10:32 I LOVED the sound of the acoustic strings through the pickup and amp. It would sound amazing blended together with the acoustic sound of the instrument.
There are many reasons why I love this channel but will only list a few. The name of it, spot on information, highly entertaining lol, take guitar modifying to the extreme, your favorite pickups are single coils, my favorite also.
The thickness and the tension difference will throw out the intonation so the saddles will need to be adjusted. It is likely to be harder to tune 5th fret against open string.
You can get old style nickel strings (like they used to use 100 years ago), Martin makes them (IMO they probably wouldn't sound much better than the electric strings) but d'addario now makes "nickel bronze" that would probably perform a little better with the pickups, and you can get them extra light (10-47). Thanks for an interesting video.
Well considering what the guitar is I think it sounds exactly how I’d expect. Probably be perfect for early blues roots and jazz since it’s kind of more of a dark tone.
Heck yeah, Willy/Cake. Nice work. Generally the first thing I play when I grab a guitar I have never played before. Though, I think this guitar might need a silver holograph sparkle racing stripe.
I wanted this guitar, in red, from the moment they put them on amazon. Everytime they drop more, they sell out before I can get around to them. lol. I WILL get one.
Reminds me of a Parlor/Concert size guitar, which I love. But with the "maple archtop" tone, which is much warmer than Spruce, but not as much as Mahogany (or even Cedar, probably)
Hi! I have two electric guitars with acoustic strings for some recordings. We get used to electric strings, so phosphor coated ones feel rough. Some even use small chunks of phosphorus that brighten the sound; really rough. At least this is how i think they do it. The Darco brand is smoothest, but dark sound. Some genres just don't sound correct with round or flat wounds.
Ummm...well interesting comparison. The main issue is that the P 90 won't pick it up as much. If you want a quieter set of strings, this is what flat wounds are for. In this video what he discovered is the jazz/blues physics. This is why I play 12s on my hollow bodies. If you want to retain the pickup get 11s or 12s on your semi hollow or hollow body guitars. They will sound similiar and crisper than the acoustic strings.
I have the 335 version of this but I really want tolhe sunburst one of these. I'd switch the tuners, rosewood bridge, and gold knobs like an old gibson es 125. Great video. I loved the song too
In place of a center block or longitudinal bracing, this - like the Epi Century - has a sheet of ribs running from butt to neck. It's SUPER thick and dampens the way the top responds to the strings.
Great accousticly for sure, but the Bronze on the strings will come through the magnetic pickup not as loud. Ghs white bronze strings are the way around that, I use them on my Gibson 330.
Hi, Ryan. Ever thought about building your own pedal? I just finished my first one, a simple but great sounding boost using a single, old-skool HQ amp transistor and a handful of other components. It's a real buzz.... when you finally get it all working, that is. I'm off my head on pain meds and weed, if I'm awake, so, if I can do it, absolutely anyone can. To add to the greatness of today, Rick Beato has just done another video on Foo Fighters. Woot!
I was singing along with you but I was singing the Cake version. They have some great covers. I was just messing with learning rock and roll lifestyle.
i guess technically i was doing my own version, Cake does is in A Willie does it in C i think and I was playing it in G. Its a fun song to play though.
Amazing tone Ryan! This volume cutting is very good for many genres indeed, should work from jazz to stoner sludge and different styles, definently very smooth drive, i will say that a very natural tone, i don't know with what model of p90 came up this nice guitar, but upgrading it maybe with a little bit hotter one can do a serious difference, also is making a lot of sense to play on the best fitting strings, i love Daddario EJ15, kind of an high end for a shredding guy like me with brighter tones....Amazing review!
Great video! I ordered today this exact model (15% discount coupon, baybeh!) and I totally love how this sounds with acoustic strings both plugged & unplugged. Any tips on the kind of acoustic strings to get?
I'm buying a 335 Grote because of the previous vid you made about this saucy lil thing. I almost bought the one you're holding but I wanted some variety and Iv'e never owned a semi-hollow before.
I did the opposite, I put electric strings on an old Harmony F hole because I want to bend them easier. The Harmony is a 3 inch thick body. It sounds different but I think it sounds OK. Anyway it is fun to experiment with.
Have you tried Flatwound strings? A Flatwound "G" string is also "wound" so only the "B" and high "E" strings are unwound. Flatwounds are usually used on Jazz guitars. They are acoustic and they are also electric strings, so the best of both worlds. Flatwounds have a deeper, fuller tone than regular acoustic guitar strings, also they are silent so when you slide your hand up and down on the neck the strings don't make the string whistle sound (that ugly scratchy noise that plain acoustic guitar stings make).
Ooops, I found your video when you installed Flatwounds. Here's the link for anyone interested. ruclips.net/video/Zh7ilLzX98U/видео.html&ab_channel=60CycleHum
I keep hoping to get a good one like you Ryan. Just got my third Grote, and the front of the guitar is cracked by the lower F hole, it had to be done at the factory because they clear coated right over it. Aside from that, every one of the three guitars have had a radically different rake to the neck , where the bridge could be low for good action, and close enough to the p-90 to get a good tone, or like the one I just got where the bridge is cranked to the hilt to clear the neck. The neck on all three has been consistently great with no high frets, so I am going to keep trying.
@@60CycleHumcast I sent an Email to the factory and here is part of their reply " But our guitar is not old. It's all new production. Maybe our quality inspection is not strict enough. Thank you for your reminder. We will improve our quality requirements in the future. "
But... Why? I use Electric nickel wound on a couple of my acoustics.. Wound 3rd and we're good.. TOM would make that irrelevant.. Try D'addario Jazz Lights pro steel 12-53 EPS590 or the Nickel Bronze Balanced Tension.. I happen to have a humbucker an internal mic and 3 element piezo on one of my acoustics.. Just use heavy strings always... Comparing you need to use similar gauges or this is pointless.. I prefer nickel over phosphor blends... It's louder because gauges. Also sounds better because tension makes it harder to fret a sharp note... And has better attack and quicker release
Great clip. This looks like a great guitar. I had two questions: One, how wide is the nut width? (I really favor wider nuts/necks). And second, how much does the guitar weigh? I'm coming at this from a Hofner Club Bass (weight just over 5lbs) so I'm spoiled.
I only wish you'd tried raising the poles under the wound strings, that would have gone some way to giving them some volume and brightness compared to the B and E.
I know there are strings like JHS White Bronze that are wound for acoustic guitars with magnetic pickups, so you should be able to get to better electric tone without volume drops between strings and still sound good acoustically.
I just bought the blue flame semi hollow body with a trapeze. I paid 340 including tax. It came and is nice but has many flaws. I won't be buying another. I do like it a lot though. Obviously not a high dollar guitar but I can upgrade it.
D'addario has nickel bronze also.. A nice 12-52 balanced tension set actually I use often with a humbucker and mix blend.. Electric with wound 3rd on acoustic is IMHO.. Better
thanks for sharing. just wondering, compared with electric (solid), how loud this guitar playing acoustically (unplugged)? Can i practice in my room at night without bothering the room next to me? thanks again :)
Okay...I'm not gonna gush on this video..BUT. I do want that guitar . lol I got trolled for talking too much on the last video he done on this guitar. BUT still not gushing.
It sounds like an acoustic guitar now. Rather than a cat trapped in the body. Totally different. You can listen to it now. Your family will be happier at least, and will stop looking for that strangled cat.
After reading this comment I went to your channel to listen to what I expected to be some great playing that would justify a cunty comment like that but low and behold there’s nothing there. Surely you’re a great guitarist though, lmfao.
You have discovered the original Jazz guitar sound; acoustic strings through a P-90 straight into the amp.
Awesome experiment! Glad you played through a song & plugged it on the amp! Thanks!
10:32 I LOVED the sound of the acoustic strings through the pickup and amp. It would sound amazing blended together with the acoustic sound of the instrument.
Nice job!...I received my Grote yesterday & played it all night...pretty great /cheap guitar...(Princeton RI..72 Deluxe Reverb & a Greer Southland)..
Thanks for the video.. I had this very question in mind today, acoustic strings on a hollow electric .. thanks for sharing

