The biggest thing in AuDHD is the "out of sight out of mind" the amount of things ive bought and "put away" only to forget i even bought the thing is ridiculous. Its like giving gifts to future me unless they expire then its the opposite, more hassle 😅🤣 but task grouping makes life so much easier. Some days i dint even allow myself to go upstairs because thats the Chill Zone and aint any chorse getting done in the Chill Zone😂

Exactly my mother... She gets upset as fuck because of it... But that's 100% because she has her own system and has to have EVERYTHING SUPER clean or she's unable to think (that's how she says it at least). Clashing neurodivergent needs are a bloody nightmare...

if I try to make "notes" on my phone, they disappear from my mind. if I try to keep home chores and projects in a notebook...and close the cover, they disappear. when getting ready for a trip, I have to remind my husband NOT to be helpful and take my things by the door out to the truck, because each item contains a signal of something else to do or get. ADHD is fun 😅

I wasn't diagnosed with ADD/AUT until my 20's. Growing up, I would have literal meltdown crying panic attacks when my lovely mom would try to "help" and clean my room. Then she would feel bad and the crushing guilt would trigger "panic stims" for the next few hours. Bless her heart, she finally learned how to help me the "right" way.

One time my aunt "cleaned" my entire room for me while I was away from the house doing something for the day. She did it out of both trying to "fix a problem" and "doing a kindness", but I broke that day. I knew where nothing was that I couldn't immediately see, she had thrown away things I deemed important or had attached sentimental value to. Same thing with the internal tug of war between guilt over "ruining" a gift of service, and feeling violated. She still seems to be trying to make it up to me somehow, and I have no way of really dealing with that, since I don't think she's a bad person for it, nor do I hold any ill will toward her because of it, but there's no way I'll be able to forget it or erase that trauma from some corner of my psyche.
When I came home from my freshman year of college, my mom's boyfriend at the time did something similar, except he convinced my mom to move the rest of my belongings, that hadn't already been packed away, outside under a tarp so they could retrofit my old room for her to swap into. The plan had been to move my stuff into her old room later, but things were left outside too long and eventually the tarp collapsed under pooled water. It felt like the old trauma but worse. There were some heirlooms and keepsakes from my dad with that stuff. Things that had been damaged by the water and exposure. Things had disappeared. But almost everything that was still there was ruined. Staring back at me with no way for me to deal with it, but not thrown out or anything. I had to face all that destruction in person.
The beginning of losing the connection I had to that place. Like my sense of home was dying.
Sorry for the rant, but y'know, emotional scars. If anyone wants to help me clean or organize, I have to be present and consulted so I know where everything is and I can help engineer the organizing system

@@DeRien8 I'm so sorry honey. My heart is hurting just reading this. Our struggles and coping methods can be so hard for others to understand and they may try to "help" and it's just hurting. It took me years to get my mom to understand that I would love help, BUT we have to do it my way while I'm present. I totally get it. And it can get exhausting explaining this to people. I feel your struggle. Chin up love ❤️😍

The hardest part is when two people's needs are in direct opposition to each other. Like, I don't know if your water bottle by the sink needs to be that close to the edge of the counter, but that would be a recipe for disaster around me. I have a hard time with proprioception and would be constantly knocking it over by accident, leading to potentially breaking it or injuring myself. My system of keeping things away from the edge could make it harder for you to notice your water bottle.

    • @dosbabymama
      @dosbabymama Месяц назад +11

I probably wouldn't knock it down, but if it's next to the sink, that means it needs to be washed. So even if it just came out of the cabinet, I HAVE to wash it before I can fill it, because it was in the 'to be washed' section. Then I have to make sure I rinse enough (a LOT) to not taste soap.

Yeah we call this "competing access needs." Especially when two disabled people know and can articulate their needs. But that also means that sometimes they can also problem solve with each other and not take it personally. ♥️ It's always good when someone understands it's not about power or ego or shame or anything. Just accessibility and respect.

