    So satisfying as always to watch. Sega Genesis was my favorite system growing up. The CD version was so cool but I wanted to save up for the 32X and Dreamcast during that time. Glad you did a nostalgic gaming console to change it up.

    That plate is specific part used to attach a Model 1 Genesis to a Model 2 Sega CD. The Model 2 Genesis fit without the adapter plate. Older electronics like this are usually (fairly) bulletproof. I'd be surprised if it needs much more than some PCB cleaner and electrical contact cleaner. Any socketed chips probably need to be removed and cleaned.

    The RF modulator (the video plug you used) is very delicate and bad quality in general. There might be some more rust and debris inside. My advice would be to use the AV signal, which is more reliable and higher quality. All things considered, the console seems to work fine, just remember to plug the "mixing cable", which is a requirement to use both the Genesis and Sega CD audio at the same time. To test the disc reader, you can just burn a random game image into a disc, the Sega CD was too basic at the time to have copy protection. If you want to only test the audio functionality you can also use a regular audio CD.

    You would have likely been fine to immerse the top for a short amount of time. That light looks like an LED, and the lens effectively pots the semiconductor element of the LED. If the flood waters didn’t seep inside, your short immersion isn’t either.
    I ultrasonically clean boards with LEDs frequently, and haven’t had any issues with water getting inside them. (I do, of course, make sure the board is dry before powering up.)

    Only problem I remember having with my old Sega Setup (had the whole thing, Genesis, 32x and SegaCD) was the CD portion, the lid didn't like to sit right so the disc would have trouble spinning, had to hang it off the edge and use a clamp to put just the right amount of downward pressure on it.

  • @striderskorpion
    @striderskorpion 29 дней назад

    I'm not sure if there's something wrong with the cartridge or if it's an issue with the Genesis, but the system should boot the cartridge. Cartridges get priority over discs. There's also probably an issue with the video plug. It might be bad solder joints or possibly a bad connection in the plug itself.

    Nice work. If using vinegar, try to neutralize with soda/NaOH solution immediately after taking it out. Then go ahead and rinse/wd40.
    Vinegar treatment doesn't last too long. It also actually strips the protective coating off the rest of the piece as well. The wd40, as a permanent coating, is too volatile to depend on. I'm sure you'll figure how to replace it with something more sustainable. All the best

  • @MikeL-FL
    @MikeL-FL Месяц назад

    Have you ever considered picking up a blast cabinet for the metal parts? Sand blasting them would give a better finish and you wouldn’t be getting high on vinegar fumes. 😵‍💫

    Tech here. You can submerge the circuit board in soapy water and scrub away. Just take the battery off first. As long as there's no power going through it, it won't do any damage. I've saved many a board/component with a good deep clean. It just needs to dry out _really_ well afterward.
