    No amount of money today could rival the joy I got out of opening and playing with my Star Wars toys back in the 70s-80s.

    • @jackbedient
      @jackbedient 2 года назад +3

      Same here. Born in 71 and was perfectly primed for these toys. Can’t stand the franchise now and it’s brainless creators and fans. I had the Vader with extendable saber, the Med Droid, and Boba Fett with the projectile missile.

    • @MrX-nr1
      @MrX-nr1 Год назад

      @@jackbedient those which you had weren't probably the valuable ones.
      the med droid (fx-7) is nothing special itself. i've got a couple of them. it was only that one special palitoy version mint on card which sold for so much money.
      all vaders had extendable sabers. the really rare and valuable ones have double extendable sabres (you could extend them twice and they were really long).
      and for the boba, you couldn't have had one with a removable projectile because they were never sold on the market.
      you must have had one with a fixed projectile for sure.
      maybe your memories trick you on this one.

      When I was a kid I saw a wire basket on a shelf in a Kmart full of figures kids tore out of the packages. Me and another kid were looking at them and he said, "Take one!" before I could say anything he grabbed a handful, shoved one in my hand and we both bolted out of there. I didn't look at it until I was safely in our car. It was a jawa and I thought, "What the Hell is this thing??" My first intro to Star Wars action figures.

      not quite true. I begged my dad to by the action figures and leave them mint on card in storage when I was a teen. I didn't have the money to do it, and neither did my dad, who was unemployed at the time. He agreed with me though. Years later we kicked ourselves of course. I regret opening my vinyl caped jawa, my boba fett on Star Wars (not TESB card). Oh well!

    Wait a second. An ultra-limited edition Obi-Wan figure that originally retailed for $2000 can now sell for AS MUCH AS $2000 on the secondary market? If it's not selling for more that it retailed for originally, why bother mentioning it? Also, pulling list prices from eBay is an absurd way to gauge real value. Just because something is listed at a high price, doesn't mean anyone was crazy enough to actually pay it.

    At the age of 40, I still have all of my 1st gen Star Wars action figs. Those figs have seen a lot of love, and are nowhere near mint condition. Some weapons are gone, paint jobs are flaked etc. But I HAVE them, in my curio cabinet, and that's what counts.
    I was always late in starting my collections of franchise toys. Man, I still remember that fateful day when I after what seemed like a lifetime of saving, came to the toy store with my dad to get my next little guy.... and found Star Wars wall cleared out and replaced with action figures from some other franchise, G.I. Joe I think it was. Almost the same size and style.
    I was devastated. My dad asked the staff about it, and the answer was that they were discontinued. After all, it was nearly 3 years since Jedi went down at the theaters. Dad asked if I didn't want one of the new action figures, but I had no idea what they were about so I ran out of the store with my unspent money.
    Man... being a kid in the developed world of the mid 80s was tuff... LOL.

      It wasn't just the extended tip lightsaber. What they are talking about is one where the extended tip was actually a different piece, and that was hidden inside the thicker part of the lightsaber. Besides just shoving it forward, you then had to grab the very tip and pull the rest (the skinny part) out.

    My brother and I collected the 1st Edition Star Wars toys when they first came out back in the 70s, played with them until the arms fell off, lost half of them in the backyard, dog chewed others up, all of them lost many years ago. I had this 6" Boba Fett I got from the toy store, must have been for $5 if I remember, about ten years ago I was browsing thru a collectibles store and came across that exact same figure priced for several hundred dollars. If we had known then what we knew now... we'd still have played with the toys until the arms fell off, but we would've bought a second action figure and kept it stored in the boxes waiting for out retirement!

    To all of you who had the Darth Vader figure. When the narrator here says "telescoping lightsaber, it doesn't just mean a light saber that pulls out of the arm, but also the skinny tip pulls out from the thicker part of the saber blade. THAT is the rare one.

      There are 2 lightsaber types. The original one was double telescoping, It was 2 pieces of plastic, and the thinner piece could be move independently within the larger piece.
      The far more common version is the single telescoping. The thinner piece is glued/ molded together with the larger piece. This is the version you are alluding to- with the thin "tip" of plastic about 1cm long.

    Just remember people the listing price on eBay doesn't dictate a items value, its just something set by the buyer. For correct information always refer to the actual sold price of comparable items (if they exist). Condition, packaging, rarity, how complete a item is, demand (can be seasonal) / popularity all is a factor for gauging a price.

    my parents gave away all my starwars toys to my younger cousins one day while I was at school. These were toys I bought and paid for by doing work around the neighborhood. Those toys were destroyed by my low class cousins in a matter of days. From then on I kept my small collection of valuable items like coins and arrowheads hidden in various places where they could not find them. Such a shame because if I had those toys to sell as an adult, mother might have gone to a much nicer retirement facility.

