I would just add to pronate your arm when reaching back, to show the underside of the disc. This will help you get and keep a solid box. When doing this, if you just throw it into the ground in front of you then you’re doing a good job and throwing nose down. You’re gonna have to learn to throw upwards as well. This advice plus the one above will definitely get you 100’+
I appreciate that you stand by the business you're a part of and actively promoting. Shows integrity. Rather have that than some random sponsorship from irrelevant shit
Great video. I’m an older guy that throws 350. I have learned that not only is the disc speed important but the disc weight is probably more important to me. I have a Bolt that’s 152gms and it’s my longest disc. I have a Bolt that’s 173gms and I can’t throw it 250. It’s a fast disc but has a lot of glide and with the light weight it works. There’s a ton of factors. I’m most consistent with a Wraith at 158gms. Almost as far as the Bolt but very controllable for me and it has less fade than the Bolt. Cheers.
Great vid. I've found that I throw further with higher speed discs as long as they are understable enough for me to get full flight with my arm speed. The fastest disc I should be throwing is a wraith but I have a crazy understable nuke that I can push about 20 feet further to about 415. As you pointed out though those higher speed understable shots are way less reliable.
How far you throw any disc depends on numerous factors; Your ability to transfer whatever power you have to the disc (There are many sub issues just in this statement - like grip strength, your throwing form, etc.) Plastic of the disc (flight numbers vary greatly with this) Weight of the disc in combination the plastic. How well you understand your discs. If you are a beginner, I would not recommend buying more than 3 - 5 discs. Learn how those discs fly, then move on from there. Do not then add 10 more discs to your bag, try 1 or 2 more. Trying to learn a whole new bag all at once is for the pros who already have a lot experience with many discs. When I started in 1981, we had maybe a handful of discs that were any good for golf. We were forced to learn slowly because of lack of choices. Today is much more complicated, you have to force yourself to pick just a few discs.
I feel like a flippy 9 speed vs an overstable 13 isnt really the fairest of comparisons. The 13 speed you use should have a similar turn and fade. For example, I have almost exact stats as your lefty shot and my flippy 11 speed wave goes 320 on a golf line, my flippy 9 speed sidewinder goes about 270 on a golf line.
Out of anything in Discraft's line up the Scorch is like a distance cheat code. There's plenty of others that compare but the Scorch is just the easiest to throw consistently.
I hurt my right shoulder a while ago and taught myself to throw lefty. I can now throw drivers farther lefty than righty, howerver I'm having problems with putters and mids left handed. Any tips to learn that spin/flick with your off hand to get putters to fly without wobbling over?
You got the nukes reliably out there on fairly straight lines first try, they'd also deal with wind well. You took tons of tries to get the other discs to their potential because they're so touchy. On the course in a round you get ONE try. I'd take 307 every time over 327 every 6th throw. Also if it was anything but a tailwind the flippy stuff becomes even more unreliable. If I was betting on you and got to have a say, I'd tell you to throw the nuke. Obviously people should still practice with slower discs and work on their form, etc. but if you throw them correctly the big boy drivers for people under 400 feet can still be very viable options for dependable shots. I can force over a halo destroyer to around 430', which is about the same distance I get from a good beat up star wraith, but the wraith is very tricky to get right and doesn't work in most wind. The destroyer is far more predictable and on the course I'd opt for the flex shot with it pretty much every time. Does it mean I "have the arm" for a halo destroyer? No. But does that fact matter? I don't think it does.
Yeah but these force over shots probably don't build good habits as a beginner. That's how I started playing and I only got better when I started throwing discs more in line with my arm speed on hyzerflip, also requires less effort throwing that way in my opinion
Hey Uli! I think might even get a little farther with those 8-9 speed discs with hyzer flips. Regardless, your offhand throwing form shows a lot of dedication, and promise. Congrats on becoming a father recently, and I hope you fully heal up soon! 🙂
I always thought speed was a combination of spin and release speed. So for example, a 12 speed disc can effectively be throw with a slower arm speed if you compensate with a faster spin (snap of the wrist). But I am still learning.
The airfoil shape of a disc has an optimal speed to generate lift. If you are under speeding a disc it won't generate enough lift to get full effect and will not get the most predictable shot shape either. Throw your fastest discs and pick the slowest speed disc you are getting near your max range. That'll give you the most control.
Only this is doesn’t the slight up hill you mentioned at the beginning going to affect your throw? I know for most up hill shots it’s better to go with a less stable disc to get a better accurate shot. I’d be interested in you doing this on a downhill shot I believe you would get more control and distance out of the nukes versus the mantis?
