They work well for the money. I installed these type of Radio’s in 2 Ford Work Vans I own. One a 2003 E350 and the other a 2000 E150. They haven’t let me down at all and it’s been 3-4 years already that they have been mounted in them. Not as good as my Kenwoods I put in other vehicles but I have no complaints.
I don’t know what happened to my second reply here for those asking many questions about installing either this Double Din Receiver or any other brand in one of the later cars built in the 2000’s. Not every car can this radio be installed into without a interface. The interface is required to communicate with the computer in todays cars in order for them to work correctly. Trust me I installed many Car Stereo’s over the years going back to the late 1960’s until present. I mention above about installing this Receiver with CarPlay into 2 Ford work Vans above that I still own. They were easy. Just a factory harness adapter to fit both Vans and a file to the dash and they looked like they were installed from the Factory. No interface required on those 2 Vehicle’s made in 2000 and 2003. I made them also open up with the Ford Motor Company Insignia in the 7” Screen of the Radio upon Start Up not mentioned here. This radio has that Capability and can do other makes. I also installed 4 Kenwood Double Din 7” Receivers. 2 were installed in other Ford Vehicles. One a 2000 Mercury Marquis and one a 2007 Mustang. Neither of these 2 vehicles required a Interface either. They easily connected with a factory wire harness adapter for the stereo to be wired to the stereo wiring like the other vehicles I did then they plugged right into the factory wiring on the vehicle. The last two were also Kenwood 7” Double Din Receivers that I installed into a C5 and C6 Generation Corvette. These vehicles required a Interface to connect and talk to the factory computer. Without a interface they can’t be installed properly in those cars. Hopefully this post will stay up for those who care to read it for their benefit when installing a replacement receiver in their car. My suggestion find out if your car needs a Interface. Usually if you deal with Crutchfield they will tell you online what is needed for your vehicle.

This was the first link to pop up when i googled installing a carplay radio in a 2010 cobalt for my girlfriend. We're considering trying it out. Thanks for making a thorough and clear walkthrough of the install
When I had my cobalt I bought so many kits trying to find the perfect kit, I had the same one u had and broke it accidentally 😂 ended up using a lil extra faceplate that came w the radio and just got it as close to the edge as possible
We were told the Cobalt had to have a separate kit to install in the computer so it would know the radio wasn't stolen . It seemed like you didn't have to reprogram the ECM at all !!! I've done a lot of radio installsin older stuff and was stopped cold . We have an '07 Cobalt . Interesting watching your install .
Most late cars even as early as 2006 need a interface you need to buy extra that the replacement radio needs to be wired into in order to talk to the cars computer to do the job correctly. I put 2 Kenwood 7” Double Din Radios in a ‘99 C5 and a 2006 C6 Generation Corvettes that required interfaces being their computers were so advanced in those cars. Put a 7” Double Din Receiver in a 2007 Mustang and needed nothing special just a wire harness adapter and face plate adapter for the dash but most all cars today need a interface. Try to do the job without one you will never get it right something won’t work right not being able to communicate with the cars 🚗 computer.
Great video. Makes me REALLY appreciate my install guy. He can do ANYTHING!!! Dash cam, GPS tracker, remote start, etc. I have a 1999 Toyota in great shape, but the radio is crap and no back up camera. Having him put in a similar radio (119 on Amazon) with Apple Carplay, backup camera, and I love that I will have a USB port for charging my phone. May as well have him put in some more usb ports. What ever he charges, it will be well worth it.
I've installed one of these. one of the wires fell out of the radio plug around 3 months after install and nearly caught the car of fire. it melted the plastic plug and started to smell so i pulled it and when i saw all the melted plastic i tossed it in the trash.
There is no impedance mismatch problem just as long as the speaker wires are not shorted together. Car stereos are designed for 4 or 8 ohm speakers. An open circuit will have infinite resistance, so no current flow, so output amplifier is safe.
Ok, the irony in finding this video in my recommended tab is amazing. I have the same model and year car and was thinking about changing the radio. Thanks for showing me how too

I can say for certain what your situation is with your car but... in every car there are two kinds of power. Constant and auxiliary. It sounds like you have hooked up your head unit to constant power but you need to hook it up to auxiliary power. www.techguys.ca/howto/power.html Good luck
@@retrotechandelectronics this was the issue. I was using a newer module. It had to load in the right sequence. I finished up last night and everything works great…. For the cheapest radio you can find on Amazon with car play that is! Now I have to change the from speakers.
