When I was a little girl, my ballet dance teacher gave me the best advice. She said "Good posture will always make your clothes look better. Stand up straight, shoulders down, chin up and pretend someone is pulling you from the top with a string." When we age, we tend to slump forward and lose that youthful bounce in our step. I may move a bit slower now but I sit and walk with regal purpose.
The first time I consciously lifted my chest and shoulders from being rolled down and forward, I was breathless and exhausted at the end of the day. It was basically isometric exercise. The muscles between my ribs especially had shortened from being in the wrong position for years which affected my breathing. Now it's not an effort but I do occasionally have to remind myself.
Absolutely! However, by my experience, today is not easy to find clothes that fit to a nice posture. It takes me trying on dozens and dozens of jackets that I can put on my dancer body: they only fit if I slump, lift my shoulders and force them forward - I look and feel like a gorilla 😂 But if I stand straight, the cut is really awkward. Just look at all the mannequins in the shops, horrible posture everywhere.
She did a video How to Wear Scarves a few years ago. Dozens of other youtube channels with scarf tying, too. It boggles the mind! Yet I wind up doing the same two or three versions.
I had a great wardrobe audit for this summer. I lost 52# and had to begin with a new wardrobe. I've been making carefully curated purchases, building my new wardrobe from scratch! It's been a lot of fun!
How many women with menopausal belly can tuck in their shirt without looking like an idiot??? I think that tuck in only the front is ridiculous. Just like pulling all your hair over to one side. Looks really weird from both front and back. Is that the trend we all should 'keep an eye on'? I sure do. So I can toss it.
Funny when you said inside out I thought you were going to say remember your under garments! But you are so right, attitude is everything! I have found your advice refreshing, I especially like your adding in a french phrase here and there! Keep up the good work!
Grandmama always said she never followed fashion or trends. However she adapted fashion to her own style and taste, and used to take some trendy tips to keep her style fresh. Accessories were one of her secret weapons. A classic outfit with trendy shoes or jewelry would make a big difference. But the most important thing was attitude according to her words. If you feel young and joyful that’s what all the people will see.
I am not a slave to fashion, as we can see unhealthy waves of ridiculous trends being introduced every season, but I do understand that clothing industry needs these constant changes to attract clients. My approach is simple, I keep an eye on trends but apply only these elements that suite my individual style, hence 80/20 is a reasonable proportion. Many of my classic garments survived a decade thanks to a high quality material and couture. My favorite seasonal updates on trend happen in Spring and Summer, because of a hot climate I live in and it's only natural to seek replacement for fading T-shirts, prints and cotton dresses. Marie-Anne, I ❤ all your suggestions and as usually applied common sense and elegance of French Chic Style.
One of my favourite tips is the shoes. I found this to be true after I saw one of your other videos. I never thought of it before and I was so surprised to see the difference to the whole outfit just by changing my shoes.
Excellent advice as always, Marie-Anne! Loved all your tips, especially the use of prints, vibrant colours, beautiful footwear and accessories. Yes I have statement pieces like striped tops, maxi skirt/dresses, wide leg jeans/trousers, also a pair of hot pink sneakers, red ankle boots, red Mary Janes to name a few. By following your guidelines it's guaranteed to always look modern. You look so youthful, love your Marinière. Merci ❤
I have a navy tailored blazer with just one gold button - AND I've taken to wearing it on occasions other than just high days and holidays! I also now have three belts in neutral colours and with statement buckles, to accessorise my outifts. The jacket was bought less than two years ago and two of the belts were bought only a few weeks ago.
I totally agree with you Marie-Anne. Inner beauty and confidence is key to looking modern. I think I stay modern with the shoes and pant silhouettes that I have added to my wardrobe over the past year.
Oh goodness, what a delight to find your channel a couple of weeks back! Since then, I have been doing a deep dive watching all your content. I am so thankful that providing all this information is a passion that you are so good at. By the way, is that a leather trench coat that I spied there? I think we need some information about that. Also, I love the long khaki/olive skirt.
Merci for watching Lorna 🤗 You have a good eye - yes indeed it is a leather trench by Mango. It has featured in several videos maybe it needs more air time 😃
This really made me smile. I am a 66 year old woman who refuses to dye my hair, I am quite grey now. And at the moment I am actually changing my whole wardrobe to the Miss Marple style, which I find really great. and timeless. I really have not cared about silly trends for more than 30 years.