I throw a 9 speed about 300+ on a good day. I've tried throwing a 12 speed (Destroyer) on an Anny line and that sometimes works, especially if I get a good skip. I'm guessing that my arm speed is about 48mph but I'm over twice Uli's age. My favorite disc is rated something like 9.5 • 5 • -2 • 1 and it's gotten more flippy over the seven years I've been throwing it. The first disc that had similar numbers that I got used to and could repeat that distance from was a Starlite Valkyrie @ 158g. I now throw a light Axiom Insanity.
I think if you throw each disc with the same nose down angle the faster disc (assuming it gets full/same flight as the other discs) should go further. Spinrate too ofcourse, some people struggle with gripping wide rims, me included.
I will say that spin is a humongous factor as to whether or not distance drivers go further than fairways or mids. I have terrible spin, so most of my discs pewter out around the same time after they leave my hand.
On most rounds when I am not throwing well, I only throw up to a 9 speed (might throw an understable 11 to see what is going on). Those days the 7 and 9 speeds are generally around 310-315 with mids around 280. When I am "on" for some random reason 11/12 speeds can do 385 or so and the 9's are 330-ish. Always find the gapping and "compressing" of distances to be interesting to me seeing as I throw a glitch or Berg (forehand) on a couple 250-290 foot holes (downhill a little bit). Never been able to figure out how to get the same "pop" consistently through the bag. I need a local guy who is a good teacher as, much like ball golf, I need to feel the positions and have someone physically correct it.
I'm a lefty and I was afraid that Paul is gonna be throwhing further than me even with his left arm but luckily that didn't happen🤣 heat is definitely my go to when I need distance. Can get it to 380 with a nice hyzer flip
You should throw those same discs as Righty for comparison. The trend should reverse if your premise is true. If it doesn't, then there could be something else in play.
I need to go try this - I think I throw Shrykes the farthest (380/390) - I don’t think I can touch that distance with a sidewinder - similar to a heat I would think. Maybe I’m wrong - a good excuse to get out to the field to check.
I would like to have seen a less stable disc used for the 13 speed. Something more comparable to the other 2 discs. Wider rims should go farther no matter the arm speed, as long as they aren’t dumping out of the air. It’s pretty simple physics.
Seems like lower speed discs also hold angles longer and are slower to hyzer out compared to higher speed discs of similar stability. Players I've played with who have lower arm speeds (who throw maybe 250-300, the subject of this video) have an easier time getting distance with a Pearl or Mana than a Tern or a Sidewinder because they don't dump out as fast, and more of the discs flight is spent nearly parallel with the ground, helping lift carry the disc further forward. Doesn't feel like just "simple physics."
You are in the range where it doesn’t quite matter; throw for stability and flight. I throw wraiths, bosses and destroyers for different uses. 62 mph 1250-1400 spin.
Hmm, opposite for me, I think I can throw my faster fairways around 340ft and maybe distance drivers around 360ft. They are not going that much farther for me, and I don't throw them too often anymore
As an older player with moderate arm speed I still find that I can throw a neutral high-speed driver (in my case the DD Captain: 13, 5, -2, 2) farther than any of my lower speed drivers primarily because I can trust it at max speed/effort. I can crank on a Captain and get full flight nearly every time. I find lower speed drivers are touchier, and are much more susceptible to variations in angle and speed. I consistently throw my Captain 320-350 and have maxed it to almost 400. Can I get an Escape or Vandal or Saint to those distances? Sometimes, but I am far more likely to get worse misses when throwing those discs at that speed.
@@DriftWizard750 I think my discs are 173-175 except for putters and mids. I used to throw lots of 158-166 discs when starting but eventually found more consistency with heavier discs. I think this and my inconsistency on angle and speed indicate that I am not a very skilled thrower LOL!
@PaulUlibarri you really think you could win a tournament in ma1 throwing 300ft max lefty only? That's really hard to believe. Go film a round out at hornets nest playing lefty only and shoot ma1 scores out there. That would be entertaining 🤣
It's not so much that the Nuke is faster. It's so my much more *overstable* than the Heat or Mantis. A true comparison would be against a Nuke SS or Crank SS. You probably can't throw a Raptor any farther either and it's not faster.
When I do field work I normally use a BRAVE and a SAINT PRO -7 & 8 speeds. I can’t believe how far I can get them with accuracy. I honestly think with my smaller hands they feel better in the hand. A 13 speed is too awkward to get the snap.
Though I fully get the awkwardness of the bigger rim sizes with small hands, I find focusing pressure on my middle finger and subsequently smaller fingers really helpful for discs such as shrykes and ballistas and such.
