I have the Grote ES335 clone. In the 6 months I have gigged more than a dozen shows and always get compliments for sound and of course, all the curiosity. I live near Kalamazoo where Gibson manufactured for decades, so everyone around are very familiar with the original. Seems to be a great choice for me, and I'm not as worried about theft or damage. I also own a few Gibson's.
We could not make a living or build that guitar with free shipping for $170 ! As long as the wood is right, hardware and electronics can be easily upgraded ! Thanks for posting your videos.
Ryan, another great video, and thanks for taking the time to share. I got one. Fantastic guitar. The newer ones have bound F-holes, an output lack plate, and a plain black truss rod cover. I am more than impressed with this guitar. Enjoy yours, I am certainly enjoying mine.
The sound reminds me of some of the old silvertones, and some of the japanese thin bodys from the 60's. I have been looking at those on amazon, I really want one now. I would add 3 more p90's and some switches lol. So polish the frets, tuners, bridge i would go with wilkinsons) Thanks for the great review.
Check out the Dean Palomino. Sounds like what you are after. I've got one myself, I love it. It's got 3 p90s and is wired like a strat, with those quacky in between positions except beefier and more output obviously.
Grote has made high quality electric truck parts for years. Buy them for my big truck a lot. Didn't know they made guitars. Like the tone. My just have to give one a try.
Probably very under wound & ceramic powered. You're right, it SHOULD have sounded a bit more woody than it was! Sounded GOOD on the Fender amp, as it was quite scooped! Revv has a big MID hump, making it brighter. Still, I've heard worse from cheap pick ups!
Looks really good. And sounds really promising as well. Strings just need some stretching to keep their tune. Wonder what you could achieve if you took 30 minutes adjusting everything.
You should've played the intro to "Revolution" on it, that's what a P-90 (-ish) pickup on a full hollowbody is for. An ES-125T was my first good guitar, so I have a soft spot for the type. I worked a year as a janitor and saved all my money to buy that guitar -- used. I'll never part with it.
Looks good, seems like it plays good from the video. But that pickup is ehhh, weak. And not necessarily in output but just really limp sounding. Must not be a traditional P90 under that cover. That'd be the first thing I would replace. Other than that... Seems great!
I always wished I had an ear for music. He says it's already going out of tune and I'm like, really? I could hear zero difference. Oh well, I'll just keep playing out of tune so long as the neighbors don't complain. 🎸🤣
Pretty cool looking/sounding for the price! Decent quality control too... I'm tempted! Or maybe a present for my wife... She's hard to please and I wouldn't be too out of pocket if she didn't like it 😂
What I see on the photos, the string height on 1st fret is high, like for all cheap guitars. Well some basic setup things and it will improve a lot over what she already is. Nice 🎸 ...
Reminds me of the bond theme guitar and I like it. Acoustic livin room front porch back porch jamin this fits that bill too!!!! I paid 200 for a new old stock avalres regent
I think it's pretty cool 😎, and wondered about Grote because they have been somewhat appealing to me. I actually like this review and guitar,.. and for $169?🙂 Are you planning to do anymore Grote guitars?..Because I was looking at their 335 version, since fireflies were always sold out.
I'd like to have it and turn it into a messenger looking guitar, add a bridge pup n pots n caps n tighten everything up, be nice Lil beatter rock box, good Grand funk plunker..I'd take it...good review..
they were 159, then 169, then 179, now at 5-29-20 they are 199. Get the hint? Soon they will be Epihone prices for cheap guitars so get one while you can!
This guitar has much less of an archtop than an Epi Century. Also it is 24.5" scale, not 25.5", like the Epiphone. The Epi Century is strung with a wound 3rd, the Grote is not. I had unacceptable cosmetic flaws with mine. Grote made things right but I went and got the Epi Century. This guitar is not much for acoustic playing because of the heavy ribbed longitudinal bracing that runs from neck to butt. The P90 in mine got VERY dark and muddy with increasing gain.
not that i could tell. The issue ive discovered with it is that the pickup is pretty dang far away from the strings. it would sound stronger if the pickup could be closer. The fact that its full hollow means that no one is going to be using it for high gain on a live stage. But still the tone could be better and the hum to signal ratio would be better if the pickup was closer.
Why not buy the cheap guitars, then set them up well and sell them. People would probably pay for cheap guitars set up well, or even slightly upgraded.
When Gibson first made it in the early 40's, it was $125.
Now it's $169.
That's not bad.
Well, that's not taking inflation into account. In today's cost, that would be about $1800
@@MrDokek Even better! $1,800 _then_ $169 _now_ . :)
OMG! You guys floor me!

I didn’t even know Chris Elliot played guitar! Keep it up man!
MikeChiefs15 I used the money I made from cabin boy to buy my first guitar, it’s been down hill ever since.
holy shit dude! He plays with the little hand lmao
@@60CycleHumcast Sorry man, I had to laugh at that one, but that's a good responce!
Seems like the ultimate budget Jack White guitar. Highly considering!
Nicholas Tropiano I hear he is using an EVH nowadays :P

That costume was ADORABLE.
I was sold on this when you pulled out those insane Derek Trucks slide licks 😉

@@duffman18 Thanks, I'll go check it out.
It would've been nice to see if you could actually intonate the guitar. That would have made a big difference in how good it sounded.
Grote has made high quality electric truck parts for years. Buy them for my big truck a lot. Didn't know they made guitars. Like the tone. My just have to give one a try.
From PU position I expected a warmer fuller sound. Replace the P-90 with a real one, add a backbone in side, and you would have a serious guitar

I just bought one over the weekend, looking forward to use it as my learner
I'm ok dyeing under a pile of guitars. There are worse ways to go.

I bet you could record a top of the notch jazz album with this and nobody would notice
I think that guitar could be a blues monster. Has the look, maybe a higher end P90.
"I am Grote!"-nice.
Nice review. I think this guitar is a real bargain. It looks good and sounds good!
Grote, for the Dutch-impaired, means great.
and is spelt groot. These guitars are chinese
Huffing guitars...
...You are not alone.
I'd love to see an unboxing with a work boot size hole clear through the middle of the soundboard! 🤣

Worst brand name ever? Sounds like a portmanteau of gross and scrote!
I'll say it again...I don't want my guitar to sound "Grote-y" LOL
Prostate 500..
The gooch
Fun fact: you’re close. These are actually made by Grohl’s Scrotum.
It's Dutch!
Keep it up, brother. Great stuff!!!!
Apparently Grote is in the auto parts business, too. They have several listings on Amazon for indicator lights, flashers, etc.
The IYV guitars on amazon are something im intrigued by. Out of vietnam they are even cheaper than the Grote stuff.
im waiting for the brian may one to come back in stock

That guitar sounds very good, especially with the slide. Almost has a lap steel type tone with the slide.
Good review! I have been wondering about Grota. Also, the Oscar Schmidt Lee Paul is another one a bunch of people seem happy with.
I think these might be a fun little project guitar. Put a switch and a bridge P90 and it’d be a killer blues and jazz guitar.

For sub 200 total for a century/L-style guitar it's got enough character.
great costume for your kid, Ryan!
I wish it had a cutaway, otherwise looks and sounds really nice

I believe the Firefly Es335 is a better sounding guitar, more options than the single pick up. You are correct, the tone is somewhat nasal.
the firefly 338 is a completely different style of guitar.

Andrew Smith the way the strings are angled off the body you would have to do something drastic to get a bridge pickup close enough to the strings.