I'm sitting here today with my biggest new splurge, and it's a pair of Converse sneaks in a vivid cobalt blue. We're talking BLUE here. My task for the day is to look on RUclips for some cool ways to lace them so the bows are hidden. In spite of their assertive color, they'll go with absolutely everything else. I'm also looking for some "elevated" buttons for my thrifted black blazer that fits like it was made just for me.

It is always good to have feedback Victoria 😃 hold out for the Wow ob that Tank Top 👍 I agree about hairtsyles - I have seen some very lucky ladies with stunning grey hair but most of us as we age it gets thin and straggly 🙁 so shorter is better
Bonjour Marie-Anne! Confidence in one's self is so important. Thank you for this. I love wearing scarves to add colour and texture. And I've learned to do the French tuck with a belt that I think modernizes my outfits. Thanks for all you do and are.

As always, great video! Merci 💕 I often find that switching out one or two things, be they clothing, accessories, or jewelry, make a huge difference. I enjoy a classic look and cut but find if I go 100% in that direction it can be frumpy. Love to make something just a little off and trendy to offset that
Hi Amber. I’ve never had any issue with flying with knitting. I’ve flown with metal, wood and plastic needles as carry-on. The TSA website specifically allows knitting needles. Good luck and if you’re unsure, maybe stick with wood.
thanks Marie-Anne, its just what I need.... I was going through my closet, threw away some of the oldest less updated items.. love your pink blazer. the current challenge is to look nice for a wedding, as you have advised I use a full mirror. LOVE your channel (not the dull type, I wear all colors that suits me :-) red, fuchsia, blue etc. )
For example I live to add male Ascot of course of pure silk with white good quality T shirt with well fitted jeans and Ballerinas or All Star sneakers.
Thanks for your wonderful video which as always packed full of great ideas. I love your suggestion of adding simple things like a belt of a pair of shoes to update an outfit. These can be inexpensive items that can really make an outfit pop especially when you are on a budget.❤ from Dublin
I think the quickest way to modernize is to update shoes and handbags, They make a great impact on an outfit. The other is to stop wearing jewelry from 10 years ago. If chunky is out, get some sleek, slender pieces. Great tips Marie Anne!
Firstly Marie-Anne I love the hair style please keep the side parting, it really does suit you, I personally think that whatever I am wearing and no matter how nice an outfit it is if my hair is messy then it’s a non and not a wow which is
Love this video!!❤ I am currently on the prowl for the perfect black linen wide leg trousers. I had a great pair, but I lost weight. Now I need a size 4 instead. It's hard to find black linen but I love the look!
I regularly leave it a bit too long between haircuts. When i eventually get my hair cut i feel and look the most modern and people always compliment. I dont even colour my hair anymore. Just a good cut does wonders.
Cannot agree more with you Marie. Bein styled and classy means to be in balance with yourself and the clothing's that you are wearing. Do not be afraid of experiments.
I love the economic idea of the 80/20 wardrobe. I am a classic clothing lover! I find i stay classic for work and drrss-up occasions and do more modern for my casual dress days.
Merci! J'aime les mots francais! I was at a store trying on a nice striped cotton sweater, but it was not a wow. It was a non! In the car on the way home i was trying to decide why it was a non and i realized that it had 4 colours and the 4 colours were just too busy! Thank you marianne! Also, i bought beautiful wider legged red orange pants that are stretchy and perfect for traveling as they won't wrinkle! Bought them in petite as i am petite so they are a great fit! Thank you Marianne! If you could continue to tell us what's in fashion every season, it would be so helpful so that we can just add a few touches to our classics that will keep us modern! Merci beaucoup!!!
Love your tips! I have been watching/following you for a little while and have had a lot of fun updating what I already have in my wardrobe...it's mostly 'classic style'. I would like to add a tip: To look modern (or at our best) do not wear clothes that are too tight. If looking at the size tag's number bothers you, cutoff the tag! No one's going to come up and ask "What size is that?" but they will notice if it's too tight. 😉 If it fits well, you'll look so much better! 🥰🥰
Fit is extremely important 😃 every time I say go for tailored pieces people scream they can't wear anything tight - but tailored does not mean tight it means - it fits!
Fabulous video. Yay, no more skinny jeans! I have rarely parted with scarves, belts, and handbags. I think it actually saves money to have a closet based on 80/20. I buy some pieces that are styled to use a poor man's tailoring for weight loss. I can use belts to cinch a waist, a scarf to camouflage areas where the shirt or sweater seems too big, etc. My basic pumps may be dated, but I will still wear them if they are well-constructed with leather and look new or slightly worn. Some of my vintage '90s Coach bags still look barely worn, so I get them out and use them occasionally. I have enough to be creative and regularly buy a couple of things on sale to feel fresh. I think if it is dated, it can look good if the grooming is impeccable.
