    Chima was such a victim of circumstance. It started with instant hate since it rose from the ashes of Ninjago and the lackluster show was the second strike. It seemed like it was so hated at the time and now there are a lot of fans nostalgic for it. Give it a few years and these, now affordable, sets will skyrocket in price. If you want Chima I’d say buy the sets now.

      @@gone9820 honestly dude this whole little situation just goes to show how basic the minds of some children are. I mean there's nothing more basic and black and blue boyish than freaking ninjas... You got to be somewhat open-minded to get into a story and universe like chima. With that being said as a kid I totally hated Ninjago thinking it was bland and uninspired. Chima on the other hand was this perfect storm of fresh and new while also holding on to the old zany and epic animal designs of old Lego sets.

      @@CallMeAfterLaughter "Chima is better than the recent seasons of Ninjago"
      This... this is so funny. How the heck could 3 crappy season surpass the wonderfully writing of Sons Of Garmadon and Hunted? Even March Of The Oni is better than the whole Chima series. I mean, seriously, how could a bad executed story with poor characters surpass a story with a dark tone and great characters and villains?
      "People only hated it because they like Ninjago better"
      Well, that's "half-true", but there are a other reasons of why people didn't like it. The first one is that the Thundercats fans not only saw it as a rip-off of the mentioned franchise, but also as a replacement of the anime series that was going to be cancelled near the year of debut of Chima. The second one is that even if someone didn't know about Ninjago, they could easily dislike it because of the low quality of the series itself. Crappy jokes, bad characters, poor written stories, it's hard not to dislike that.

      StevenThunder 12 I was a huge Ninjago fanboy who hated Chima when it came out but over time as I got older I started to like Chima more. The reason I like Chima more is because the lore and plot is consistent and steady instead of constantly evolving out of the blue just to push a new story. Ninjago started out as simple ninjas vs the skeleton army and a quest to get these elemental golden weapons, but then all of a sudden there’s an ancient race of snakes led by the evil Pythor and also a green ninja that we just forgot about and it turns out all along those ancient weapons could be used to summon advanced vehicles, oh and also the snakes are actually nice, it’s this overlord guy who’s the enemy and actually we forgot to mention the green ninja is actually the flying magical dragon-summoning golden ninja, have you heard of the anocondrai? They were always good snakes. Ah fuck it, EVERYONE CAN SUMMON A DRAGON! Chima took it’s lore slow and steady and introduced new things gradually. The several tribes of animals that evolved intelligently and physically through this magic Chi and live in a world depending on balance to stay stable, save for one of each tribe who chose to stay simple. Outside of Chima is a savage uncharted world inhabited by savage tribes. Then two seasons later they introduce this ice vs fire plot that doesn’t interfere with the previous lore but instead adds its own place in the lore in a way that makes sense

    Chima's hatedom is interesting to me because when it was announced, I was excited! I was someone who grew up fairly poor so it was cheaper and more space efficient to give me a DS and same Lego games. So my childhood experience with Lego was more about consuming media and nostalgia for shows/games than toys. So when Ninjago came out, I ate it up. It was one of my first times getting super invested in a story driven show. I was sad when it "ended," sure, but I'll never forget how Chima's trailer dropped literally right after Ninjago's "series finale." Most of my sadness was quickly dismissed when I saw oooh, new Lego show? Mkay, I loved this Lego show to death, I'm sure I'll love the next one! I was so excited, I remember being so happy that we got another Lego show! This one will probably also be a big franchise with video games and I'll probably get the complete series on DVD to rewatch over and over again and it'll be so cool and-
    I don't think I disliked Chima as a show because it "killed" Ninjago. (Hell, I'd say I was more let down than hating on it) I think I expected too much of it. I, like Lego, expected it to be the new Ninjago. But 1. I might've been too attached to Ninjago. After all, Chima aired less than two months after Ninjago's "final episode." 2. it just didn't captivate me the same way within the first few episodes, and 3. it just isn't Ninjago. It's Chima. It was meant to fill same spot on the shelf, but in terms of a franchise, it's very distinctly it's own thing. What appealed to me about Ninjago wouldn't be present in Chima. Now that I'm older, I can appreciate the sets, something I couldn't do as a kid since I could only take in so much in commercials. I still don't own any, but I can tell, looking more into it and seeing pictures, that the theme was so well designed. But the show still didn't do much for me. Sad though. Like, I think Nexo Knights was better written from what little I saw, but I tuned out of that one quicker than I did with Chima because it was missing something. As lackluster as Chima was as a show, I appreciated the world it built. Not so much the lore, but the aesthetics. Nexo was missing something that Ninjago had, but Chima? It had that missing piece, maybe even more. Chima will always stand out to me. I was so disappointed in the story, but I will never forget the way it looked and the feelings invoked by the designs alone. Too bad I'll always remember the hype and aesthetics better than the story and characters...

