- Couldn't wait any longer for a Firefly 338 so decided to take a chance on this Grote, boy was I surprised.
This is an honest review, it is not a sponsored event, I paid for this guitar with my own money.
Here's a link to a guitar very similar to the one I show in this video:

I recently purchased the Grote "Jazz Guitar" (single P90 pickup, no cutaways, full hollow-body) on Amazon for $179. The fretwork was surprisingly good- no grit or fret sprout. The finger board was very thirsty and readily absorbed 3 coats of mineral oil. The fit and finish are simply impressive and the tone is amazing. This 335 version looks to be every bit as good as mine. Thanks for your review
Jeff Thanks for your comment. I have since gotten some buzzing on the low E around the fifth fret. Agree on the finger board looking thirsty, I think I'll try your mineral oil idea. Did you remove the strings first? What kind of strings do you think it comes with 9s or 10s?
Great video thank you
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for taking time to leave a comment, always welcome.
If it’s made of wood and metal, I appreciate it ! Thanks for the video
your welcome, it's been a fun guitar.
That's a nice guitar, there was a review on u tube on that same guitar and the guy was thrashing on it, he said it was well worth the money, great choice 🎸👍.
working on getting to the thrashing level, try to practice every day. Think I'm getting better.
Great video, have you tried to play it with high gain? Because I love hollow body's but I'm a rock/metal guy so I'm wondering how it sounds. I was thinking about picking one of these. So I'm just curious
Wil Ward, Thanks. Funny you ask, I just got a new practice amp that I plan to test out soon on this guitar, maybe this weekend. Stay tuned, the video should be up shortly in a week or so.
@@MakeItorBreakItNow ooh nice, I'll subscribe and turn on notifications
thanks.
I've been thinking more about this and have an idea to show this car and a new one LP variant that would touch on your point.
Just got this guitar yesterday, tuned it up started playing it and had a hard time putting it down. Fun as hell to play, the only critique I can make is the bouts are pointed instead of the mouse ears like in this video but really impressed at the ease of playing and decent tone. May upgrade the pickups.
william, thanks for the feedback. Like you I find this one hard to put down.
@@MakeItorBreakItNow Hi there. I have been on the prowl for quite some time for an inexpensive yet decent quality ES-335 style guitar as the likelihood of ever being able to drop bank on the big daddy Gibson isn't gonna be in the cards. Anyhoo in the course of this journey, I happened to stumble across this here video of yours, of which I'd like to say that I'm extremely happy and pleased that I did. I found it to be very comprehensive, straightforward, informative, and highly entertaining. I really like your style of presentation alot, so much so that I subbed to your channel. Thanks a million for posting this because as a result it led me decide to pick one of these up myself. In closing I just wanna say that I thoroughly enjoyed your playing, and am looking forward to viewing more of your content.
@@SultanOfTwang1956 Thanks, here's another guitar video (HB SC-450) I made you might be interested in. ruclips.net/video/iZbqzERfsa4/видео.html
@@MakeItorBreakItNow Hello there once again ☺️ Say I was just curious as to whether or not you have done any particular upgrades on your Grote 335 yet and if so what kind?
Bought the cherry 335. GROTE Just changed rusty strings, put graphite in the nut slots and AMAZING. I BOUGHT THE PURPLE ONE FOR 200, THAT WAS PERFECT TOO. In case Firefly or Benton are out of stock, which seems to be the case often. Grote I am very happy with.
Brian, thanks for sharing. I'm very happy with my Grote too. Also recently got a Benton. You can see the review here: ruclips.net/video/iZbqzERfsa4/видео.html let me know what you think of that one.
Just pulled the trigger on one in Red at same price ..$149.00 with free shipping . Couldn't pass up such a good sounding guitar that looks like an old hotrod ,for the low price. Thanks for your review. Mike W.
Michael, hope your's is as good as mine. I'm using it for a 4 mini amp throwdown test right now that I'm planning to post this weekend. Thanks for the comment, Stay tuned for more reviews soon.
WOW ! It just arrived in perfect condition and I"m blown away with the quality of my purchase ! You must have given it a good vibe with your wish for its safe arrival. Thanks VERY much for your posted video review as it was one of the deciding factors ! Thanks again
@@michaelwhalen7991 very happy for you. I'm currently filming a mini/headset amp review with this guitar that I plan to post in a couple of days. Stay tuned.
I wish I had counted how many times you banged it on the table. LOL🤣😂
Bill, going back I noticed what you mean, thanks for the comments.
Ciao man. Are the pickups 2 or 4 wires? I would like to take it and split the coils with a splitcoil
Mastro Jolly Roger, great name BTW. I'm not sure I'm thinking 4, but I'll check and if I'm wrong I'll add a message to this one. I haven't taken the guitar apart yet. Although I'm thinking about it.
Amazing it didn’t get damaged not much protection parking
Robert, yeah, I know. You want to see a crazy damaged guitar video delivery check out my HB video: ruclips.net/video/iZbqzERfsa4/видео.html
I would like to see someone address the string spacing when doing a look over. I bought a Redid and the low E string was on the edge of the fingerboard while the high E string had more than enough clearance on the treble side of the fingerboard. This is very important as you don't want to fret the low E and have it fall off the fingerboard due to lack of clearance. With a set in neck and hardware non-movable, there is no way to fix this.
Good point. I've gotten a 5th fret buzz on the low E, everywhere else is fine. I'm think of filing the fret down a bit or using a thinner string...
This or Grote or delta king?
I had a Grote back when they first became popular Go here to see and hear it: ruclips.net/video/yz6-Urna9fc/видео.html
I am a electric guitar player and my family started camping and I want to play around the campfire but do not want to switch to acoustic do you think it would work for that?
