I was searching for engine swap videos. Just got back a junked out g5 with this same engine, you guys make it look easy but for me it will probably take weeks lol
yeah the cobalt is very serviceable and very reliable just like with most cars if you take care of it it'll be reliable! i've put almost 100k on a L61(like this one) since brand new and still running strong and about 25k on a SS/T for the past 3 years no issue there either.
Besides engine swap, the body and suspension on these are super easy to work on. Unlike my Audi A4 which requires me to go into 5 different positions to pull the fender off
The lower control arm bolt isn't easy. They made a cage hold the nut and a lot of times the nut will spin out the cage and you will have to get a torch in there to cut it out.
Nice video fellas and Ambergini. Very fun to watch. It was nice to see that the Cobalt engine can be pulled out of the car and re-installed from the TOP. Seeing as the motor is about 30” tall and you could only get the car 15” off the ground, it is great you can teach people that it isn’t necessary to pull it out the bottom. Lots of people, you fellas included, don’t have access to a lift. Although, in the comments, it appears a LOT of people (assuming they know what they are talking about and not just repeating the comment it should be pulled out from the bottom) actually do have access to a hoist! Not sure why they have the need to say it over and over again that you should pull the engine out the bottom, when it is obvious that there is no hoist in the garage. Again, clearly, it is not that hard pulling it out the TOP, if you have some long ass extensions, some elbows and some patience. Oh and a “Gabe” everyone needs a Gabe. If they have a JR, it is just fun to sit back and watch. Hey you guys should do a RUclips channel on some rookie, backyard mechanics that swap engines to make a few bucks!! Remember I told you what to do when you are Famous! The TOP of the car you say?? Preposterous! Haha, as usual stay safe, and this time enjoy dinner at that Chic Fil place. Eh!
General comment for Mr. John Ross. Love your videos on finding and fixing up fun older cars. One vehicle that was a great driving sporty car, that has been forgotten, is the second generation 93 to 97 Ford probe GT v6 manual. (It redlined above 7,000) Why can’t I find any videos on these cars? And on autotrader, only 3 are for sale nationwide. Just wanted to share for a possible future video for you. Love your channel and videos. Thank you
It's a really nice clean car, and I think it deserves a new life, even if the engine swop was a pain in the rear end, someone will be really happy with it, so well done you for nursing it back to health.

Man this is a 4 hour job. Its not that hard of a motor swap and these engines are a dime a dozen in a junk yard. I buy cobalts and G5s with bad motors or transmissions any time I see them. Easy fix and quick profit.
4hr job if the motor from the yard isnt corroded and need to be cleaned up before installing...... took 10hrs of work on my replacement to get it to a point that it was going to be serviceable long term once installed.
If i remember right, the one hard to get bold in behind the motor (bell housing bolt) doesnt need to be put back in beck there is one right beside and GM calls to leave it out when replacing the motor.
The nice thing about these cars is that you don't need an engine hoist to remove the engine at all. Best way is to jack the car up, then drop the subframe w/engine & tranny out the bottom using 2 jacks onto a piano dolly or two. Then roll it out the front!
Absolutely I was thinking the same.. Seems he is beginning to get more comfortable at least I hope it wasnt just from taken ambrGini to the tip* EitherWay keep it up You Too!!

Start with stuff that will get it back on the road first, then move on to things that are more aesthetic in nature. There are plenty of forums and channels around that will help you succeed in this. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Take your time and make sure you have a system to organize parts as you remove them such as bagging nuts and bolts or using cardboard to keep track of which bolt goes where. Also, make sure you have a torque wrench. Best of wishes to you! 😉🍻
Ive got 325k miles on a chevy cobalt.. Original engine and transmission. Upkeep isn't too bad and have only done minor repairs until fuel lines rusted through.
The Cobalt's ecotec normally is a durable engine that can last 200,000 easy, but in water all bets are off on any engine. Taking one apart seems to be horrible however, thanks for sharing.
Occasionally, I'll scroll down the comments to see what others are saying...2 people are telling you that you should've taken the engine out from underneath - apparently they've never noticed that you and your friends have conventional garages.... And, in my opinion, you don't flip enough cars to warrant getting even a portable lift. But, at least we've got you using jackstands. :D Maybe those know-it-alls can crowdfund you the support necessary to tear down or retrofit your existing garage w/a service pit on one side, & maybe a 6-ton lift on the other - but what do I know? Just be careful - & keep up the good work!
u use the engine lift to lift the car , when u drop out of the bottom leaving subframe on top of the engine lifts legs, but with these cars, u drop the subframes for manuals, but with automatics you can pull from the top
Easier out the top, didn't even unhook the ac lines lol. No need to take much off, just starter, exhashast to manifold bolts, torque converter bolts, bell housing bolts, starter and alternator. Left starter wires attached to starter. Unhooked wiring from engine and Unhooked fuel line.
You are lucky the car didn't fall off the jack stands when you were rocking that engine back and forth like that! 😳😳 It looks like it turned out great though! I can't wait to hear about the Audi soon too though, it's been awhile.

