The game made it across the pond to Britain, and I remember a school friend having one, but as far as I can remember it escaped having a satanic panic about it (although we had plenty of satanic panics about other things, e.g. a series called Robin of Sherwood which was thought to have too many witches and warlocks in it).

@@RandiRainI was surprised by the plugs too. I repair arcade games and lots of other stuff, so I immediately recognized that AMP IDC plug.
I’ve always been a tinkerer and did the same as you, taking my toys apart to try fixing them or just to see how they worked.. then forgot where parts and screws went. We didn’t have cellphone cameras back then, so I learned to make drawings and even insert the screws through the drawing (usually on paper or cardboard) and place the parts on top to remind me where everything goes. I’m about the same age as you. I remember the game but never played it. The commercial was intriguing but didn’t explain how to play it.

oh wow! I have this game, I got it in the early 90s at a garage sell for 2 bux complete. But the tower never worked, so I've never actually played it. Now that I've seen how you take it apart and what the inner workings are I think maybe I'll try repairing it. I do know that the batteries were left in it when I first got it and leaked. So since I've been a long time follower of yours I know how to fix that kind of damage. Thanks for the great videos!

Me and my mom caught the Dungeons & Dragons satanic panic in 1983. She was devout Catholic, but quite eccentric, so news reports about shocked parents had us running to Kmart to grab the game. Children's toys and games eventually get thrown out, sold, or given away as we get older, and for the most part we don't think about them anymore. But Dark Tower is one that I regret selling, even though it's been over 20 years since I sold it. I did buy the Return to Dark Tower game, but the fact that you have to use an app on your smart phone to control the tower, instead of just pushing buttons on the tower itself, cheapens the experience. I mean if all I wanted was to play on my cell phone I'd go sit on the toilet for a half hour or something.

It's basically EvilSpeak, the classic 80s horror film...
But instead of making you fly, giving you dominion over your peers, gives you insights and powers beyond imagination, this is likely to sit on a shelf as a cool looking ornament, until it ends up in a yard sale minus the actual board and game pieces! I do love that they used the same exact font used on MOTU figure packs for the character display pictures. In fact I'm surprised this wasn't repurposed as a MOTU item or game when that became popular. I could definitely see this reused as something to do with the Sorceress, maybe moulded in white, or an extension piece to Castle Grayskull or Snake Mountain, moulded in colour to match those.

I'm about your age, and I had wanted that game badly. Now, looking at the game pieces really triggers my memory as if I had seen them first hand previously, but I do not recall playing it anywhere or any of my friends owning one. Maybe I got one and something happened to it right away, so I never experienced it much . . . although I feel as though I owned one, it doesn't sit well with me. I guess just old age, crossed circuitry, the incomprehensible ways of memory, and perhaps just a little dab of Satanism thrown in. However, I never recalled Dark Tower being tied to Satanism. Various metal music, yes. Dungeons & Dragons, yes, but not Dark Tower. If you were my classmate during that time, and I knew you had the game, and nobody played it with you, I definitely would be over at some point to play that game, so I hope you inform us in the video (only 58 seconds into your video when I began to write this comment) how the game was. Likely, not as good playing alone as with other people, but still hope you state whether or not you could imagine the game to be quite enjoyable with other people, and during that time period.
Regardless, I remember what one of Jerry King's show with my mother, ahem . . . I meant to say Geraldo Rivera's shows on Satanism during that whole Satanic Panic Manic Mania, and it was such a ridiculous farce. He had so called experts on to talk about the dangers of Satanism, and how to tell if your children might be getting drawn in by the temptation of the dark side! Of course, like is often the case, the experts had no qualifications stated as to what made them experts. One guest, if I recall correctly, had written a book on the subject, but that hardly makes anyone an expert. They did list some tips or signs to look out for that might indicate your child is involved in Satanism. You know, typical teenage behavior, you know, developing a somewhat rebellious nature, wanting to distance themselves from their parents, making new friends, you know, typical behavior for teenagers who are trying to discover who they are. Some of the other things they mentioned were skulls, which could be replicas of skulls, or jewelry with skulls, skull candles, or any images of skulls on t-shirts, or album covers, posters, whatever. Images of the Grim Reaper was another one, along with images of cemeteries, hearses, just anything that was over the top stereotypical nonsense. In fact, my mother turned to me at one point, smiled and said in a jokingly manner, "Hey, I bought most of that stuff for you."
Here's one thing that was so unbelievable that the fact that they were claiming it to be true, pretty much told me they did not know Jack $h1t about Satanism, and that they were likely some government shill trying to induce more fear and panic in the general populace, or maybe, as for the one guest, was basically an opportunistic BS artist, who decided to cash in on the Manic Craze, and defecate some POS book on the subject matter. Anyway, now get this, they claimed the reason why you found so much graffiti under bridges, and in tunnels, was because . . . . do you know why? . . . have any educated guesses? . . . because they were underground, and therefore, it was closer to Satan!!! Man, I think I laughed a day and a half from that one, and it was delivered with such an air of superiority from delivering such authentic knowledge. As if, for it would have absolutely nothing to do with being typical places where kids will hang out for they could be out of sight of others . . . and that is exactly why one would generally find a lot of graffiti in those areas, because you were less likely to be caught there, out of sight, than on some street somewhere or even in some alley! Yet, when the general populace is so easy to program, and especially when it comes to programming such a perspective that is already viewed as being negative, and you wish to make that view even more extreme by painting false pictures of the most wicked evilest things that exist and tie them directly to Satanism, people will eat that $h1t up all day long, and subscribe to that falsehood, and they will be likely to believe almost any negative claim one makes about Satanism. Yes, it is far easier to fool a group of people than it is to convince even one of them that they had been fooled. They still use the same tactics today, only on a much more sophisticated level, and combined with several other tactics of pumping great amounts of fear into the populace, rendering them easier to control, and manipulate!