This is a great video. I'm impressed with your knowledge on installations. The visual interface of this unit and features appear to be nice. And at this price! I have to admit that for me personally (skill level Novice) the work and time involved with this kind of install is more than what I want to tackle. I have done many car stereo installs and I have had only success with Crutchfield which sells plug-and-play system kits ready to rock in minutes. I pay more, but I don't have any issues with trial and error. I also don't have the tools and skills to hardwire such a unit. If I pay $80 for this type of unit, and have you install it, I may be looking at $300 bucks in labor.
I'm not above using the cheapest option, but the reason I wouldn't do that for a car stereo is because it's very possible for it to not be able to power the speakers properly so they won't sound as good as they could, unless you're going to put them through an amp anyway in which case just ignore me lol
2 things! I want a leather or vinyl boot for my emergency brake handle, I dislike the massive plastic piece!!! I have a 07 G5 & when I installed my 4G wifi cd/DVD/mp3 & every other option 2 din, it was a nightmare finding a interface that works! A problem with touchscreen radios is that the screen is plastic and after a year or so it gets oxidized and gets cloudy to the point its hard to view in daylight. I finally picked at it until it peeled away. Under it is nice clear glass! So now you need to use the remote to adjust and change channels.

Purely out of curiosity, I've bought the cheap Chinese radios before from Amazon and Ebay... Their version of "double din" isn't the same as name brands like Sony, Pioneer and Kenwood. So unless you buy the install kit directly from a company in China, you'll always have to modify the part of the install kit that the radio fits through.
I want one for my emergency brake, I dislike the oversized plastic mess. I've gone so long with it bare & when I purchased the original plastic piece, I can't stand it. .I just want a leather or vinyl boot on my E-brake handle!!!
I tried two separate wires on my 07 G5 & neither allowed my radio to shut off via the ignition/opening the door with key removed. I must manually shut it off each time I exit the vehicle.
What i like though was your detailed oriented explanation and installation tricks. I was impatient and tried trimming the din kit with drammel and did a awful job. Well lack of patience. Thank you you learned a few tricks i being a DIY guy👍🏻😎
@@retrotechandelectronics Could you possibly do me a favor and check to see if any a.m. radio stations come in at all? If you don’t mind me asking, where roughly are you located? There’s a dozen if not more a.m. radio stations coming out of the city and i received none. In fact Crutchfield is starting to get backstock and before I make any purchase with them I’ll be confirming that these radios that they are selling received a.m. I really don’t want to have to do another splice into the harness and then have to cut it and send it back one more time. 2 questions. What stereo interface are you using? I tried 2 others & one worked but constantly shorted out within the interface harnessrite where it plugs into that interface! Second one works perfectly but, I have No dinger tone for turn signals, warning tone's for seatbelt & turn signal!!! Second question, which wire did you tap into on the reverse light, what color is the positive wire on the reverse light? (Light green)...Thank you!
Just for curiosity, what was wrong with the factory radio? Mine hates sudden temperature changes, especially heat. Eject doesn't work, and some of the face keys won't work. If I park my car in the shade in the summer, and keep a heat lamp inside if below 20⁰, everything works fine. I keep a towel to cover my dash if I park in the sun and crack my windows.
The display would go out, I would have to tap it 20 times or so for it to go back on, and it would stay for a while. A lot of work to keep a 14 year old radio going..
I'm not sure which is more impressive, your skills or tenacity. Stay safe and healthy!

The install in thie model year was not particularly easy, Other cars had bolt in kits for this awkwardly sized radio.
Labor 1 hour $60
Polishing a turd! 🙌😎🙌 Good job Jordan.
Well find out if it’s truly a turd when the review is completed.
