A 600HP Chevy Cobalt SS is a Type R's Worst Nightmare

- ZZperformance who has mastered the Ecotec engine platform was kind enough to throw me the keys to "SNOBALT" - a 600WHP front wheel drive monster that would even make a Dodge Neon SRT-4 blush. After driving a Chevy Cobalt SS with ZZperformance bolt ons as well as the Saturn Ion Redline - I figured we could take this platform to the limit and see just how great the ecotec is when you have a blank check. So let's go for a drive and see just how gnarly this beast is.

This thing was a rumble strip hunter.
in 3rd gear you should have 3/4 pedal it then 700rpm before redline floor the gas, half a second later flat foot shift the 4th 😉
just wait. I'm putting this engine (though not as tuned) into my saab 9-5 wagon. once I prove i can get it running and driving im getting zzp parts for it heh.
So weird seeing you driving a car I used to see all the time. My dad used to be a mechanic for zzp
@@mizinoinovermyhead.7523 Or go the easy route and get urself an early SAAB B234 Longblock..
@@jesperviktorsson8027 nah already have the lnf and the f35 transmission is already in the car.
So this is what maxing out the Cobalt in Most Wanted looks like in real like.
Lmao I was just about to make a similar comment because I beat the game with one when I was a kid 🤣
That cobalt SS was the first and only car you needed to beat that game. It was majestic. I also had one IRL but was too poor to mod it. I regret parting with it.
@@YoursTrulyMew You ain't the only one. Beat the game and then start a new game with all the money you earned by only using a Cobalt.
😂I totally agree !!!
And it's track ready, looks like an endurance car.
Imagine you're at a light in your hellcat and suddenly a cobalt comes up and sends you on a one way trip to gapplebees. This is why car culture is best culture.
He’s like watch this I’m gonna smoke this cobalt to his buddy
Lol any modified hellcat would smoke that thing like it didnt existed..if you compare modified car to stock one you havent understood the game yet x)
@@freddykruger1086 cobalt weighs like half of a hellfat
@@BullittKid08 it’s gon be gone by the time that fat ass boat hits the water 💀 aka catch traction

This is proof you can make absolutely anything look great if you know what your doing
And have the money for it yea its easy
Your definition of “look great” is definitely more a opinion 😂
@@SkarryTerry clearly you aren't into track toys then 🤷🏼
@@Cutthroat__ I mean.. yeah I guess. But something like this can be built over time and honestly, other than going through motors, I'd bet they only have 10-15k into this thing
@@budgetbuilt8838 I am, I know they’re not beating RSX’s, EK/EJ’s, S-Chassis’s, Evo’s and many other JDM time attack beasts, especially at Tsukuba. Not a big fan of how the hood doesn’t flush down, or they left it open.. These are sleepers for sure, but like this, glad it’s a shop car.
Man, I remember wanting a Cobalt SS so badly when I first got my license. They’re just really cool and unexpectedly good driving cars! This one in particular is NUTS!
As a Cobalt SS owner, it's nice to finally see the platform get some attention
manual or automatic ss?
if it was RWD it would probably get more attention
Fiesta ST gang for the win
LT owner here, same!
When you gonna LS swap it?
This literally looks like something I would have built in need for speed pro street and I absolutely love it. Wish I had funds for something like this
More like Most wanted
It looks amazing
yup. us men always pick interests we aint got the bread for 🤣 for me its more so car audio. im not so much of a gear head and mainly a basshead, but do appreciate watching this stuff and admire it all. i want a walled off suv on 10s of 1000s of watts but i dont have 1000s of dollars hahaha. one day il get there. gotta be patient. woild be sick to have the thrill of owning a fun car like that for sure. i wonder what its like. never experianced a fast car yet
@@richyoung4051 money is why my main hobby is motorcycles, incredible performance for cheap!! Also fun to tinker with :)
Right? The Cobalt was definitely in my lil "garage" back then lol
I've always kinda liked the Cobalt and the SRT4s, smaller cars have been my thing, hence my old 09 mini cooper you reviewed years ago. I've upgraded a bit since then now driving a '19 G70 RWD 3.3t with 450whp and a little over 500 ft-lbs of torque. It's such a comfortable but fast car and even does amazing in the mountains
That torque sure does sound nice
This video brings a tear to my eye.
