How to install REAPER + Extensions on Apple M1 Mac | MacOS 11 Big Sur

- How to install the apple silicon / ARM64 version of REAPER, SWS Extension, ReaPack Extension, and VLC.
The main trouble you run into with this is the Mac security and privacy settings blocking you at every step.

This video was edited in REAPER on an 2020 M1 Mac Mini and using an iPad Air as an external monitor (sidecar function).

By the way, I bought the new m1 just for the fast video decoding in reaper, and so far only the avfoundation codec allows me to do that. I tested playback by adding heavy 4k 60fps video, as a result avfoundation - CPU load is minimal, works great, vlc - CPU is almost fully utilized and hard to work with sounding video.

For those having issues installing SWS on Mac M1, please use the X64 version. I just did and it worked fine.

Silly question, if I've got everything backed up with Time Machine will I need to follow some of these steps when moving to a new mac? Reaper seems particular so I figure I'd ask. Great vid!

Great vid. I just moved to mac air after my 2009 macbook died. Having a nightmare with getting old plugins to work such as the VladG Molot Compressor and looks like I'll have to remix a lot of stuff. You win some, you loose some haha

I was here to do the SWS bit, was fast forwarding to get to it, jumped the gun setting it up a bit, had to come back here to rewind, got the task done in 3 minutes. Mac novice.

About the extension. What if I hit ok on the security message long ago and didn't go check at the system preference right away like you said? I tried delete ReaPack and SWS out of userplugin folder and reinstall it again but there's no more warning message... Thank you.

I've done a bit on Kontakt over the years. All the Komplete Kontrol stuff works as far as I know, but I haven't used it with the controller
This was a blessing. First time trying out Reaper. Complex 14 tracks album project pushed my Ableton Live 11 sessions to a halt, CPU-wise. I need another way out for finishing productions that require heavy processing from Acoustica Audio and oversampled Lindell and Plugin Alliance plugins. Let's see how this goes... 😅

SWS will only open with something called Terminal. It's not showing up in the Reaper dock. Help?

Also, had an issue when doing a long render (for podcast)... clicking into another screen showed that the render stopped mid-way through. The actual file was OK, but the render screen looked it it stopped right at the point I click out. Really off putting. Don't remember if that was Beta ARM or Rosetta 2. I gave up and returned my M1, but will use this one day when I decide to try again.

Today I tried installing IK multimedia and iZotope plugins. VST and VST3 plugins are no go, but I think AU format is working ok. I would prefer to use VST3 though so I can easily switch systems.
edit - No UI for AU version of RX plugins.

I USE 15-25 AUDIO AND MIDI INSTRUMENTS (TOGETHER) in reaper, cubase or Logic pro x !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you are talking briefly about the intel and arm builds. I use a lot of third party plugins some of them m1 supported and some not. For stability and efficiency is it better to use the arm builds of reaper, sws, reapack or the intel ones?
still waiting for a lot of companies to release ARM builds of their plugins. I use Intel build for my main system because I have a lot of existing projects with plugins.

Thanks for covering reaper and electronic music production. I'm interested in using it but when I try to do so on my pc (surface pro) it makes an ear splitting high pitched noise. Do you have any ideas about what to do about this?
sounds like mic feedback. is this happening when you arm the track for recording?
@@TheREAPERBlog I think I did, and I also remember hearing my own voice from the speakers even though I never use the computer mic for making music.

I think so, or some mix of both. Both have strengths and weaknesses, different bugs, etc. Some things are way easier on windows, different things are way easier on mac.

Great video. Anyone know how to open an old Reaper session on an M1 Mac? The session is from the latest 64 bit non-M1 version of Reaper.
The session should open fine but you might have missing plugins. The "Catalina" build of REAPER will be most compatible with plugins
@@TheREAPERBlog figured it out. You have to be working on the Catalina/10.15+ version on your original Mac, then render out your project (external HD or icloud),then open the files on Catalina on M1.( I was originally working on 64 bit version.)

@@TheREAPERBlog thanks, got it, but now I can't find the reaper resource folder. any videos you recommend from someone coming from a PC? the learning curve is way harsher than I was anticipating. It's pretty frustrating when I got YT videos "due" and I can't even get one program functioning on my laptop.

Reaper was completely fine with my m1 Mac but after they released the universal version for m1 everything changed .example like -(Native Kontakt not working properly) also constantly freezes up for tasks like doubling up intel or vst3 tracks and so on.
see if going back a few versions improves things
on my m1, I don't receive any security advice and no Extensions menu appear. The files are in the correct position..
Hello, thanks very much for the tutorial. But when I put the extensions in the userplugins folder, Reapor does not load them, so no extensions menu is visible. Also I do not get the authorization message. Is there something I missed? I am on a MacBook M1. Thanks! Erik
Sounds like it might be the wrong extension version for your reaper version.
I had this problem, and it was because I didn't have the arm version of reaper on Mac, which is a separate little button under the normal Mac ones labelled 'beta'

Weird problem: I have a new M1 chip MacBook Air. I installed reaper_sws-arm64.dylib in my UserPlugins folder, started up Reaper, and... no complaint about security, no notice in the General tab of the Privacy & Security pref pane, and no listing of "SWS" actions in the action list. I restarted and still don't get the security trigger. Do you have any idea what's not/happening?
Update: I double-clicked the .dylib to open it manually and got the security warning, pushed "Open Anyway" in the Security pref pane and... still nothing! It's like Reaper just isn't seeing it. So, this is now a different problem - any idea about this one?
double click to open the .dylib isn't going to do anything useful. Seems more like wrong version of reaper or extension. Try right-click open on reaper, then choose open.
Hello, I'm a PC user seriously thinking of transitioning to Mac which I've zero experience. All my projects are obviously in PC format. If I switched over to Mac, would I have a seamless transition from Reaper to Reaper?
reaper is almost exactly the same on both platforms. Most of your settings can be transferred over.

So somehow VST3 Plugins don't even appear in the VST-FX Browser. Is there someone else who has the same problems?
most VST3 are not compatible yet with ARM build. I have working VST3 from Tokyo Dawn Labs and ValhallaDSP. That's about it!

Is it still good to download your version?
I would go with Universal build now, a lot more plugins are compatible these days

If the app is hung you can option-rtclick on the dock icon. Or open activity monitor

@The REAPER Blog they were about the 3rd download(VL) being corrupted. I owe you an apology. It may have been taken down by you tube because I put the name and it highlighted the name. Either way. A Trojan horse warning popped up and was presented with a phone number to call. Long story short it was a scam site. It may not be the one you recommend but they are posing as them. Thought you should know just to protect your reputation on here from What I see is a good one and also to prevent it from happening to anyone else. Just check it out and up date us. Again, I apologize for the accusation. I was in a panic✌️

Hi John, please help me with SWS installation for Mac mini M2 pro, I installed Reaper Universal for Intel and ARM64 dmg, but when put SWS and repack extensions in User plugins folder. Reaper keep asking to install SWS extension when opening it. Please help me to sort this issue