If that’s you in the pic, you the turd
I'm not above using the cheapest option, but the reason I wouldn't do that for a car stereo is because it's very possible for it to not be able to power the speakers properly so they won't sound as good as they could, unless you're going to put them through an amp anyway in which case just ignore me lol
2 things! I want a leather or vinyl boot for my emergency brake handle, I dislike the massive plastic piece!!! I have a 07 G5 & when I installed my 4G wifi cd/DVD/mp3 & every other option 2 din, it was a nightmare finding a interface that works! I went to Crutchfield & their pac 3 kept shorting out, I ended up getting a Walmart interface but, None of the dabs system works! No turn signals or indication chimes but, the radio works! What interface works (radio & dabs) on 07 models?????
I posted the interface in the video.... Thats the only interface for such a setup.
@@retrotechandelectronics Your Cobalt is a 08, my G5 is a 07...07 & 08 have differences from the 06 & older models! (Automatic transmissions from older models will not work!) Anywho, with the Scosche GM13sr (2004-up GM 11-Bit Lan sterio interface), Does everything work properly, the turn signal ding, & all other notifications from the BCM & the dabs unit? I Purchased several! One from Crutchfield, & 2 others from the internet, then after all had their issues, (the cheaper unit from Crutchfield) it did work but, it would short out constantly, I meant to return it but, working nightshift Nothing is open when I get out of work so, I kept forgetting to return it....ended up getting a interface from Walmart but, the chimes from the dabs unit, do not work! Another issue that I am having is, the radio not shutting off with the key/opening the driver door! I know the basic wiring kits w/out a interface come with a separate power wire to run to the fuse box. Does that scosche have a switched power out? I must manually turn my radio off or run the battery dead.
@@retrotechandelectronics Are you saying, thats the only interface that works properly on the 07 & up Cobalt, G5, HHR, Ion & Vue? Because, there are many interfaces that claim to work on these vehicle's & I tried several! The cheaper unit from Crutchfield did work properly until I made a turn, I should take it apart & find the short but, I will order the Scosche gm13sr. I wish I would have seen this video much sooner, Could have saved 💵!!!
A problem with touchscreen radios is that the screen is plastic and after a year or so it gets oxidized and gets cloudy to the point its hard to view in daylight. I finally picked at it until it peeled away. Under it is nice clear glass! So now you need to use the remote to adjust and change channels.
I have not yet noticed any such problem, ill be on the lookout.
@@retrotechandelectronics My 1.5din radio is a Power Acoustic.
“Choose your own adventure…” 😂😂😂
😂😂😂 what a night mire bruh....but you kept with it good job my guy
Thanks.
Man I wish you all would show the audio control weather or not it's got Lpf and Hpf frequency?
Great video, thank you.
Just wondering if you have an update on the head unit, is it still working without any issues and would you recommend it or is it worth saving the money and buying a more reputable brand of head unit?
Thanks.
It still works. I would recommend it for a car that has a resale of less than 1000$
Seriously i have just got one of these and been searching hours for the fitting of even basic stuff and the one i bought came up!!! Amazing ha ... sounds thick but do i take the old harnesses out ?? im no good at this and have nobody to help me, its going in an off road discovery
Hello i have a 2006 Chevy suburban im having a problem with wining noise when ignition is on and stereo memory what do i have to rewire? Thank you.
This video was great 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
What is that interface box and is it necessary? Will an aftermarket radio not work without it?
I would not recommend an aftermarket radio without it.
@@retrotechandelectronics well what's it actually called? Like what would I search for specifically lol thx for your quick response btw
...and what is the remote control for? Mine did not include it.
The remote does the same functions as the radio head, remotely
I cut my plugs so now I gotta match the wires and I have a few extras and I can’t figure out what they go to
Mine turns on goes to radio screen for about 2 seconds then shut off? I have only Black (ground), yellow (B+ power supply) and orange (Parking) connected. Any thoughts? I would really appreciate some help. Thank you for the video.
thanks for the video, do you think that in a cobalt 2006 ls have to do the same procedure.
If the 2006 has the same centre console, it should be similar.
I bought a wire harness for a 2006 chevy cobalt. I got a pioneer radio. Now watch this video I might need to buy a harness with T blocks. Can you need me out?.