Cobalt's suck. I had one with 90k miles and the timing chain tensioner had enough slack in it to allow the exhaust valves on cylinder 4 to touch the piston and bend them both. I spent quite a bit of time removing the head and replacing the valves and seats and then replacing all the timing components in my little two car garage with a boat in the other bay with pretty much nothing more than a basic socket set 😂 was still in high school at the time and didn't have a lot of money. Sold the car after I fixed it tho. Still on the road.
i was about to swap the engine on my cobalt when i bought another running cobalt for the same price as a junkyard engine so i decided to scrap my old cobalt for half my money back on the new car, way easier lol. I still want to learn to swap an engine one day though : /

I didn’t think the base cobalt had the 2.4 as a optional engine. That was only available on the upper level Saturn ion (ion 3 2.4). My dad and I pulled a engine and trans from a Saturn VUE AWD it took just under 5 hours and wasn’t too bad

Had an 07 payed $200 lasted me a year. Engine and transmission still run mint. Just leaks out the fuel lines and needs front end stuff. Still a tank TBH.
Gave a like for the my humps song reference. Loved the banter between the two of you! 😂
"This is not serviceable"
Suzuki SX4's 2.0L: **laughs in exhaust manifold blocking the oil filter**
Nice job on the swap.
so my only question out of this whole video is did you pull the harmarnce balancer for clearance
I highly doubt we pulled the balancer... easier to fight an engine/trans than try to get any balancer off 🍻
I didn’t think the base cobalt had the 2.4 as a optional engine. That was only available on the upper level Saturn ion (ion 3 2.4). My dad and I pulled a engine and trans from a Saturn VUE AWD it took just under 5 hours and wasn’t too bad
Gotta love the letterkenny reference at the end lmao
Cheddix / Hydrox:😉🍻
13:29 Best part of the video when she appears
I was just thinking.... Yea, but who's the hotty?
Dudes. Nice engine lift. Low profile legs, but has some height. Can you share the make and model?
Ryan MacEwen: I’ll find out.
The new engine is worth more than the whole car, lol.
Yeah I want to know what he gets for it. It looks showroom new condition in the video but Cobalt's have almost zero resale value.
@@XxscremoFTWxX Yeah if it was an SS that would be a score
near end of vid: It sounds like it's got the Chrysler tick!
Dave Thompson well since it is a Chrysler product it seems to be right lol.
@@ethandonivan8927 Are you okay? The big bowtie is not chysler.
James I thought he was talking about the vw mini van lol
@@ethandonivan8927 He was
Matt S. Oh ok then I was right lmao. I didn’t think the Chevy every had the tik in the vid.
5:14 Immediately thought of Doug Demuro

Gabe’s van got the lifter tap on the 3.6l😂
Edit: didn’t realize he pointed it out😂
J Thomas: Yup... been putting it off. LOL! 😉🍻
Gabe needs to check the rocker shafts in his van. The pin shears and causes that ticking noise.
stuck hydroulic lifter...
Jereme Sommers: Yeah, I’m tracking. Been avoiding it cause I’m gonna replace the left cylinder head.
Cheers friend!😉🍻
MrBugsier5: Nope. It’s a design flaw that starves the rockers. Gonna replace the left cylinder head.
He will have to reset the air bag after unhooking the trodle body it’s. Part of the safety system That controlled by the gas pedal scencer anything related to saftys such as. Light s. Abs brakes even your third break light in the trunk. Will bring on the airbag ligjt
I just ordered that speaker! Sounds pretty good and its a hell of a discount! The wheeled volume control sold me!
Brian Esparza: It is a really cool unit. You’re gonna be happy with it!
I have to put the hood back on my car. Can I get the use of your assistant to help me too? LOL.
He called that a cavalier?! That is pretty much the C8 prototype.. Its super high performance from GM!!
Jim Loucks 😂😂😂
What do you do with the old engine? (haul it to junk yard? Recycle it? ???)
Ram14250: Recyclers

Its a Rome Thing Everyday: 😉👍🏼
thanks ferda!
I drive a cobalt xfe and I have almost 150,000 miles
Still a boring car, the "SS" is the only Cobalt that is worth something the rest meh...
Got one too. The suspension is trash tho
At 6:16 we have a shot of Amber and what sounds like a fish fryer full of grease roasting in the background. Perhaps the washer and dryer for this humble abode lies in the garage?
Virtual Vapes he did say “let’s eat!”
Virtual Vapes: The refrigerator’s compressor was giving up the ghost.
@@Gabe-ABNCW3 Wouldn't you know it. You guys probably know how to fix that too. Wouldn't get as many views, but I'd be in tears if you did a video on repairing it. Up next...fridges gives up the ghost and gets a second chance in life. HaHa! You could do a compressor swap on it, but first fill up the old compressor with maple syrup or the like.
Virtual Vapes: 😂😂🤣😂
