    3/4 sleeve is for practical reasons. Washing dishes, cleaning, etc. Busy women save time they don’t have to pull up the sleeve all the time

    3/4 sleeves are great if you are in water alot...... im a hairstylist and hate when my sleeves slide down and get wet or drag across a clients face. To short of sleeves has a client looking at the arm pits. It is a delicate balance getting dressed!

    Cowl necks and turtle necks work so well for me because I have a long thin face and and long skinny neck. I immediately feel prettier and a little sophisticated when I put one on.

    3/4ths are actually great and practical in warmer regions for spring and autumn, because these seasons are unstable and we tend to sweat and feel annoyed by the fabric on our wrists if its midday and we are wearing long sleeves and we are out running errands. I live in Greece and 3/4 sleeves are in every lady's wardrobe

    I own some 3/4 sleeve tops, shirts and blouses. For some reason a short sleeve is sometimes too cold and I just feel a need to cover my elbows. I agree they’re annoying as heck when it comes to putting on a layer over them as the sleeves ride up. But at work I remove the jumper and it feels just right. Serves a purpose for some.

  • @angieb.6868
    @angieb.6868 10 месяцев назад +8

    I like the 3/4 length sleeves. I don’t have to always push my sleeves up. I know you said the ones with the stiff fabric and a button, but I never consider those because the buttons get caught on things.
    I also think any tennis shoes with long cardigans and wide leg jeans kinda look on the frumpy side. The long cardigans itself feel like bath robes. I see them on other women and can look stylish if not too long. I live in the SW and I know locations, weather, & climate, influence styles. I also try to thrift for styles that look good on me as much as I can so I am not contributing to waste. Thanks. 😊

    I love that you used the test, "I could do better.". I also use the test, "Would I reach for this first" when choosing my BEST available outfits. Eventually what I don't reach for has to go .
    The color and value contrast of the first chunky sweater bothered me, but if it had been dyed darker, it might have been cute over a flowy print midi skirt or a trim denim maxi. You are so right about shoes making the difference.
    At 66yo, I ❤ 3/4 sleeves to
    1. Cover calcium deposits on my elbows and, 2. show off bracelets/watches. But most of all, 3/4 sleeves stay dry as I am washing dishes every 90 minutes when I am home. It is a solution for looking my best when doing housework and not letting the sink fill with dishes because I don't want wet, stained sleeves. It's my step up from sweatpants and bleach-stained tops. Dressing better at home makes a huge difference in how I feel about myself.
    Being retired, I also reacted to COVID social changes by dressing MUCH BETTER for mundane activities like going to the grocery store. BUT dressing better feels like people that I casually run into treat me better. I also treat myself better and go out to eat more often when I am doing errands. I also make more last-minute social plans when I bump into friends and neighbors unexpectedly because I am already presentable. Big FOMO reduction.
    So, thanks for helping me fine tune my FRUMP-O-METER!

    Showing the waistband so much enhances the proportions that showing a little belly or bottom curve is insignificant. Tucking in, at least in front, or wearing shorter tops is the most flattering for any shape. Our tummies don’t look big to others, we are looking down at them, pushing them out and obsessing over them, that’s all. Women’s bodies are supposed to have curves.

    Yay! Good video!! Two things I like to do in order to avoid looking or feeling frumpy are
    1. Wear a belt! Even if it feels weird at first, a thin black or brown basic belt can go a very long way for an entire look. When I figured this out it changed my whole wardrobe. It also helps us 40 somethings to keep our trendy outfits classy and not look like our teenage daughters. Even though we actually share a wardrobe lol.
    2. If I wake up and absolutely must choose frumpy (freezing cold, pouring rain, menstrual issues) then I will commit to a frumpy outfit but do extra with my hair and makeup. Instead of wearing my hair straight I’ll curl or wave it. And with my makeup I’ll do more thank blush and mascara, I’ll do my eyes up a little.

    • @TheMary0831

      And some people think they can't wear a belt if they are not thin. I disagree. One of the managers I work with is heavy, and she will belt a dress or a blazer and look amazing. I think if you're heavy, a thinner belt is better. But you can do it!

    3:20 honestly: I think the main issue with this sweater is that you don’t really “pull it off.” Because you have a very classic vibe, so quirky-edgy styles look like a costume or try too hard on you. Whereas inexplicably, I look stiff and awkward, somehow almost frumpy(!) in a white button down. But this sweater here, I promise you, I would get so many compliments in this. I truly think “frumpy” really relates to this issue more than anything else.

