There is a worldwide epidemic of frumpiness for men and women. Baggy T-shirts, sneakers, tights, ill-fitting jeans, baseball caps, shapeless jackets. Mostly colourless and dull. Thank you Marie-Anne for explaining some great options!
Truth! Back in the '90's, I had a friend when I was in Germany whose figure I never saw. When she visited me, we went to a spa, and I saw her figure for the first time. She had a figure like Sophia Loren, or Marilyn Monroe!!! I couldn't believe my eyes...I told her she oughta show it off, not hide it in baggy clothes!
I would love an episode on how to dress/outfits wearing shoes that are practical for walking around a city or for out and about around town running errands. I certainly can’t do that in pointed toe kitten heels. 😊
Or just being around the house. Cooking, cleaning, tidying... I won't do the dishes in a silk blouse, either (sorry, honorary French chic lady Jennifer L. Scott...😉😄)
I have leather shoes that are in a sort of a sneaker style but due to the leather they look quite dressy. For warmer weather I swear by Merrell sandals. They have some dressier styles, again in leather, with good arch support and comfortable enough for walking long distances. I wear them with both dresses/skirts and ankle length pants.
I have done a number of videos on flat shoe choices Judith ruclips.net/video/3nCJhlWchFQ/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/x5EuHPIL4rQ/видео.html for example 😃
I agree with all of these, but the second outfit was a real eye-opener for me! I don’t wear sports clothes outside a gym anyway, but I had not realised the difference that curved and straight lines make. I have always felt better in structured clothes than droopy ones, and now I know why. Thank you, Marie-Anne, that is very useful.
Marie-Anne, You never disapoint! I love how you go into great detail as to WHY these outfits are frumpy. Breaking it idown, piece by piece is extremely helpful. Whenever I am shopping, i ask myself, "What would Marie-Anne say?
Great content as always, dear Marie-Anne. Love the fact that you have videos previously done in your channel for short and overweight women as well, for those with a tummy recently and for those who don't like or cannot wear heels due to health issues. Style is possible for everybody. You're a wonderful style expert 🙏🏻❤
I retired and got stuck in the frump. I'm working on adding some style back in my wardrobe and your videos have been very helpful and uplifting. I'm validated when we both agree, and I've learned quite a few tips to fill in the blanks. Plus I get a refresher on my understanding of French.
Wonderful styling tips to avoid looking frumpy, dear Marie-Anne. You're absolutely right and love the term 'de-frump'. The styling journey starts when we accept ourselves to dress better. It's also possible to be comfortably chic since being older and/or overweight is not an excuse to lack style as there are ladies I've seen who are larger and older wearing beautiful outfits gracefully. That RL grey turtle neck sweater is fabulous complimenting your lovely complexion. Merci 💕
The changes looked fantastic. Sadly as a short (5’1”) lady, extremely plus size with arthritis in my knees and problems with my feet - that were wide even when I wore size 12 40 years ago- I am really struggling. I try hard, but I always feel frumpy and that makes me feel so sad that I end up not bothering. I get to a “what’s the point “ place. Help for people with health challenges would be incredibly helpful. xx
Bonjour Karen - from working with people with health challenges I know that it takes time. Believe you can do it as I say at the end, change your mind to one where you can doi this and you will. Take it in small increments and give yourself smaller goals over a longer period - do not expect to get it all in one short space of time 😘

I think when i lost my waist, i thought looser clothes disguised that fact. They actually made me look even bigger! Now I see. My tiny waist is never coming back but a waistline can be visually created.

I also go up a size in tops so my waist is defined but I don’t look like the Michelin Man and blouses and shirts are so big these days that I can go down one or two sizes for the look without the bulk.
I love that you actually educate us about the reason these outfits look so frumpy. Tips about the wideness of the shoes, rounded collars, and shapeless garments can be applied to an entire wardrobe. Merci.
