!!! Start with your shoes if you are gonna be on your feet, walking or dancing, or standing at a party.
Outer Layers: I live in Toronto which, although warming, is cold for a good 6-8 months a year. I have an embarrassing number of coats and jackets, scarves, hats, gloves, boots.... I think of my outer layers the way I think of my "indoor" clothes. They too are outfits!
If you think baby belly is an issue, brace yourself for menopause. That said, I'm 72 and I refuse to fall into the "old lady" trap of capris or leggings and ugly tunic tops. I'm with you on highrise. I belt. (I have a belt wardrobe that I have collected over the decades.) I accent my waist as best as I can. People comment on my waistline! Haha. It's an illusion.
    Basics. Yes. Yes. Yes.
    Thanks again!!!

I am almost 70 years of age and I still love playing dress up with my wardrobe and do this very often. It helps me avoid last minute frustration when putting an outfit together before walking out the door. I also discovered by taking a photo of finished look, it gives a more realistic perspective than just depending on the mirror image. In addition, I found that putting an index card on certain items in the closet, listing items to pair it with, is a helpful reminder of what looks best with this particular item. Listing items that complement that item including shoes and accessories, really eliminates a lot of confusion. Planning outfits for the week takes a lot of pressure off, although, oftentimes I will resort to something else at the last minute. My planned fashions for the week are more of a suggestion as opposed to a hard fast rule. I have so many clothes, that by utilizing these two practices, I am more likely to wear a more variety of items. It is so easy for me to resort to the same few outfits over and over, neglecting or forgetting about the many other great treasures in my closet. Hi, my name is Mona and I am a clothes-aholic…🥴

I love that these are general things we learn as we grow that transcend trends. One mistake I've made in the past (and sometimes still make now) is not making sure this thing I'm about to buy will go with more than one thing in my wardrobe. And at the other end of the spectrum, I found that a capsule wardrobe was SUPER-boring after a while, and really hard on the clothes. Happiness is somewhere in the middle!😆

  • @kcbarbo78
    @kcbarbo78 8 месяцев назад +1

I can relate so much to a lot of these. A major one is buying things without considering if/when I would ever wear them - I bought so many occasion, evening pieces simply because they were pretty - full-length silk dresses, heavily beaded dresses, etc - that just sit in storage bins that I open only when I get a wedding invitation. I’ll never be able to wear all of them. I also bought so many synthetic fabrics that I’ve been replacing over the past few years with quality staples in natural fibers - cashmere, merino wool, organic cotton, silk, leather, linen, etc. I started shopping excessively in my 30s after spending most of my 20s in college and law school and traveling, so when I finally had a proper job and started making money, I guess I tried making up for lost time, lol. I’m a lot more careful now and think more about quality and not being wasteful. Right now I’m guilty of saving the designer bags I spent years obsessing over and which I purchased for ridiculous sums of money and carrying them only on “special occasions.”

Best thing I've learned from watching your videos and some of the other RUclipsrs: get an idea of what you need, and start shopping and buying from that list. That has been *so* helpful. The capsule wardrobe videos have been such a game-changer for me. When I went back to work at age 60+, I had no idea how to get dressed to go to work these days -- what exactly *is* "business casual"? I've learned so much. Now I'm the one who gets complimented all the time by colleagues -- and students!! -- for my outfits.

I no longer stress in the morning trying to find something, iron it, etc. I put aside two hours every Sunday, I check my schedule and the weather for the week, I then mix and match different things until I have outfits/shoes/bags/accessories picked for every day, I then steam/iron everything and hang them on one of them small hanging wardrobe things. Lol. (I got on Amazon for $35) Now every morning I go right to that and everything is waiting. My day starts easy which impacts my mood and the rest of my day. Thanks for sharing your story. I definitely wish I was taught this younger. You clearly have a smart, caring mother.