You guys built a beast!
This car brings a tear to my d!ck
A 600hp cobalt is any car worst nightmare
As someone who owned a mid 500hp Cobalt, they are far from anyones worst nightmare
Zzp’s shit is insane my 2.0t ATS has 500whp they can make some crazy stuff with under the radar cars like these
@@AZ_CRUISING lol. 500hp is enough to go 7s 60-130mph. That is no doubt someone's worst nightmare.
@J.W. Presents yeah, a bolt on C6Z, congratulations, I suggest you take your 7 sec 60-130 to the dragy forums, theyll drag you like no tomorrow

Love the drum and bass intro. Totally gave me driving games vibes.
The legendary Snobalt. That car is a legend in the Ecotec community. I'm proud to say I've seen it in person.
ZZP is always building weird shit and I love it
Super underrated platform. Especially the engine. This thing is put together very well. I think they would have sold a shit ton more if it was AWD or RWD. We have a local one that is RWD LS swapped that I see at the track sometimes. Oddest swap I've seen in a while.
The Kappa platform cars with the 2.0T Ecotecs are exactly that. Too bad GM didn’t advertise them so only a small number were sold.
@@nicholaswendt8159 was just about to respond with this. All I could think about during this video was the gxp and redline cars
Gm used the 2.0l or iterations of the 2.0l in many cars after, regal gs, cadillac ats, saab 9-3, solstice gxp, you name it.
Cobalt SS's have a habit of throwing repairs at owners. Fun little cars, but they can get pricey to maintain. My supercharged SS that I had years ago had the most expensive oil change costs of any car I've owned. My Mustang I have now was cheap until the oil issue over the last 2 years, so I can only imagine how bad the SS would have been.
@@joshuakhaos4451 my 09 ss has had very little needed in terms of maintenance. Amd my oil change is mobil 1 full synthetic so i buy the good stuff, but when you want a car to run for a long time you take care of it.
I always wanted a Cobalt SS after Need For Speed had it as a beginner car. I kept that thing until it was basically impossible to win lol. The one car GM never built was the Chevy Cruze SS. The Cheverolet racing Team dominated overseas with 1,2,3 finishes for years.
Back in 2013 I had a bolt on trifecta tuned cruze. It was never dyno'd but on a back road it was very fast for a tiny 1.4. I probably had the only gutted chevy cruze in existence back then, good times LOL. I always wished there was an SS cruze but it makes sense they never built one considering the cobalt SS didn't sell well and they probably would have had to charge 25k plus for an SS version(I paid about 16k for my eco brand new).
Shame they didn’t do anything with the cruz it’s actually a good car
You are so right. Those Cruzes overseas were amazing and dominated!
I remember bringing it with me to the end! Upgrades are a godsend.
@@spcnearyI have a bolt on tuned 2.0 regal I love it lol
As a Grand Rapids native I was having more fun identifying exactly where you were driving and the route you were taking then the car itself I see snobalt almost everyday going to and from work I already knew it was a monster
Never thought I'd see a Suped up Cobalt SS, I've gotten obsessed with Cobalts ever since I've had my LT this is wicked
Never thought a Chevy Cobalt could look _this_ good
I always chose this thing back in Need for Speed Most Wanted, the supercharger sounded soo good. Wish we had these things in Australia, very cool car.
Literally fit into the game
Wish we had Holden's here in America, I want a RWD supercharged 3800 so bad
@@sazzyPheox Can't you get 3800s in F Body's? Obviously not supercharged though
@@niko1600 you can get the L36 Naturally aspirated ones, but if you use a FWD supercharger, the intake is on the wrong side, facing the firewall. And if you somehow manage to get a RWD intake that bends back around, the firewall and cowl are too close to the top of the engine that it doesn't fit unless you modify the body, lots of work done. Since the engine sits so far back under the windshield. Some people have supercharged Camaros and firebirds and they're pretty cool!
what a crazy ass car! i was fortunate enough to meet the owner way back in the day, he's a super cool dude and has probably owned this thing since 2008. its an incredible build.