The rounded clothing adds pounds on one,for certain!!😮 Great photo with arrows to detail!! Draws the attention to re- think ones' choice😊. Hi Marie!! ❤Looking sharp! And classy!!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Dear Marie-Anne, I'm not only over 50 but far beyond 70... 😂 but I've never ever dressed that frumpy. And never will. Love your outfit in this beautiful grey. I never understand how many women in my age leave their houses dressed so "sadly". It is not a matter of budget, even with a small one you can dress tastefully. Greetings from 🇩🇪
You are very correct! It is not about a budget as you can look presentable with a small budget. My neighbor always wears way oversize tshirt and sweatpants. She would parade around the neighborhood in them. People laugh behind her back
I agree a frumpandemic. I am guilty. Put on some weight and now it seems so easy to reach for looser frumpier clothing than addressing the underlying issue. Even so, in a couple of better pants and shirt/blouse combinations I can look 20 pounds lighter.
I don’t wear any of the clothes you shared thank goodness 😅 however I really enjoyed the breakdown of outfit number two. The curves that were all over that outfit really made it look frumpy and your explanation was so clear and true. I will definitely be paying attention to the lines in my outfits. You look lovely in the gray outfit ❤
After watching this video. Marie-Anne it is quite easy really to change from frumpy to stylish, there are plenty of helpful tips for everyone, I see lots of ladies that are quite large and all they seem to wear are tight leggings and oversized T-Shirts which does nothing for them at all, I know they probably feel comfortable in this attire but if they were to try some of your tips I’m sure they would look and feel better. Thank you.
All over-sized, I think, done with intentionality can look fashionable. The first outfit with some color and different shoes would be cool. But it's such a fine line.

Marie-anne is wearing a bold bracelet! Didn't notice it for several minutes, even though you were moving your arms constantly. I loved your bringing out the droopy rounded lines of the one outfit. Helps me understand WHY something isn't working.
First, I think I have a variety of versions of “The Frump!” 😂 At a few months shy of 69, single, and not-looking, comfort is key! HOWever, I do dress more stylishly for work where comfy is not the key factor! ❤ Always a motivator, Marie-Anne! 🙏🏻
@rrhines3151. You say comfort at work is not always the key ... but it could be! If your shoes aren't comfortable, I suggest going to a high end store like Nordstrom's, Macy's, or Neiman Marcus (or a comparable store in a city near you), where they actually MEASURE your feet, know their brands, and can fit you in a comfortable shoe that meets your needs ... heel height (maybe a flat), length, width in the toe box, etc. Many do not know, that with a wider ball of the foot, we can't CAN'T just wear the next size up in a Medium. I actually need a "W" on the end of the shoe box! Or, sometimes, an "M" if the trained professional shoe fitter knows his brands! Then, the rest of your work style. Find a saleswoman who really wants to help you build a work wardrobe, even if it's a little at a time. She may be more motivated if she knows you'll buy a few pieces, say 3 to start, and return to her the next time. When I changed from a setting where clients struggled to make ends meet, to my own professional private practice, this is how I upgraded my work wardrobe. It worked amazingly well, because she began to know me and what zi liked. She also worked with the pieces I already had. Sometimes, it's the small things that make a big difference! Best wishes & good luck! Shirley from Texas😊❤
I love this video. We need to get out of the lock down frump of 2020. I think we got used to being at home and so maybe some of us, me included, stopped really caring about fashion. We just wanted comfort. Thank you for reminding us that we can be comfortable and stylish at the same time. ❤
I have a sweater like that in an orchid color, it’s very warm and I love it! I’d never wear it with sweats😂. The gray sweater and skirt are pure 1975! Haha. I had outfits just like that, down to the boots.
