I've been kicking the Grote jazz guitar around the house for quite awhile and I'm ready to try new strings on it. Might as well do something different and try some jazzy flatwounds.

Keep the flats on that guitar they sound really good. I think most of us have enough guitars in our collections to keep a few with different sounds. Not every guitar has to have nine gauge slinkys on them.

That guitar sounds great! I keep heavy gauge flatwounds on my archtop hollowbody....one great thing about them...they don't wear out frets ever! They also last forever.....never broke a string on a flatwound guitar..

I have the similar Ibanez AG85 (bubinga top) and I've had it professionally set up for jazz(ish) stuff, with Chrome flatwounds and with lowered neck pickups. Very nice I think. Now all I have to do is learn how to play jazz(ish) stuff.

I've had chromes on my '78 Ibanez Magnum Pro for about a year now and they're great.
My Strat and Squier M80 both have Daddario half rounds. They are in between regular and flat wound strings in every way and they are definitely my favorite strings.

This is my favorite guitar at the moment...plugged in! I put these same flatwounds on it right away, and they are so sweet. Grote needs to make one with a soft edge by the elbow (like a strat) and a cutout. It vibrates even more than my big deep hollow body, which is quite stimulating. I have the "natural wood" version. It is sharp! All things considered it's the best bang for buck in my quiver. But....unplugged.....eh... I grab a Orangewood Rey CO with Acoustic flats. I think you need a more comfortable acoustic if this drives your dread away ;) Thank you!!!

I think the guitar sounds good with the flat wound strings. I use Chrome 12-52 on my archtop. I was surprised that they didn't sound dull and thuddy as well. I love the way flat wound strings feel. I had round wounds on that guitar before, and it just made it sound like a solid body, without any particular advantages. So, if you want guitars that sound and play differently, go for flats on true archtop guitars.

My punky rockabilly band Burning Mules at times used an Alvarez dreadnought set up with a lipstick pickup where the sound hole meets the fret board with flats on it for rhythm parts. It's a great for that chunky backing sound, leaves more of the high end open for the lead guitar and vocals.

Very nice sounds, Ryan. I just bought a 27 year old Casino - my first hollow body - and it's a gas to play around the house. Sounds so sweet! Not the same as the Grote, but I get a similar vibe from it. I'm astonished at the incredible low prices of Grote guitars on their China website. And I like that they're going by their own name rather than doing ripoffs of other companies' brands.

    Ryan,
Truly impressive video you did. I think it sounded great with both types of strings. I would say if you're going to play slide more the flats are better. That extra sound made by standard wound moving up and down the next, not always great. Now the sound of flat wounds on a Resonator Guitar makes alot of difference in pronounced sound. I have them on both of mine and love them. You are a very modest person you talent for breaking down the tones is incredible and I appreciate it. Keep it up.

I only have one acoustic guitar that still has phosphor bronze.. Everything else has Nickel Wound Electric D'addario. Either 11-50 Balanced (my Junior) or 12-52/53 Nyxl. Strings grounded and pickups installed.
Half rounds make my Bass feel great and sound very similar to round wound.
10-48 seem like a bad tension... Electric that's fine but acoustic it may have lost a bunch.
12-52 range NYXL would be my string set for that. For that Drop C# anyhow
Sounds fine as is with the flats

  • @daibhidhglas

Chromes are good for twangy or surfy stuff as the tension is quite high but i highly recommend trying Thomastik Jazz swings as they have a lot less tension (whole gauge down approx) and feel smoother and sleeker, tone is brighter too! i'm not a TI rep btw, just a guy who has at least three of his axes with flatwounds on, i have a mixture!

in my experience, those 'chrome' flatwounds are the worst ive tried. yes, all flats are more dead sounding than regular rounds or nickel...but the chromes were just lifeless. i'd highly recommend the thomastik swings if you want to be extra polite or the pyramid flats. both a bit pricey but they last a long time and will grant you a more genuine experience of flats...

That's a good sound, & the great thing about Flatwound Strings is that they won't scratch the frets. This is why Jazz Guys like using Flatwound Strings on both Fretless & Fretted Basses. For Fretless Basses you get an Upright Bass feel, & for Fretted Basses the Frets will last longer.

About 10 years ago I switched all my electrics to "Chromes". I take a 12 - 52 set get rid of the 52, move all the strings down one place on the guitar and put a .009" on the high side. In essence making a 9 - 42 flatwound set with plain 3rd, since most flatwound sets have wound 3rds. I'll have to look for that 10 set since that would be less work. Is the 3rd plain or wound ? The guitar sounds great but as you can tell I'm biased toward flats.

D'Addario still has web page with no mention of being closed, stuff still on Sweetwater. Don't know. I hope they will be alright, they are a good company.

I wouldn't buy an archtop jazzbox to get an acoustic sound. That's why I have an acoustic.

C'mon man. Learn some chromatics! Jazz ain't that hard. Big misconception. Half of the genre isn't even in key.

10:04. Guess I can't say you didn't technically play jazz. Half steps! Impressionism!

You are playing every style that this guitar was not made for. Poor review.

Haha look at all the guitars behind him I think he's got enough conventional tones on tap.
