On the topic of constraction continuing, I still think that BIONICLE could be brought back and work well. That may sound crazy after what happened with G2, but I happen to have lived long enough to remember a similar action figure franchise that was almost destroyed by its own G2. That's right, I'm talking about Transformers, a rich and pretty convoluted franchise that has had countless re-imaginings and iterations throughout the decades. In fact, Transformers shows that convoluted lore and complex story telling can HELP keep make new incarnations successful.
What BIONICLE needs to thrive is a Beast Wars, as in, a line that is so good in the media and story it offers that kids and former fans can't help but be brought in.

@@austinreed7343 I think it would be a perfect starting point, from what I've gathered from his videos his story takes place in the far future. You could have Glatorians and Matoran/Toa integrated into a new society and set it like 500 years in the future or something. Then have some new threat (Aliens of some kind) invade the planet and a new team of heroes has to find the Mask of time to stop the invasion or something. Connect the story to the old one instead of trying to reinvent it like G-2 tried and failed to do.

Nick on Planet Ripple, maybe if instead of the Hero’s fighting giant creatures, what if they went full exo force and have the villains turn from simple crooks to full fledged terrorists, having the villains piloting giant robots themselves, and the Hero’s are forced to raise their game. Imagine how cool it would be. Though I do like the creatures themselves, they look really cool, and they would make really convincing rahi, I just wish they gave the species an actual name, at least brain atack actually named the animals that the brains took control of real names like that was their species, but instead we just got Flyer Beast

@JP Nelson Did you even see the video? Hero Factory got off to a bad start, but since 2012 at the latest, the sets have had the quality of a Bionicle set. Bionicle is about the story, Hero Factory is about building your own character. The new sytem from Hero Factory was awesome and you could even use it with Bionicle. Bionicle was a very long time from 2001 to 2010 and the story became more and more difficult to explain to new beginners. Hero factory wanted to be so simple, it did not want to have a proper profound story, which is perfect for beginners. I think it's a shame that so many hate Hero Factory because of its weak story. Hero Factory and Bionicle were toys and both did a good job as toys. Bionicle was your childhood, and Hero Factory was his. Let him like his childhood but he does not say anything against yours.
And besides, what I find very funny: At that time the Afols Bionicle hated because it was not the same as normal Lego. Why you Bionicle fans defended you and found it not fair, because both are from Lego and there are just other parts. And today you hate Hero Factory and Bionicle G2 because it's not the same as Bionicle G1. And the people who played with Hero Factory have to defend themselves that they are just different parts than Bionicle G1.

Yeah this theme would have potential to return on its own, like hell they wouldn't even need to reboot it really just bring some more new characters, maybe even make it like a bit of a community-driven theme that most popular and best quality characters(with rule of no parts modification) would be turned into actual sets, maybe even like give the creators preview of new parts, just to add them in new wave, and let them figure out what they can do with them

I hear ya, there. I didn't start appreciating CCBS until Witch Doctor came out, and he was by far one of the most impressive sets I'd ever built, and I think I also had him built longer than even the also amazing Maxilos. It was amazing just how filled-out he was, and it honestly is something I wish they did more with in later series. I don't have many regrets for other HF waves, but if there's one wave I really wish I had gotten some sets from, it would have to be the final one. I honestly never even knew it was a thing, but I would have bought the sets like hot cakes, because it was essentially the closest I think we'll ever see to the likes of EXO-Force, again, especially with how creatively stagnant LEGO has become by this point.

I remember your old videos on Hero Factory, Nick. I was just rewatching your video on Invaders from Below and looking back on my comment, I think I was a little too harsh on Hero Factory. Yes, following Bionicle G1 did set up some high expectations that HF couldn't have lived up to, but it gave us the great CCBS system that Bionicle G2 would capitalize on. While I wouldn't say Hero Factory is anything special, the fact that the CCBS system came out of it does make the theme noteworthy for that reason alone.

OK I'm well past my whole "Hero factory killed bionicle and killed my childhood" mentality but that's one thing that actually irritates me. I can't believe how wasted the story was. When you look back on it, Bionicle had a very generic story when it first started. Heros come, grab the McGuffin, stop the bad animals, beat the villain. It then took that premise and expanded with character development and lore. Hero Factory seemed like it wanted to escalate with its story but never did. The fact this line ended without a proper finale makes it feel like these characters are the exact same as when the line first started. I can appreciate some of the sets but the story was weak and even simpler Lego themes like knights kingdom or Ultra agents had rising tension.

Bionicle also had the advantage of having a mystery behind it, Makuta for me never appeared until 2003 (never finished the online game) so I had no idea what he looked like and by the time the comics moved onto the bohrak line I was still wondering what the Toa did to stop Makuta or if he just tricked them, almost like the immediate threat of the bohrak made me forget and try to figure out where they came from and why they were doing what they were doing, that level of mystery kept me going for years and unfortunately hero factory didn’t generate that level of mystery and even when it was getting to that point they let the opportunity slip through there fingers letting a good line suffer because of it

Well it was dished out when cartoons were starting to decline into generic kiddy bullshit you see on tv these days. I guess they wanted to simplify the story, but went too far and just gave us the kind of thing you see everywhere else. The less said about the show, the better.

Grant Moore While I can see what you’re saying, I generally like to not think about brain attack and IFB since they are really where the series died. Really if you just look at waves 1-3 I can see a pretty well developed series with pretty decent characters. Breakout was generally just good as a story, but was the last episode to really have those original GOOD characters. But if you were to include BA and IFB I could see where you are coming from.