Marie- Anne, I am having fun with monochrome colors but different textures. It is below 32 degrees high for the day where i am in US. I wore a charcoal gray tweed fitted blazer and a same color gray turtleneck with an inherited red brooch flower on my lapel. It looked amazing on Zoom work calls. The next day I wore a turquoise cashmere turtleneck sweater with a turquoise velveteen smoking jacket and graduated silver bead necklace. I have a new, fun formula😊❤👏
Ooh you mentioned lock down, I’m from Melbourne Victoria & our lockdowns were epic & so damaging with out minds & fashions. We even had curfews!! Thank you for your wonderful advice 👏🏼👏🏼🇦🇺
Very well said Marie Anne! May I add to your last comment that it helps me a lot when I see pictures of well dressed women in Pinterest. Thiis way I never let myself dress in a frumpy way. I stay alert!
This was awesome! I love the various shades of gray in all the outfits & that Marie-Anne was also wearing gray. It kept my eyes from bouncing all over. ❤️
Thank you for the also very informative and very entertaining funny video. The frumpy outfits you show here don't only do nothing for ladies over 50 but also look awul on young women imo. I will definitely come back to your channel for more videos ❤
Bonjour Madame Lecoeur, vos explications sont vraiment claires et précises et l’ajout d’exemples visuels est très bien pensé. Le tout nous permet de bien comprendre en quoi une tenue nous avantage ou pas. Merci à vous !
Woooow i watched so many videos and all those stylist encouraged me to dress frumpy! Well... I was starting from wearing to tight clothes. And too bright! Then i went to the base. But it was too boyish. And frumpy. Now i see better! I liked all the suggested clothes. I find them elegant! And weareble
I just found you last night and today I put the 3 color rule in practice. You are a lovely lady, thank you for your work and advice ❤😊 from Los Angeles, California
Hi Marie-Anne! And what a timely video for this frigid January weather! It IS tempting sometimes in winter, to retreat into big, fluffy, shapeless clothes. Thanks for reminding us that we can still be cozy, in more flattering shapes. I would add that we can also wear stylish jewelry and handbag when we go out in cold weather. Love that shade of lipstick on you!
The last combination with the pleated skirt, sweatshirt, and sneakers is an example of a trend that's been popular for a while now, which is juxtaposition, opposite dressing, or mixing dressy with casual, etc. I agree with you, though, that this particular example does look frumpy.
There is merit in contrast Rose - I do it a lot but I tghink this outfit just tipped over the edge. It was an outfit of two parts with no real cohesion which was the problem and the contrast lost it's bite 😃
Bonjour Marie-Anne, Wonderful suggestions to banish the frump! I especially liked the second one with the explanation of the round versus vertical or straight lines. I have noticed that as I get older more structured, even soft structure, looks better on me. V-necks are my best friend. Merci!
I prefer the beautiful outfit you are wearing, Marie-Anne, to the suggested outfits. That said, your advice is, as always, spot-on. The trousers that pool at the foot are a style I will not adopt.
Great advice from Marie- Anne, midi skirt look awful, particularly if you are hippy, maxi looks so much better with a pointed shoe peeping out. Great advice too on pleats. Belts make you look leaner, younger and more stylish, what an icon she is. Bravo!
Thank you Marie-Anne! The truth is we all struggle against being lazy. Some days I really dr ont want to put gorth the effort, but I force myself. I always feel much better after Ive pushed myself to dress so I look "Presentable". I actually have to because In a weak moment I got rid of all clithes that eould sllow me to look "frumpy". What was I thinking?😂😂😂😂
I hear you Holly - but the extra effort involved is so small and the results SO much better it is a shame not to do so. Well done for dumping all your frump 😃
Completely agree on the outfits, however one thing I won’t change are my trainers - some comforts cannot be compromised - pointy toed, heeled shoes are just not comfortable.
I find that even when i feel cruddy, i always feel better when i get dressed at least reasonably well, even if i am sick and will have to sleep all day. Style is something that i do for myself to feel better - it has an internal reward.