The decades-long drought here in California finally convinced me to stop washing my clothes after every short wearing. My clothes now look just as clean, but a lot less worn out and faded. I do a lot of spot-cleaning, brushing, steaming and airing with a fan on, instead of just automatically chucking everything into the wash. My ex one time re-laundered (on high water level) and machine dried a single, clean shirt because it got wrinkled when he changed his mind about wearing it and didn’t hang it back up! No wonder we all needed to reform our water use. (For this problem, I just spritz the wrinkles with some water and put it in the dryer for a few minutes, or put it in the dryer with my next wet load. But, more lately, I stopped tumble-drying clothes altogether, unless I deliberately want to shrink something, lime cotton pants to be hemmed. Might as well save gas and electric, as well as water).

One regret I have from my 20s, was not have much fashion sense:
Early 20s---Instead of a purse, I often lugged around a backpack even when I wasn't in class!
I worked at Eddie Bauer, where we had to wear khaki bottoms and denim tops, so I wore these pleated khaki pants (yikes!), and to top it off, I paired it with a button shirt without even bother to knot the front.
I also didn't pay much attention to classics, and gravitated towards funky items such as tops with ladybugs printed all over (lol!) or green lipstick.
Later 20s---Wearing flipflops when I wasn't around a beach or pool. It might have been the style back then, but just no!
Wearing sandals after Labor Day. I still ignore this rule, depending on the weather, but I was wearing those at a job interview.
Only giving myself enough time in the mornings to shower before work, so I would throw on a shapeless turtleneck sweater with grey trousers. Bonus part was sporting a jaw-length bob. Yeah, I probably looked so chic (sarcasm).

I am very glad that I have you by my side with my current mistakes and can always learn something. Thank you so much (and wearing extra earrings today for special occasions 😉 ). Greetings from the 🇨🇭

When I was in my 20's with zero money .. I purchased a rain/trench coat for cooler weather. I thought it was so versatile because it had a heavy lining that could be removed ~ and while wearing it one day, I recall two gals making fun of me (within ear shot) for wearing it when it wasn't raining.

great video, love it! funny ... in the mid 80s, sebastian hair brand came out with an eyeshadow palette that was about 14"x14" with almost 100 colors - all extremely vibrant and saturated. i would get read to "go out to a club" and think, how many of these colors can i wear at once?! lolol, ha those were the days, thanks for the reminder. second comment, hahaha i still purchase things and hold them, i've even done it to the extreme, waiting for a *special* occasion to wear the fab dress or fab shoes and then ... maybe only wore it once because it was off trend or the weather changed slightly {i'm in florida too}. thank you for taking time to make these videos. :)

This was a great video, Anna, thank you. I can definitely say that I don't have enough decent, everyday clothes but I'm working on fixing that.
I also have this problem of trating some clothes and jewelry of mine like they are museum pieces and I don't wear them like I should. It doesn't help me where I live in Southern California. Not too many people I see really dress consciously for everyday wear. Gymwear is everywhere and men wear long shorts and sandals no matter what the weather is. My work means scrubtops and comfortable pants similar to scrub pants but they're stretchy.
So there you have it, I'm uninspired by what I see around me. Your videos bring inspiration. I'm going to try to wear my museum pieces a few times each month I hope, it's a start!! :)

I live in Texas. I tend to wear sleeveless shirts and shorts or jeans. I’m a comfort over fashion with 4 kids from 9-3. I tend to wash clothes that stink or I cleaned in. Word of advice, have a selection that you clean in (don’t mind if it is raggedy), have another for special occasions that can be dressed up or down, and a everyday outfits. I don’t buy oversized clothes. I can’t stand something that makes me look like a barge like maxi dresses. If I don’t like the look then I’m not wearing it out. If I can’t please me then I’m not pleasing anyone else. I’m a full hourglass so showing off the waist is always a plus for me. Know your body type before shopping around.

In my 20s I used to “be on” all the time, I mean head to toe on. Even when I went through a depression I would be dressed to the 9s. I remember running errands and a friend asked me to stop by. She was doing a photoshoot at her house and she asked me to take a photo with her. I had on a black stressless drew, heels and my hair and makeup were done. It was totally unplanned but I stayed ready!
Then the psych meds I was on caused me to gain weight and I didn’t know what to do. I started to cover myself and didn’t always wear flattering clothes.
I’m now in my 40s and I’ve learned to dress comfortable, cute casual. My feet and ankles aren’t what they used to be after years of running around in heels and doing distance running. So yes cute and comfort must be aligned.
    Thank you Anna!

