Single Handed Sailing Transatlantic Part 3

- I sail across the atlantic single handed! Mindelo to Martinique. A very quick final week of the passage with perfect wind conditions, some sleep deprivation issues. Arrival in the Caribbean, to Martinique, welcomed by my mum, Sinead and friends.
“Too Easy” = result of practice and preparation-sign of a good sailor.
Simply put, the best transatlantic story I've seen. Happy days always, SkipRay, Kerry,Ireland.
Awesome work. Easy because of the prep. Great watch and well done
Just watched the four videos from Canaries to Cape Verde to Martinique. You are so pleasant to listen to and your honesty refreshing. My longest passages have been 13 hours, 11 hours and 10 hours and I am usually chomping at the bit to get to the half way stage from which it accelerates as you see the destination grow large. So I cannot comprehend what it is like to have so many days at sea. I have felt really tired on a single night’s passage. Can’t conceive what it would be like to be deprived of sleep for consecutive nights.
A great achievement! ⛵️
Massive congratulations Mark. A transAtlantic is on our bucket list. Fair dues Sir.
Thanks very much! It's a wonderful circuit, loving all of it really.
A hell of an achievement and even more so single handed. You’re great to talk through how you are feeling. I can’t imagine how you keep going with the sleep patterns.
Thanks for the comment! I think I'd need to get into a better rhythm with a longer passage but it just about worked for this one!
Well done sir. If you feel it was easy, I'm sure it's only a reflection of your preparation. Bravo
Thanks very much for watching Alex! Definitely preparation had a lot to do with it, not just the boat but the shorter passages to get used to sleep deprivation incrementally.
Good job Captain!!!! Hell of a achievement 👍✌️
Thanks for watching! It's still not fully sunk in 3 months later 😁 the trip back is starting to loom large
Another great video Mark. Very enjoyable to watch. Cheers.
Thanks Feargus!
Well done, Mark. A great achievement and so captivating to watch.
Thanks very much Paul!
Yes, congrats, I've been waiting for this... only a little, maybe a little more envious than I was 🙂
Love your commentary Mark..."too f*ing easy"..."expecting more hardship". Wonderful achievement 👏 👏 Congratulations 🇮🇪
congratulations ! what adventure thank you so much for posting for all to experience with you .
Brilliant man, can hardly imagine what it must feel like to do this!
Cheers again, yeah it was one of the best feelings 😁
Yes, it's just time, and making the leap. The arrival is always special though.
I've been looking forward to this part. Congratulations on a fantastic voyage.
Sandy
Thanks very much Sandy! Cheers for watching
really brilliant I watched all three and shall be looking at all you other videos 🙂
Well done !
Halmatic 30 warp speed! Congrats Mark, an awesome achievement and your videos are fantastic, thanks for taking the time to produce them.
Thanks Conrad!
Very cool!. I had lunch with Helen in Sligo a couple of days ago and she told me about your arrival. Well done Mark.
Thanks very much Kevin!
Congrats, super achievement 👏 🙌 👌
Excellent. Thanks for sharing.
A Big congratulations from another Sligo man, what an achievement well done. Your a credit to Sligo men and Irish men alike.👏👏👏👍🇮🇪
Ah cheers! Very kind words, delighted to know I have Sligo people following along 😁
Congratulations and thanks for sharing ❤
Thank you soooo much for taking us along, that was great. CONGRATULATIONS on your ocean crossing, hope you post more vids.👍☀️🌴☮
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching and the comment!
The excitement when closing in on your family at Martinique was tangible! I’ve watched many trans Atlantic crossings. Yours was not only trouble free but by far the quickest. Don’t know how you managed without sleep. I’ve struggled with no sleep on a single night’s passage. For that reason I will only do a longer passage with at least one other.
I am so pleased for you. What a spectacular achievement. ⛵️
Ah thanks Hugh, what a lovely comment. In retrospect I'm even more delighted with the passage, it really couldn't have gone better for me despite the day to day minor issues.
Brilliant video! Well done you, and no big butchers bill except lack of sleep 😆.
Thanks Joel! Yep delighted we made it through relatively unscathed.
Wonderful adventure! Well done!
Thank you for watching!
That was great!! Congratulations and very well done!!
Fabulous set of videos across the Atlantic. I reckon anyone who is thinking about doing the journey solo for the first time would get a pure commentary of how it feels. Looking forward to watching the next journey.