These are so helpful. I feel like the poster child of what not to do😂. Maybe I could just come over and pose and all my frumpy outfits as an example of what not to do. I'm getting better😂
It could be because they do not feel good about themselves that they dress this way Judith 🙁 I am here to help their style and improve the way they think of themselves - the two go hand in hand 😃
I finally caved after working from home since 2020 and bought the wide-leg soft velour lounge pants from Victoria's Secret and I added a tailored t-shirt or eyelash sweater for work. I am in soft clothes and I do not look like I should be at the gym. I also bought some wide-leg pieces, dresses, and skirts from Choco's Travelers collection. I add a turtleneck and cardigan or sweater to complete my work-from-home look. I am adding comfort that is tailored. Chicos has been making really soft thing guage sweaters that feel good and have a shape with style. They also make stretch jeans in dark blues and black that I could run in. Lily silk is very comfortable and I started buying from them after your videos. Maybe I am somewhat frumpy, but I seem to find more tailored or structured clothing that is soft and comfortable to do chair yoga on break from work. I have found that adding jell insoles and other tricks makes my pointy-toe shoes comfortable to wear when I actually leave my house. My goal is to reach the age of 60 and look like a model until I pass away.
@@MarieAnneLecoeur When you have time, would you give us your thoughts on matte jersey and other polyester blends like the Chico Traveler collection that is supposed to be comftorable, easy to take care of and hard to wrinkle? Are they or can they be tailored or presentable? Do they look cheap? Can they be accesorized to look more elegant?
0:18 It's so hard to find that knit skirt and top set in the stores, and if you do, the fit is so tight and not well designed. It's a look that I always loved.
This is interesting for me because I have a pleated midi skirt that I bought for a wedding next week and to wear after that as well. It is not so long as the one pictured, more the length of the other skirt. I tink it will be alright with a lace top or a sequined top and a pair of shoes. Would you wear tights in a colour like your legs or darker? It is January in Scotland so bare legs are probably not what to wear. Thank you for the video .

I love this video. We need to get out of the lock down frump of 2020. I think we got used to being at home and so maybe some of us, me included, stopped really caring about fashion. We just wanted comfort. Thank you for reminding us that we can be comfortable and stylish at the same time. ❤
You are very welcome Rose Marie 😘
Wearing different textures within the same tone is the very best way to wear it Cathy watch here ruclips.net/video/nR9CKb_UrEs/видео.html 😃
I love the "frumpy" outfits, I think I rock them 😜
Grazie. I love these outfits! The one you're wearing too! The classic bracelet is stunning with that sweater! I will surely copy that combo!
That is very kind of you Cecilia merci beaucoup 🤗 do let me see your outfit when you have put it together 😘
Thank you very much for sharing the useful tips on not looking frumpy. It's so helpful to me.
I am glad you think so Patricia x
Ooh you mentioned lock down, I’m from Melbourne Victoria & our lockdowns were epic & so damaging with out minds & fashions. We even had curfews!! Thank you for your wonderful advice 👏🏼👏🏼🇦🇺
😘
For the record/ wishing you and yours a wonderful evening ahead and as well a nice 😊 day tomorrow
Merci Michelle x
Very well said Marie Anne! May I add to your last comment that it helps me a lot when I see pictures of well dressed women in Pinterest. Thiis way I never let myself dress in a frumpy way. I stay alert!
👏 a great way to train your style eye Fanny
So THAT'S how you can make a midi length skirt look non-frumpy! I was starting to think there was no hope for them. Thanks for covering this.
You are very welcome Bells Beer
Another helpful video, merci! I simply adore that you are adding an occasional French phrase on screen.
🤗 glad you enjoy them Haggis x
This was awesome! I love the various shades of gray in all the outfits & that Marie-Anne was also wearing gray. It kept my eyes from bouncing all over. ❤️
I am glad you appreciated the thought that went into producing the video Ellie 🤗
Thankyou for showing us a better way.❤
You are very welcome Becky x
Thank you for the also very informative and very entertaining funny video. The frumpy outfits you show here don't only do nothing for ladies over 50 but also look awul on young women imo.