I just got an atoto head unit for my 09 cobalt off Amazon and I got the Walmart wiring harness because I don’t care about the turn signal/ seat belt sound and I’m so confused on what I do with the 12volt fuse wire? I wired up the rest of the stereo but haven’t installed because I have no clue where it goes, no sub/ back up camera, I’m simply just installing for functionality
The control box does a lot more than turn signal and seat belt.
I was very comprehensibly scared during home setup of the car touchscreen on table 14.9 direct volt required radio so I thought I'm gonna do a same Sony xplod yellow wire and red wire both times one twist the copper wire together and black wire yet alone for minus I connected the radios plus and minus to the interchangeable ac adapter alternating current adapter the welcome and screen illuminated powered on I have a 6.5 speaker with a 8" apex audio bazooka carpeted ported speaker with a polyeura woofer the bass on the radio is lowered to zero the treble is turned up on the way the balance fader is center the brightness is turned down with the contrast I love the sound and or good sound thank you for the birthday present the following requres a screen protector antenea thankyou
I found that out the hard way.
i've been waiting for this tutorial that shows how to run the wire for the camera through the lisence plate, thanks
No problem!
Nice wiring job very clean work👍
Thanks 👍
Does local car places install aftermarket radios and back up cameras for u?
Local Auto stereo shops do, for a price.
@@retrotechandelectronics ok thx do u know which place does it?
@@AColWRLD Ask your local dealer, they generally contract their stuff out
where did you get the shift boot and the shift know? I have been looking for one
It was some generic one from pep boys I bought rears ago and modified to fit the car
I want one for my emergency brake, I dislike the oversized plastic mess. I've gone so long with it bare & when I purchased the original plastic piece, I can't stand it. .I just want a leather or vinyl boot on my E-brake handle!!!
U can use a razor blade & carefully trim the plastic on the rear of the mounting kit & it will work.
Did u attach the reverse wire to your reverse light?
I tried two separate wires on my 07 G5 & neither allowed my radio to shut off via the ignition/opening the door with key removed. I must manually shut it off each time I exit the vehicle.
So does this install still work the computer readings for the car like the oil and what not that is displayed on the original radon-screen?
Yes
What i like though was your detailed oriented explanation and installation tricks. I was impatient and tried trimming the din kit with drammel and did a awful job. Well lack of patience. Thank you you learned a few tricks i being a DIY guy👍🏻😎
Glad it helped
My only question about the radio itself is, is it Bluetooth as well??
Yes it also has bluetooth, though ive tested it, i never use it.
Hey man. Another question. Do you know if it has xm radio as well?
great install
Thanks.
So I’m guessing either no AM radio or poor radio reception? I’ve been down this same road twice only to find out the AM reception is nonexistent.
Yeah, we do not have a ton of AM where I am...
@@retrotechandelectronics Could you possibly do me a favor and check to see if any a.m. radio stations come in at all? If you don’t mind me asking, where roughly are you located? State or anything like that so I have an idea as to what we’re dealing with. I am 20 miles outside of New York City so that’s how bad the reception was on some of these radios that I had purchased. Thanks in advance
@@mcribs7811 this model doesn’t have am functionality
Hey, I am not the smartest of people, but i have a question about the soldering part, im looking at ebay at a gm13sr and it has rca cables, is that normal? and radio harness would best kits2102 radio harness work? i have no idea what i am doing
Is the volume changer on the wheel still functional ?
My model did not have remotes on the wheel, however this radio does have provisions for it.
Did I not list it in the video and the comments.
D.j, what is the name of the interface you used that has no dinger tone? I want that one as those tones annoy me.
How did you connect CarPlay with your phone, mine just says connecting...
Is the config SET to autoplay?
Does your key fob work still with the new radio
I do not have a fob, old school
Just for curiosity, what was wrong with the factory radio? Mine hates sudden temperature changes, especially heat. Eject doesn't work, and some of the face keys won't work. If I park my car in the shade in the summer, and keep a heat lamp inside if below 20⁰, everything works fine. I keep a towel to cover my dash if I park in the sun and crack my windows.
The display would go out, I would have to tap it 20 times or so for it to go back on, and it would stay for a while. A lot of work to keep a 14 year old radio going..
I want to do this with my 2015 Chevy IMPALA LS but I'm scared I'm gonna screw it all up more than it's worth. I have no electrical experience at all.