It had that nice mix of color, style, and story that held on to the essence of classic Lego. I remember seeing Hero Factory on the Lego site when it was new (before the sets sold). When I saw the commercials, I was hooked. (It even made me forget about Bionicle until years later like 2012 when I got into Bionicle again)
When 2013 rolled around, I didn't buy any of the set (It was around the time I slowly stopped caring about Lego until late 2017 and 2018 when I started to collect since then). But then around the time when Invasion from Below was released, I decided to buy one (Probably cuz I started to like mechs more and more). It was the first time I ever bought a Stormer set.
Now years after that in 2018, I was thinking back to Hero Factory, and I didn't really like the monsters in Brain Attack and Invasion from Below. I mean the point of the sets was that the heroes fight against evil monsters and villains. Yes 3.0 had monsters (But I think they made it more right), but I find BA and IFB's monsters (kinda) bland fsr. What I liked about the villains in the previous sets was that they didn't only have different personalities, but they had unique look. Well BA had interesting looks, but they kinda felt a bit lame to me. But the monsters in IFB.... OMG what happened here? They looked like they copy pasted each other but had different parts just to make them "unique". I mean yes, they are the queen's children, and it makes sense, I get that and it's nothing wrong with that. But it felt like Lego didn't have any more interesting monster designs left, and have no other choice to take the original monster and change them a bit.
If Hero Factory made a some sort of return (but not like what happened to Bionicle), I want to see new and interesting villains and monsters. (and probably even returning villains and monsters)

Literally taken the words out of my mouth, I'm frankly speechless that a lot of my own musings have been put into words better than I could really articulate.
It always bothered me that HF had this clash of "build what you want" with innate character personalities. This wouldn't be a problem in something like Bionicle that had such a focus on serialised narrative. HF however had this awful habit of dropping incredible plot twists for a monster of the week format that just couldn't hold up. It really emphasised the number of redesigns a character would go through and also de incentivised following the theme. Why care about any of these characters or plot threads when it gets reset before it's even released?
The treatment of constraction storylines by LEGO post Bionicle G1 is in of itself an interesting discussion. I feel that in it's twilight years G1 became this convoluted animal that was very tough for newcomers and even seasoned fans to keep track of, and LEGO is scared to reach those levels again. Unfortunately I think their storytelling fell incredibly flat, especially so in G2. I feel no attachment to it at all, to a point where I'm likely going to sell off a lot of the sets: I don't think they'll be remembered or have the same impact as those original sets. As figures they may be more advanced, but it doesn't hold the same charm or care. Bit of a transformers effect I feel.
I don't feel this way with Hero Factory though, I have more respect for it in the sense that it was proud to do it's own thing, and for that it should be remembered and respected.

They shoulda made the beasts more animalistic like the savage planet animals and the heroes more medieval looking, kinda like nexo knights with futuristic knights. Make bulk a Paladin, give Breez small daggers, have Rocka use that crossbow from breakout and maybe put a print with a reticle on it for his visor to replace his scope on his mask or something.
It woulda been nice if we got more base colour on the characters aswell. Save things like trans blue for the villains or silver for bulk. The heroes have to pop on store shelves so the kids go “I want that one”.

I have a fair share of them up for display and am still on the hunt for some of those i missed out on as a kid. This is what got me both into lego and actiom fogures, and i will alwayd cherish this series

Great video Nick, I'm honestly surprised at how fitting the Ratchet and Clank music is with Hero Factory.

Was I the only one who noticed that ferno xl's shield is the hero factory it self? Speaking of which
The fire element behind make me realize the hero factory being destroyed in the end of the brain attack would have been a better way to keep the theme fresh.

Bought about a hundred bionicle/herofactory sets for about $30.. About 18 kilo's of lego of which 13 kilos belong to the bionicle/hero factory sets. This sure has some sadness in it..

Gosh I remember when I built half a meter long Brain from this series using 90%of the parts I had.

You know, this is a random thought, but if Lego ever did a Slizers reboot, I'd be down for it.

The flyer Beast will always be special to me, because my first MoC came from it. His name was Cyborg.

I forgot something actually came of Hero Factory. Shame they just developed this new standard for these figures and then never experimented with parts the way Bionicle did

What turned me off of HF was how little personality it really had -especially in comparison to Bionicle; the concept was just nowhere near interesting enough to hook me and only made me roll my eyes at how trite it could be. Even the designs of the toys more often than not didn't stand out to me as little more than generic. Despite the cool brochure and the Greg Farshtey books doing a decent job to make the concept sound more interesting, the brand overall just continued to waste most of it's potential, experimenting more than finalizing.
It just doesn't and I suspect never would amount the cool and otherworldly persona that Bionicle had. even if only focused on one era, Bionicle toys more often than not still stood out with tons of unique personality. HF just... didn't

I grew up with the world and characters of Bionicle, but Hero Factory and it’s system felt so much more usable than the more Technic centric G1 Bionicle. I guess there was less of a learning curve? Sure, those huge Technic things from Bionicle were awesome, but making something like that as a 10 year old would be super daunting without instructions. With Hero Factory, that difficulty gap felt smaller, and a lot of what you know from Furno 2.0 is still relevant for something like Fire Lord. I don’t think I’d say the same for a Voyatoran and Brutaka.
But with CCBS, all the components are still there for you to discover and exposit on yourself. New techniques and pieces show up in the main lines and you try to incorporate those into older designs. Eventually you get the best of System, Technic, Bionicle, and CCBS. The designs and complexity evolved with the builders, it didn’t go backwards like with Bionicle.
Basically, what I’m saying is that I made a lot more MOCs with CCBS parts than I ever did without CCBS. Yeah, that pretty much says it.
But the story was still bad. Worse than G2, yeah I said it.