Like, I'm saying, " Hello, let me show you exactly how big my tummy is by picking my top up in the middle and letting it drape down on each side of my protruding belly 😂. But, if the tuck is off to the side a little, then the hem of the top falls diagonally across the tummy, which takes the emphasis off of it.

    I think a lighter coloured jean (and fitted - the change you made already) might make the sweater feel more like part of an ensemble too which would make it look less frumpy. Not a pale denim, but something like a mid tone leaning teal to pull from the teal in the sweater. White jeans would also ROCK with this sweater imo, and in that case probably any kind of fit. I also think having some jewellery helps a lot, but you did that already from the start 😊

    Hi Anna! I’m in my late 20s and just finished grad school in the spring, and I had been struggling to figure out how to dress more professionally! I have been loving your videos, and I feel far more confident and stylish than ever after following your advice! I do have an oddly specific reason for loving the 3/4 sleeves. I am a professional musician, and my instrument is the French horn. That instrument is played by holding one hand inside the bell, and oftentimes long sleeves (even pushed up!) can really muffle the sound. When I can I try to wear sleeves that stop just above the wrist or even the elbow. Just thought you might appreciate that random tidbit! Thanks for another great video 😊

    I truly believe that in a few years, everyone's going to be saying the front tuck is out. LOL Either tuck it ALL in or leave it all out. Front tucking is going to be dated soon. Also, 3/4 sleeves are pretty classic, especially in a 1950s way.

    • @ANNAREID29
      @ANNAREID29  10 месяцев назад

      I agree with you.. somewhat.. The front tuck came around because women didn’t want to tuck their shirts in all the way, and also didn’t want to leave them completely out, so what do you do? What do you think will replace the front tuck?

    • @eiremerald
      @eiremerald 10 месяцев назад +2

      @@ANNAREID29 I tend look back over fashion history to find what's "classic" and exists over multiple eras. Commonly, looser tops are tucked (or sometimes belted) and fitted ones can be left out. The exception would be banded bottoms, which I think may have a revival at some point. For fitted tops, it's a little easier if they are the "right" length for your body proportions. Being plus- sized, I don't usually tuck tops into pants, but do in loose skirts, but that's just personal preference. I tend to prefer my tops more fitted, but I did sorta "tuck" one side of a lightweight loose top into my jeans pocket recently and it wasn't too bad. I've just found that tucking heavier weight fabrics seems to add bulk on the sides. It'll be interesting to see what happens in the future. 😀

    12:00 if your whole shirt comes up when you raise your arm, it’s because the cut of the sleeve at the armhole is bad. It has nothing to do with being 3/4 length. When the whole shirt fits properly everywhere (including the armhole), the sleeves look glorious. Here’s a little secret: the further you’re away from a B cup (industry pattern standard), the worse the shirt will fit everywhere. To fit the bust, you end up buying larger shirts (this increases the drop shoulder). The more drop shoulder you have, the worse the fit is around the arm hole. If you look at women’s clothes from the 1800s (excluding the off the shoulder styles), the armholes were cut really close to the body. They had more arm range than our modern clothes. For example, even if you tailor a suit jacket, because the cut of the sleeve head is elongated bell shaped, it won’t let you raise your arms. That’s why sports blazers exist. The cut of the sleeve is different.

    Why dump on 3/4 sleeves then PULL YOUR LONG SLEEVES UP TO A 3/4 LENGTH ON YOUR ARMS?
    Why dump on high -low tops then do a front tuck?
    Trends have to make sense to me.

      I don't particularly care for three quarter sleeves, but I always roll my long sleeves up. I don't know what the difference is. Way back in the dinosaur era when I was a kid, three quarter sleeves were very chic and I don't know why that changed.

    You’re a good teacher, the fact that you show the difference of what looks good and what doesn’t is really important. I always play in my wardrobe and try things on and then when they look good I make a note or take a picture that way when I want to get dressed I know what to wear. It seems to me you like a big bold pattern. I don’t have any patterns in my wardrobe except stripes. I am very minimal.😊

    Also at home, a rolled up sleeve is annoying when I’m doing housework as they will unroll at the most inconvenient times, like when my hands are covered in flour/pastry or the ends get wet. That’s my reason. In winter though I will switch to long sleeve.