Lovely comment Martin thanks! Glad you enjoyed them
Great achievement! Wonderful to watch you grow in confidence as the journey progressed. Hope to see you making another long passage soon!
Be blessed!
Thanks for the lovely comment! Definitely growing in confidence, still lots to learn, looking forward to the next one!
Well done, I love your understated rational approach to what you are doing.
Thanks very much Mark! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos
Wonderful stuff thank you so much👍
Fantastic, Congrats Captain.
Well done my friend! Enjoyed your trip immensely, thank you. Have fun.
Looking forward to more adventures.
Thanks Paul, glad you enjoyed it!
AMAZING!!! Loving these videos thanks!
Delighted you're enjoying them Rory!
Congratulations, well done!!!
Congratulations, Sir
Well done man.....
Brilliant! Love it! Me next!
Watched the three episodes of the crossing. You made it "look" easy, however it seems your preparations along with your ability to focus contributed to that. I'm torn apart by the urge to do this type of adventure or to stay in a comfortable bubble just contemplating it. Your videos are helping me realise whats possible, so maybe, just maybe I'll be leartning how to handle a boat and follow the dream soon.......thanks again for the insights and the inspiration......Sail on!!
Thanks very much for the lovely comment Michael!
Brilliant Mark, really well done mate. I'll head in to Shoots and have one in your honour!
Thanks David, really appreciate that!
Great achievement!!
Well done. Confidence growing as you get the miles clocked up. Enjoy and bask in mission accomplished 🇮🇪 ⛵️
Thanks, definitely enjoying it! And a lovely place to arrive to.
Well done, brilliant achievement.
Thanks Chris!
Congrats Mark 👍🎉
Cheers!
Well done.
Bravo! Great effort!
Well achieved.
Loved the voyage and your video's I felt your tiredness and almost fell asleep watching you, congratulations and well done Cheers Mick from Aussie.
Haha, that was the goal alright. Delighted you enjoyed them Mick and Annie
Masterclass.... well done and congratulations.
Truly grateful that you decided to start a RUclips channel a while back. Enjoy your time in the Caribbean.
Best regards from Jarle
Thanks Jarle, delighted that I can share my journey and that people are enjoying it.
Something I do on long passages, not giving advice, just ideas - put up storm jib only at night so you can get a full night of sleep. Your autopilot will keep you on course and your AIS will keep you safe from other ships. Not much to worry about except sleep.
Thanks James! I may give that a shot next time. The rolling was the main issue so I'd be curious as to whether less sail would help with that but worth a try. I was already pretty heavily reefed
@@SoloSailingSapphira The cabin of a small yacht is truly a wonderful thing; not only will it shelter you from a tempest, but from the other troubles in life, it is a safe retreat. - L. Francis Herreshoff.
Have fun either way, sailor.
Excellent!
Well done on the milage averages, always a great feeling to set PRs. Love the excitement as you closed in on the target mate. Thinking how we are going to feel along the way. Hope you left me a few mahi to catch. 😊 We had a great run down to Mindelo from Tenerife butterflying nearly the entire distance. Looking forward to using our spinnaker in a few days. We depart on Saturday so will be over there soon me thinks. Enjoy the quality time, your return trip will be more adventurous 🙂⛵
Hope the preparations for the crossing are going well Eric, wishing you fair winds and plenty mahimahi! Where about on this side are you heading? Return trip for me definitely bound to be more eventful and adventurous than the way out!
Congrats!
Well done sir! I hope my crossing goes as smoothly. Leaving Mindelo day after tomorrow
Fair winds! Hope you have a great passage
Congrats, Mark! It was a pleasure following your adventures!
Congratulations, like many I've watched all your videos. It's so refreshing to share your passage and your emotional journey. Wonderful experience for you. I'd like to do this myself one day and your courage, vim and vigor are so infectious. well done!!!!
Thanks for the lovely comment Dan, and fair winds for your future voyages
Well done sir.....John
Thanks John!
Well done, fella. :)
Congratulations and thanks for sharing your amazing adventures with us, enjoy the sunny Caribbean.
Great achievement and great boat! Well done.
Well done!! Thank you for filming your journey, despite being exhausted. It looked like a fabulous voyage.
Thanks Lisa! I think it helped talking to the camera to be honest!
Great job. Not an easy accomplishment. I think the most important part of off-shore single-hand sailing is fear management. There is no one way to do it because we are all different. Comes easier to some sailors than others. Enjoy the windward and leeward islands. You’ve earned it.
