Use light magic! After the first boss there are a LOT of demons with a weakness to light, and if you're playing on hard mode with the 40% decreased damage to enemies, getting insta kills will save you a lot of MP!
As long as you make use of all your resources, you should be fine in normal. Find those miman and essences. Fuse demons and exploit weaknesses. There isn't a single strategy for combat, adapt your team got each boss
SMT 5 is literally the only game I've ever played where I've felt like using inventory items and I'm happy for it. It really makes you feel special when you change an essence affinity to beat a boss or transfer a powerful skill to a new demon. Similar to postgame Xenoblade X, SMT really is more about learning and changing your strategy to best face your specific opponent. Spyglass broken btw
Now that physical skills use mp instead of hp, do I have to spend stat points on magic to increase my mp gauge or does it increase automatically with level-ups? (I want to make a physical build on nahobino) When making a physical build in nocturne, I'd just allocate all of my points to strength, vitality and sometimes agility, but if I have to give points to magic on top of all of that, I fear that I might spread them out too thin and end up with mediocre physical damage. I know the game's only been out for a day but hopefully someone can answer my question (:
You're in luck, vitality and magic don't increase hp and mp. You just get a set amount per level up. So if you're doing a physical build you don't have to increase magic at all.

The thing about items is good. Since I use the reverse compendium a lot, macca is hard to come by so if I have max inventory on an item I usually sell half of it, like 25 life stones. Or if I find myself a bit underleveled in a battle, those elemental shards can make the difference