    My outfit is always very important to make me feel pretty and confident. Clothing is not at all trivial, even for men who say they don’t care, they do, a lot! Every ancient people designed and decorated their clothing to look beautiful, as well as to fulfill their practical needs, it’s just part of being human. I loved the recent YT video, The Lady in Silk, which shows the original, and carefully reconstructed, well-preserved outfit of an ancient (dessicated/mummified) Central Asian lady, her outfit is both practical and beautiful! The hand-woven decorative-banding in pastel colors, natural-white silk gown and robe, wool under-trousers, and wool and fur boots are just amazing (personally, I would have put a silk lining in those woolly trousers). Of course, in those days they didn’t have to stress about avoiding synthetic fibers like I do, everything came from nature, not a petroleum refinery. Interestingly, they use scraps or patches of the same fabric to construct garment details as needed, and because they match, it doesn’t look too bad. When all textiles were laboriously made by hand, nothing was wasted.

    PRINT FRUMP-O-METER: I need help in discerning between fresh modern prints and FRUMPY PRINTS. Also need help discerning between vintage choices that come across as curated and intentional vs. accidental, awkward and unaware. I have donated a ton of print tops that seem tired and FRUMPY to me, but I also feel very attracted to some newer water-color-style prints. I have plenty of solids in my wardrobe and iI feel adventurous about adding some prints. BUT, which ones won't look frumpy?

    I love your channel so much and how you show the before & after examples and pictures. I especially LOVE and find it SO helpful when you showed us the tight top & tight skirt you used to wear (which did look pretty cute on you;) But then when you showed us the looser top pair with the same skirt, I immediately saw the difference. So much more “less teen” and more stylish sophisticated!
    I actually snap pictures to keep in my inspiration fashion album! Then, since I’m poor at the time, and trying to transition and elevate my style from young adult to adult I then try to follow your tips and match prices within my budget. I really hate having a budget! And I absolutely love the wide leg jeans listed so although I think $200 isn’t really unreasonable for a pair of jeans I’ll wear for years, $200 at this time is, buy jeans or pay my cell bill. Sadly, that’s been a choice I’ve actually considered!
    For now while learning on a budget I tend to stick to Amazon bc it’s easy, one stop shop, fast, can be less expensive, and with a lot of exchange’s I can find good pieces or pieces that if only last a season, it’s ok! One thing I took from this video is cowl necks (or sweater dresses, actually a lot of the time sweaters in general bc I’m only 4’11) I love them so much on models & have tried for years to wear, paired with tighter legging follows the rules, right? Wrong, for me. So, it kinda hurts my heart a little but this is a piece that is just never going to look non-frumpy on me, at 4’11, and post COVID weight at 130 vs my normal 120, it’s just too much material for me. Ok, I’ve admitted it. It’s in writing! I don’t even like turtle necks bc I think it highlights the fat under my chin and just isn’t flattering on me. They cut me off… is maybe how you say that. Vs a v-neck that helps elongate me… yes, did I get that right?
    I have been super drawn to the oversized yet still fitted (or maybe structured) mock neck look with maybe leather leggings or a slim bottom. But oversized is so relative with my shorty 4’11 height! And I get very stuck on the whole having to elongate as much as possible! One thing you’ve gotten me addicted to that I really appreciate & love are the button down blouses! These look good on me and are versatile m. Ugh, fashion is really hard and expensive, following the new trends you like every season, the trial & error & figuring out how to wear on your body type. In addition, the 10ish post COVID pounds are killing me & throwing me totally off even the outfits I know I used to love. Wow! Sorry, that was long and all over the place. If anything comes to your mind on wearing the oversized look and how to deal with 10 extra pounds at 4’11, while reading this, I cherish your thoughts & advice!! Thank you!!

I was definitely a young adult trying to go to adult at one point and feel you! You asked about 3/4 sleeves? Stretch fabrics are the key. I wear them a lot, as I am 5'11" and it's very hard to find sleeves the proper length. This gives me some wiggle room, and shows of my slimmer wrists vs thicker upper arms.
    I don't understand why you said it was an unflattering length to cut a cuff to, but flattering to push a sleeve up to? Can you clarify?

    - A plain white stylish short-sleeve t-shirt
    - A plain white stylish tank top t-shirt
    - A plain white stylish long-sleeve t-shirt
    I’d like ideas of retailers that are higher end than the Amazon options (I have all those and they are great!!), but I want those staples for wearing under a nice cardigan, etc.
    I had a J.McLaughlin which was lovely, and an Ann Taylor that was 10+ years old, but they yellowed as expected after so long.