    I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned or thought of this but I've always thought a future wave of Chima that would be underwater themed would be the bomb. You could have the same tribes at war, say dark octopi and noble seahorses, with vehicles like a giant turtle sub and having manta ray steeds. Could have Laval and co. In it but wearing scuba gear or having their own underwater base. I'm not sure if that would be phoned in or cool though as opposed to focusing on entirely new tribes. A main plotline would be just as wars are fought on the surface, no one realized there was conflict going on in the depths. It all looks good in my head 😅

    • @yashjoseph3544
      @yashjoseph3544 4 года назад +6

      It would've been cool to see underwater tribes like dolphins, whales and sharks. Sorta like the Atlantis sets from a long time ago but much more detailed and interesting. And there could be legend beasts for the respective tribes. It was such a missed opportunity for season 3 not to include legend beasts for the villains. It would be really cool to see massive whales and sharks fighting it out underwater with underwater vehicles in the mix as well. It's a shame it would never happen, but dreams will always live on.

    • @yashjoseph3544
      @yashjoseph3544 4 года назад +3

      But the main concern is how the stakes would be raised from the previous seasons. Season 1 had Chima being ripped apart by former friends and their armies over Chi. Season 2 had the race against time to get the legend beasts from the Crawlers to restart the falls so Chima wouldn't be torn by natural disasters. And season 3 had the Hunters marching over Chima and trying to turn it into a desolate frozen wasteland. Also, the finale of the show revealed that their home was actually a floating island above a larger land, so where would an ocean be located?

    Thank you for being a honest review that didn't butcher Chima. Most people would boil this series down to "haha funny furries" when they're not even furries anyways, just funny animals. I was obsessed with the show as a kid... I unfortunately didn't care enough about the sets and now I regret it... I'm so happy to see that there are people who genuinely like Chima as it is - the care, love and passion the theme got, all ruined because of bad timing. If ninjago failed, then Chima would've been alive to this day.

  • @That0neJawn
    @That0neJawn 3 года назад +5

    I loved Chima. The sets more, but also the show, actually.
    I am still sad it ended so soon. To this day.
    But at least it had a worthy end. Ninjago has been revived so often... Chima had one story, three arcs, a good ending.
    It would be too convoluted now if we had EVEN MORE tribes. They would've probably just improved the current ones.
    Again, I loved this theme. It was great... I had a lot of croc stuff and my brother some big lion sets... And then, when the Ice tribes came, we put them into diplomatic meetings to oppose the new threat.
    Everytime I miss the theme, I go back to this video. Sometimes it feels like Nick was one of the few People appreciating Chima.
    In case you see this;
    Thank you so much, Nick.

    I ducking loved Chima for basically all of my life. Even though I didn't buy all of them, I wished that there were more CCBS characters (Not the Fire or Ice, those were partially trash.), because I bought the hell out of it. Also, I thought the heads underneath terrified me. Also, these weapons were so heavy that I had to use baseplates to hold them. I was so into Chima that I'd literally quote any of it. Chima also started my love for stories of balance and war. Technically, I'm proud to state that Chima is my favorite LEGO set. In fact, I got pissed off whenever I heard that Chi were just drugs. I just defended it as much as I could. I then got sad when I heard it got cancelled. Ah, I loved Chima.
    Ok, I think every single LEGO fan will hate me, but Chima is better than Ninjago. Ninjago hasn't aged well for me.

    I LOVE Chima. Chima means so much to me, and, it's so ironic because I started off like every other mad 12 year old Ninjago fan when it was announced- and was stated to replace Ninjago. The show was... goofy, but I really do think they hit gold sometimes even there, I loved the fact that Laval was basically the cause of all the problems- and that subtext on handing out drugs, almost. Probably not intentional, but I get a good laugh when I think about all the little ramifications scattered throughout the storyline all starting from that one mistake.
    The theme itself is technically still alive, it's confirmed as one of Ninjago's '16 realms' and Tommy himself has been hinting it's return in some fashion for a little bit now, I'm hopeful for the future- as this series truly did have heart. It wasn't afraid of what it was, and it tried to embrace all the things that made it what it was entirely. And, as you said, the final 4 waves weren't the tiny tie off at the end, but a proper and fully fleshed out concept. Chima ran its course but didn't get renewed, Nexo Knights just... was cancelled. A lot of people liked to pretend that Chima was some theme that did awfully, that it never sold anything- and all that. That just straight up wasn't true, it wasn't exactly Star Wars, but when you take into account what it was competing against at the time within Lego's own catalogue. It's surprising to imagine it selling poorly, at least for me.
    Ninjago's latest wave filled me with so much intrigue when the leaks came out, and while it's obviously now just their own thing- perhaps the similarities just try to reference the final waves of Chima. I think it's interesting to compare Ninjago and Chima as at the root of it all, they both had SO much potential, and while Ninjago is still going- perhaps starting to be to my waning interest, I'm just glad the writers and creators cared enough to connect them.

      This year's remakes of sets like Cole's Driller and Jay's Jet make the originals look like crap. The redesigns show just how far lego has come, what they can do now. While I like most of ninjago's post-rebooted builds I honestly don't think the original, pre-cancellation sets hold up very well. Chima's aged a bit better. Like I said, they raised the bar really high from where it was at the time. And now I look at what they're able to do and just wonder how MIND BLOWING new Chima builds would be nowadays.