I've always wanted a cobalt thanks to nfs most wanted 05. Car had huge potential from the beginning
"Liv-er-e" also cars you don't expect much from proving you wrong is probably one of my favorite things
I’ve been using my cobalt as a daily for 6 years now. I absolutely love it. Only problem I’ve had was a clutch and flywheel replacement bc I serve too many gapatizers. But now that I got my kw service truck I’m putting the cobalt to rest for some time. The snobalt is bananas and it really inspires me as a cobalt owner. 600hp is high for me but I wouldn’t mind 450 to the wheels.
I want to see someone take the motor from a 2012 Impala slap a turbo on it and make it fit in a Cobalt.
@@darksu6947 shit I wanna do to mine so bad. One day hopefully
I love ZZP and this shows what they can do. I'm a Wbody guy but I enjoy dealing with this company so much I'm looking for something else they support. Cobalt ss, Ion recline, Cruze, Buick GS, ect. Love this company!!! Congrats ZZP on having the Dude in Blue test/drive one of the beasts. Next Zooms GTP, or Bo's GS please 🙏
@Saucy 345 i agree 🤣
@Saucy 345 im a BNR person myself
@Saucy 345 😂😂😂 who is it that ran a 10.9 in a Sonic, and who is stuck all the way back at 13.4? Who’s made nearly 600whp on the 1.4? Who holds every record in the LTG market? And the Ecotec market? Huh, don’t think it’s BNR….
H-body isn't too different from W-body if you are scared of anything too different 😂 I love my bonneville lol
It doesn't get much easier to make reliable power than the LNF/LHU platform. Factory wideband ECU, easy to tune boost control and since you can use an LT4 HPFP you can push the DI system to 600hp on E85. It is a hell of a capable platform.
What?
@@PeterFeltersnatch852 It's an easy car to tune and make fast. It's always been the cheapest DI 4cyl to get power out of.

Love the Cobalt SS content so much David, these cars remind me of my time with mine in my early 20s. So many memories of roadtrips and general stupidity with friends lol.
I'm really getting back into these cars after having been through it with the reliability issues that Cobalt SS's tend to surprise owners with. These cars are so much fun and very different from many other cars you see on the road and at meets.
I bought a new tint coat red cobalt SS in 06, great car and fun, sold it a couple years later and needed something bigger after my wife was pregnant with our 1st son. Will always have love for the cobalt, I had the SC model but the Turbo model changed the game for that car
I own a 05 Cobalt SS and love every min of it. Wish I had more money to make these type of mods and a trustworthy shop to take care of it all. The car was given to me by my brother at my lowest point in my life and i will love this vehicle forever.
So happy to see the cobalt getting the love it always deserved. And it’s cool to see us Michiganders going crazy with the cars !!!!
I'm not kidding when I type this. I've waited since the SS Cobalt was released for some individual to man up and make this. It looks good.
Whoever designed that livery is awesome, it looks seriously good. Eye catching, not obnoxious, ZZP branding, 👌
I remember the Cobalt SS existed back then cause it was in Need For Speed Most Wanted 2005 and it’s always the go-to car that I always start with when I start a new story mode. The only thing I remember about the Cobalt was it was a Supercharger instead of a Turbo in the game. In real life through my childhood, I never saw a Cobalt SS version on the street when I was growing up, but I do see some Cobalt base model versions only. I guess the SS version is kinda rare here in California 🤷♂️
Im looking at a Saturn Sky Redline, same engine but mated to a 5l40 transmission, ZZP has tons of goodies for that platform as well
I had a 2006 Cobalt and really liked it for a compact car, would've loved to have gotten a Cobalt SS. This Cobalt is the Nutzzz
ZZP is such a good company can’t give em nothing but thumbs up, made my HHR LT sound pretty rowdy and shoot little baby flames so no complaints
The Ecotech was and is one of the most powerful 4 bangers ever made. GM developed the engine in there drag racing program. If people only knew what it was capable of. It just didn’t have that JDM flair or awd. I have old magazines of just how powerful and insane a ecotech can be. We’re talking 1200-2000hp
Wow the intro was amazing. Really grave me 2016 review vibes.