A tip for those who need to SEE things in order to remember them: try over the door shoe holders with clear pockets! They're about $10 each and they have worked so well for me. If you have doors that are too high to fit the little metal brackets on top, try using 2 shoe holders, one on each side of the door and tie them together with ribbon. The ribbon is thin enough to fit on any door plus zero damage for those who are renting. :)

If someone else moves my stuff according to THEIR system and then they can’t find it later when I ask where it is, then it sends me into a horrible meltdown. I have a system in the bathroom, of having travel-sized containers of my products in the shower, while I have their refills towards the front of the under-sink cabinet.
Also, I have an organizer (basket?) on the sink/counter, to make visible all of my regular creams and tools. And I hung up a mirror-side basket for uncommonly used goods like masks and patches, tho I hang jewely and hair-ties on its bottom hooks.
These keep things in sight, in mind. Also, when I clean, I can just pick up bits and bobs and place them back so easily!
A system that works for keeping clean can be cleansing wipes, like my mates and I have a chlorox wipe tub, on the bathroom counter. If you need to wait for water to heat or a mask to set or for a toilet to vacate, then you can wipe down a counter, a floor spot, the door handles, and/or the fixtures you can reach... then another for the toilet zone, if you're feeling zoomie!
Over-door hangers and hooks have saved me, per In Sight, In Mind.
My Grandma has had glass-doored kitchen cabinets for DECADES before learning she may uave passed down AuDHD. I still love learning her idioms, quips, and tactics from her (century of, if including her parents) multigenerationally amassed knowledge.

The worst 4 years of my life were living with housemates that would touch and move all my things (few as they were) and disrupt my systems even after I explained them and begged them not to do it. It unraveled most of the routines I had to maintain myself, which caused me to function worse and worse and be called childish and lazy for failing to maintain myself and my spaces despite doing well when we first moved in. I finally moved out when I realized it had truly come down to such weirdly undermining things like I am not allowed to have a clean water cup by the sink but the other two can leave dirty coffee cups everywhere; I was not allowed to keep my vegetables out of the fresh drawer where i can see them but they can keep theirs whereever; or similar. Living alone with your own system is the best option until you meet someone that is willing to look beyond themselves and are willing to make some compromises.

Omg, I literally started doing this as soon as I moved out at uni and had to start making my own meals and wash up afterwards. I did it to save mental and physical energy as I wouldn’t have to worry about sitting down, getting comfortable and eating and then have to immediately get up, drag myself back over to the sink and wash the dishes and clean up.
Also, it’s easier to break the momentum of doing tasks if you sit down and get comfortable between them. So standing up and eating by the sink would mean I would lose less momentum and will be more likely to wash up afterwards. I find it hard to take breaks during the day unless all my chores are done because I’m afraid I won’t be able to start again once I’ve started to relax and lost momentum, also I struggle to properly relax knowing I’ve got more chores to do later.

Maybe this is random, but I do skincare “bins”: literally small craft bins with AM skincare (plus some makeup) and PM skincare. I’m the AuDHDer who feels frenetic when there’s stuff on counters or cluttering up, well, anything. The only things on my bathroom counters are things we use every time we use the bathroom: soap and a lotion bottle. Okay, and one fake plant cuz it’s pretty.
The bins go next to the washcloths I use to clean my face in a drawer or under the sink. Face cleansers are in the bins, not the shower (I find there’s significantly less irritation on my face from the “drag” I experienced in the shower-likely because my body can’t tolerate the heat required to properly get sunscreen off my face), so when I go to get a washcloth, everything is right there. I pull the appropriate bin out, put it on the counter, do my thing, then return the bin before leaving the bathroom. So helpful for me.

Hands down the best dystem I have foubd for keeping my house clean-ish with ADHD is just having containers for the different piles that I make naturally anyway.
Like, instead of having four piles of dirty laundry and a big hamper that's only 1/4 full, I just have five small hampers for each of the different piles. And I keep all my hygiene stuff out next to the sink, but on a pretty little stand so it looks neat and organised and contained, but is still just there when I need it. Same thing for makeup. There's a tray next to my bed that holds my meds, so I see them first thing when I wake up, and a smaller bowl for things like lip balm, jewellery and hair ties that always seem to end up scattered all over the place otherwise.
Water bottle just gets carried around with me and is always filled, and I have a second identical one that I immediately switch out when I wash the first one. There's a fruit bowl and a jar full of musli bars right next to the kettle, so when I inevitably go to make myself another tea or coffee it's super easy to grab a healthy snack. Convenience and visibility are key.

The three types of cleaning! Autism, ADHD, and energy efficient. Autism likes when I do tasks in order and sort things, like cleaning up all the trash, then all the dishes, etc. work's for small tasks and is satisfying. ADHD, I'm doing all of the things at once, follows dopamine, comes back to realize I abandoned half of everything I started. Energy efficient, grab a couple things that go to similar places, do whatever task is right in front of you and then move right to the next, if I can get it done on my way to do something else, do it. Doesn't waste energy but is motivating to see progress. Works well with music.
