Sad you didn’t watch the live performance it adds so much to the experience plus they sound great live.

You asked near the beginning of the song.. "What is that sound." If you watch the live version of this... AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU DO..... You can see Richard Barbieri, the keyboard player producing all of these atmospheric sounds.... and the click has to be a sample because he switches it in and out as needed... The stunning thing about Porcupine Tree is that the live versions of ALL the songs they do sound like the studio versions, the aural quality of their stage show is that good. They are sometimes arranged differently because of the live requirements but its brilliant to ba able to see a band actually DO what is on the record...!!! As for you not appreciating the first half of the record on a first listen, I get that but I wonder if, on a second listen, you will appreciate it for what it is knowing what is to come.? Porcupine Tree remind me of Pink Floyd, but only in the sense that Steven Wilson gives his songs room to breathe and although there are changes coming, they aren't going to be rushed. Keep on Rocking young sir.

Yeah, I can see how on a first listen, especially if you don't listen to a lot of music in general that has those slower builds, you may be sitting there waiting for the change up and it can feel like it's dragging on. I think the payoff warrants it though, and you understand this is just one of those songs you throw on for a cool night drive, or just a really dense smoke sesh and vibe ;D
A little bummed you didn't do the live version, but I understand there's reasons beyond possibly with blockages and stuff that make them a bit less attractive to attempt..but if you ever feel the desire to hear the song again, most certainly give it a shot in your own time!

Let’s all agree, this song has always needed a radio-edit version 😮

While PT occasionally dips their toes into metal, most of their huge catalog is more likely to lull you into a prog trance than melt your face. To really love them (which I do), you need to be into both of those (which I am). I'll second the suggestions of Cheating the Polygraph and Anesthetize, and add The Start of Something Beautiful and Hatesong to that.

It was weird at the time, because Richard Barbieri was in the band ..coming from new wave band Japan...and there they were, playing your local 😮😂

Saw these at some VERY small places, in England, in the early 90s 😂

Please react to PT’s: Way Out of Here. As always, Live at Tilburg is the best version 🖤

The vocal harmonies in the first half bring to mind early 70s bands like Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Like I said: most will ask you to react to Arriving Somewhere...but that's just an 'okay' song...You just have to absolutely listen to Cheating the Polygraph live at Tilburg. That's a song that represents Porcupine Tree at its best it's also better than Anesthetize, which is another song that many will want you to listen to. (Which would also be a better choice than Arriving Somewhere)

I didn't enjoy the first half as much as the second, but I wouldn't say I "don't get" their music. I enjoyed the other songs I have listened to so far 😊