Also I had to read the title a few times lol
This car and NFS Most Wanted made me love cobalts. Now I have one and I love it. Such a fun car.
This made me want to get a cobalt SS lol this thing is sick!
So happy to see ZZP on here..cobalts all day
For oddball GM rigs, I'd love to see a feature done of the HHR SS if you could find one, especially a panel wagon version
We got one at zzp!
Or a good sorted LSJ-T redline on here.
Always like that panel van HHR SS. My neighbor had one a few years ago. Very cool unique quick car
When the HHR SS was still pretty new and unknown I knew someone who had a red one with light mods that used to beat up on local mustang gt owners. It was pretty funny people did not see it coming at all.
I want to see a 2012 Impala with a turbo on it.
that cobalt actually doesnt suck, I am impressed.
I had a 2004 Corsa with the z12xe ecotec (1200cc) engine and even that sounded pretty mean without exhaust although mine was completely stock, it’s a pretty good platform and a reasonable reliable engine and I’ve seen people do some crazy stuff with these cars and motors, I loved that car
Different engines. not related sadly. 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 all the same family but it ends there.
It looks the same but isn’t it the same family as the 1600 and 1800cc engines? I remember they are very different internally
thank you OPEL Z20 motors always slap
Different engines
Holy mackerel!! Yes yes yes another cobalt video 😍😍😍I'm in love ❤️
Just purchased an 09! Loving it!
Never thought i'd like a Cobalt. This car looks great!
Had at least one cobalt for 13 years. Seen this thing up close at Tail of the Dragon in 18. The things people sleep on I tell you
I’ve been waiting for you to review this car lokey. I love zzp; love the cobalt platform. It’s just a great street car all around when done right!
Makes me miss my nitrous powered Sunfire and the Jbod community.
Remember, the ecotec is a relative of the Quad 4 days. If you don't know what the Quad 4 is/was, look up the Oldsmobile Aerotech. I worked as a CNC operator at one of the two shops responsible for making one of the engines. We had it on a display stand (the engine). It was single turbo and made something like 800-900hp on high octane *pump* gas and iirc, 1000-1100hp on methanol.
Had a Trailblazer SS that thing was awesome, I miss the hell out of it.
I want one, But damn they held their values and have stayed out of reach
Ahhh this is the first car I bought in nfs most wanted and maxed the heck out of this thing
So glad that Grand Rapids and ZZP are finally getting recognized in the car world
I notice you're at their shop. Hopefully you got to record some of their other shop vehicles while you were out there!
My 2009 only has 500hp but I have a ZZP race engine . Car has 10300 original miles
Redline owner here… Saturns still exist and yeah, if you forgot about the Cobalt..you have no idea what I’m talking about and I love love it LOL
this cobalt really gives off NFS most wanted vibes 🤣🔥
I gotta say, the cobalt is kinda the perfect tuner car. It's reasonably sized, lots of power potential, cheap parts, and ridiculously easy to drive
My first impression would be Ricer, but that thing is serious
This was the car I wanted in highschool. Now I want to build one of these. This is insane.
I'm not a cobalt fan but damn that thing is gorgeous. Racecar😭
Yes!!! Thanks for mentioning the Saturn Redline. Pretty sure the Cobalt SS has the same engine as all of those Saturn Ions from 06-07.
Funny enough I went to a cars and coffee this past weekend and found this guy with a 700 hp dodge srt4 made for hpde events. Made me think I wonder if there a cobalt/cavalier or escort/Taurus around this hp and sure enough you post a video lol

David, you have to remember my silver Cavalier back in VaBeach. I had that sound before the cobalt! Back when your channel was just starting.
I learned stick on a '06 Cobalt SS NA 2.4. cheap as I paid for it ($1,000) I wish I had a longer time with that car, it was the most fun I ever had driving. Just sitting in the car and listening to the killer sound system made this car worth it. I want another one.
I’ve actually owned two. They were great little cars, put a ton of miles on both of them over the years and they never quit on me, never left me stranded even once. They’re easy to work on, parts are cheap and even the base model was in the higher end of its class in terms of hp and torque.