That item with the green suit (stale) really spoke to me. I'm always looking for nontraditional suits as a lawyer. I would love if you did a video on formal office attire that still looks modern, especially suits! So many of us are working this sort of job into our late 60s and even 70s and it is very important to look modern in the modern workplace. By the way I adore that pop of pink in the sweater and belt and those amazing orange pants! Lovely video.
When I was a young woman in the dating scene, I had a young man compliment me and mention that when he first met a women, he noticed her shoes. He said he could tell fairly accutately if they would be compatible by the choice and condition of her shoes. I had never considered that men paid that much attention. It has stuck with me for 40 years.
I love your outfit with the brown coat and navy bag..😍 I love navy.. I have started to wear, recently, pink tops and green pants.. do not know how I reached that combo, but looks good.. What I like to wear, among others, and do not see on older women are the pants with low crotch or whatever is called..
I think make up is the most important tip! You don’t need much but if you always go without makeup I think it’s the biggest sign you’ve given up and just don’t care. Not chic, right Marie-Anne?
I am 51 now and used to love vintage clothing. I still have some classic pieces but love the idea of modernizing with a few statement pieces or trends. I love shoes and scarves. I will add some color or texture to make an otherwise very simple outfit feel more modern and fresh! Great tips, thank you!
❤ Marie Anne, You were born with an elegance of spirit, you have retained your femininity over the years... that is so important. Raison d' etre 😊 ! Being modern means being young for a long time, yes ❤
I never could wear high heels (3-inches or higher), so I’m so happy that so many mid-heeled, chic styles are widely available now, especially with block heels. This is the first time in my 64 years that this has been the case, it was essentially either all high heels or flats before. I feel quite frumpy and old-ladyish in completely flat shoes, even though I have plenty of foot problems, too. I love the extra 2 to 2.5 inches in footwear that gives me confidence and polish (in good, genuine-leather footwear). I’m stocking up while they’re available in a variety of colors and styles, just in case, but I hope they never go away again. Stuart Weitzmann mid-heel boots for cold weather and Sezane’s Paula Babies sling-backs for warmer weather are my favorites, they are very comfortable. Of course, I do wear sneakers for exercise walks and long days on my feet, but often prefer a more elegant look. I haven’t actually seen a woman wear high stiletto-heel, pointed-toe pumps here in San Francisco for more than 30 years, only in fashion social media. I love high-quality, up-to-the-minute style shoes, they definitely help keep even essentially-classic outfits looking modern.
I’ve always been very particular about proper fit. I make sure pants are the correct size and length and suit my pear shape. I often buy clothes to fit the widest part of my body well and then get them taken in and to fit the slimmer parts. That custom fit makes a huge difference-slimming and elegant
I do enjoy your videos and have adopted several of your suggestions and I definitely feel more confident as a result. I love wide leg trousers on others and whilst I have 2 pairs I don’t feel ‘right’ in them - just much bigger than I feel in straight leg trousers! Any ideas on the best way to wear them? Thank you.
I would use the green old blazer with jeans, the white blouse would go well with jeans or an A shapped red skirt. I would use the green skirt with a orange, pink or dark blue turtle neck sweater and use a belt.
Hello Marie Anne, I love all your content and find your advice so helpful as I am now into middle age ( 54). Styles that I used to wear now no longer suit me as my shape sadly has changed since Menopause, I was looking back at your makeup video from 4 years ago and wondered if you would consider doing another updated version as maybe you have new favorites to share. I love tutorials for us older girls, the pretty twenty somethings are all well and dandy but the finished look would not sit the same on my face! Thank you and greetings from Germany 🇩🇪.
Bonjour Sabina - it is very odd I know that French makeup is in demand but my makeup videos never did well 🙁 my routine remains the same as well as my favourites. When it comes to makeup I am a creature of habit and a light touch 😃
@@MarieAnneLecoeur Thank you for your quick response, it’s good to know, that your favorites and Techniques remain the same after all this time and as a result your look remains classic, which is just as it should be for us older girlies to look and feel our best.
There is a big surprise for you tonight Sabina when you watch my new video - I hope you enjoy it and will share it with all your friends and my many followers in Germany 😘
Stay away from the mentality of wear black, look slimmer- no black- that’s the unstated rule you never say. Black swallows all attempts of color - unless it’s winter and it’s freezing. Color color color! Thank you Marie!