And everytime I know that I have a party or a dinner coming I think about my outfits and try them on so I don’t make that “I was in a rush and just thrown something on me” mistake 🤭

I love playing dress up with my clothes - and if I find something that really looks good I'll take a photo of it. When I travel, I do this so I remember how I was going to put certain things together (when you're packing the minimum amount of clothes). The coat thing is interesting - I don't work, so don't really need a dressy business coat, but living in the Boston area, my main criteria is that it be warm! Hard to find really stylish and warm. I think the thing that has taken me longest to get on board with, is ignoring the size on the label, and just buying something that fits, and is comfortable (slow learner!).

I love watching your videos. I watch a lot of fashion and makeup for mature women content and have found that many contributors say the same things, which is to be expected, right? I have to say that I would rather hear fashion content from you than just about anyone because your personality and sense of humor are so fun for me. I love it when you sneak in an occasional family picture or video, especially when it is comical, but I am taking a long time to say that you do an awesome job and I am glad I found your videos! On a side note, in some videos I have seen you wearing a chain belt with, I think, three strands of chain going across the front. Is it by any chance something that is still available? I have looked on Amazon and found something similar but thought I would check with you just in case you have a source for this belt.

My grandmother always used to tell me to stop wearing such baggy clothes bc eventually I would fill them out (said to me during middle school in 1992-the beginning of glorious hip hop clothes like TLC and Salt-N-Peppa). Now that I have fulfilled that prophesy, I understand to just wear what fits and get alterations done.
Also, I have been waiting for YEARS for low-rise to come back! At 4' 10", anything high rise is out of the question bc it LITERALLY goes around my rib cage. Yes, even the petite. Bought my first pair of low-rise a month ago and they cover my belly button. Thank goodness they're back!!

I go through my wardrobe when the seasons change in NJ. Gives me the chance to “try on and play” with my clothes.
I work in a medical group at a military base. Long stressful but rewarding days. Planning my outfits for the week is crucial for me.
Also, I’ve been getting away from “saving things for a special occasion”. My mom passed away almost nine years ago. She had so much stuff (jewelry, shoes, perfume, clothes, etc) for those special occasions. Life isn’t a guarantee to get to those events. Use the things that bring you joy. ❤🎉

Hi Anna..my favorite video of yours. I am sure I have done them all. In my young days I too, was only concerned about what I wore out. I worked with older ladies who dressed up for work and even though we did not wear jeans back then to work I did not have nice basics and did not care if I looked good forvwork.. Some of my money shoukdvhave gone to work clothes. I would love to have your great figure and glad you now know HeybI look pretty darn good. When I went to work in my forties with a lot of young gorgeous girls who I loved and think they loved me, I was given a framed picture of the girls and me. I was shocked and dismayed they gave me that picture. I hated it. I was not as tall or thin, and I was older and weighed more than them. Recently, I found that picture and I liked it. I didn't look that bad and thought it a honor that they gave it to me. I still keep I touch with all of them. My big mistake which you probably did not make is I would go to the clearance racks and buy items that did not go with anything I owned. for work. They were cute, but did not end up getting worn. I love all of your great clothes now. You are very stylish !!!

When very young is the time to try out silly fads. The only down side is fast fashion turning the occasional garment to an addiction with the help of Tik Tok and social media in general. Many young people are growing up never knowing what quality looks and feels like.

@@marye813 That is SO true. Another influencer here on YT gave some great advice a few weeks back - go to stores you can't afford and try things on anyway. You'll get to know what quality fabric looks/feels like and what good construction and finishing details look like. If nothing else, it can really help you decide which blazer to buy at the consignment store or which investment piece is worth your hard earned savings during the end-of-season sales....