I will definitely come back to your channel for more videos ❤
Merci for joining us - please give all your alpakas a big hug from me they look so cute ❤️
@@MarieAnneLecoeur I will definitely do 🍀 thank you Marie Anne ☺️
This chic happy elegant lady loved your video❤️❤️❤️
Made me happy too! 😁 I’m working on the other words! Love the French words Marie-Anne uses! ❤
😃👍
Marie-Anne love your videos and descriptions. There are a few things I can do to improve my wardrobe.
Let me know how you get on Paula x
Here’s to 2024 being the year of defrump!
I am so grateful for your wise advice Marie Anne! No more of athletic wear everywhere. Elegance please!
Amen to that Viven 😃
Bravissima, energica, viva! Grazie Marie-Anne Lecoeur🙂
🤗
Love the skirt and jumper outfit, would love it. Thank you for a great video
It is a lovely outfit Janet 😃
Bonjour Madame Lecoeur, vos explications sont vraiment claires et précises et l’ajout d’exemples visuels est très bien pensé. Le tout nous permet de bien comprendre en quoi une tenue nous avantage ou pas. Merci à vous !
🤗
Spring is on the way, Marie-Anne. Would love to see some bright and cheeful outfits using colours such as greens, blues and violets.
I will see what I can do Eva x
Yes , agree ! More color , please . While gray & black are nice " neutrals " , on cold , overcast winter days , we need color in our lives !
As always I look forward to your videos, I thought the last outfit with the A-line jumper and skirt with black knee high boots was so lovely 🙂
😃👍
Chic, happy, elegant lady 😍 I absolutely love it!!! Merci Marie-Anne pour tes précieux conseils ❤🇨🇦
You are very welcome Marie x
I never think about silhouette (I don't like my aging body!) when putting together an outfit--colour and texture are usually my focus. Merci!🧡
I am very happy to have added a new view point for you to consider 😘
Very educational; merci Marie-Anne!
Glad you enjoyed it Kathy 😃
Hi Marie-Anne Such class. Loved all your corrections. Brilliant pure style. Thank you for sharing. Have a great week.
You are very welcome Carol - I hope you have a nice week too x
Bonjour and merci Marie-Anne! Interesting and spot on graphic advice on 'Le frump', details can make a world of difference! 👏😍
It is all in the details Francisca 😃
I'm loving this video idea, there have been so many frumpy items on trend like those dad sandals! thank you for this video showing alternatives.
You are very welcome Keodi1 x
I love this lady!
🤗
Thank you, and as always, enjoy your advice.
My pleasure Jeanette x
I just found you last night and today I put the 3 color rule in practice. You are a lovely lady, thank you for your work and advice ❤😊 from Los Angeles, California
You are very welcome Mrs P 😘
Hi Marie-Anne! And what a timely video for this frigid January weather! It IS tempting sometimes in winter, to retreat into big, fluffy, shapeless clothes. Thanks for reminding us that we can still be cozy, in more flattering shapes. I would add that we can also wear stylish jewelry and handbag when we go out in cold weather. Love that shade of lipstick on you!
Indeed Lynn - go for tailoring and add layers 😃 Chic and Warm 😘
Bonjour MarieAnne. Love this. Please make more like this. Love you! 💋
I will do my best Norah x
@@MarieAnneLecoeur thank you. Doesn't have to be frumpy outfits. Just how to make any outfit look better! 💋
I can do that 😃
I actually love that oversized combination.
Bonjour Marie-Anne,
Wonderful suggestions to banish the frump! I especially liked the second one with the explanation of the round versus vertical or straight lines. I have noticed that as I get older more structured, even soft structure, looks better on me. V-necks are my best friend. Merci!
Structure and tailoring Lorrie 👍 it helps give form and design 🙌
Miss Marie-Anne darling that's a cool tips and advice on video my Beautiful Teacher l love you 😘❤️
Merci Hector
You're welcome my sweet queen
I prefer the beautiful outfit you are wearing, Marie-Anne, to the suggested outfits. That said, your advice is, as always, spot-on. The trousers that pool at the foot are a style I will not adopt.
👍
That outfit with the grey a-line skirt was so pretty 💕 I enjoyed this video Marie-Anne. Merci!