Thanks, that's a great way of looking at it. My Biscay crossing was possibly a point where I could have lost confidence, if I had a few breakages while already out of my comfort zone and exhausted I may not have taken to single handed sailing, luckily the boat was well capable and I was left to manage my fear while she took care of getting us through the weather. Now I'm totally hooked and in a better place to get through difficulties, which may be properly tested by the return trip
Well done captain. Thanks for sharing your adventure 👍
Congratulations! I loved the last bit where you shared the feelings about not wanting to mess up at the last minute. After sailing so far without worrying about being exact to all of a sudden coming into a small harbor. Amazing trip!
That was an amazing video of an amazing crossing. Congratulations. Conditions like that really make the trip look easy, but I know there was so much preparation and care in the planning that you were rewarded with an uneventful crossing. And the FISH ! OMG!
Thanks Larry delighted you enjoyed it! The fish were really delicious, caught a yellowfin tuna here in the Caribbean yesterday so still catching!
Congratulations on your accomplishment! Where to next?
Thanks very much! Sailing south for the next while, Saint Lucia next, then south over the next month or two to Grenada stopping at St Vincent & Grenadines along the way. Back north after that, then in May back across the Atlantic to Ireland via Bermuda and the Azores. That's the plan for the moment anyhow!
@@SoloSailingSapphira If you make it up to Annapolis, let me know !
Kudos Mark, congratulations on another fantastic achievement! Really enjoying the videos
Thanks Martin! Great to be able to share it with everyone.
Congratulations & well done! Maurice.
Jack Sparrow region nice
well done great achievement looking fwd to the next adventures
Great stuff, glad it went smoothly for you. Looking forward to seeing your next adventures
Congrats Mark, well done for making the big crossing. I’ve watch all your episodes and really enjoy your content. I met you two years ago in Cork City harbour, Moody S31. Great to see you living your dreams.
Hi Ray, yes I remember! Hope you've had some good sailing since. Fair winds, delighted you're enjoying the videos!
As per other comments, congrats on a great achievement!
Man, I really, really enjoyed that series. Thanks so much.
Brilliant David, glad you did. Cheers for watching
Well done to you & the pocket ship that got you across the line. It’s an achievement & don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
Oh yea, you can wipe that cheesy grin off your face now, for a while at least!!!!!
Hats off to you.
Haha thanks John, I'll try to wipe it off 😁
Great video, great achievement. Nice one.
Congratulations. You made it look so easy 😊
Congrats on a well done singlehanded passage! Looks like maybe the pleasures of offshore singlehanded sailing has claimed another victim! It's sometimes difficult for those who haven't done it to appreciate that longer offshore singlehanded passages away from nearshore hazards can be easier than nearshore and coastal. Agree that making landfall is often the most tiring and risky part. Hope your return passage goes as smoothly.
Haha, yeah I wasn't sure if I'd like it heading off for this year, safe to say I'm a total addict now. Thanks for the kind comment and fair winds to you!
Thanks for sharing this experience! At 14:32, try not to use the F word though, its very polluting, also know that there are ELF waves mind control frequencies out there that do transmit weird dreams and voice to skull along with anxiety and other symptoms out there, they do target sailors, so don't be too hard on yourself regarding that thanks!
John Paul, I went back and forth about including the clip but decided to do so as it summed up my feelings at the time. I don't normally swear in my videos and don't plan to do so in the future! Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.
Congratulations that was wonderful to witness, can only imagine how it felt!! A real inspiration to the rest of us. Have a great time in the Caribbean. ⛵
Thanks Stephen!
a great passage and very well recorded.Really enjoyable to watch.Congratulations to you Mark , on SV Saphira
Thanks for the lovely comment Niall
Well done on an excellent sailing passage. What an inspiration you are to fellow sailors.
Thanks so much Lee!
Fantastic trip! Well done!
Stunning job. Well done.
Hello, very inspiring story, thank you. Is your boat Halmatic 30, seems to be very good oceanboat, and fast too.
Thanks! Yes she's a halmatic 30, and a quick boat for the size for sure. I was surprised by what a good passagemaker she proved to be
Well done mate, congratulations!