      Tony Stark
      Nope!
      That's the real unfortunate thing about ebay. Nothing is rare anymore. Because you can get anyTHING from anyWHERE in the world now. When I started collecting Star Wars toys I had to got to garage sales, swap meets, comic book stores, toy shows & conventions looking for stuff. If you couldn't find a particular item within a 100 mile radius of your home, it was considered "Rare". Values of all this stuff was skyrocketing in 1998. Then, ebay got popular. Now all the Star Wars stuff I bought, in the 90's, that was released in the 90's
      Is still not worth what I paid for it, in a retail store, 20 years ago! Because everyone is keeping their stuff in mint condition. There is too much out there!
      Also this video fails to point out that the "high value" toys they are showing are in acrylic cases & graded by the A.F.A. which increases the price by $100 to $1,000 just for that.

  • @robguitarwizard

    Man! I had most of those figures as a kid in the 80s. Opened and played with.
    I had all the Star Wars, and Empire set with multiples of storm troopers etc. I had the vinyl cape jawa, and was disappointed that it wasnt the proper cloth one.
    I had well over 100 figures, playsets, spaceships and vehicles.
    I sold the lot for $500 in the mid 1990s.
    Wish Id kept them.
    But I have a lot of happy memories.

    Unfortunately, I had 12 of the Boba Fett toys with the shooting missiles. But it's too late for me. What's too late? I also had 12 children, all dead! They all choked on the missiles. I've been in denial for far too long. Ever since I joined The Shooting Boba Fett Toy Killed My Children Group (or T.S.B.F.T.K.M.C.G., for short), they've helped me realize that Star Wars is not as important as my family. I miss you little Suzie and sweet Jake (who was born without a tongue). I know you all are somewhere with the force now. Up there, with Master Yoda.
    Please support our foundation. It helps people like me to cope with the REAL dangers that Sith toys and fake bounty hunters have on our children. BLESS YOU ALL!

    I'm just going to correct you here - the "two piece" telescoping light sabre on that Darth Vader was NOT for appearances, it was for safety. The part had to be a certain length to "assure" the safety ninnies that kids would not choke on it... and at the same time the thin, flexible tip was designed so nobody would go blind when they poke their friends in eye with it. Pretty much every kid would break that stupid tip off the light sabre because it was so lame looking.
    I have a couple of these... which I hang on purely for nostalgia. Here's the reality: in "played with" condition, these toys are ubiquitous and barely worth a couple bucks.

    I have a definite memory of passing a store in the UK in Blackpool in the late 70's. it was probably 1978 and i was a kid. In the shop window I swear was a Jawa in vinyl cape. As my parents had taken me to visit the Dr Who exhibition in Blackpool they decided i'd been "treated enough" that day and didn't buy it for me.
    I'm convinced it's a real memory as I already had a cloth caped Jawa and this one was certainly different.
    Fortunately i pick the wrong lottery numbers ever week now too. So i came to terms with that day long ago. But occasionally i get reminded. Jawa vinyl cape. Damn.

      @Seventiesfan 7 лет назад +4

      I have a Jawa story somewhat similar to yours. In 1978 I was in a Lionel Playworld toy store (long out of business) and had two Jawas in my hands, the common cloth outfit Jawa and the valuable vinyl caped Jawa. I put the vinyl caped Jawa back on the shelf and went home with the common Jawa that I still have. Years later I bought a toy collecting magazine that said how valuable the vinyl caped Jawa is. I'm not upset about it now because I'm not in this for the money. I collect old toys because I love them. Who knows? Maybe someday the big head Han Solo figure will be worth a fortune.

    I had that Darth Vader but, like all the Star Wars toys with vinyl cloaks, the cloak would split around the arm-hole in less than a day. This would render it almost worthless. I had three of the medical droids as a kid. I’m kicking myself that I ever took them out of the box

      +MarkNUK a collectible is only worth what someone will pay for it so the market totally dictates what you can get for items

    • @WildChildFromHell
      @WildChildFromHell 8 лет назад +3

      Yeah, but the point here is that those haven't sold at those prices, so the market hasn't dictated anything. I can list my used underwear on eBay for £1,000,000, but it isn't actually worth that much until someone is willing to pay that.
