I own a 1998 ST1100 with ABS and this year in June with my wife we rode around France and Spain. The bike was faultless and very comfortable except a bit heavy when fully loaded and on those twisty mountain roads.
Great find!! Good job on going thru and troubleshooting all the systems, using logic, being methodical and above all patience. Bike is very lucky indeed.
You are a Lucky Man. 200$ for a running ST 1100. You can go to the end of the world for almost free in that bike. I have one for 2 years now and can't stop of ride it
Great bike, if you plan on keeping it get a set of "JIS" screwdrivers. Those Japanese motorcycles have screws that look like Phillips, but they aren't. You will save yourself a lot of headache replacing stripped screws.
Absolute bargain. I had a 1992 that I paid $2000 for. I rode it from Texas to Colorado and back and all around the Texas Hill Country. I raced a 700 HP Mustang from a dead stop and smoked him at 50 yards and let off at that point. It wheelied which surprised me, only time I ever got on it that hard. You know the ST is called Pan European over seas. Phenomenal bike.
Some general tips: • Remove all the old gas, add Berryman's and top it off with new gas • Flush the brake fluid, flush the radiator fluid, change oil and oil filter • Pull the plugs, check condition, squirt some Marvel Mystery Oil into the cylinders, turn over the engine a few times • Compression check, lube throttle cable, lube swingarm, lube clutch and brake pivots • Do not use grease on the carb seals, use silicone grease. Pure silicone spray will help soften them up • Check alternator output • Tire pressure check. How old are those tires?
I had an 84 Goldwing I had to rework completely... then rode it for years. I would love to get my hands on a ST like yours. You did a nice job diagnosing the problems. Fun fact...I met a man and wife on The Blue Ridge Parkway riding an ST, and he was a regional president of The Goldwing Road Riders Association.
Check to see if it has had an alternator upgrade. The 28 amp oil bath alternator is prone to failure and no longer available. There is a kit available to upgrade it to the 40 amp air cooled unit. Also check the main relay ( red connector under a rubber boot) for signs of corrosion or melting.
A couple more things to mention- I'd be concerned about the age of the tires. Even stretching out to seven or eight years might be okay, but if those are ten-plus it could be an unpleasant surprise. I have a relative who didn't take that into consideration and it cost him a collarbone, a few ribs, and a couple weeks of work missed. There's an elongated oval with four numerals on the sidewall. They are the week and year of manufacture. My apologies if that's old news. PJ-1 makes an excellent cable lube. Along with Motion Pro's cable lube tool, it will greatly improve the throttle action. These STs were such great bikes, from when Honda was at the peak of its powers. While I had its competitor back then, the Concours 1000, and I preferred the lighter weight and what I took to be better sporty-time handling, I did ride both the ST11 and ST13 and they are fabulous motorcycles. My modern-day equivalent is now an FJR1300, unbelievably sport-capable and fifty pounds lighter than the ST11, but if all I could get was the ST, it wouldn't be the end of the world. Enjoy that thing.
Nice video! I have the identical bike, same year, but with 134k miles. If you decide to keep it, do yourself a favor and add a voltmeter. The early ST's (91-95 I believe) have the oil-cooled 28A alternator that is known to fail at some point, the Achilles Heel of that bike. Mine is in the process of being converted to a 40A unit, but its a lot of work.
I've been riding a 1995 ST1100 for many years. I've been looking for a new bike for about the last 5 years but the problem is, there isn't a better sport touring bike available. In my mind, its the best ever made. Like yaitsred said though, if it hasn't already been done, do the alternator upgrade. The 28 amp alternator will start to leak oil around 60K to 80k.
I had an ST1300 and loved it. My only dislike was that all the engine heat comes out the side vents right in front of your shins and even wearing jeans, my shins would be red after riding.
This happened to my bikes front break. My piston stuck due to grime and gunk. Fine steel wool or fine sandpaper to freshen them up and new o-rings did the trick
The swing arm is a must to check as they rust, sign it needs to be done is the aftermarket exhaust, you need to take off the back wheel to check the top, I’ve had a few st1100
i have had the same sort of story with my st1100. I would recommend getting some JIS screwdrivers to work on Hondas. They are so nice to use. Enjoyed the video tho
I thought my BMW was hard to work on... those carbs look like a nightmare to access. Still a beautiful bike. I thought about getting one but found a 1100GS for a great price.
You need to soak the throttle with oil overnight then your front brakes should be drained all the fluid and replace with a new one.bleed it properly.adjust your throttle to 1.5.
200 usd. The family robbed the old man and sold his baby for this measly amount and i cant blame you for scooping it up, but that old man im sure is turning in his grave. Guess the family was wealthy and this is worth 10 times the amount.
You just need to fill this bike up with 98 octane and then RUN IT. And its in awesome shape, and instead of trying to move it while not being on it with the bodymass you have it will be much better to just get on it and that way have control better of the weight. If you run it with the good stuff it will be clear within a half hour like it was new. But you should give ut the beans. The American donkey fuel with so less octane is crap for these bikes. Anyway, good effort.
For the idle jets, you take some strains from an electric cable and get one strain of copper inside it and then you scrub the jet up and down on that copper removing old gunk you can't see. It's like you have put all the effort in but all these small things... You will learn. And please don't poke everything with the screwdriver. I almost get triggered seeing the screwdriver on the carb pistons, and on the brake master, wow, that was hard to watch.
You absolutely stole this bike. Jump on and head across the country. I had an ST1300 and it carried me 70k miles with never a glitch - these things are absolutely bulletproof - my buddy put over 200k on his. Yeah, it's heavy, but it lives for the open road.
I had an ST1100 now have the ST1300 they’re great bikes. I’d definitely buy another 1100 for $200 what a steal
No kidding!
One of the best bikes Honda ever made
I own one of these and rode 145 miles today in Illinois and Iowa . Great bike from Honda !
Watching you bring this bike back step by step was very satisfying to watch. Keep up the good work.
YOU CALL THAT GOOD WORK ,,,?????? i am getting nervous just by watching this guys strugle