Hi Mark,
Great videos, what an adventure,
I have a Halmatic 30 and am hoping to go offshore this summer, would you mind me some pointers regarding your experience and set up
(Make and model) of your windvane,
Cheers and fair winds,
John
Hi John, thanks! Yes, I have an Aries wind vane, I bought it second hand from someone with a rustler 36. The mounting bars are tubular aluminum, they mount to the transom parallel to it and then bend horizontal. The lazerette locker allows access to through bolt the mounts. I used hardwood backing plates. I didn't rebend the bars from how they were for the rustler, and that's seemed to work fine despite not being completely upright (the rustler has a slightly more inverse transom). That was about it in terms of setup, I hung some blocks off the pushpit to run the steering lines, and more blocks where the spinnaker sheets run to. I used a light chain and the existing tiller pilot attachment on the tiller to clip the chain onto. Let me know if you have any questions on my setup and I'll try to answer in more detail
@@SoloSailingSapphira
Thanks for the info Mark,
Weight is a primary consideration for me, and your set up on Sapphira looks in proportion, I shall keep you posted,
Thanks again,
John
Will done, one day i will do the same 👍
Fair winds, it's a wonderful experience.
BRavooo!! I have a 30' and single handle also. Now in the North of Canada, shopping things for the boat while the winter is here. I think bring my boat down to the french caribean next summer. I really liked your adventure! Congratulation! I am curious to know what you have for equipement on your boat? How many watt is your solar panel, radar, wind turbine, autopilot, etc. Maybe it' could be a nice video ;)
Thanks! I've been waiting till a certain number of people ask me to do a boat video about the setup of Sapphira and the decisions I made. I think it's nearly time to do that! To quickly answer your example questions, I have a 100w solar panel run through my wind gen charge controller, wind gen is a Rutland 1200, I have an Aries wind steering system, a TP10 electric backup tiller pilot. I have a Halo 20 radar but didn't use it much. I will do a video in the next month or so for sure!
@@SoloSailingSapphira Thanks for your answer!! :)) I try to find the best fit for my boat :) I already bought a 200w solar panel with a MPPT 100/20 and i am on the auto-pilot now. I have a wheel so i think to a EVO of Raymarine for that...Anyway, i can't wait for your video! :)
Any updates on your current location or upcoming plans. All the best
I've been sailing around the Caribbean for the past few months, really bad at filming the island hopping. Currently in Guadalupe, the plan is to sail from St Martin to Bermuda in mid to late may. Then Bermuda to Azores in June, Azores to Ireland in August. Will definitely get a video of those passages.
I can’t believe you have so few followers, since you have an amazing sailing channel. One of the best, but then you could try wearing a blonde wig and a bikini top and see if that works.
Thanks Russ, it's all relative I suppose. Starting out 6 months ago I would never have believed I'd get to 5000 followers, delighted with how it's going. Glad you're enjoying it!
Take Care of you. I was asking my self how big / Long your boat is
Thanks Nicole. My boat is 30 foot (9m) long.
Are you using a fishing pole or just line tied to the boat? Excellent work by the way!
I use a handline, wrapped around a Cuban yoyo. 300lb monofilament line. I run a Bungie chord around a stancheon attached to the yoyo to take the snatch loads and warn me when I've got a bite.
@@SoloSailingSapphira thanks
That was epic - fair play! How long are you sailing?
Thanks Phil, do you mean in general or this trip? In general, since I was a child really, but cruising sailing just the last 7 or 8 years. On this trip, I set sail from Ireland last July, and I have until September to get back home!
What were the Mahi Mahi hitting on for you?
They were hitting on cedar lures and on a specific "dorado lure" I bought in Mindelo, in that chandlers/fishing shop away from the sea. Expensive but seems well made. Enormous, but the smaller ones seem happy enough to take it. Big issue was the sargasso, had to clear the lure a lot. They like hiding under the rafts of the stuff apparently so worth persisting.
Bravo zulu
Thanks Mike!
Well done ! Is it expensive per night to moor in Martinique?
Thanks Dave! We've been anchoring everywhere which is free, there aren't many places with mooring balls but I think they are relatively inexpensive. The marina in Le Marin is surprisingly affordable for us as well (small boat). Maybe 25 a night once you factor in water and electric and possibly clearance for a 9m boat.
@@SoloSailingSapphira Wow that's cheaper than i expected . what about do you think martinique is a good place to find a decent fixer upper bluewater sailboat?
@@ponygringo there are definitely a lot of boats around that could use a little TLC, but as I'm not in the market I'm not best placed to say whether it would be worth travelling to try to pick one up
What are the pink sectors on the chart ?
I believe (I could be wrong) that it represents the Exclusive Economic Zone of various countries.