Sad Songs & Waltzes is one of my all-time favorite CAKE songs! This video was amazing, thank you for making it 🙏🏼
I mean I know it’s a Nelson song but I always think of the CAKE version of it when I play it lol
There are Jazz Gauge Electric Strings which are essentially Electric Guitar versions of Acoustic Strings sets that have the Wound 3rd.
The thickness and the tension difference will throw out the intonation so the saddles will need to be adjusted. It is likely to be harder to tune 5th fret against open string.
Just use extra light, they are usually around 10-46

That actually didn't sound too bad plugged in. Thanks for the video!
I love playing my hollowbody unplugged at night. I live where sound travels so I’m more comfortable with that versus a full size acoustic.
Definitely like the sound of the acoustic strings. More Willie is never a wrong choice.
Well considering what the guitar is I think it sounds exactly how I’d expect. Probably be perfect for early blues roots and jazz since it’s kind of more of a dark tone.

Greetings from Germany - Well done so far. Sounds interesting with Amp. Live long and prosper
It sounds really sweet with those strings through the pickup.
It sounds good amped 👍👍
I like it, I used to set around picking on an old Danelectro acousticly, play some slide with it
I love Danelectros! What model was it?
I wanted this guitar, in red, from the moment they put them on amazon. Everytime they drop more, they sell out before I can get around to them. lol. I WILL get one.
I can't speak for other guitars, but Loar 309s come with that wound G string. That sound is what made me fall in love.
Realy nice, thank you. I wondered how it will sound with acoustic strings plugged in. Sweet, jazzy old school vibe.
Pulled the trigger and bought the sunburst model; should arrive Saturday. Your three videos on the same axe left me no choice...
Reminds me of a Parlor/Concert size guitar, which I love. But with the "maple archtop" tone, which is much warmer than Spruce, but not as much as Mahogany (or even Cedar, probably)
I like it wth the acoustic strings. Real smoky and jazzy...

Thats the best sound i’ve ever heard. I am 51 though. But seriously… putting acoustics on and old 60’s tasco norma asap.

Remove the pick guard and it will allow a little more sound to come out.

That was a fun video Ryan. The real answer is Martin retro strings. They are monel so you will get the best of both worlds.

Why not use Jazz Extra Light Strings?
I recommend DR Zebra acoustic electric string set, they sound great.

Hey dude, TRY putting a set of MONEL strings on it! That is the string alloy Gibson used and designed their classic P90 and PAF pick ups around!
This is exactly what James Bay does with his Epiphone 66 and it's like his signature sound haha
I just bought this guitar for that.
WELL sung! NASHVILLE for y'all man! PLUG it in with those strings!
Could you put a mic in it with acoustic strings? Would that still keep the acoustic sound through an amp? I like what you’re doing.
Try adjusting the pickups on the wound strings closer to the strings
In the old johnny b good days, musicians used .008 - 38 gage.
There are Magnetic Pickups made for Acoustic Guitars.
