Thank you Randy for your videos. I have 8 omnibot 5402's and One 5405 I'm currently fixing up. Not to mention all the robots I still have to do your a big inspiration to get them done 😉
If I'm ever stuck in a post-apocalypse, crossing the plains kind of situation, I want Randy Rain in my wagon train. Her aptitude to tear into and fix things is S-Tier. Plus magic tricks.
Wow! I feel lucky to find this video!! I found a Buck at a garage sale and got it for 10$! I found a wire to make it work at a thrift store for 25 cents and now that I got it working, it has this same problem. The ears are not moving and it doesn't turn its head left or right. I'm going to try to open it up later but it's good to have a video like this that would help guide me through it.
Mother of God!!! I'm one to love a challenge and complicated machines, but holy shit!!! What a pain in the ass this one is!! Been there done that. I'll fix a million fish ones before I ever open another one of these again!! Hats off to you Randi for sticking through this complicated beast!! The end results is awesome though. Buck is one of my favorite of the Gemmy collection, but not to repair LOL.
What an amazing repair, you can hardly tell it was even opened! I do feel your pain as I’ve worked on a few of these. The first repair I did was the side to side movement. That did take awhile, but was successful. The second one was in much worse condition. Everything was broken except the up and down movement. When I opened it up, I had to use a putty knife to scrape the skin off the plastic. I took parts from the up and down movement to fix the side to side, which that was fine with me. Unfortunately the ear movement seemed to have fried on the circuit, but I did get the mouth working. I sculpted a piece of wood to replace the mouthpiece because the original one was completely shattered. Now my first one I mentioned still has some issues, the side to side is getting very loud and the mouth needs a new gear. I definitely like some of the methods you’ve used here, so I may take them I’m consideration if I decide to give it another go. Here is a short clip of my repair: ruclips.net/video/lqFfmzun5rQ/видео.html
This is awesome!! Was just looking for one online, my grandpa had one in his car shop. I'm always so nervous to fix mechanical stuff like this, I'm so envious of your talent!!! Hope one day I can get just as handy as you.
Gemmy Industries also made a lot of Lifesizes too over their nearly 40 years. It's great that you can fix stuff like this because I'd have no idea what to do.
Very lucky to find one with the latex still in such great condition. I had one I bought new when they came out and reluctantly got rid of it when the latex just crumbled years later. I wish I hadn't now, of course, those are going for crazy money now so I am probably not going to end up with another one. Awesome work as always. Edit: Oh, it looks like there may have been two versions. I didn't remember it coming with a remote or microphone when I had mine. Maybe they used something other than latex on the later model. That skin does definitely look thicker than mine did. Mine was almost paper thin latex.
Interesting. There may sure have been. There are different versions of the fish. I pretty sure it was silicone. I could always be wrong, but I've used enough silicone to be pretty sure.
@@RandiRain I am sure they got several complaints of the latex rotting within a year or two and changed it. There is also a possibility that other companies tried to copy it and mine was not a Gemmy. It looked identical to this and the same size, but it only had a motion sensor and a button. No remote or mic. I am pretty sure of that.
@@RandiRain Now I have got to figure this out. I am sure I bought mine in the 90s, but internet says it came out in 2005. None of the ones I am finding on ebay have rotting skin and none of them have motion sensors on the front. So, what the heck DID I have?
@@scottmcdonnell7559 you might have had Buddy Buck. That one was a smaller head that Gemmy made in 2000 (before the one in this video was even made) and that one has the latex that dry rots easily. I don’t have Buddy in my collection, but I’m hoping to eventually acquire one.
Ebay... search something like "nylon plastic toy gears". There are several places that sell packages of random ones, or you can buy the exact ones you need.
@@lisaloprestodehart1606 I don't want to touch another one of those ever again. Not going to lie. That's a tough one. Not that it's so complicated. It's that there is just so much you have to do.
You have my sympathy, that looked like a tough one. :) I've never understood one-way manufacturing but more and more things are like that now Ie. few good ways to take it apart again. Neat product though, not a lot of retail animatronics out there. See there is a good argument for brass gears strategically put in certain key spots of high torque like those small cracked ones you replaced, it's quite the elaborate machine to take apart for something so small. Sure you could call it a novelty item but not a cheap example heh.
Fantastic video, very intriguing to see what makes Buck work! possibly equally as tedious as this refurb: have you ever had a go at any of the early Hasbro FurReal Friends toys?
The neck of the deer without the skin reminds me of the video game "Horizon Zero Dawn", where they have all those robotic animals. Very cool construction.
Hey Randi! I’m having issues trying to get the skin back on… do you think you could explain to me a semi easy way to get it back on? Thanks EDIT: I know you need to remove the ears to put the skin on but you know the clip things? Wouldn’t those move when I put the skin on?
I've only done the one, and it's been a while. The ears you had to unscrew to get off, but you screw the bottom part back on and the ears snap into place. Use baby power or something to help get the skin on.
Sorry. If I fixed everything people asked me, I would be booked up for the next 20 years. I don't have the time to do it. There are hobbyist groups on facebook of toy collectors that you might could find someone, but that's about it.