5:20 "full-length mirror", and that's one of the most important things to look modern, it makes you observe yourself from different angles and change your view of sticking to "dusty knick-knacks". Thank you for this useful and a very nice video.
I was watching this video as I was heading out the door to walk my dog and looked at what I was wearing -- khaki joggers and a rib knit grey t-shirt with white sneakers. It wasn't bad, but looked rather sad -- the khaki joggers would have been better with a white t-shirt or navy & white striped t-shirt and cute flats or sandals; and the grey t-shirt would have looked really good with white jeans and the white sneakers. I'm still a work in progress.
I enjoy your videos very much. In September, a very good from from my high school days (in the 1970s) and I will be traveling to Germany and France on vacation. We live in different areas now, but once a year, we get together for a vacation. This year our vacation will be extra special because we are going to Europe. It is good to have an idea of how to dress because of your lessons. Thank you very much.
I LOVE your...last tip, Ms Anne-Marie; you are an angel for all ladies listening to you! Thank you...gratefully, for everything you do for us! helene :)
I went away overnight last week and I wore a red dress. As I was walking to the train the next day, a very attractive man made a comment about how vibrant my red dress was especially with my lemon yellow overnight bag trailing behind! TBH, I never even thought about it. Today I bought a pretty grass green linen dress, long of course. I have one knee length dress for summer and will still wear it. It's sleeveless and I found a very light white linen blazer to put over it. I realized that I can also use that blazer with a yellow skirt and tank top I have. Or with a white eyelet top, sort of tee shirt style and that same yellow skirt. I like color. I'll wear navy or charcoal grey in the Winter but beige matches my skin so I don't wear it unless I can add a pop of color.

Thanks for your wonderful video which as always packed full of great ideas. I love your suggestion of adding simple things like a belt of a pair of shoes to update an outfit. These can be inexpensive items that can really make an outfit pop especially when you are on a budget.❤ from Dublin
Yes indeed Monica - style does not have to be expensive 😘
Right now, we are wearing the same top 😂 I love a Breton shirt style
Which brand? The buttons set it apart from all the others.
😃💙🤍
I think the quickest way to modernize is to update shoes and handbags, They make a great impact on an outfit. The other is to stop wearing jewelry from 10 years ago. If chunky is out, get some sleek, slender pieces. Great tips Marie Anne!
Yes indeed Susan - shoes... always shoes ❤️👠
Firstly Marie-Anne I love the hair style please keep the side parting, it really does suit you, I personally think that whatever I am wearing and no matter how nice an outfit it is if my hair is messy then it’s a non and not a wow which is
😘
My grandma told me around the age of 16 that the dress can be simple but the hair and shoes matter the most!
Wow so many gorgeous looks!
😘
Love this video!!❤ I am currently on the prowl for the perfect black linen wide leg trousers. I had a great pair, but I lost weight. Now I need a size 4 instead. It's hard to find black linen but I love the look!
Let me know if you find them Lynn 😃
I regularly leave it a bit too long between haircuts. When i eventually get my hair cut i feel and look the most modern and people always compliment. I dont even colour my hair anymore. Just a good cut does wonders.
Cannot agree more with you Marie. Bein styled and classy means to be in balance with yourself and the clothing's that you are wearing. Do not be afraid of experiments.
💯👍
Great video and hello to you Marie anne enjoyed video v much
Glad you enjoyed it Joanna 😃
I always enjoy your episodes and learn something, thank you.
You are very welcome Judith x
I love the economic idea of the 80/20 wardrobe. I am a classic clothing lover! I find i stay classic for work and drrss-up occasions and do more modern for my casual dress days.
Sounds very chic Norma 😃
You are very welcome Eleni 😃 well done for walking away - your style gut is developing 😘
Vielen Dank für deine wunderbaren Videos ❤
😘
I am sure your grooming is impeccable Morgan 😃
That item with the green suit (stale) really spoke to me. I'm always looking for nontraditional suits as a lawyer. I would love if you did a video on formal office attire that still looks modern, especially suits! So many of us are working this sort of job into our late 60s and even 70s and it is very important to look modern in the modern workplace. By the way I adore that pop of pink in the sweater and belt and those amazing orange pants! Lovely video.
I will see what I can do Catherine 😃
When I was a young woman in the dating scene, I had a young man compliment me and mention that when he first met a women, he noticed her shoes. He said he could tell fairly accutately if they would be compatible by the choice and condition of her shoes. I had never considered that men paid that much attention. It has stuck with me for 40 years.
My husband always notices shoes as well Carol 😃
I love your outfit with the brown coat and navy bag..😍 I love navy..