Fortnite Lovers, interesting question. Without an amp its not as loud as an acoustic but still can be heard. You could get a relatively inexpensive but good practice amp like this Nux and you could rock the woods from clean to overdrive. amzn.to/3r0Xx9f
Now that would really be a campfire to remember... You can listen to the Nux on my new guitar review here:

What’s the nut width? Nice review. Please keep it up.
Ainji, thanks for your question. I just measured it, the nut is 43 mm. You might be interested in my most recent guitar review here: ruclips.net/video/iZbqzERfsa4/видео.html
Thank you for the reply! Certainly. I’ll watch your latest guitar review right now.
@@ainji1064 Just got this guitar yesterday, I have smallish hands and was a little worried about the neck myself, love the neck on this, not to wide or thick, the action was good too. Really fun and easy to play, pretty impressed with the guitar.
Very nice I have a similar guitar SX HOLLOWODY left handed I have nine guitars all made left handed my two latest guitars GRETSCH STREAMLINER and a LYX telecaster I bought from Amazon o great 👍 sound I been playing over 48 years singer also alot of gigs from New York to Florida my longest gig was in Florida country club lounge over eight years
Eddie, very impressive, 48 years, I wish I had started playing 48 years ago, probably would have changed my life.
Are the pickups microphonic?
They don't seem to be so far, plan to do more testing this weekend to verify.
@@MakeItorBreakItNow Thank You I appreciate it. :)
What the neck connection like. Looks off and rough where it connects up. Would explain tuning hold on it.
Lord Matty, neck is glued on with a truss rod, did a little more adjusting and it works great now.
Where did you get this from? Link?
Brandon, I got it on Amazon, via the Ebguitar factory. I just checked for a link to the product and couldn't find it, which isn't unusual for Amazon since they role in and out of guitar lines frequently. I have found that if you check back in a week or so, they come back up. If that happens I'll post a link in the comment section of the video.
Brandon, this one is very similar to one I have:
www.amazon.com/product-GROTE-Electric-Guitar-Hollow/dp/B07CRTCXDV
Lol! You're just bangin it all over the place. 🤣🤣🤣
MobileDecay, just trying to break it in my own special way.
This is the kind of common sense review I need.
I'm a beginner, so I want a fair product I can practice on, at a fair price.
It pretty decent, my favorite right now that I'm playing a lot is this one: ruclips.net/video/iZbqzERfsa4/видео.html I paid a little more ~$50 but it was worth it.
What about the "RANGER" brand?
I'm not familiar with that one, can you send me details?
It amazes me they can show up in one piece, firefly must spend a lot of money on returns and refunds, maybe their only 150 bucks, the box only costs them 50cents
TJ Forgey, agreed it does seems a bit short sighted. If you want a real shock though see how this Harley Benton guitar arrived: ruclips.net/video/iZbqzERfsa4/видео.html
The budget guitars are great you don't need a EXSPENSIVE Gibson my gretsch streamliner was only 549 which is low compared to the 3 or 4 thousand dollar guitars
Eddie, totally, agree. Many rock and roll stars still use their starter guitars.
@@MakeItorBreakItNow yes good point your right 👍 like Springsteen he still uses the same guitar he started with Willie Nelson to
Bound F-holes, bound fingerboard, block inlays, all for $159?? What's Epiphone's problem?
Arthur, that's a very good question. Been this Harley Benton also and really like it a lot: ruclips.net/video/iZbqzERfsa4/видео.html
@@MakeItorBreakItNow . .Yeah, they're both made in China after all.
Sweet as 😁
Jake, yes it is. Thanks for the comment.
Pretty guitar. I cringed every time you banged it on the table.
as did I, sometimes it's hard to video, talk, and taken care of your stuff all at the same time...
hi,friend
hi Eart
Don't be scared Rick it like you stole it don't let all the snobs tell you to change everything it's a great guitar at a great price life is good enjoy it to the fullest
Ed, couldn't agree with you more. Thanks for the positive comment.
any chance we can milk a Chuck Berryish sound outta that?
David, sure. It all depends on your play level. I'm dedicating 5-15 minutes a day for about a year now and my skills are definitely improving...
I know how to set up a guitar and fix them also 😂
Thanks Eddie.
why is it with guitar players the day isn't exciting unless a cheap guitar is in the mail? lol
Dean Dee, its the simple things that make us happy. Rock on.
Good thing that's a budget guitar and not a real Gibson for how many times he banged it on the table! Lol
Yeah, good point. Could have been more careful for sure...
Get a big muff for that and learn some bar chords
ballin, thanks for your suggestion I've been a quest to play 5 or minutes a day since Jan 25, so ideally I'm getting better.
Maybe its the audio but this Guitar sounds very cheap. The sound is very thin and tinny. If this is indicative the quality of sound you can expect from this guitar then my verdict is WASTE OF $$
Robert, the amp setup was not that great for this video, probably a major factor. The right amp can make anything sound great.
@@MakeItorBreakItNow Perhaps the amp wasn't the best but the guitar still sounds like a Toys R Us special. If this were a solid body guitar I would say the amp has a greater impact because there is no resonance from the body of the guitar, its all in the pickups and the amp. However, for a hollow body guitar, this should have more richness and depth to the tone, no matter what amp you are using.
@@robertpreato3891 maybe my ear is less trained than your's. Thanks for your comments I'll hook this up to a more meaningful amp see if I can tell the difference.
@@robertpreato3891 Robert , how about you take your negative mouth and beat it on outta here , AH !