      @@NickonPlanetRipple Legacy has shown the old sets up in such a dramatic way, although debates are rife over whether or not some sets were made worse (The Dragons), some like the Ninja vehicles and the monastery seriously do just run laps around the originals. It took the pictures of the new monastery for me to wake up and realise how inaccurate, and just plain the 2011 one was. I just wish Ninjago would do more buildings, they always knock vehicles out of the park in my opinion- but they just make SO many. The show's just given up on explaining how they get them, I suppose they're just the best sellers. Ninja. In massively oversized monster trucks. Right. :P

    Legends of Chima was... an interesting one, which had a lot of concepts I enjoyed, even if it wasn't perfect. One one hand, I'm quite a fan of anthro animal fantasy worlds, especially unique ones like the one Chima had (and of course, Thundercats 2011, which I am still bitter about it's cancellation to this day), since most anthro animal-based fantasy worlds have a tendency to be Redwall clones and be flat out medieval fantasy (usually with rodent-based characters like mice or rabbits as the main characters), so something like Chima really stuck out from the bunch.
    On the other hand, I feel like Lego didn't utilize the full potential that Chima had, and I feel it's partly due to bad timing. Coming off the tail of Thundercats 2011 being cancelled and having a similar aesthetic to that series (be it intentional or not) was likely the biggest reason it failed, turning both Lego fans and non-Lego fans off, but it could also be because Lego didn't really utilize the concepts it presented properly, since it seemed quite ambitious, but you could say the same thing for Bionicle, and that ended up being one of their biggest successes.
    I also feel that it was because of changes in the entertainment landscape as well, as kids were wanting to play more with toys based on pre-existing franchises like Star Wars and Marvel, given the Marvel Cinematic Universe had just finished Phase 1, and Disney had recently bought the rights to Star Wars with The Force Awakens coming out within the next year, so anything based on more original properties wasn't really in the interest of toy companies, who wanted to profit off the success of what was popular at the time. Ninjago was already established at the time, so people had no problem with it, but in the 2010's it's not easy to be an original brand not based on a pre-existing property, given how big entertainment corporations control virtually everything and rely on what they view as profitable more than anything else.
    As you said, Chima could have been the next Bionicle, but it failed mainly because it came out at a bad time, along with being too ambitious for it's own good. Even Bionicle started out small and didn't become overly ambitious until time went on, and I feel that's what caused Bionicle to fall apart towards the end of G1. Bionicle G2 also had some of the same problems Chima did (as well as many, MANY other problems), but that's another story.

    • @NickonPlanetRipple
      @NickonPlanetRipple  4 года назад +3

      Indeed. Bionicle and Ninjago were happy accidents. They BECAME big because they just worked. But Chima was basically bred in a lab to be Lego's BIGGEST THEME EVAAAAAR and... you can't always expect that to work.

      @@NickonPlanetRipple Well it didn't help that they rushed it out and it didn't gel well with people, along with the similarities in aesthetic to Thundercats 2011, a series killed off ironically because of "toy sales" being replaced by a series made by _Lego_ of all companies, so a lot of people, including Lego fans were turned off by it. Both Bionicle and Ninjago started out small and simple, yes Bionicle was more complex than Ninjago at first, but even then it was still rather small and simple, and people got into them because of the story and characters that those worlds presented.
      The animated series of Chima sucked because of how much of a blatant toy advertisement it was, in a similar fashion to the cartoons of the 80's. Even Ninjago was more subtle about it's toyetic nature. The Chima animated series was what caused people to have bad first impressions of it, and the ending of the final episode where the land of Chima is on a floating continent just showed you how much wasted potential there was with this franchise. Lego put all their eggs into one basket and didn't give the series room to breathe. It took many years for Bionicle to become the franchise people love it for, it took years for Ninjago to get to where it is now, Chima was never given a chance.
      It's going to be a while before another franchise as unique as Chima shows up, or Lego comes up with another line such as it, considering we live in a time where everything's a reboot or an adaptation of a pre-existing franchise and newer original franchises are never given a chance.

    Rewatching this yet again and now have a Chima Theory. As you said, it would be natural for the ultra build Chima figures to interact with the regular system sets bc the ultra builds are essentially astral projections of the respective characters "combat avatars" given physical form.
    The Chi orbs, when used, give us a glimpse of the characters "combat avatar" for lack of a better term when they access a small amount of the orbs power in order to boost their physical abilities. Alternatively, when a tribe warrior calls upon the full power of a Chi orb, they are essentially a conduit for that power, which allows them to give physical form to their combat avatar. This would give them a massive advantage in combat.

    I was introduced to lego's in an odd way. I liked lego Ninjago, but by the end of the second season, it kinda began to fall apart for me. Reflected by the fact I only got 4 sets from it. But my dad got me the lego club magazine, and I was introduced to a whole new world of what lego themes exist. 2 magazines after my first, and Chima came. I fell in love with it from the start. I still love it. It truly was an amazing theme, and just so cool and unique. I hadn't seen much of anything like that before in my short exposure to lego. I was sad when it ended, but it still holds a place in my heart. You aren't alone in big fans of Chima.