I miss pre 2010 GM. So many interesting, affordable cars that actually had personality and weren’t bogged down with unnecessary “tech” (gm LOVES that word) I wouldn’t touch a post 2009 GM with a barge pole
I love the cobalt ss. I have a 400hp lnf cobalt that I use for time attack and auto x racing.
Ahhhhh yes. I dont know how i missed this video, i had waited years for someone to lend you a cobalt to drive.
My '09 ss tc just hit 100k miles finally😭 fixin her up to sell in the next couple months.
Do the Cadillac ATS from ZZP next!
I can't believe people are doing this to cobalts. I used to think they where cheap and ugly. Now I see the potential
A mechanic I used to work with put this similar engine setup in a Baja Bug he built, it was stupid fast and would pull the front wheels on a hard launch. This car was immaculate, even every single bolt was treated or coated.
Discovered ZZP when I was trying to get 3800 engines to survive my stupidity. They've never let me down.
I still see quite a few Cobalt SSs rollin around the 757. almost feels like they're making a weird come back
A 600 HP Cobalt SS, worst nightmare for the type r, finally something domestic that the import fears.
I love this !
I love it!! I have an 05 ss and these cars are so much fun. Worth the buy but now prices are going to start going up 🤣
6:50 was music to my ears
There was also a Malibu ss which came in a wagon or sedan. 3.9l v6 not a ton of power but they were cool little cars.
Really cool seeing you in my home town. How’d you like Grand Rapids ?
Finally my favorite platform gets some exposure.
I missed out on a 09 with 130k miles for $5k, that car was a beast for the price and size.
I miss my colbalt ss supercharge... it was a 12 second quarter car hitting best time on track at 10.9. Its a beast mine was a mustang gt slayer.
Finally showing love to cobalt ss
Those headlights are wild 👌🏻
Love Ryan and his car!
For a guy who's first modded car was a 2009 cobalt SS. This is amazing!!! OMG that's the snowbalt!?!?! ZZP really took that thing to another level since the last time I seen it. God damn I love it. ZZP Is the go to for anything cobalt. Had a few parts from them on mine
Wow this is beautiful. The thumbnail made me click asap damn what a build.
This is why My Favourite RUclipsr really love This car
Wow haven't seen this car in forever! What a relic!
You need to find a high hp saab!! The b204 was technically the predecessor of this ecotec. And you could say the ng900 was the cobalt ss of its day! I miss mine :(
The 08+ cobalt SS destroys the srt4 in every category. This was my highschool car and mod for mod it puts bus lengths on a srt4 was very fun back in the day when everything wasn't 700+hp
The name Livery has an interesting and fitting history to the word itself. Yeah, it's actually a word and not just their name. You asked, so it's pronounced the same way you'd say "live" in this sentence: We live in the USA. And the -ery at the end is pronounced like the -ery at the end of artillery.
This is why Livery is such a great name for an American car company, no matter what service they provide: In the old west (American West), English speaking settlers created trade routes between their towns. They needed livery-stables to barn the draft animals that hauled the wagons of supplies and people. In the early days it was mainly oxen and mules, but as time went on, it was mainly horses. In the far American West (Wild Western Territories) old Spanish Mustang Ponies were bred for the job, because of their hardiness in the rough terrain and varying elevations of the western half of the US. So, the livery-stables were often full of American draft ponies. Livery was an old English word that referred to the uniform of a servant, but the town's stables often had the official name of "LIVERY" nailed over the barn door. The company named Livery can be seen as a modern-day livery-stable filled with American Pony-Cars aka Muscle Cars, so I think it's a fitting name to say the least.
Basically how I did the cobalt in need for speed most wanted
Yes! were so close come on Blue! Grand Prix next!
Literally my NFS most wanted end game build.
For anyone that doesnt know about that Ecotec, it has the record for 1/4 mile 4 bangers. I think its 5.83 seconds. Theres a lot of people building the crap out of these things for 1500+ hp. Its insane what theyre doing to these things
ZZP can make that and the 3.8L 3800 monsters!!!!
I wish they sold this and the SRT-4 in the UK. It'd have been a hit.
It’s livery, not livery. Glad I could clear that up for you.
As a Saturn guy the Saturn ion redline was my shit