Yes, definitely need to pick up a set!
Wow, I cant believe the size of that air cleaner! Sweet ride for $200!
The engineering on this machine is 🤯
very well put together video, clearly spoken, no music, nice details. A pleasure to watch.😊
Thank you for the kind words!

My alternator finally packed it in at 134k miles, so I bought all of the conversion parts and the directions, but it has sat for some time. :(
@@JamesLaman-d1k There are lots of people who have done the conversion. Shouldn't be too much trouble finding help.

Hi great video on the wee bike, brilliant price sounds great, from marty in Belfast northern Ireland God bless
Thanks Marty!

They're definitely in there!
What a beautiful bike, that was a steal. You should make a good $ flipping that 👍
Sounded like an ole Ducati twin there till the 4th carb was fixed
😂 It did
That sucks you dropped it, just replace the broken plastic part and you're good to go, $200, damn!
Yes certainly a shame, but great crash bar design by Honda!
VTEC just like Honda cars, at high rpm, valve lift is huge.
Would be cool if they put it on a bike!
Excelente trabajo y que buen precio conseguiste!
BG makes great oil & fuel treatment products.
That bike is in amazingly good condition under the skin
It is! Definitely was a garage queen

No doubt! They didn't need the money, just wanted it gone
Did you or should you use silicone lube on the rubber when reinstalling the carbs?
Yep, that stuff is great for dry rubber
they won't be phillips head screws they will Be JIS and you can strip out the heads if you do not get a set of JIS screwdrivers
Yep! Luckily nothing was too tight on this, but JIS is the way to go

My comments may seem salty I'm sorry about that, you should reward us with a 2 minute clip were you pulled through a couple gears or three at WOT.
Great find!!!!
No worries! Thanks for watching and the suggestions

Definitely too good to pass up! 200k is impressive
Put oil in the reservoir. At all times 26:45
clean the carbs
Keep watching and I do 🙂
You could’ve offered more under the circumstances 😢
They didn't need/want the money. Just wanted it gone. It will be ridden and cared for, which I hope would have made the previous owner happy
lucky find
Are you going to sell it after you get it runing?
Just planning on keeping it as a cruiser
@@NotEnoughProjects ok, thank you
Cheap motoring..looks new
I don't think you could buy that bike for 200.00$
I didn't think so either!
I'll take that off of you!
300 bucks
Sold! 😂
16:15 you all can thank me later.
Yea, sure.
On it being $200?
Lol. Yeet 16:29