I have started to wear, recently, pink tops and green pants.. do not know how I reached that combo, but looks good..
What I like to wear, among others, and do not see on older women are the pants with low crotch or whatever is called..
A lovely colour combo Elena I use it a lot 😃 yes those harem pants are atrocious 😖
I just found your channel today and I love all your tips (and other videos). You look super chic for your age.
Merci Bumble Bee x
I think make up is the most important tip! You don’t need much but if you always go without makeup I think it’s the biggest sign you’ve given up and just don’t care. Not chic, right Marie-Anne?
💯👍
Love this! Thank you so much, Marie - Anne. You are beautiful inside and out.
Merci Honey Bee 🐝😘
Merci pour les videos très interessants!
😘
Your hair looks great❤️
Merci Marti - all thanks to my hair stylist 🙏
Marie Anne, that brown leather trenchcoat is just amazing!
❤️
I am 51 now and used to love vintage clothing. I still have some classic pieces but love the idea of modernizing with a few statement pieces or trends. I love shoes and scarves. I will add some color or texture to make an otherwise very simple outfit feel more modern and fresh! Great tips, thank you!
I love your thinking Space Kitten 😃
❤ Marie Anne, You were born with an elegance of spirit, you have retained your femininity over the years... that is so important. Raison d' etre 😊
! Being modern means being young for a long time, yes ❤
Merci Sandra 🤗
So entertaining to watch. I love the French words! Very helpful.
Glad you enjoyed it 😃
Colour is my friend, love that you use colour, not just black “because it makes you look thin”
😘
Ms.Marple!! Ha ha! Great advice about 80% classic and 20% trend.
😃
Youy know me, I am such a shoe girl Kimberly ❤️👠
I’ve always been very particular about proper fit. I make sure pants are the correct size and length and suit my pear shape. I often buy clothes to fit the widest part of my body well and then get them taken in and to fit the slimmer parts. That custom fit makes a huge difference-slimming and elegant
Fit is all important Gloria 👏
Your videos are captivating and delightful. 🌷
Merci Celeste x
Great advise Marie Anne. Love this woman's beautiful style. Thank you for this useful video.👍❤
Merci Harsha 😘
Thank you Marie-Anne
I do enjoy your videos and have adopted several of your suggestions and I definitely feel more confident as a result. I love wide leg trousers on others and whilst I have 2 pairs I don’t feel ‘right’ in them - just much bigger than I feel in straight leg trousers! Any ideas on the best way to wear them? Thank you.
It very much depends on your bodyshape and style goals Jan 😃
Yes I think you’re right. I don’t think I’ve got slim enough legs to carry it off.
I would use the green old blazer with jeans, the white blouse would go well with jeans or an A shapped red skirt. I would use the green skirt with a orange, pink or dark blue turtle neck sweater and use a belt.
Nice ideas 😃
Yes! Gray, also. Women who have Gray hair look dead when they wear black and gray, unless they accessorize with color.
Black is a great neutral for pops of colour to shine Jsvi 😃
Well done! Must share with you that I LOVE your sweater!
5:20 "full-length mirror", and that's one of the most important things to look modern, it makes you observe yourself from different angles and change your view of sticking to "dusty knick-knacks".
Thank you for this useful and a very nice video.
You are very welcome x
Looks delicious.
I prefer the tentacles.
May I add you are very elegant. This black turtleneck looks amazing on you
I was watching this video as I was heading out the door to walk my dog and looked at what I was wearing -- khaki joggers and a rib knit grey t-shirt with white sneakers. It wasn't bad, but looked rather sad -- the khaki joggers would have been better with a white t-shirt or navy & white striped t-shirt and cute flats or sandals; and the grey t-shirt would have looked really good with white jeans and the white sneakers. I'm still a work in progress.
We are all a work in progress Susan - you should see me when I am chain sawing logs 😅
I hike and walk a lot, so light hikers are my favorite shoes. I always get comments on my favorite pair - bold purple.
You are very welcome Sharon - I hope you have a lovely trip x
I LOVE your...last tip, Ms Anne-Marie; you are an angel for all ladies listening to you!
Thank you...gratefully, for everything you do for us! helene :)
You are very welcome Helene x
It sounds like you have your style personality perfected Tina and it obviously shows to the delight of others 😃
Marie-Anne, I would love to see a segment on French women’s favorite modern hairstyles/haircuts. ❤
I will see what I can do Ciral x
@@MarieAnneLecoeur 😍
Wear timeless classics that suits you and add a modern and fresh detail. Do not wear just modern pieces all together. That looks bizzare on women 50+
