John the Baptist criticized the marriage since Herod II had basically married his brother's widow (this was against the law, or at least against the moral). Salome then agreed to perform the dance of the seven veils before Herod II, since he had said that, if she did so, he would have rewarded her with anything she wanted. At the end of the dance, Salome asked - probably pushed by her mother - for John the Baptist's head on a silver plate. That's the story from traditional accounts. In the movie, Salome actually dances in order to save John the Baptist's life, but her mother prevents her from doing so by asking for his death during the dance.