It was delightful 😃
Another great video. Thank you. I made some recent purchases based on your tips. I’m developing my 66 yr old style. Great fun!
Style has to be fun ma chère 😃👍
Great advice from Marie- Anne, midi skirt look awful, particularly if you are hippy, maxi looks so much better with a pointed shoe peeping out. Great advice too on pleats. Belts make you look leaner, younger and more stylish, what an icon she is. Bravo!
Merci Caroline 🤗
Thank you ❤
I am above 40 but I like your content, it teaches me a lot
🤗
I'm almost 50 and definitely relate to the frump 😕
I can help you with that Amelia x
So beautiful examples my style teacher ❤
You are very welcome Aristea x
Wonderful video! You explained everything so well here 👏🏼😊 Merci beaucoup!
🤗
Thank you Marie-Anne! The truth is we all struggle against being lazy. Some days I really dr ont want to put gorth the effort, but I force myself. I always feel much better after Ive pushed myself to dress so I look "Presentable". I actually have to because In a weak moment I got rid of all clithes that eould sllow me to look "frumpy". What was I thinking?😂😂😂😂
I hear you Holly - but the extra effort involved is so small and the results SO much better it is a shame not to do so. Well done for dumping all your frump 😃
You’re amazing, I love your videos, advice. Thank you from 🇦🇺
Merci Mary x
Hi Marie-Anne! Great visuals!! Dump the frump!! Thank you!!
😃👍
Completely agree on the outfits, however one thing I won’t change are my trainers - some comforts cannot be compromised - pointy toed, heeled shoes are just not comfortable.
Watch here GS ruclips.net/video/3nCJhlWchFQ/видео.html
I find that even when i feel cruddy, i always feel better when i get dressed at least reasonably well, even if i am sick and will have to sleep all day. Style is something that i do for myself to feel better - it has an internal reward.
So true. Hope you feel better soon.
Yes, yes, yes Helen 🙌
😂 outfit #2 is what I’m currently wearing, on the sofa under a blanket in a Sunday afternoon because it’s -4 degrees outside….
Stay warm Nellie 😘
Fabulous video!
These are so helpful. I feel like the poster child of what not to do😂. Maybe I could just come over and pose and all my frumpy outfits as an example of what not to do. I'm getting better😂
Just keep training your style eye Sierra Sky - you got this 😘
@MarieAnneLecoeur will do ❤️. If you ever feel like doing a series on cowboy hats and Boots I'm so there😃
🤠
In Thanksgiving: { USA 🇺🇸} : btw: The Presentation: ( Awareness- Fashion ~ Savvy- Information ℹ️ Fabulous) : btw: is wonderful: again: wonderful
Fantastic tips! Great video!
😘
Another awesome tip thank you.
😘
Wonderful series of videos.
🤗
Thank you for this. How do people feel good in frumpy, baggy clothes, tailored clothes for every time. X
A more tailored look is the key Morgan - there is a spectrum of choice and I simply want to encourage people to nudge themselves in that direction 😘
I will see what I can do Morgan x
0:18 It's so hard to find that knit skirt and top set in the stores, and if you do, the fit is so tight and not well designed. It's a look that I always loved.
I find the unhemmed trouser in #2 to look very frumpy. Hems that drag n the floor just screams too lazy to bother to look nice.
❤😊🎉 I get it!👍 Thank you!
😃🤗
I love what you are wearing!! Do you have a link to your sweater? 🥰
It is by Ralph Lauren Annette - it is several years old now x
This is interesting for me because I have a pleated midi skirt that I bought for a wedding next week and to wear after that as well. It is not so long as the one pictured, more the length of the other skirt. I tink it will be alright with a lace top or a sequined top and a pair of shoes.
Would you wear tights in a colour like your legs or darker? It is January in Scotland so bare legs are probably not what to wear.
Thank you for the video .
When I wear tights to an event like that I would wear nude tights to match my legs Havana 😘 but it can also depend on the colour of your outfit
